Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Austin Keeps Cherries in Check

Charlie Austin delivers for Southampton once again, ensuring a hard-fought draw on the south coast as Fantasy managers prepare to abandon their short-term investment in Bournemouth.

The Saints striker returned to the starting XI today after being omitted for the midweek run-around at Manchester City.

Austin responded by scoring another vital goal, the equaliser from a Nathan Redmond assist, to make it three from his last two starts.

Based on data from the last three Gameweeks, only Alvaro Morata and Alexandre Lacazette can better Austin’s eight shots in the box – and that despite being limited to a brief cameo in midweek.

That statistic, along with his three goals, highlights his potential as a budget option available for just 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League.

He will take his opportunities when given pitch-time, but a lack of mobility has previously held the striker back, with manager Mauricio Pellegrino largely turning to Manolo Gabbiadini and Shane Long to lead his attack.

Pellegrino may now find it difficult to overlook Austin, although a congested festive schedule, coupled with the 28-year-old’s propensity to pick up injuries, will ensure that his minutes and starts are managed further.

Southampton’s fixtures also stacks the odds against him as a Fantasy asset.

He’ll face Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs and Manchester United over the next six Gameweeks; hardly match-ups that encourage renewed interest in the Saints after we were burned by Pellegrino’s side over their incredibly favourable opening to the campaign.

The defence remains the popular area of the squad, with Ryan Bertrand (8.4%) and Fraser Forster (8%) the most owned players.

However, the backline have now have kept just one clean sheet in the last ten Gameweeks and there’s little to suggest that they can improve on that over a punishing run of opponents.

Cherries reach their sell-by date

Ryan Fraser scored in his first start since Gameweek 5, but itโ€™s his fellow midfielder Andrew Surman who continues to offer solid value.

Surman’s assist today took him to three for the season, all of which have arrived in the last six Gameweeks.

He’s also scored twice and his seven-point showing against the Saints, which included two bonus, took him to a club-leading 57 points for the season โ€“ and all for just 4.8.

Things were rather less rosy for the 5.4% of managers with Callum Wilson (6.1) as their third striker, however.

Having boosted his ownership by 342,000+ since a Gameweek 12 hat-trick against Huddersfield, Wilson was denied a fifth successive start today and failed to produce from a 21-minute appearance from the bench.

He lost over 6,000 owners heading into Gameweek 15 and has already shed another 10,000 coming out of it. That will surely only increase ahead of next weekend’s deadline.

Elsewhere, the Cherries’ most popular FPL asset, Charlie Daniels (13.3%), also delivered little as Eddie Howe’s men were denied a clean sheet for the second successive home match, having secured three straight shut-outs in the three previous fixtures.

Next Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace marks the end of a strong run of fixtures since Gameweek 11.

Adam Smith – recalled for Steve Cook on Sunday – will miss that Eagles clash having picked up his fifth booking today – he was controversially booked for simulation in the penalty area by referee Jonathan Moss, who reportedly later admitted the error.

Following the Selhurst Park encounter, Howe’s men will face a visit from Liverpool sandwiched between trips to both Manchester clubs.

The fixtures do soften considerably from Gameweek 20, and that might just be enough to offer Daniels, if not Wilson, a stay of execution.

Tough, I would probably try get Ramsey in for Brady but that might make other areas weaker. I'd say downgrade Lukaku but I wouldn't know who for. Otherwise maybe Brady to RLC and Niasse to Calvert Lewin and play 3-5-2 for next couple of weeks. I'd also downgrade Foster at some stage too

Yeah for sure. But I'm not 100% convinced he'll be nailed long term. Big Sam played the same that won the week before but he may ease him onto the subs bench. At the moment Joselu sits on the bench in a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-2.

I've been asking about selling Sane in order to bring in Hazard. Most have told me to hold on to Sane. That begs the question (for me, at least): Is there a breaking point with Sane (besides injury)?

Four starts in five, one assist during that stretch, YC suspension looming, face United and Spurs for two of their next three. Seems like this is as a good time to sell as any... right? Am I thinking about this illogically?

You're not wrong, I guess. I'm just trying to figure out why so many have told me Sane over Hazard. Or maybe it's more about saving the FT?

I'm in the same boat and I'll be doing it for no hit.
Hazard on fire with great fixtures.
Haz will pick up more gametime than Sane with the heavy schedule coming up.
Partly the reason I'm sticking with Kane is I want my top players to be playing over this coming month and that puts the Citeh guys below the likes of Hazard and Kane.
It's risky but hayho, got to follow you gut feeling when it comes to deciding between hard choices.

    A) Daniels (cry)
    B) Mee (WAT)
    C) Moreno (EVE)
    D) Naughton (WBA)

Not A, Bournemouth looked shaky today. For me it would be Naughton for sure and then flip a coin between Mee and Moreno

Triple Burnley defence, Mane possible rotation per game, Diouf and Niasse. That sounds like some inevitable sorting out in the near future to me. I’d downdrade Mane and spread the funds elsewhere.

the next wc is just a month away.

i dnt knw abt downgrading mane. he will be played. managing his mins because his just got back from a recurring hammy injury. he will be played regularly for sure.

trip burn but not playing them together. i got them sometime ago so not keen to let them go.
i think i will shift duffy to kiko.

weekly with this squad its gonna be

        pope
        ward/apzi/monreal/kiko
        hazard/salah/mane/sterling/richarlison
        morata

        subs: joel, mee, diouf, niasse

mee is consistent starter and good chance of a clean sheet points.
        diouf plays every match.
niasse granted is still unclear but he is good when he starts.

is there anything im missing? premium fwd? nah non of them worth the money. mayb morata or jesus. but jesus mins is so managed.

cout is good no doubt. but for me mane is a longer term, when klopp plays his full strength, cout will be pulling the strings from the back and limited to be so up front like the last match.

klopp is learning his mistake from last season, when his troops, went on a winless run right after the DEC fixtures lost 3 draw 4 matches starting of Jan till end of Feb winning only once. mane was out with an injury and the squad got overwork with this style of gen-gen press and christmas fixtures.

so he will rest random people. and salah tops the list. he looks tired. plus when epl is approaching that last quarter of the season. he will likely not push himself that hard, and mane to play a bigger part.....as long he doesnt get that hammy over worked.

    1 FT

    Fabianski Elliot
    Walker Alonso Mee Naughton Mbemba
    Grab Hazard Mahez Salah Carroll
    Jesus Lukaku Niasse

    Many areas fix ...thinking of
Lukaku to Kane and Alonso to Christensen for -4

    Any suggestion please?

    One more:

    A)Should I consider maybe Azpi-->Christensen and Groß-->Ramsey?

B)How 'bout Groß-->Richarlison? Watford has some really nice fixtures ahead.

    Azpi,Otamendi,Monreal,Mee,Rangel
    Coutinho,Salah,Sterling,Groß,RLC

Hiya lads, how’s she looking for next gameweek please?

    Elliot
    Christensen - Otamendi - Mustafi
    Richarlison - Salah - Hazard - Sterling
    Wilson - Kane - Morata
    —————————————————-
    Krul: Ward, Moreno, RLC

    1FT, 0 ITB

Realise Elliot needs to be sorted but will be sorted after next gameweek as i’m looking to do the following for a possible -4:

    Elliot > DDG
Mustafi > Zeegelaar (awaiting update on Mustafi first)
    Wilson > DCL

Any comments would be much appreciated ๐Ÿ™‚
