Scout Notes – Salah Hits New Heights

Liverpool stroll past Watford 5-0 as Mohamed Salah single-handedly ensures a bumper haul for most Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers despite Gameweek 31’s reduced schedule.

The Egyptian was captained by 1.9 million (33.8%), 93 of the top 100 FPL managers and, as revealed by Ragabolly in his new article, 88.8% of the top 10,000.

A further 20,137 used their Triple Captain chip on him – 77.8% of the 25,883 played.

All that backing paid off as Salah delivered a first hat-trick in a Liverpool shirt, with four goals in total (from four shots), an assist and maximum bonus points bringing in a season’s best tally – by any player – of 29 points.

The records he’s accruing stretch ever further.

He’s now scored or assisted in 13 of his 15 home starts this season (17 goals and six assists), netted in his last six home Gameweeks (11 goals) and produced 14 double-figure scores in all.

For all these reasons, even without a double Gameweek to come, Salah surely has to be retained by all bar the bravest of managers.

Liverpool’s fixtures (cry eve BOU wba STK che BHA) are certainly strong enough to support more Salah hauls, but the situation is not so clear-cut for Liverpool’s other attackers.

More than 531,000 managers brought in either Roberto Firmino or Sadio Mane ahead of today’s deadline and both delivered.

The latter produced two assists for Salah, both somewhat fortunate as the main man did most of the work to score from them, but it was a fourth successive Gameweek of returns from Mane nonetheless.

Firmino, meanwhile, was denied a first-half strike by a smart Orestis Karnezis save, but got his goal with an audacious flick from Salah’s cross after the break.

The Brazilian now has three goals and two assists from the last five starts, but he is arguably now disposable as managers move for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Romelu Lukaku and Jamie Vardy ahead of their forthcoming double Gameweeks.

That trio are already among the top four most bought ahead of Gameweek 32, although Firmino is currently right behind them in fifth.

Firmino and Mane’s form could also have a bearing on those pondering the Gameweek 32 or 33 Wildcard.

Liverpool go to Palace next and have three of the next four away from Anfield.

Firmino has three goals and two assists from his last six away trips. Indeed, two goals and an assist have arrived over his last three, with the recent defeat at Manchester United his only blank in that run.

Mane has been less productive – he has just a single goal and two assists from his last six appearances on the road. That last strike away from home came back in Gameweek 22 at Burnley.

The other factor to consider is that Liverpool face their Champions League Quarter Final with Manchester City four days after the trip to Palace, with the second leg to follow the Merseyside derby in Gameweek 33. Rotation has not been a concern when considering the Liverpool front three for several months, but this period will certainly be a test for Klopp’s resolve in that respect.

Elsewhere, those managers who didn’t solely invest in the Liverpool front three enjoyed a clean sheet – the side’s 13th of the season – from the likes of Virgil van Dijk and the excellent Andrew Robertson, who boosted his reputation with a superb cross for Salah’s second goal.

That was the full-back’s second assist in four Gameweeks, although there was no such joy for Trent Alexander-Arnold’s 3.9% ownership as Joe Gomez returned to the starting line-up after a five-match absence.

Even Robertson’s first double-digit haul of the season is unlikely to save him, or any of his backline colleagues, as managers look for defenders with double Gameweeks to potentially boost their returns.

Substitute Danny Ings set up the final goal on a record-breaking FPL day when many managers ended up with 100+ points from just the four matches played.

Who would ever think 96 points is only slightly above average in a GW with only 4 games.
Write off Salah though as 58 points is what almost everyone got.
    What a saturday.
Time for WC's now that will determine your season.
    good luck EVERYONE!!!!

Chilwell is a trap. Look how easy Leicester's fixtures have been lately and how they've managed not to keep any clean sheets.
      As an ex-owner, I don't recommend Leicester's defence.

Thoughts on keeping Alonso on the wildcard?

I've held him through his monstrous hauls since GW12 and subsequent terrible run. However with 2 double gameweeks to come I am tempted to keep him. He is still playing very advanced and has been unlucky not to get some attacking returns in the last few gameweeks.

So the general consensus is either one of the following two options.

A - Go heavy up top with Firmino, Auba, Lukaku with a weak defense and 4 solid mid
    or
B - Go 2 up top from (Auba / firmino / luk / Vardy) with barnes as the 3rd and a stronger mid and defense.

Are people doing A or B? and why?

I'm leaning towards B with Auba Firmino Murray/Deeney, because I expect more points from midfielders like Son, Willian, Mkhi, Mahrez, Salah.

B for me with either Barnes or Ayew instead of Firmino.
In a dgw bench boost scenario I prefer the money evenly spread as opposed to normal balanced squad with a 4.2 mid and non playing keeper.Id rather Barnes and Arnie than Firmino McTom for instance.Althoigh Kenedy at 4.7(?) could open possibilities.

I need to prepare for 35. Plan to have Silva and Mkhi in my power 5. Currently have Sterling penciled in ahead of Son because of 35.

I however would want Son for his run of home games.

    Would you rather
    A) Get Alonso and have only 0.2m itb, which takes away the easy access to Son later on

    B) Bailly and 1.4m itb for switching around mids/Kane in later on etc.

    C) Davies and 1.6m itb for the same purposes as B

      Gw 34 3 Arsenal
Gw35 bench 4 players with blank (DeGea Alonso Son Lukaku). The rest have a game.
      37 use 4 transfers from 34 + 4 bench 35 players + 3 Arsenal = my 11 for 37

Spare a though for us paupers 😉 Definitely downgrade someone and upgrade that bench. Unnecessary bench headache every week and gives you a comically bad bench. either Willian or Vardy imo.

Cheers. Was thinking Vardy too because of Mahrez. Who would you suggest?

Yep, I'd suggest Vardy for that reason

Nah not playing. Costs 3.9 and would play 1 keeper every week. I see you comment to poat above regarding your midfield and going cheaper in defence. Will you play 5 mids then? Who will be your forwards then?

That’s a sick midfield, although likely to be the template one now.

I’d be inclined to downgrade Smalling and Mustafi and see if you have enough for Firmino to Lukaku. You can get a Burnley and Swansea def in there instead.

Or downgrade Vardy and get Lukaku for Firmino and a cheap 3rd striker like Barnes?

Walcott IMO. Biggest troll and spend change wisely. At least Shaq can be benched easily

Thanks all. Am looking to ship both Walcott and shaq before 34 its just a matter of who goes first this week. Willian and son the other midfield targets...

Anyone over near Leicester or Wigan way? What's the weather like? Lots of snow in Surrey!

Live in Wigan. Near the ground. Up early. Well excited.
There's light dusting of snow. Playable plus we have underpitch heating.

Live 20 miles from Leicester. We've got snow about 5cm deep here and drifting, but we normally get it worse than the city. I expect it to go ahead without too many problems,

    Pls suggest one of -
    1. Son (played in striker role in absence of Kane.)
    2. Mahrez (on paper fixtures look easy. But they come up against Newcastle and burnley, where I don't expect much goals)

Why are people picking Silva ahead of Sterling. Just the fact that he got a brace?
