The Pre-Match Preamble – Gameweek 10

For a minute, we were in danger of becoming complacent. With the outside chance of Pep Guardiola picking a predictable XI at West Brom, and with Sergio Aguero surely unlikely to wrap himself around another lamppost, we needed Harry Kane’s injury to keep us on our toes. It served as another reminder that this season is likely to be anything but settled and straightforward.

Mauricio Pochettinho’s optimistic updates earlier in the week had ensured that Friday’s Kane revelation came as a shock. A throwaway comment post-match on Wednesday put us on alert but, in truth, few were prepared to go without their star striker for Gameweek 10.

I’d already committed my transfers and spent my points, reassured by his manager’s words and the theory that, even if fatigued, Kane would surely turn up at Old Trafford.

I’m fortunate on two counts. If we were selecting a fixture for Kane to miss this season, perhaps Manchester United away would be it. While I was confident he’d produce some points – he was even my captain earlier in the week – I was still torn between backing Kane and playing Phil Jones in my back four.

With Jones to come into my XI now, I had a replacement at hand – and even one that even benefits from Kane’s absence – to soften the blow.

That was enough to steer my thoughts away from exploring the Free Hit option, although I have been entertaining the idea.

We are guinea pigs for this new chip – the first generation to explore it and devise the “optimum strategy” involved.

Kane’s absence, coupled with a plum fixture for Arsenal and in particular Alexis Sanchez, appears to present some key ingredients that lend themselves to activating the new chip. Clearly, some have also arrived at this conclusion. Already, 105,000 have put it in play, more than any other Gameweek so far this season – although not significantly more: some 101,000 played it in Gameweek 7.

For me, the effectiveness of the Free Hit mirrors the Wildcard. Our squads need to warrant such an emergency measure. It’s not so much the overall score achieved by the Free Hit line-up that’s important, it’s the difference between that line-up and the one that’s scrapped.

I looked at my XI following the Kane fall-out and struggled to see enough smouldering fires to warrant the applying the hose of the one-week overhaul.

Sanchez as captain and Alexandre Lacazette in for Kane are enticing options that could pay handsomely, but equally, Mohamed Salah could deliver with my armband. Meanwhile my defence – built with the weekend fixtures in mind – may also help compensate.

The popular thinking is that we’ll need to turn to the chip for Gameweek 31, when the FA Cup Quarter Finals ravage the fixture list. That may never transpire, or the impact of those ties could be minimal.

But a reduced set of fixtures is a scenario that makes committing to the chip far more straightforward. Even if faced with an array of unfashionable teams from which to source talent, when cursed with 5-6 absentees, it’s pretty obvious that the chip can temporarily strengthen our hand.

Crucially, having the Free Hit to repair the problem will mean that our transfer and second Wildcard plans can be divorced from the task of building with Gameweek 31 in mind. That could prove a big advantage.

This is all speculative. We don’t know the scale of that problem as yet and, as mentioned, it may never get near last season’s four-match Gameweek 28 dilemma. But, together with my adequate XI, it was enough to calm any trigger-happy tendencies and leave my Free Hit in reserve.

Those who have committed, who are now turning to Sanchez and Lacazette to represent them, are in many ways pioneers. They bravely go forward to test the effectiveness of the new chip, putting it to use to solve a problem previously reserved for points hits. It will be fascinating to assess the outcome and perhaps learn from it.

While Gameweek 31 looms, I’ve no doubt that we will see further opportunites to consider the chip. One look at the Christmas schedule suggests that we are all destined to suffer injuries, suspensions and rested players at that time. And if Sanchez and company provide profit for the Free Hit pioneers, we may all follow their lead come December.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm going with Salah (c) - but one thing I hadn't previously considered is the fact that Klopp and Wagner know each other so well.

May not be a factor worth considering, but does the fact that they probably know each other's styles, tactics and strategies inside-out have any implications for the match at all?

Most players who visit this site know the advantages that can be gained in double/blank game weeks by using the chips. I'm honestly amazed at how many free hit chips are being played this week. The free hit chip is stronger than triple captain. Some would argue it's even stronger than bench boost (for a DGW) as you don't need to attach a wildcard to it and can select your players that very week. Also it allows for a punt or two as you only own those players for one week.

I'm so happy to see so many Free Hits being used. I think because people are so desperate to get rid of their WildCard the Free Hit is now burning a hole in their pocket. It's great. Still 20+ game weeks to go.

Cheers you two. I've commented a few times about free hit this season and feel so alone when suggesting how strong it can be later on in the season. Most people still seem to think bench boost and triple capt are the two strongest chips - I'm not so sure.

You can't bench boost and free hit in the same week so its not stronger than bench boost for double gw. It works differently for different people. If it gets you 30+ points then it's worth it.

I would argue it is slightly better because:

        1) You don't need to play the wildcard the week before.
        2) You can select the players on the actual game week, not the week before (as above).
        3) You can take a punt or two because they are only for one week.

But you can't play bench boost. I will be just doing forward planning like last year and having 15 double gameweek players and then bench boosting to get them all playing.

If you don't like mights and maybes are you potentially playing your triple captain and bench boost outside of a DGW? Surely that's the same principle.

In recent years not many people have actually ended up with 15 DGW players. Budget constraints made that near impossible last season. Also it's the forward planning/wildcard that I see as the negative. It's close - I think Wildcard/Bench Boost combo and Free Hit are about equal.

Ive kept mine but i disagree about this to a degree - blank weeks are not high scoring, with most of the big options invariably missing out. I think, for a persom with kane, lots of Spurs and United, coutinho and city doubts..they could easily hit 30 even 40 more points with a free hit this week and take advantage of a sanchez captain. 30-40 more points will be hard to come by in the blank

We don't know. As the preamble states. One thing which stands out to me is a free hit team now will be MUCH better than a free hit used on 8 average teams a la last season. You can load it with genuine heavy hitters.

But like Mark said, the key is difference between the two teams.

I agree that playing free hit in any standard week will likely gain you more points than your usual team. What i'm thinking about is It's strength in a DGW - the ability to pick any 11 DGW players (with subs) for that one week.

I don't think anyone is saying now is the BEST time to use it. But if, like me, you already got two players in for a minus 4 who now won't play and have an injured bench then it's an option of a minus 12 or free hit and a chance to make up ground.

We'll see how it goes, but if it scores even just 20 points more than my current team it will be a huge success.

Bingo! You've suggested exactly what I think it is... There are lots of players who have made early transfers this week that they are now regretting. The free hit is an escape from that.

Has there been any update on coutinho since klopp press conference?

He said he would see how training went, have there been any training photos from Friday?

What on earth to do here? Starred players at risk of missing out completely:

    Pope (Elliott)
    Bavies* Stones Tarkowski (Clark* Mbemba*)
    Coutinho* Sterling Richarlison Gross RLC
    Kun Morata (c) (Kane*)
    0FT 0.0itb

Can't use Free Hit as I brought in Morata and Kun with 2FTs and will not be able to afford them again.

How about Bavies > Jones and Coutinho > Salah (c) for -8?

I’ve started Jones as I think Mourinho will play all defensive as he had done against Liverpool.

Am I crazy in thinking that Hazard slipped under the radar as a captaincy option? He's scored braces both for Belgium and in the Champions League (in a game where Morata didn't score), he has a great record against Bournemouth and has even said he loves playing against them (and he is a confidence player) and of course he's on penalties).

Bought Lewis Cook 2 weeks ago and sold last week. 3 games he's played and Bournemouth only 2 conceded in last 3

He won’t play at all or start no risk of a cameo so start if you like but highly doubt he will play
