Scout Notes – Prolific Reds Deliver

All of Liverpool’s much-vaunted front three find the net in a 4-1 win over West Ham, while Stoke City’s Xherdan Shaqiri impresses again as Leicester City’s in demand assets falter.

More than 1.6 million Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers made Mohamed Salah Gameweek 28’s most-captained player and he responded with a third straight double-digit haul – the first time that even he has been so consistent this season.

The Egyptian scored and set up Emre Can’s opener to produce ten points, although he was denied any bonus after missing a big chance and being tackled four times.

Maximum bonus instead went to Can, who also provided an assist for Roberto Firmino’s goal. The Brazilian brought in two bonus points himself, while an assist for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain helped him to an extra point.

Firmino, who was the second most bought player of the Gameweek (161,000+), has now earned bonus in ten of the 11 matches in which he has scored.

But he’s only produced one double-figure haul in eight Gameweeks, which shows that he’s best seen as an accompaniment to captain Salah, rather than a rival for the armband.

Sadio Mane followed up his Champions League hat-trick with a first domestic strike since Gameweek 23 and he also out-shot Salah six to five to strengthen his claims as a third Liverpool option for the reduced Gameweek 31 schedule.

Some 93,000 new managers had instead opted for Virgil van Dijk, but the Liverpool defence again failed to keep a clean sheet – they’ve managed just two in eight Gameweeks. That includes a run of four Anfield matches without a shut-out, with seven goals conceded in that run.

But left-back Andrew Robertson came out with points thanks to his attacking contribution – he supplied three chances on the day and the assist for Mane’s goal to pick up a bonus point.

The Scotland international also seems to have put any fears of rotation to bed, with coach Jurgen Klopp giving Alberto Moreno just three minutes from the bench.

Since being named on the teamsheet against Brighton in Gameweek 15, Robertson has started 15 of Liverpool’s last 18 matches in all competitions – and two of those non-starts were cup matches.

On the opposite flank, Trent Alexander-Arnold has now started the last four domestic and European fixtures, but the fit-again Joe Gomez is likely to end that run at some point.

With Newcastle and Watford at home in the next three Gameweeks, investment in Liverpool assets is sure to remain high.

And as the Reds have scored at least twice in ten of their last 11 league matches, most of the interest will stay focused on their prodigious attacking talent.

West Ham appeal fading

Chicharito was perhaps unlucky to make only the bench at Anfield after producing three goals and an assist over the last four matches.

The striker made way for the returning Manuel Lanzini as Marko Arnautovic moved back up front.

The Austrian had been bought by 110,000+ for Gameweek 28, but he made it just two goals in five matches despite one of his three attempts hitting the bar today.

Arnautovic, with 5.2% ownership, remains a good differential option ahead of huge matches with Swansea City and Burnley.

But a blank Gameweek 31 and a run-in involving both Manchester sides, Chelsea and Arsenal will dampen his appeal in the longer term.

Substitute Michail Antonio found the net at Anfield, with Cheikhou Kouyate providing the assist.

Shaqiri on target

Stoke City assets aren’t exactly forming an orderly queue to be considered for our Gameweek 31 sides, but Xherdan Shaqiri continues to be the in-form exception.

The midfielder’s opener, from a Joe Allen assist, in the 1-1 draw at Leicester City was his third goal in as many matches, much to the delight of his 112,000+ new owners.

Shaqiri has blossomed under Paul Lambert, producing three goals and an assist in the five league matches the manager has been in charge.

And with a trip to Southampton and a home clash with Everton to come, there’s scope for more of the same from the Swiss international.

But back-to-back matches with Arsenal and Spurs after Gameweek 31 mean that Shaqiri’s place in most squads won’t survive the Wildcards played either in Gameweek 32 or 33.

Elsewhere for the Potters, Jack Butland’s nine saves against should have earned him hero status to go with his maximum bonus award, only for a dreadful error to ruin all that.

The keeper allowed Marc Albrighton’s cross to bounce off him and into the net for an own goal, denying Lambert a third clean sheet of his tenure.

Stoke remain the most porous defence in the league, with 54 goals conceded, but they’ve definitely tightened up under the new manager, allowing more than one goal in a match just once since he took charge.

Their schedule, however, means few managers will look past Shaqiri, who is currently the most signed player following today’s action.

Leicester pair struggle

The Potters’ new-found resilience went some of the way to explaining the blanks endured by the Foxes’ big-name players, Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy.

The pair were brought in by 132,000 and 148,000 respectively for the Gameweek, but Vardy, in particular, endured a frustrating afternoon, managing just one shot on goal.

Mahrez had a match-high six attempts – Leicester fired in 19 overall – while Vardy perhaps surprisingly led the way for chances created, with three.

Claude Puel’s side miss Gameweek 31 as they’ll be in FA Cup action, but have a favourable next two (BOU wba) and a decent run-in that could persuade many to hold their assets ahead of a likely double Gameweek 34 and perhaps even 37.

They’ll have to start delivering more consistently, though – the Foxes have drawn two and lost two of their last four matches, keeping no clean sheets and scoring just four goals.

Is Salah the best example of all time of a player who's good in fantasy but bad in real life? Gets a lot of goals and assists but is a very average player in real life and his bonus point tally reflects this.

          1. MTPockets

He is not an average player in real life. He still does very well to get into those goal-scoring positions and creates his own chances.

Obviously he's not as clinical as Kane but he's still a great player. He probably is a better fantasy player than real world player (e.g. he is a worse player than Coutinho but scores better in fantasy than Coutinho) but that doesn't mean he's a bad player.

Hard to keep him wide on his right foot when he pretty much plays through the middle. Check his average position. Pretty much a striker.

Not at all. Salah is having the season of his life and he only has 1 more bonus point than eg. Hazard (who misssed the first 7 games of the season through injury). This shows that Salah is very profligate and wasteful and isn't as clinical and efficient as someone like Hazard.

Salah plays for a more offensive team.

I don't think it's impressive scoring a goal a game when you're also missing 4 chances a game, which is what Salah is doing and which is why he loses a lot of BPS.

Sure, but the reason as to why bonus points were introduced to fantasy in the first place was to reward players who are good in real life but not so good in fantasy terms (goals and assists). That's why I see bonus points as being a better indicator of one's ability tha just goals and assists. Hence why I don't rate Salah in real life - his bonus point tally is very average.

You're only half right imo as BPS are designed to reward a certain type of player to compensate for lack of raw points, usually the kind that are very involved in buildup play (like xGchain) but not directly involved in goals themselves

Essentially, yes. It's their stats... successful take ons, shots on target, goals, chances created, etc.. Losing the ball, shots off target etc. all things that lose you bonus and are indicative of someone with much room for improvement.

Obviously he's a good player, but it's basically a matter of just being fast with stamina in an extremely offensive team.

Salah having the season of his life got 3 double digits in a row breaking goal scoring records as a midfielder and some clueless cretins criticising him for not getting bonus. Unbelievable.

Doesn't get all the bonus points because he plays in a team that's arguably more balanced than others... in any case, he's only 4 bonus points off Kane, so I don't really see he's missing that many bonus points... not sure how you can say that someone who's averaging pretty much a goal a game in the Premier League is bad in real life?!!

Ridiculous statement. So a fiery striker like costa is worse than that donkey lukaku who just scores and doesn't get involved in games. These bonus points reward play makers not aggressive wingers and strikers

Mili for sure is a good option too but the fixtures leading up to GW31 aren't appealing whatsoever for Palace - and Huddersfield have Swansea at home before the GW31 game, so means you could have the option of getting him in one week earlier

Just watched MOTD, losing a double Brighton cleanie late on is very frustrating, especially when one of your players scores the OG after an absolutely blatant handball from Abraham. Them the breaks in FF!

Had a feeling Dunk would score today - I just wish he wasn't busy becoming a rival to Martin Skrtel, Richard Dunne and Carra in the goalscoring charts.

Losing Pope's cleanie in the 90th minute was also frustrating, especially since the goal was controversial with the ref's position causing a change of possession.

I bet it was. When you get so close its horrible I know.

But to lose a double cleanie with an OG when the goal shouldn't have stood hurts a bit more!

Aye that is annoying, but it swings and randabouts. I got a goal from Craig Dawson this week that I never thought I'd get.

I watched that game live and Southampton never looked like scoring they did not deserve that goal. They needed the ref to help them out with that one.

Dunk has 4 of this year. Trying to get to Carragher levels.

I was very wrong about Shaquri. He is doing very well. Will definitely get him in for 31

Shaqiri made maximum use of a few openings for stoke and been clinical but stoke are so shit. Wish I had kept him now

Wow mate, 12th last season in the end, massive! Knew you were flying high but what a finish!
How did it go so wrong for you this season?
I finished to 5k in my first season taking it seriously last season but this has been a shocker! Combo of bad luck, bad moves, being too patient with certain assets (Alli & Sane) and not patient enough with others has attributed to my crappy season!

Last season i was able to spend a lot of time watching the PL from the get go and was able to get a good handle on the league early on but for the 1st half of this season i was extremely busy with work and could not put in any/much time into this game and subsequently missed trends price rises and even deadlines and then starting taking huge punts trying to catch up and duly got stung.

To do well at this game you have to be able to put some time into it and be obsessed but sometimes life just dont allow this unfortunately.

Yeah, fair enough, it's not easy to find all of that free time alright! Def a good thing though man, spending all of your free time obsessed with a game isn't healthy.
What has surprised me after coming on here last season is how addictive the game can become!

Arnautovic the safer choice, isn't he? Starts and plays up front. Arguably better fixtures for Ramsey but he's more of a punt imo — currently flagged, tho great when he starts and the team isn't doing an Arsenal.

Getting Walcott instead of Shaq a few weeks ago is starting to really get to me. Each Shaq goal is a damn worldie and Walcott has dropped off a cliff...

I don't want to get blinded by 31, Walcott should go, but should I just straight swap to Shaq? Or suck it up and hold?
