Double Gameweek 34 – Analysis and Reaction

After a long wait, we finally received confirmation of Double Gameweek 34 this afternoon.

Planning and preparation now gets underway in earnest as we assess the best ways to tackle the run-in after eight teams were handed a pair of fixtures in Gameweek 34.

Confirmed Double Gameweek 34 schedule
Bournemouth (liv MUN)
Brighton (cry TOT)
Burnley (LEI CHE)
Chelsea (sot bur)
Leicester (bur SOT)
Man United (WBA bou)
Southampton (CHE lei)
Spurs (MCI bha)

This leaves six matches still requiring a new date.

Chelsea vs Huddersfield
Leicester vs Arsenal
Man City vs Brighton
Swansea vs Southampton
Tottenham vs Newcastle
West Ham vs Man United

The Premier League have confirmed that these will be rescheduled by Tuesday April 3 – before Gameweek 33 – though it is now expected that those 12 teams will now face a Double Gameweek 37.

Providing they drop in Gameweek 37, the schedule would be as follows:

Potential Double Gameweek 37 schedule
Arsenal (BUR lei)
Brighton (MUN mci)
Chelsea (LIV HUD)
Huddersfield (mci che)
Leicester (WHU ARS)
Man City (HUD BHA)
Man United (bha whu)
Newcastle (wat tot)
Southampton (eve swa)
Swansea (bou SOT)
Tottenham (wba NEW)
West Ham (lei MUN)

This is the reverse of the previous school of thought, which had many managers making plans based on the assumption that 12 teams would be playing twice in Double Gameweek 34.

The surprise switch in today’s fixtures may now have many managers reassessing their plans for the run-in, particularly those who still have one or more of the Wildcard, Bench Boost and Free Hit chips in hand.

Earlier this week it was revealed that this is thought to be 12% of the top 10,000 managers and an estimated 20% of “active” managers.

Significantly, some 52,000+ have already played their Wildcard since the Gameweek 31 deadline passed, perhaps expecting that the likes of Arsenal and Man City to also be handed a Double Gameweek 34. Indeed, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the most signed ahead of a return to domestic action, claiming over 125,000 new owners so far.

Immediately, you can see that today’s confirmation has made matters far more difficult for those without the Free Hit chip who were targeting the Gunners’ striker for an expected Double Gameweek 34.

Arsenal were previously one of six teams – along with Burnley, Man City, Newcastle, Swansea and West Ham – who were all expected to have a Double Gameweek 34 and also play in Gameweek 35.

Now, however, that applies only to Burnley.

Without the Free Hit, managers will have to balance their building for the Double Gameweek and then use transfer hits to repair the squad ahead of the Gameweek 35 postponements. What’s more, with the likes of Arsenal and Man City treated to favourable fixtures, a Free Hit in Gameweek 35 could prove even more devastating than the success story that was Gameweek 31.

Certainly, for those still holding their Bench Boost chips, Gameweek 34 was the favoured window prior to today’s reveal.

Now, though, with five of the top six sides – Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Man United and Spurs – all likely to play twice in Gameweek 37, some will be setting their sights on the latter round instead.

Indeed, City, United and Spurs all face a pair of opponents outside of the top eight and will clearly offer huge points potential.

Much depends on the state of your squad, of course, and the number of chips still at your disposal. Indeed, this afternoon’s news could provide food for thought for those managers who avoided “dead-ending” their squads in Gameweek 31 and have yet to play the Wildcard.

Should they now favour Double Gameweek 37, they could now play the Free Hit Chip in Double Gameweek 34, with the Wildcard in Gameweek 36 and Bench Boost in Gameweek 37.

On the other hand, while the allure of Double Gameweek 37 may be greater on paper, the reality could be that, by then, many of the sides may have little to play for in the league.

Those Bench Boosting in Double Gameweek 37 will be relying on many teams still being motivated and therefore less prone to rotation, yet there’s a chance that the fight for survival and battle for top-four finishes could be done and dusted by then.

Meanwhile, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Man United and Spurs could all still be involved in cup competitions come Double Gameweek 37.

In the case of Man City and Arsenal, the Champions League and Europa League semi-final second legs are in the midweek before the start of Double Gameweek 37. Meanwhile, the Europa League final is just three days after Gameweek 38.

Chelsea, Spurs and Man United all still have hopes of clinching the FA Cup, with the final taking place on May 19 – six days after the end of the season.

You only have to look back to Double Gameweek 37, where Antonio Conte named the following XI at home to Watford in the second of Chelsea’s matches, with one eye on the FA Cup final on May 27.

Begovic; Zouma, Ake, Terry; Azpilicueta, Chalobah, Kante, Kenedy; Hazard, Willian; Batshuayi

While those who opt to Bench Boost in Double Gameweek 34 may have fewer big-hitting, explosive options to load up on, their squads could be less likely to suffer from unexpected teamsheets as fringe players get the chance of a run-out in the penultimate Gameweek.

With Harry Kane potentially still in the running along with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard, Christian Eriksen and Riyad Mahrez, it’s not as if we’ll short of premium, in-form picks for Double Gameweek 34.

Arguably, then, Fantasy managers who are looking to lessen the likelihood of rotation – and avoid a repeat of instances such as Conte’s infamous XI – may look to using an early Wildcard in Gameweek 32 or 33 in order to profit from the security of Double Gameweek 34 instead.

Choosing when to play the Triple Captain chip will also impact in our plans.

Looking at the main contenders in Double Gameweek 34, Kane – if fit – hosts Man City, Mahrez and Hazard have Burnley away, while Lukaku, although in form, has been far from explosive and managed three double-digit returns all season.

On the other hand, Kane’s Double Gameweek 37, away to West Brom and at home to Newcastle, could prove the big factor in deciding when to play our Triple Captain chip and therefore also our Bench Boost.

Granted, we won’t forgot this season’s Double Gameweek 22 in a hurry – the Spurs striker returned just three points against Swansea and West Ham – yet Kane’s exploits in the corresponding round last term will live far longer in the memory.

Five goals and an assist over 180 minutes’ pitch-time against Man United and Leicester in Double Gameweek 37 preceded a hat-trick at Hull in the season finale to clinch the Golden Boot.

Even if he fails to overcome Mohamed Salah as the top scorer in 2017/18, a fully-fit Kane’s security of pitch-time makes him a big favourite for the Double Gameweek 37 Triple Captain chip.

Again, while Man City also have the fixtures – at home to Huddersfield and Brighton – if Pep Guardiola’s men wrap up the league title early and progress past Liverpool into the Champions League semi-finals, rotation looks inevitable.

Indeed, their head-to-head with the Merseysiders could ultimately prove decisive in how we approach the remaining rounds of fixtures.

Defeat to Liverpool would leave City with only league matches left on their agenda and that might not be a bad thing, even if the title is wrapped up by that point.

As discussed on club’s official website earlier in the week, Guardiola’s men have as many as ten Premier League records in their sights.

Incentive enough, surely, to limit the chances of rotation should they fall to defeat and fail to reach the last four in Europe.

I like the double Arsenal switch in 34 - pondering that myself. Will certainly do Auba to Lukaku at least.

Similar thoughts to me with Auba -> Lukaku. I like the draft apart from double Burnley offence and Smalling. I think with Jones back Smalling is too risky pick on wc

Yeah that’s the decision to be made - reckon it could work out well though with they Arsenal fixtures. Barring any unforeseen injuries of course.

Probably could be better to just get Son straight in to have one planned transfer for GW34 (Auba -> Lukaku) just to lessen the risk in case of injuries etc.

Thoughts on this? NO FH left but BB in 34

    DDG Ryan
    Smalling Mustafi Robertson Lowton Morgan
    Salah Son Willian Mahrez Gudmonsson
    Auba Kaku Murray

2-4 transfers after GW34 (with 2FT) will give me 8 or 10 players

Apologies for the long post. This is my plan with ONLY BB / WC (already active) remaining:

    WC team this week:

    DDG Fab
    Tark Lowton Morgan Bauer Robertson
    Salah Mahrez Son Willian King
    Lukaku Auba Firmino

    —————————

Gives me this for the GW34 Double (* DGW) with no transfers. 8DGW players

    DDG*
    Tark* Lowton* Morgan*
    Salah Mahrez* Son* Willian*
    Lukaku* Auba Firmino

    Fab Robertson Bauer King

    —————————-

    GW35 Blank

2 FT: Willian + Lukaku -> City Mid + City Attack (can decide based on rotation but most likely BSilva + Jesus)

    Fab
    Tark Lowton Bauer Robertson
    Salah B Silva King
    Auba Firmino Jesus

    DDG Morgan Mahrez Son

    —————————-

Then use the next two weeks to get Kane in and BB for GW37.

Obviously some of this won’t go to plan with injuries / rotation etc but think it’s best I can do with Only BB remaining and WC already active

    Morning all,

Since the DGW announcement I feel more confused than ever. I have all my chips available - WC, BB, TC, FH - but it actually now seems more of a burden to have them all! For example, with more DGW in week 37 I’d like to BB then but that also seems to the best time to play TC on Kane potentially and obviously you can’t play two chips in the same week. Additionally, the whole risk of squad rotation is in an issue in 37 as mentioned in the article making gw 34 seem better to use BB with WC in 33 but the fixtures are better in 37 than gw 34. I genuinely don’t know what to do. Is anyone else in a similar boat? FYI my current team is:

    Pope-Elliot
    Chilwell-Daniels-Ota-Rob’son-Bavies
    Mahrez-Stanislas-Mo-Zaha-Walcott
    Kane-Wilson-Firmino

    1 FT and £2.3M itb

    Any thoughts greatly received. Cheers.

They will be your 4 bench players (Davies, Willian, Kane, Bally etc) plus you have 2 transfers before 37

One of the bench would have to be a keeper too. WC35 makes things uneccessarily hard imo but I’d be interested to see you team if you stick with that strategy

                  No choice for me really.

The bench was just an example of the type of players, probably have Fabs or DDG on the bench to boost in 37

But WC'ing in 35 would equally (if not more) hurt your team for GW37. And if you plan to BB in 37, then your GW37 needs to be as strong as possible 😉

Leicester, City, Chelsea Man U, Spurs, Arsenal and Swansea looks good for GW37. Out of those only Arsenal, City and Swansea plays in GW35 and Swansea got a bad matchup ? How will WC in GW35 help you?

I would rather lack a bit of DGW power in GW34, but use my TC and then survive GW35 before WC in 36. But that is me 😉

I am looking to play this team in GW34:

                        Lloris
                        Mee, Moses, Simpson
                        Gudmundsson, Albrighton, Salah, Sanchez (TC)
                        Firmino, Vardy, Aubemeyang

                        (Speroni, Otamendi, Richarlison, Lascelles)

Then I use 3 transfers before GW35 (probably something like): Sanchez, Vardy and Lloris -> City Striker, City Keeper and Arsenal Mid, and then my team would look like this in GW35:

                        Ederson
                        Mee, Lascelles, Otamendi
                        Salah, Richarlison, Gudmundsson, Özil/Mkhi
                        Jesus/Agüero, Firmino, Aubemeyang

                        (Speroni, Albrighton, Simpson, Moses)

This would cost me -12 in hits between now and GW35. Then WC in GW36 and BB in GW37

true but those -12 will able me to fill my squad in GW36 with those teams with best matchups in DGW37 (I will not pick a single Liverpool player etc.) If you WC in GW35 you have to pick pool players 😉 I think those -12 will be payed back lots of times by my super GW37 squad on BB in GW37.

Hotdogs - I was leaning toward this now but feel like my team is a bit crap at the moment and needs fixing. Could take some hits to do it I guess?

FPLShaq - feel exactly the same! Last year I played TC early and wasted it so wanted to learn from that but ironically it’s made it more difficult. Maybe TC on Kaku in DGW 34?

Having the TC is still obviously a benefit but it does give us a headache 😉

Yeah Kaku is an option but if I’m wildcarding in 33 I’m not sure I’d want him for MCI. I’ll likely get Auba for one week then swap to Kaku for BB34. Although DGW 37 is bigger I can still get a strong full 14(+Salah) for BB34 and then use TC in 37.

This will probably all change but what are your plans Mike?DGW37 isn’t even confirmed yet either!

    Pope
    VVD - Maguire - Dunk
    Albrighton - Son - Salah(vc) - Stanislas
    Auba(c) - Wilson - Tosun

    Elliot - Zaha - Gomez - Kelly

    I have 7.4m itb and 0FT

I have all chips remaining and now the fixtures are out plan to WC next GW.
Any reason I should pull the trigger this week or is it GTG this week?!

You're in a great position. Your current team is so so. I think you could play your WC now a get a better team, without damaging your DGW team. Arsenal have great run and you could squeeze in Mahrz or Vardy.

Still have all the chips too and was planning WC33 but I am tempted to pull the trigger now and get a good fixture from Auba and Lukaku, then be able to do Auba>Kane and downgrade elsewhere in 34

Those that WC now will play BB in 34 I would say. Too risky to save the team for 5 weeks and then BB.

But those of us (without the FH) Who will not have 14-15 DGW players in GW34 will use TC to make up for it 😉

It's not as black and white as that. I am looking at both options and leaning towards wc-ing now. Bb options are average at best in 34 but end of season rotation and beach factor may make wc 36 a bit of a lottery.

Bb not useful if 3 players don't actually play

i would argue that triple captain seems more sensible at 34 while 37, there might be risk or your captain being limited to the bench if there are Cup Competitions.

moreover the fixtures at the run end look great for all the big teams and there is a bigger pool to exploit than in 34

All valid arguments, but it's not a one size fits all.

If pool are out of Europe salah v Brighton in gw38 could outscored say lukaku in 34 with the triple captain chip.

              There's no right or wrong.

I hear you but as if you are considering triple captaining Lukaku, Sanchez has to at least be a consideration with superior underlying stats....if Lukaku scores a goal there's every chance Sanchez is providing the assist, plus we know his explosiveness when in form.

Hows this WC for BB 34

    DDG--Ryan
    Alonso--Smalling/Jones--Lowton--Morgan--3.9
    Son--Salah--Mahrez--Willian--Gross
    Auba--Lukaku--Murray

    Plan to save 33 then

    Auba > Vardy
    3.9 > Spurs defender

As a Leicester fan I would say neither Chilwell or Gray are nailed on.

Morgan > Simpson > Chilwell in my opinion for the defenders nailed on ness.

Gray will play at most 1 in 2. Got competition from Albrighton, Diabate and indirectly Iheanacho and Okazaki

No Free Hit left, Wildcard active... It's not over yet!

After yesterday's DGW announcement, so many people in my situation with no Free Hit and a Wildcard active find themselves in a tricky situation. My take on it is rather than complaint about it or feel like this is season over, let's get to work and find a way to make it work and show those more patient people (either with their FH or WC inactive) than we can still pull that off.

Spending less than 20 minutes this morning on FPL, I came up with a simple scenario which involves NO hits taken and gives you the following:

    GW34: 9 x DGW + Salah&Firmino = TC
    GW35: 11 players
    GW37: 15 x DGW= BB

For this you must have 2FT prior to GW35 and use them to remove 2 x DGW34 players for 2 players who have a fixture in GW35 and a DGW37. For instance Son & William to Mkhitaryan & Arnie ( or City, Newcastle). This involves rolling your transfer in GW33 or G34.

You then have an extra two transfers to use to bring your team up to 15 x DGW37 players for the Bench Boost. However this invloves getting rid of Salah and Bobby so I'm not sure you would want to do that anyway.

The template Wildcard GW32 players to use is as follow:

    Newcastle / Man United
    Chelsea / Burnley / Swansea / Burnley / Leicester
    City / Leicester / Liverpool / Tottenham / Chelsea
    Arsenal / Burnley / Liverpool

Obviuosly you can play around a bit with Newcastle and Swansea especially, one thing is for sure for this tactic to work you would need to triple up on Burnley which I dont think is necessary a bad thing!

Thanks for reading and I hope it will be helpful for some.

I’m also on wild card with no free hit.Been on since yesterday rearranging strategy and best I can come up with is ....
Concede not able to field eleven doublets in 34 without hits in 35 to get eleven out.So play 3 or 4 with single game weeks but also good fixtures.Ive kept Salah and have 3x Arsenal.Think this minimises the points difference between myself and those who can put out eleven double game week players. It also sets me up for 15 dgw players for bench boosting gw 37 with no hits.
Got a headache now so switching off for a couple of days.Good luck buddy.

Yep Lukaku and Auba give the best options. Even tho Mourinho negates his explosiveness think I'll likely TC Lukaku as he is a flat-track bully and it doesn't get much better than Brom and Bournemouth
