Introduction to the article type

With so many RMTs on site, we’re going to start collecting them in these RMT Community Articles.

To start, site regular and moderator Gregor has given us his team, and some explanations of his choices. Feel free to comment on his team.

This is also a place for you to post your team, and please respond to a few others while you’re at it!

Mods have been alerted, and will spend some time on these pages responding.

Let’s try to keep the main article pages free from RMTs!

Gregor’s RMT

Gunn/McCarthy, Fabianski
VVD, Bailly, Mendy, Cook, Wan-Bissaka
Salah, Silva, Mahrez, Mkhitaryan, Ward
Firmino, Zaha, Mitrovic.

Goalkeepers
Two great value looking goalkeepers for £9m with perfect home and away rotation and good home fixtures to start the season. If there’s doubt over the Southampton number one though I may get Foster and bring Cedric in as my £4.5m defender.

Defenders
I’ve gone with van Dijk over Robertson due to slight concern around Robertson missing the odd game around Champions League ties, if Liverpool get a tough group.

Bailly seems assured to start the season and no reason to think he won’t then keep his place. £5.5m to cover United’s defence looks too good to miss.

Mendy looks underpriced due to previous injury problems, cheaper than Walker and should be good for assists.

What I like about Cook is that he’s very bench-able as you don’t expect much from a Bournemouth defender, but he has the potential to produce when called upon and also offers perfect home and away rotation with Wan-Bissaka, who looks a no brainer for bench fodder at £4m – nice fixtures too.

Midfielders
Salah, the obvious GW1 captain, and I (hope) expect Liverpool to make a strong start before the fixtures stiffen.

Mahrez is nice and rested and Silva looks a great price for a guy seemingly nailed on before the family problems, and City’s fixtures from GW’s 2-7 make a City triple up seem entirely sensible.

Mkhitaryan could be an absolute steal at £7m. Tough opening fixtures but just can’t ignore a player of this quality at that price though.

Cardiff’s Danny Ward as £4.5m bench fodder, subject to change; he has a goal threat which is unusual at this price point, and easy to bench as you would expect Cardiff to struggle.

Forwards
Bobby Firmino up top to further tap into the Liverpool attack, with strong early fixtures and a nice price. I’d be surprised if he’s not fit to start GW1.

Zaha, the Palace talisman with pre-season form and strong early fixtures. I do worry he might move though so also got my eye on Tosun for this slot.

Mitrovic just edges out Austin for my third striker slot for now due to surety of starts, funded by trading Sane for Mahrez. Have always liked Mitrovic and should continue to thrive at Fulham now he’s the main man.

Conclusion

Thoughts? Suggestions? Where have I gone wrong, and where have I gone right? What do you suggest I change?

Cheers both. Its a 4-4-2 in reality with Kab and AWB rotating as I don’t expect CHO to play but you never know.

If you’re thinking of 442 Arnie is a waste for putting on your bench.

First glance, look solid. But if CHO does not play its like a 4-3-3. I'd downgrade Auba if not captaining him and spread the fund.

Ah see above.I take your point cheers.I always prefer starting with extreme expensive and cheap options rather than spread funds as I feel it easier to swap players. The expensive players are there to downgrade so to speak if need be.

Totally get you. But you said '..rather than spread funds as I feel it easier to swap players.'

Just imagine a scenario where a 6.5-7.5 mid, Rich/Jota/Pedro or the likes killing it in the first game, you cant get them in if the money is tied to Auba/Kun. If you can see where im going with it. There is no straight-swap, bar Mahrez and Salah which I dont think you will prepare to do.

Thing is I’m not feeling the love for any of those mid price players and of course if they do produce better than Mahrez it’s Mahrez to Richarlison etc.
More than happy to have all my funds in the first XI to start with and very cheap bench until we see where the land lies and start building squad from there.Last season I had 2x4.5 mids RLC and that Swansea mid whose name I forget and JAyew up front for 5m.Its just where I prefer to start from.

The main thing is Davies should be nailed. Good for cleansheet for a couple of games. Even if he's forced to play CB again.

Hard to split Kun/Auba. As for Cook, just need a nailed 4.5 defender really. There's 0.5 ITB to enable an early move up if needed.

      1. Jackie Moon

I disagree about PVA. He’s my 4th defender in a 433. Keep trying out taking him out for Tomkins and changing to 343, but feel he’s gonna outscore Pedro/Jota/etc. Couple clean sheets and goals in the first 6 is a real possibility. If anything Schlupp starting on the wing might tempt me, but looks like he might not be nailed.

        1. ROLLING THE DICE
          • 7 Years

Correct, Schlupp no where near guaranteed minutes. Jota OOP in midfield would tempt me over him but for the first 6 games it's probably the safer choice Good luck!

              So wrong mate.
End of last season + keeping on playing as the CF + pellegrini + better players around him is the reason why I have Arnautovic.

From the first draft, before his first goal in preseason.

              BOU, WOL, eve, ars, liv

I think Arnie could do well in these. Form is key for strikers (which he has), I see goals for WHU this year, BOU and EVE (ARS/LIV last year too) can’t defend and WOL are a promoted team.

I was going to try I crazy 541 going huge on the back 5 but decided against. Better trying to catch the 5.0 and 5.5 gems that will do good.

I think Salah KDB and a 9.5 is a great midfield structure. My fourth is Frazer at 5.5

Great form for the 2 upfront but you will probably want 1 big hitter at some stage and Zaha might be on the move.

Yeah defence could/should be cheaper to allow more flexibility: Tomkins for PVA could work for example. Overall though I like it, it would be a good set and forget team. Just might be tough to work in transfers as structure is quite rigid.

Amazing what dropping the pricey forwards can do for your defence, but i reckon you'll be struggling just a couple of gameweeks in to shifts funds to the forwards. Any way you can upgrade one of your forwards by dropping a defender to a 4.0?

Looks good. Dont like the idea of planned transfers though as they barely ever work out. You will probably want/need to get rid of one of Luiz or Shaw by GW3.

Coleman looks expensive for an Everton defence looking very porous.

    Hey guys,

Can u please provide critical evaluation for my tentative FPL team. May be rate out of 10 ? Where's it weak ?

    Ederson (4.0)
    Robertson | Bailly | Mee (Cedric, Wan-Bissaka)
Salah | Mane | Mahrez | Richarlison (4.5 maybe Ward)
    Aguero | Arnautovic | Zaha

Hard to pick holes in it looks balanced
      8.5 -9
Cedric I would replace even with decent fixtures.

I think Tomkins, but don't think I would go Wan-B and Tomkins.
And you also have Zaha that would be 3 CP and GW2 you would have to play a few of them.
Not many other 4,5 options I like to be honest.

A few potential nostalgic picks: Alonso possibly overpriced now that he's not really OOP, Daniels transfer waiting to happen, Schurrle a long way away from his Chelsea form by all accounts. Quite like the rest though!

Small thing but watch Speroni possible third choice and with highest ownership at 4.0 he could price drop. Nearly any other 4.0 is a better choice

Don't like the rotation 3rd defender strategy.
      But can work

    3. Aussiemilan

Bail Speroni for any other 4.0 to avoid price drop.

Everyone seems to be overlooking Laca but he could flourish this year in a new system!

First time where I’m actually quite happy with my team and it feels balanced enough, so any tips would be perfect.

    Fabianski Begovic
    Bailly TAA Christensen Ake Wan-Bissaka
    Mane Eriksen D.Silva Maddison Cairney
    Aguero Firmino Mitro

Only major worries are the double Fulham and keepers

Watch for Chelsea lineups in CS, not sure Christensen will start with Luiz popular again.

I prefer Cairney over Neves personally. Neves will score a couple crackers, but that's about it. Personally don't think there's much in that price bracket.

McDonald from Fulham or Costa from Wolves may be the best value at that price

TAA, Christensen are rotation risks, Ake plays for a poor defence so defence could be improved - how about Christensen to Mee, Ake to Daniels, TAA to Robertson/VVD?

Finally happy with my side, RMT and tear it apart if need be - happy with bench fodder at this early stage as don't plan on doing any subs, W-Bissaka can cover one defensive slot also :

    Ederson
    Robertson, D. Luiz, Bailly
    Richarlison, Sanchez, Salah, Mahrez
    Morata, Mitrovic, King

    Bench - Norris, Wan-Bissaka, Peltier, Hudson-Odoi

Its a small thing, but Hudson Odoi possibly not worth it. Likely to play some minutes at start of season but I'd rather a nailed 2/3 points a week 4.5 option (like Stephens last year).

Also not too excited about the forward line, but it could work out really well.

    Alisson
    VVD Mendy Jagielka Schlupp W-B

I've got my eye on Pogba too. Mata could be a decent punt for the first 2-3 GWs. Even Pereira at 5.0 with Matic injured.

How do people tend to pick their teams when its a defender vs a forward. For example week 1 I've got Cook who plays Cardiff at home which is a likely cleansheet. However also have Arnautovic vs Liverpool at Anfield so the chances of him scoring are limited. Thoughts on what to do I'm fairly new in FPL cheers

1st (and hopefully last) RMT request of the season:-

    4-4-2
    Foster
    Mendy - TAA - Bailly - Luiz
    Richarlison - Salah - Sanchez - Sane
    Firminho - Arnie

    Subs: Ryan - AW-B - Stephens - Kamara

Sanchez to become KDB to triple up on City's great fixtures GW2 onwards.

      Wow. 9.

      Respect.

Nice team. I personally think you need to go 3-4-3 and switch a defender for a cheap striker. There won't be many clean sheets at the start of the season and you are going to need to be fluid and flexible with your cheap strikers up top.
