Spot The Differential – Gameweek 24

Bournemouth’s Jordon Ibe and West Bromwich Albion’s Ahmed Hegazi proved successful punts last week and we’re continuing to seek out value options who can help catapult Fantasy managers up the rankings.

A trio of midfielders have taken our fancy for Gameweek 24, with all three carrying good form into favourable match-ups.

Marc Albrighton

A goal and three assists over the last five Gameweeks means Leicester City’s Marc Albrighton enters this afternoon’s promising home fixture against Watford in good nick.

Despite the fierce competition for attacking spots, Albrighton has started each of the last six and has been influential in the recent revival under Claude Puel.

Indeed, he has been involved in 50% of the Foxes goals since Puel arrived, and has also supplied more successful crosses (16) than any team-mate.

While he has only produced seven shots over the same spell, two of those have been big chances, which is more than fellow midfielders Riyad Mahrez and Demarai Gray (both one).

So for those who are struggling to afford the in-form Algerian for their five-man midfields, Albrighton’s 5.6 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) should be easier to accommodate.

Watford travel to the King Power Stadium without a clean sheet in 10 attempts and lost 3-0 in the corresponding fixture last season, with Albrighton on the scoresheet that day.

Only four teams have conceded more big chances than the Hornets (10) over the last four Gameweeks, while Leicester have scored five goals in their last two home encounters, so they look primed for another strong showing in front of their own fans.

Part of only 3.3% of squads, Albrighton can deliver great value over the next six Gameweeks, with further favourable home clashes against Swansea City, Stoke City and Bournemouth to follow.

Manuel Lanzini

Marko Arnautovic is the most transferred-in player in FPL this week, but we shouldn’t forget about his team-mate Manuel Lanzini.

The Argentine plundered 14 points in last weekend’s 4-1 victory over Huddersfield Town and edges Arnautovic in a number of statistical categories over their respective last four matches.

Lanzini has bettered the Austrian for both shots (10 to nine) and efforts in the box (eight to five), while the pair are level for efforts on target, with five apiece.

The in-form Hammers host Bournemouth at the London Stadium this afternoon.

No team has given up more big chances than Eddie Howe’s side (11) over the last four Gameweeks and they shipped three goals when the two clubs met back in Gameweek 20.

With the upcoming fixtures (BOU CRY bha WAT) favourable for David Moyes’s men, there is even a case for a midfield double-up of both Lanzini and Arnautovic.

At 6.8 in FPL, Lanzini is another mid-price midfield option who can defy his price tag during this upcoming stretch.

He has an ownership of only 2.8% in FPL and further double-digit hauls like the one he produced in Gameweek 23 would certainly be hugely beneficial for those Fantasy managers who need to reduce mini-league deficits.

Anthony Martial

For those whose budgets can stretch that bit further, Manchester United’s Anthony Martial is an intriguing short-term option.

The France international, who is available for 8.0, is owned by just 2.6% of FPL managers despite becoming increasingly influential for Jose Mourinho’s side.

He will take his strong form into this afternoon’s trip to Burnley, having registered two goals and an assist over the last two Gameweeks and producing more shots (eight) than any of his team-mates.

Martial has racked up an impressive eight goals and five assists from just 12 starts this season, and his tally of 98 points is already better than the 95 he managed last term.

Although the Clarets have been resolute at home, conceding only eight goals, five of those have come in recent home defeats to Spurs and Liverpool.

The former Monaco player will also have fond memories of his previous trip to Turf Moor – he produced a goal and an assist in a 2-0 win in the corresponding fixture last season.

With his confidence levels up and perhaps extra motivation gained from the impending arrival of Alexis Sanchez, this may be a good time to take a risk on Martial.

To follow on; the reasons why I'm thinking of dumping Alonso....

    1) Chelsea clean sheets could be more scarce over the next few. They are a team low on confidence and have not easy away games at Brighton and Watford and a home game vs. Bournemouth in between (v attacking, fancy them to score). They then have a nice game vs. Brom, before a likely blank (or Utd game) and then a Manchester city game

    2) Lots of chatter about Chelsea signing Emerson to reduce the workload on Alonso, which makes sense given how many minutes he plays. When CL rolls back around, he could start seeing reduced minutes if that transfer goes through

I could do Alonso + Arnie -> Van Dijk + Son + 0.4m. Think Arnie has overperformed a little b it whereas Son can sustain the current run he's on even through the tougher fixtures. And think, if 1) and 2) play out, then there would be little to choose between Alonso and Van Dijk

    Thoughts?

You refused to acknowledge how bad Rich and Morata were a week ago no? Can't take you seriously. Alonso is a season keeper and you're trying to explain away bad decisions why you don't have him since weeks ago

Alonso's attacking threat is too strong, he's basically a winger and takes all direct FKs. I wouldn't shed just yet.

I got Alonso in this week to catch up on all the points I'm missing out on, and I'd like to keep Arnie with the form he's in. Arnie's also a good 5th midfielder, if you want a team with two strikers and five midfielders.

There is. Fixtures are great, he’ll get CS and BPS. But will his attacking points really be so good? Chelsea can’t score for love nor money and their solutions involve buying Andy Carroll or Peter Crouch. It’s just that you can get CS got significantly less than 7.2. Don’t get me wrong, I owned earlier in the season when he did nothing and have been seriously considering getting him back, including today but getting Arnie and Mahrez for today took precedence. I just wonder about Chelsea’s goal threat... they don’t even have Pedro today (no Morata increases their goal threat)

5 CS in the last 6 PL games. The only game hey didn't keep a CS was at Emirates.
Wait till the transfer happens to see how it will affect Alonso's minutes.

Toby might be back next week. If Spurs go back to 3 at the back, Son's place is less guaranteed.
Liverpool more likely to concede goals than out form Chelsea.

I'd keep Alonso and Arnie for their fixtures.

Good point about Toby, certainly possible Son drops out (though not sure given his form). Makes rotation across the Spurs mids more likely though

Agree re. Alonso - Conte actively looking at a backup/ rotation for Alonso with CL or horizon, however I fancy them to get knocked out by Barca so it depends if you think Alonso will retain place in team over the new singing, or at least get a good 60 - 70 mins each game. I worry that he is an expensive rotation risk.

I would keep Arnie - great form and great fixtures.

I doubt Che will get past the next round in the CL so I wouldn't worry too much. If a new lb arrives he won't play immediately as well and you can go from Alonso to any defender.

      Nothing to worry about imo

VVD is the biggest fluff hype going. He'll probably score goal and prove me wrong but Liverpool 2 away CS all season. That's 2 less than Brighton away. Anyone who knows football knows you have to be patient for CS when new CB joins new club. Bedding in period and all that

Liverpool look a lot more solid in defence now away from home but agree it makes sense to wait on VVD. I was amazed his price went up immediately. Lovren was a great defender at Saints too and look at him now.

After a few red arrows (OR: 50k -> 180k), went for the wildcard and the template . Worried about not having Mahrez for the coming GW. Also concerned re. Lingard rotation with Sanchez looking likely to come in.

    Current team:
    Pickford -- Elliot
Azpi -- Van Dijk -- Ota -- Masuaku -- Mbemba
    Salah -- Sterling -- Son -- Arnie -- Lingard
    Kane -- Firm -- Ayew

    Son+Lingard+x -> Mahrez+Shaqiri+x
Need to downgrade one player to enable this but not sure who? Also, no Utd defence (i.e. Jones)...

That's hard. Wilson, maybe, because it's easier to get attacking points than defending. Chelsea might just let in a goal or two and that will be Christensen's points gone, if he doesn't do anything else.

Doing the same transfer mate. Got it down to either Pickford or Schmeichel but think Pickford will be my man between the sticks.

No League Cup finalist has ever been required to play their blank game in the same GW midweek after the final

Here are all of the fixtures in the past eight seasons that have been postponed due to clashes with the League Cup Final.

All postponements have resulted in Blanks (i.e. they weren't moved to the following midweek).
