Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 8 – Sunday

Sunday did its best to provide incident and excitement, although it was always going to be difficult to follow on from yesterday’s spoils. An unexpected Manolo Gabbiadini brace stole the show, while assists for budget midfielders provided the rest of the Fantasy fare, as defences buckled in both matches.

Gross the provider once again

Brighton has now scored six goals this season, with Pascal Gross involved in five of them.

The German claimed his third assist of the season with his interception that lead to Anthony Knockaert‘s sweetly struck opener.

Gross took an ownership 14.1% into Gameweek 8, having been signed by over 109,000 new managers, although another 68,000 saw fit to move him out. They may be regretting that decision this evening after another steady six-point return from the budget midfielder.

It was Knockaert who went into the campaign considered our most likely attacking option in the Seagulls ranks. But the Frenchman has been on the periphery until today. He fired a first goal of the season on his recall to Chris Hughton’s starting XI following his benching at Arsenal.

Both midfielders can build on Sunday’s points over a continued run of favourable fixtures over the next four Gameweeks. Hughton’s men face visits to West Ham and Swansea, while Southampton and Stoke are the next visitors to the Amex Stadium.

However, that run is more likely to promote interest in the Brighton defence and, intriguingly, we may have a new budget option available to us.

Shane Duffy was forced off with what looked like a thigh problem to be replaced by Uwe Huenemeier, who, at 3.9, may now be called into action. The German is already owned by 6.2% of managers as a bench warming budget option but could now enter more squads should Duffy face a spell on the sidelines.

Gabbiadini delivers as Forster falters

Manolo Gabbiadini scored his first goals since Gameweek 2 with a brace against Newcastle United to provide a rare double-digit return.

The Italian first pegged back the visitors with a fine solo effort before converting a spot-kick after Shane Long was felled.

Dusan Tadic was on the pitch at the time of the award, indicating that Gabbiadini has now assumed penalty duties. Tadic had previously taken and scored a spot-kick ahead of the striker against West Ham in Gameweek 2.

Gabbiadini was recalled to the Saints starting line-up today having been reduced to cameo roles since his last start in Gameweek 4. He had suffered a loss of 190,000 owners over that spell and went into today’s game as part of just 95,000 squads.

The 12-points appear unlikely to spark a renaissance, although Gabbiadini’s confidence levels will be boosted ahead of West Brom’s visit in Gameweek 9. Another return against the Baggies could see some begin to reconsider the striker, although his previous inconsistency, coupled with the availability of Swansea City’s Tammy Abraham, will likely temper interest.

Fraser Forster‘s uncertain display helped ensure that Southampton had to settle for a point.

The keeper was slow to react to Isaac Hayden’s first-half strike, while he also lets Ayoze Perez’s shot rebound back to the striker for the eventual winner.

Forster is part of 9.0% of squads and went into Gameweek 8 having produced nine points via a penalty save at Stoke City last time out. That haul had earned him 56,000 new owners before Saturday’s deadline, second only to Newcastle’s Rob Elliot who picked up 70,000 managers. Both keepers produced just a single point to reward their recent investors.

Elsewhere for Newcastle, Christian Atsu recovered from the knock that kept him from international duty and duly delivered an assist for his 4.2% ownership. The Ghanian’s initial drive was blocked before rebounding to Hayden to convert the Magpies’ opener.

Like Atsu, Matt Ritchie also figured having recovered from the injury that kept him out of Scotland’s squad over the break. However, his role on set-pieces remains reduced by Jonjo Shelvey’s presence. Ritchie took 13 of 15 corners with Shelvey out of favour but shared them four apiece today.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I captained Kane 4 times and he blanked all of them. There might be better options than him this season like...Wouldn't you rather have Morata+Richarlison, than Kane+Chalobah? Something to think about...

    Asking again (soz!) Current team:

    Foster / Elliot
    Alonso / Davies / Mee / Wimmer / Mbemba
    Eriksen / Salah / Sterling / Gross / Carroll
    Kane / Lukaku / Abraham

Thinking about a cheeky WC to:

    DDG / Elliot
    Alonso / (Davies/Otamendi) / Daniels / Ward / Fernandez
    Eriksen / Salah / Sterling / Richarlison* / RLC
    Aguero / Morata / Abraham

    Worth it or nah..?

Palace all of a sudden look more likely to score than sotton really, but with the home advantage I would probably stick. Rest of the team looks very good. What's your thoughts on Alli? Think I'll probably get sterling for him myself.

Best midfield options at 4.6 or under guys? (That isn't Carroll) Looking at Surman, Cork, Stephens as potentials. Who do we reckon? I know none of them are consistent scorers but transitioning to 4-3-3 so need another one in alongside Carroll

I think a castle defender should work, showing a bit of faith in Benitez here, he traditionally sets his teams up to be strong defensively & good chance of an immediate clean sheet.

Cheers that’s what I was thinking. Any insight into who is more nailed out of Yedlin and Manquillo ?

I think both are nailed atm, Yedlin missed out at the start of the season due to a hamstring injury. Manquillo has played quite a few games, my worry with manquillo would be whether he will play or not when Dummett, who started the season, returns

Of the two of them I'd think Yedlin was more nailed

I have Wimmer, Stoke have some great fixtures coming up. However, not sure how loudly I can bang on the Stoke drum considering they just got hammered by 7 goals =S

I had wimmer before swapping to Ogbonna when he got injured. Stoke rotate well with Burnley but not sure if wimmer is nailed he got hooked at half time against city

As long as he is feeding Vardy with assists to earn those points I’m happy to go with it

I would have said twist re Mahrez but you have 3 City already so no obvious replacement

just seemed like an intersting difefrential. And there isnt much in that price bracket to choose from. He has looked pretty good in some of the games I have seen recently and if Vardy was more clincial he would have had 3 or 4 more assists by now

Wait and see if Kun plays midweek. Kane out is ballsy but could be the right move short term

If I think Kun starts against Burnley, then Kane > Kun is a no-brainer, for me. Don't like getting in Otamendi--wouldn't you rather have an extra City middie?

Can Jesus be considered a long term pick?

I think he can be prepared for early wins and maybe the odd benching but should still be good value long term in that team

I own, but not sure he's ideal. Assuming Kun is fully fit for next weekend, then Kun, Sterling, Sane/Silva is looking like the optimal combination. All the more reason to hold off on transfers until after midweek cup games, to see if injuries simplify the choices.

why is everyone so sure Kun is going to be starting this weekend. He had broken ribs? Yes he might have been on the bench but why would they rush his return whne they have Jesus and plenty of other formations and players to utilise? Bringing in Kun assuming he features next weekend is mad

I am not making that assumption. But it seems pretty clear that he did _not_ have broken ribs. The Roma fixture may make things clearer.

maybe he is still injured and they just put him on the bench to make it appear that he is available but he actually isnt

Bertrand also a concern for me, but next three fixtures are decent, so not likely to burn a transfer there soon.

I'm keen on going with three City attackers, already have Sterling and Silva, who to go with for the third?
    a. Aguero (with Kane and Vardy)
    b. Jesus (with Kane and Morata)
    c. KDB (with Kane, Morata and Abraham up front)
    d. Sane (with Kane, Morata and Abraham up front + 1.6 to upgrade defence)
