The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 9

Just for a moment there, we thought we had Pep worked out.

After meticulously studying his selections, we were beginning to gain confidence that his days of meddling with our Gameweek tallies were over. We were almost complacent.

The tide of goals and points produced by his Manchester City side were more than a little seductive. But they were a siren song, tempting us to sail towards the rocky outlines of Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus, only to be shipwrecked by Guardiola’s teamsheet.

We always knew that Sergio Aguero was pivotal to his selection today. Many expected the start for the Argentine, but the smart money was on both Sterling and, to a lesser extent, Jesus be alongside him.

Between them, that pair had picked up 673,000 new owners who, this evening, have just a single point to show for their investment.

More significantly, some 586,000 or 11.3%, had the armband with Jesus. That included 36 of the top 100 managers heading into Gameweek 9 – the top choice among that leading pack.

Meanwhile, others had him as their vice-captain with Sterling – who was a total no-show – as their primary skipper. A double-blow.

It appears that Guardiola was biding his time, welcoming us in and reassuring us, before hitting us with a sucker punch.

So now we have to regroup, assess the damage and attempt to decode this latest situation with new data.

There were perhaps two factors at play.

For one, City faced their toughest test so far in the Champions League against Napoli in midweek.

Secondly, maybe there was a desire to give Aguero the opportunity of a start at the Etihad with the club scoring record in his sights.

In the end, he scored the goal to equal Eric Brook’s record and, interestingly, Guardiola again acknowledged post-match the importance of achieving this milestone quickly.

“Sergio has not played for three weeks and it takes time to get that little bit of rhythm back. He needs to play minutes, he did it today and maybe on Tuesday again. It was important for him to equal the record as soon as possible. When he breaks it, it will be something special.”

That would hint that Aguero will get another run-out on home turf against Wolves in the EFL Cup – the chance to break the record in front of his own supporters, rather than at The Hawthorns in Gameweek 10. Perhaps.

We can only really speculate. But what is of more concern is that, with a second tie with Napoli to arrive after the West Brom clash, we have to presume that Guardiola will have this in mind.

City sit clear on top of their group; they can afford to drop points but, after 11 successive victories in all competitions, Guardiola will not want to scupper the current momentum.

With Aguero, Jesus and Sterling – along with Bernando Silva and Leroy Sane – once described as his “five strikers”, just how will Pep now approach matters?

Previously convinced that his “central strikers” – Aguero and Jesus – would be paired together, are we now to accept that Guardiola has broken from this pattern? And if so, can we really ride with that?

Tonight Aguero is already the most bought player ahead of Gameweek 10. Meanwhile, Jesus ranks second for sales.

However, there is every chance that Aguero will be saved for Napoli while Jesus starts against the Baggies in Gameweek 10.

While we can study his selection patterns further and make assumptions, we seem unlikely to crack Guardiola’s code.

If we are to invest in City’s attack, we have to accept the anxiety and disappointment witnessed today, else perhaps settle for David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne who, to this point, seem immune to the tinkerings.

It’s becoming a fascinating sub-plot to a season that continues to test and tease.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

And Sturridge has started the plum fixtures so far. CRY (H), BUR (H), NEW (A). When Sturridge starts, Firmino's either on the wing, or benched. Essentially, good fixtures are useless for him.

People are being silly. Firmino has shown no form in the PL and may have lost pens to Salah. People's expectations are too high of Lukaku, they expect him to score in every game and if he doesn't they look to get rid. Rediculous really, he has scored 7 in 9, at this rate he'll be on 28 goals with 2 games to go, and I'm sure most would not be surprised if he hit 30. He has lacked explosiveness this season tbf, but we all know he has it in its locker and along with Kane, the only guaranteed starter in the premium striker bracket. (I think Morata's place is at risk now)

I don't think fixture really matter with Brady, Richarlison will even outscore him if Brady had the 3 easiest fixtures and Richarlison the 3 hardest

Agreed on Sterling but was really impressed by DIlva, also more assured for starts

If Jones is fit, I'm def keeping him indeed, but assuming he's out until the next IB, Yoshida seems a good placeholder

I thought Huddersfield played very well, but we have more power. We were the best team and only one team played to win in the second half. We were completely in control and then something happened to open the game. Then we had the best period in the game. We could have scored lots of goals but I don’t want to analyse the performance too much and prefer to focus on the referees, whom I cannot speak too much about.

Just woke up to the results... this season is going to be defined as the season I couldn't pick a captain to save my life.

I've become used to getting the Kane 2 points but this week is really pushing it.

    Sterling (C) Jesus (VC)

It's annoying but don't let it bother you at all, you can't predict when Pep will randomly rotate a player it looked would play due to reduced CL mins. Plus there's every chance he could have done well if he played and he should get you points moving forward.

Lukaku's performance today has made me doubt kicking him out. He was the only United player who tried to get the team back into the game. He really took it by the scruff of the neck. The driving run and cross for Rashford was class and if it weren't for Herrera, he may even have had a goal. Misfiring supporting cast is the worry, but I've a feeling we will see a response v Spurs at home.

But United will play the same game as they played against Liverpool where they made little effort to play attacking football. Same with Chelsea the following week. Mourinho isn't gonna change just because he's getting stick about being defensive

Disagree. Mourinho knows that at Old Trafford he can't get away with that shite.

Don’t fully agree. United scored vs all other top 6 teams at home last season. So there’s a difference between Jose at home and away.

But no point keeping for the next two as other strikers have better fixtures.

It sounds like you are keeping Lukaku for 1 more gw as you have other issues elsewhere?

Ha nice educated guess. I would like Richarlison but can't afford him. Otherwise my team is ok. My concern is that Kun might not start. Burnt by Sterling omission today.

Don’t kid yourself mate. Sell for Kun/Morata and buy back before Newcastle.

Probably one of the few Clark owners around here.

Has he been dropped for the foreseeable future?

Mmm, got him on WC to pair him and Elliot to rotate with Ward and Pope. Would have worked nicely this week had he played

Didn't you say he was sure to start a page or two back?

      Fake news!

Anyway that move is fine. Lukaku v a tight Spurs defence or Agüero for ten minutes against Albion is no contest.

Can limp through next gw with Davies Jones & Ward if Jones isn't actually badly injured, Clark can go next gw for Daniels, saves me the hit.

Sane seems to be getting the most points from the Man City midfield but is being overlooked in favour of Silva and Sterling. Why?

No need to lose Silva and Jones for hits, the latter only if injured and you don't have another viable option available. Just do the Lukaku to Aguero transfer imo

Never understand that fan thing on this site,i just enjoy good football.
I used to enjoy Deportivo La Coruna when all friends were for Barsa/Real.M.
It was like watching Brazil national team same style(Donato,Silva,Emerson,Fran,Rivaldo,Makaay,Djalminha etc)

I hate Pep but i enjoy City style, pure domination, control and fun to watch.
Pool are good too but defense is terrible,Spurs are good but too predictable going trough middle they need some wing attack to open more space in middle for Kane.

Nothing against Berbinho i like his posts just my view on fans.

    Jones > Ward
    Jesus > Kun

    Foster, Elliot
    Ward, Bavies, Otamendi, Lowe, Mbemba
