Scout Notes – Key Duo Get Unwanted Minutes

West Ham and Leicester City do just enough to see off their League One foes as key midfielders have to put in bigger FA Cup shifts than their Fantasy ownership would have liked.

VAR grabbed the headlines, Kelechi Iheanacho the goals and Riyad Mahrez most of our attention as Leicester beat Fleetwood Town 2-0 in their FA Cup third round replay.

The Nigerian striker scored in each half, with assists from Islam Slimani and Mahrez, to set up a tie at Peterborough United.

The match took a long time to warm up, but finally delivered its moment in the sun when Iheanacho became the first player to score a goal awarded by a video assistant referee, who overturned the initial on-field ruling of offside.

Foxes boss Claude Puel had made eight changes from the side that drew with Chelsea at the weekend.

But Mahrez, owned by 12.1% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, was one of the three to survive the cull, setting up an anxious evening for his backers.

The Algerian’s fine form – he’s scored five goals and produced four assists across the last ten Gameweeks – and Leicester’s fixtures (WAT eve SWA mci STK BOU wba) have helped his ownership triple over that period.

The fact that his assist kept his run of form going and he left the pitch unscathed after 81 minutes kept everyone happy enough.

The team’s two other popular players, Harry Maguire (11.5%) and Jamie Vardy (15.2%), were given the night off and a nine-minute appearance from the bench respectively.

Should Leicester progress against Peterborough at the end of the month, they’ll have a fifth round tie on the weekend of February 17, sandwiched between a trip to Man City and a visit from Stoke City.

Although Puel’s selections are yet to reflect it, the FA Cup represents mid-table Leicester with their one chance of silverware this season, so rotation might well become an issue should they go further in the competition.

Sub role for Arnautovic

While Mahrez has added a relatively modest 46,000+ to his ownership base ahead of Gameweek 24, West Ham midfielder Marko Arnautovic’s popularity has increased prodigiously.

His 16-point haul in the 4-1 win at Huddersfield – part of an eight-match run in which he’s scored six and set up a further three goals – has prompted more than 160,000 managers to make him FPL’s most purchased player this week.

Eight Gameweeks ago, he was in fewer than 30,000 teams. He now sits in 10.6% of squads and those managers would have been hoping that their man might enjoy a night off as West Ham sought to see off Shrewsbury Town at the second time of asking.

Those hopes were dashed when Arnautovic was brought on after 69 minutes as the Shrews refused to be tamed at the London Stadium.

It took an extra time goal from Reece Burke to finally settle the tie, meaning Arnautovic had to play over 50 minutes of unwanted action ahead of a schedule (BOU cry bha WAT liv swa BUR) that has strong potential for more excellent returns from the in-form Austrian.

However, that’s tempered by the fact that he missed the second match of double Gameweek 22 and the Hammers’ initial goalless draw against Shrewsbury that followed.

Manager David Moyes made seven changes to the side that had thumped the Terriers, with Angelo Ogbonna (6.2%), Manuel Lanzini (2.6%), who has seen his ownership jump by 32,000+ this week, Arthur Masuaku (2.3%) and Pedro Obiang (1.5%) all obliged to play the full 120 minutes last night.

The reward for their 1-0 win is a fourth round tie with either Bournemouth or Wigan.

If that ends up being an all-Premier League affair, it will mean a fifth round match for either West Ham, who will host Watford and then travel to Liverpool in between, or the Cherries, who are due at Huddersfield before, and entertain Newcastle after, the cup tie over the weekend of February 17.

    Very tempted to activate WC..
    How's it look?

    Pope
    Alonso, Jones, Ota
    Salah, Sterling, Sane*, Arnie, Albright
    Firmino, Kane

    Ell, Mee, Mcb, Memba

    *Sane could also be Mahrez

If you feel the WC is needed use it. You don’t have to hold it but it could benefit you during DGWs. If you team needs it then so be it. I activated mine last night btw

    Hi all

Just popping in to say I've written a short piece on Kane v Salah, expanding on the analogy that Kane has a higher ceiling but Salah has a higher floor as Andy mentioned on the scoutcast, too 🙂

Read it. Not bad at all. Although the comparison between the two has a little mistake. Kane's 8 points or more v Salahs 7 points or more.

Nice review thanks .... can’t see past a Salah & Kane captain rotation combo ...

When Kane has blanked 2 or 3 weeks on the bounce, then you Captain him for the next couple of weeks

When Kane has hauled 2 weeks on the bounce, then switch the arm band to the dependable Salah for a couple of weeks

Rotating the band on these two seems the way to go to try to catch the ‘ceiling’, and in trying to do this, it will probably average out as the same as just sticking with Salah if you get it wrong, imho 🙂

Haha yeah, I'm not too worried about either and might just captain Salah out of guilt this week with his propensity for points a great safety net!

as with most French places it's pretty quiet outside of the summer holiday season so some bars and restaurants would be shut, but i've been there a couple of times and found enough places, highly recommend 'L'Escargot' restaurant up in the old city/castle, L'Occitane/French style tapas cuisine

Yep, seafood in Portugal and north west Spain is some of the best around. Lots to see in Lisbon, It's one of the oldest cities in Europe. Between the view points, the replicas of Christ the redeemer and golden gate bridges, the hours you can spend wandering side streets, the food, the bars, gardens, very old buildings, the trams and tuk tuks zooming all over the city, and traditional Fado music playing. Is all reasonable prices too. V good coffee too. Outside there are Easy trains or buses to Sintra, Quinta da Regaleira, Obidos, Porto. Hope that's enough info haha.

Triple up on ManCity attack or not?

ManCity has upcoming mouthwatering fixtures, I currently have Sterling + Aguero & considering to get Sane too for next 3-4 fixtures.
With some alternatives also available like Arnautovic, Mahrez, Pogba - I am not sure to triple up on City or go with one of the alternatives.

    Suggestions please?

Have Lingard, Salah, Sterling, RLC in MF with Kun+Kane+DLC upfront.

Not too sure about it. I just dropped KdB and Richarlison for Mahrez and Ramsey (punt). However, Sane and Sterling (had him since the start) are much cheaper and they could easily match the rest of the MF around 8M.

I am captaining Salah. Sterling might be a nice "punt" though. Don't think he will be highly captained after his performace against Liverpool. I would get Morata and KdB out for Kane and Mahrez (or another MF). I would do that for a hit but no more than -4.

Hi guys, any thoughts would be highly appreciated.
    Team:
    Adrian
    Vertonghen - Jones - Ota
    Salah - KdB - Eriksen - Arnie
    Depoitre - Kane (C) - Firmino

    Begovic - Kenny - Masuaku - King
    Got 2 FT's. 0,0 itb.

I'm not sure if Mahrez will do better than Eriksen this gameweek, since Mahrez played 81 minutes and is likely to get some rest. But I need to get Mahrez in.
Also got my concerns over Depoitre, since he gets rotated with Mounie.
    Toughts on the following transfers?
    Eriksen -> Mahrez
    Depoitre -> Wilson

    1. FC nelo
      • 8 Years

I would probably remove KdB and King to Sterling/Sane + Mahrez (if you can afford this) and bench Depoitre.

I can't see Leicester benching Mahrez. 81min Tuesday and then playing Saturday. Don't think he needs more rest than three whole days.

I feel like there are 7 changes i'd like to make, and doing so now would gain me more points in the long term than holding onto it until gameweek 36.

I think 7 changes is borderline myself. I’d probably take a few hits now and wc later. Gw28 to negotiate too.

Personally I think you can gain more by using it before Gw33/36 but I think gw29 might be optimal

Mahrez or Arnie are good cpt choices for this GW or go with one of the usual suspects Kane - Sterling - Salah?

Raiola seemingly about to get his client- a player who can barely make United's matchday squads - the same salary Sanchez was offered to stay at Arsenal. unbelievable. This was Wengers masterplan?

I read a great report in the guardian about a West Ham game. Went along the lines of:

“Andy Carroll doesn’t ‘play’ football. He wreaks football. He inflicts football. He falls from the sky like the fuselage of a burning Messerschmitt”. Classic

Think of the Azpi assists though

Looking ok? On a -4 already, itb to upgrade a defender most likely next week, Zanka ? Van Dijk or something.

    Foster (Elliott)
Alonso - Jones - Ogbonna (Zanka, Hunemeir)
    Salah (c) - Sterling - Arnautovic - Son (RLC)
    Kane - Vardy - Firmino

    -4
    1.0 itb

    Hi all. A last call:

    1. DCL and Son > Aguero and 5.5 (-4)
    2. RLC > Arnie (bench DCL)
    3. DCL > Vardy

    DDG
    Otamendi Christensen Ogbonna (Mee Dunk)
    Salah Sterling Son Lingard (RLC)
    Kane Firmino DCL

Currently on 1) as DCL is not likely to play, and Son's fixtures turn bad. Annoyingly, 0.1 off the OX. Might go Dacoure (only 6pts less than Richarlison), and he rotates well with RLC

Good move, or am I just trying to convince myself it is???

Still got free hit and other chips...

For research for the Scoutcast last night I took a look at the top 10k ownership for the "template" and some template busters. Just in case you don't want to go look for yourself...

    Alonso - 45%
    Otamendi - 70%
    Jones - 42% (Valencia 2.1%)
    De Gea - 45.7%
    Arnautovic - 24.6%
    Son - 37%
    Sterling - 84%
    Salah - 81%
    Lingard - 34%
    Kane - 60%
    Firmino - 46%

    KDB - 13%
    Hazard - 12%
    Pogba - 9.2%
    Sane - 5.1%
    David Silva - 3.3%
    Lanzini - 2.6%
    Shaqiri - 2.1%
    Masuaku - 10.6%
    Vardy - 9.6%
    Morata - 13.9%
    Aguero - 18.4%
    Lukaku - 3.1%
    Van Dijk - 3.5%
    Maguire - 5.7%

For me Sterling, Salah and probably Otamendi are the true template picks, probably Kane just about but still 4 out of 10 managers don't own him.

Everyone else is less than 50% that I looked at

Oh haha, fair enough! Nice honesty! That site is great for this time of year when the template forms. wish there was more on 100k stats vs 10k stats, What do you think?

KDB is tempting but is he worth the price. I can do Alli to KDB for free but mane and Mahrez seem better value?

Looking at the gw 23 ownerships (these numbers will only increase for players like son arnie Jones firmino in the week 24 stats )

      Firmino 57
      Lingard 46
      Kane 76.5

You're right. I'm not sure why I got different numbers for those. For the rest they seem to be correct at a quick glance.

Kane definitely template then. Firmino getting there

    OMG I did it!

    I have Welbeck 🙂 You don't 🙂 hate templates..

    Courtois
    Alonso Kola Robertson
    Salah Arnie Alli Ramsey
    Kun Vardy Welbeck

    isn't it so cool??

Can anyone suggest how I best use my 2FT (£0) in the bank:

    Fabianski
    Otamendi / Mee / Masuaku
    Salah / Sterling / Arnie / Alli
    Kane / Firmino / Morata

    Elliot / Kabasele / Mee / RLC

Christensen, Alli, Firminho > Alonso, Lingard, Aguero (-4)?

    I'd captain Aguero

    Got 2FT...

    A. Christensen + DCL -> Alonso + Quaner
    B. RLC + DCL -> Lingard + Quaner

Hard to say without knowing your team structure but A as Alonso is better than Lingard

How does the team look for the weekend? (on -4... 0.7 mill in the bank)

    Courtois
    Alonso Jones Masuaku Kenny
    Salah Sterling Arnautovic Lingard
    Kane Aguero

    Elliot; Calvert-Lewin, Loftus-Cheek, Duffy

    So is our plan
Free hit GW 31 or 35
WC GW 33 or 36 just before DGWks.
Triple captain and bench boost GW 34 and 37.
    Am I right?

Which 5m-6m midfielder should I downgrade Alli to? Choupo-Moting has the fixtures but Stoke are awful, have a new manager etc.

Only other ones I can see are Gross (meh) and Albrighton (solid but unspectacular).

Depends how much you want vardy/mahrez. if you don't want them I'd be looking at Albrighton. Other option to watch is Ox

It also depends if you have kane, firmino/aguero and what you want long term in terms of formation. personally since I didn't get firmino early, I'm looking at wilson as a 2nd striker and Mahrez as 5th mid. I prefer Mahrez/wilson to Firmino/albrighton. Thats just me though as I can rotate 3-5-2,4-5-1,4-4-2
