Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Sterling Strikes In Sane’s Absence

Manchester City leave it oh so late to skewer the Saints, with one midfielder replacing another as the rising star in their ranks.

A month is a long time in Fantasy Premier League.

Leroy Sane came into Gameweek 11 at the start of November on the back of three straight double-digit hauls (and four from five).

He was the new Fantasy prince, his ownership trebling to more than one and a half million between Gameweeks 9 and 13 on the back of eight straight starts handed out by a manager notorious for shuffling his pack.

Team-mate Raheem Sterling, meanwhile, was getting by with dropping ownership and no guarantee of starts.

But over this month’s four Gameweeks, Sterling has scored 30 points to Sane’s 10.

The tide has turned quite markedly, with the virus that kept the German out of the last-gasp win over Southampton restricting his November output to a solitary assist, whereas Sterling has managed two of those and a pair of goals as well.

The England midfielder’s dramatic winner last night was a big blow for those who’d ditched him from Gameweek 10 onwards, although close to 140,000 had seen the light and brought him in ahead of yesterday’s match.

And while Pep Guardiola will no doubt be resting Sterling sooner or later – he’s started the last six matches in all competitions but is yet to manage five in a row in the league this season – the case for Sane is further weakened by disciplinary issues.

Should he recover in time to be available for Sunday’s visit from West Ham, the German remains one booking away from a ban that would keep him out of Gameweek 16’s Manchester derby.

For now, the momentum is most definitely with Sterling – more than 111,000 have made him Gameweek 15’s most popular pick, while Sane is currently the most sold player, with 107,000+ getting rid.

Playing the Guardiola guessing game

Sandwiched between City’s next two league matches is the long trip to Ukraine to play Shakhtar Donetsk in a Champions League dead rubber on Wednesday.

That will surely prompt Pep to sideline key personnel, with the indefatigable Kevin De Bruyne top of that particular list.

The Belgian, now tied with Sterling on 87 points for the season, has started every single league match to date.

He’s currently in fine form and the goal he was somewhat controversially awarded last night – his “on target” cross deflecting off Virgil Van Dijk – was his third in the last four Gameweeks. The midfielder also created nine chances against the Saints, which was a Gameweek high.

Sane’s yellow card conundrum might persuade Guardiola to save him for midweek, leaving Sterling to play on Sunday and then have the night off in Ukraine. Or, of course, it could be the other way round – second-guessing the City coach is a fool’s errand, after all.

David Silva was another to be rested last night, his 18.1% ownership having to make do with a 16-minute cameo, so the Spaniard should feature against the Hammers, while his namesake Bernardo could be in line for hs first start since Gameweek 10 if Guardiola rests one, or maybe even both, of Sane and Sterling.

Then there’s the issue of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus.

The strikers started in tandem for the first time since Gameweek 5 last night but failed to spark, with the Brazilian fortunate to come away with an assist when he was fouled for De Bruyne’s shot/cross scoring free-kick.

The team as a whole seemed to miss the driving runs of Sane – they created 26 opportunities, but only two were deemed big chances – and the forward partnership suffered as a result, with Aguero failing to score for the first time in six league starts.

Guardiola might field the pair again on Sunday, but that Champions League tie makes it unlikely, although the coach has plenty of previous for starting with no recognised striker at all, so everything is up for grabs over the next week.

As ever this season, managers with City assets in their squads will have to suck it and see.

Cracks at the back for City

Gone are the days when Vincent Kompany needed to be in attendance for City to keep a clean sheet.

If anyone is missed at the back for Guardiola’s men, it is John Stones, who limped off with a hamstring injury 30 minutes into the team’s last shut-out in Gameweek 12.

City have now kept just two clean sheets in the last seven matches, with the Kompany/Nicolas Otamendi pairing hardly exuding confidence and the Belgian now one caution away from suspension – as is midfielder Fernandinho – following a yellow card last night.

Although Southampton were restricted to just six chances – only Chelsea allowed fewer in Gameweek 14 – the visitors threatened throughout.

Even before Oriol Romeu’s goal from a Sofiane Boufal assist, they missed two big chances from corners, including a Wesley Hoedt effort that struck the bar.

Aside from Chelsea and Arsenal, premium defences are struggling at present and City’s rearguard, much like rivals United and Spurs, are beginning to show weakness.

As for the Saints’ backline, they’ve managed just one clean sheet in nine matches, and a late knock for Cedric Soares (6.8%) was a further blow heading into Sunday’s trip to Bournemouth.

What to do with this lot guys?

    Forster (Elliot)
Kolasinac - Otamendi - Daniels - Azpi (Ward)
Richarlison - Salah (VC) - D. Silva (RLC, Atsu)
    Kane (C) - Morata - Murray

Really don't know what to do except if I take a hit. G2G or take a -4 somewhere?

How nailed on do we think Hennesey is? One mistake away from being dropped or is he safe for now? Don't know if I want to take a hit for a GK, could swap Elliot for him for free with their fixtures.

    Do it?

Cheers mate. Probably worth a risk at the moment though.

Same thing as getting Pope then, with Heaton back in a month or two he's also a transfer waiting to happen.

Yeah, you're not wrong with Pope.

Maybe consider Gomes as a differential - fixs improve soon. Always got a penalty save in him too!

Thanks mate, my problem is I'd like to have a playing GK for this GW and wouldn't like to take a hit. 🙂 So 4.3M is all I can afford. Will try my luck with Hennesey and see how that pans out. Cheers.

Agree. The sooner he returns to Portugal the better. The problem is that Bayern must want to recover some of the money invested, and the max money a portuguese club can pay is no more than 18, 20 M€, roughly half of the amount invested by Bayern.

Even a loan to Portugal would work I think, hopefully he could rediscover his mojo, and suitors would come. No one in their right mind would pay 20m€ atm I don't think

Not really an issue they are what they are. One person scored 22, the other 62 without making any changes and with a touch of luck on the captaincy was the point.

Is it worth burning 4 points to get Salah in?

Something like: Zaha and Kane for Salah and Jesus?

...or is that asking for trouble (Kane is scoring goals and loves an away day + the likelihood of Jesus being dropped).

    Rest of my team:

    Elliot // (Krul)

    Monreal // Mee // Otamendi // (Mariappa) // (Mbemba)

    Zaha // Hazard // Sterling // Gros // (Carroll)

    Vardy // Kane // Morata

How long do you reckon Moyes will last?

    Until Xmas?

Moyes is not at fault. Yet. The Board are, for buying Hart, and also Arnautovic.

But Moyes will have to face down the bully boys amongst our fans, and play Noble and Ayew, week in, week out.

Bilic had NOTHING to do with Hart, and little with Arnautovic. But he was at fault, for not standing up for Feghouli, and letting him go.

Your squad isn't THAT bad. Surely Bilic deserves some censure for being unable to motivate? Arnautovic has looked better recently.

Our squad is awful, and has structural weaknesses that the summer signings have done nothing to improve. As, I pointed out, at the time.

Would get rid of Jones for a couple weeks regardless of who you choose to replace him with. Mustafi, Daniels, Mee? Mee has two good home fixtures after Leicester away this week

    Confused guy here

    Sane dropping in price??what?
Everyone want to sell Elliot now?? i guess u din´t get him because id cs potential
Alot of people doubling up on liverpool mid with Sane yet nobody is mention Ozil
By now people should now Pep better...sane rested yesterday and sterling played once again so it´s obvious that sterling will rest within the next 2 games and sane will play yet people selling sane to get sterling!! lol

Sane on 4 yellows so Pep might bench him v WHM, play him midweek and in the derby v United

Elliot appears to be dropped and some are left without any keepers so sales hardly a surprise.

Not bothered about Sane sales personally, but 1 game where you didn't play and don't be surprised by a drop. I'm keeping regardless.

Ozil, I think has a lot to prove more than just Hudd at home, but go for it. Fortune favours the brave, not the worst move.

Sane sounded injured rather than rested. People chase points that will always happen. No doubt Sterling will be rested, but I think Pep has proved, it's almost impossible to guess who will be rested when with any amount of certainty.

      1. Shaw must go on

sane didn´t play coz a virus therefore he rested physically...not planning to get ozil for now but he´s a better choice than mane atm...and if u say ozil still has to prove himself we much have been analysing totally different stats!!
what make u say Elliot has been dropped?? the fact he rested one game??

        1. Shaw must go on

Plus it´s quite obvious that Pep rates Sane more than Sterling....

    How does this look (-4)?

    Vardy -> Niasse
    Coutinho -> Hazard
    Wimmer -> Christensen

After sticking with Vardy through his dry spell, it seems a shame to get rid of him when he looks to be coming into a patch of form. Coutinho is guaranteed to start this weekend you'd think, though Hazard's ownership is on the rise and it's at the stage where any returns will affect my GW rank.
