The 2017-18 season nostalgia picks:

A number of players made their way into my squad before the game opened, last season’s returns fresh in mind..

Andrew Robertson’s end of season form was painful to observe as a Virgil van Dijk owner. At 6.0 he is ready to take up the Marcos Alonso mantle of most desirable defensive option in my opinion.

Mo Salah. Not out of fear. For the joy of FPL points.

With Danny Rose progressing to the World Cup Semi-Finals, Ben Davies was always going to be my next defensive target. The defender served many of us well at the beginning of last season, with double-digit potential and rotation over the opening fixtures less of a concern, he’s a must for me. I am conscious that I held onto Davies too long last season – this year I have earmarked Ben Mendy as my exit strategy, as and when.

Similarly, for Sergio Aguero, an early World Cup exit promoted him to the top of my summer watchlist, the anticipation of Brazil reaching the latter stages and rendering Gabriel Jesus a late starter seemed too good to be true. Aguero was a player I brought in ‘early’ last season at the moment everybody else switched from Morata to Firmino, GW17. I held him all the way through to GW32 so am familiar with the rotational fear that accompanies waiting for a City team sheet. I don’t know if he will be a long term pick, or if I’ll shift to Aubameyang after a few weeks (one of my preferred choices before the fixtures were released), but he’s nailed into my GW1 squad for sure.

Marko Arnautovic is another player I earmarked for inclusion at the end of last season. He’s just a fun player to own.

Kenedy is the final player in this group. A player I was keen on bringing into my squad last season, but for numerous reasons, never got round to, and watched on enviously as he returned a brace two or three gameweeks later. My squad structure includes two 5.0m midfielders and despite poor opening fixtures, he’s a player I’m keen to rotate in and out of my starting XI.

The desirables:

With Manchester City’s outrageous fixture run GWs 2-7, doubling up on attack seems bordering on essential. Having opted for Sergio Aguero, I am keen to leave a third slot open for manoeuvre after one or two weeks, once the returning KDB and co. are back in the mix. Riyad Mahrez is the player I’ve chosen. He’s a player that I’ve felt inclined to ignore over the past two season’s since his well earned price hike following the title winning season. But his FPL returns for Leicester last season, 16pts more than Sane make him almost irresistible in the City lineup. De Bruyne may well end up being the long term hold (or a double up partner) but for now, Mahrez IN!

Christian Eriksen is my third premium midfielder and it is the disarray at Spurs that draws me to him. With Kane potentially making a late return to the first team post-WC, I’m expecting the goal-thirsty Denmark version of Eriksen to step up to the mark.

My final desirable is Josh King. Early drafts included Zaha in this spot, and there are one or two 6.5 forwards I wouldn’t completely rule out – Wood, Mitrovic. King’s end of season form was mildly reminiscent to that of the previous season. Early sound bites from King about being unhappy played out of position last season lead me to believe he is about to recapture something of that form.

The uncertainties:

James Tomkins was a Free-Hit player I owned for Blank-Gameweek-35 last season. A modest 6-point return betrayed his involvement on the day, Livescore kept me informed of his numerous efforts on goal – so close to being a Free Hit hero! However, with Aaron Wan-Biassaka providing the role of 4.0 budget pick, I do wonder if doubling on Palace defence is a little much…

Cedric Soares was another early pick, a player that has always flattered to deceive in FPL. I am concerned about Mark Hughes ability to muster defensive resolve in his back line, not to mention a tummy bug denting his preseason return, so this 4.5 slot is very much up for grabs.

James McArthur was a non-pick last season thanks to the kindly priced Luka Milivojevic. However his goal scoring heroics did not go unnoticed. The arrival of Kouyate (and potentially RLC) could be a concern with the midfield options available to Hodgson fairly numerous. Helder Costa, Ruben Neves and Tom Cairney are all side steps I’m considering.

The Goal keeper pair is something I’ve toyed with a little. Pre-price releases, Dubravka at 4.5 was pencilled in as a potential set and forget, but with the early fixture run, a 5.0 valuation and the arrival and modest pricing of Portugese legend Rui Patricio at Wolves, my head has been well and truly turned!

Tapping in to Sean Dyche’s backline is something that I’ve been conscious of tinkering with since the game opened. With the defensive options receiving a token 5.0m valuation across the board, I see Joe Hart (assuming he hasn’t been brought in as cover for Lindegard!) as a reasonable budget route into the Burnley backline for the short to medium term – a spell that includes a very enticing opening run of fixtures.

Conclusion

Thoughts? Suggestions? Where have I gone wrong, and where have I gone right? What do you suggest I change? Feel free to let me know in the comments!

I think Joe Hart rotates better with Patricio. Just a slight doubt on how long he'll remain #1 for. Foster has a nice start too though so nothing wrong with what you've gone for there.

I'd have Cairney over Hughes, but again, there might not be a lot in it.

    Patricio Hamer
    Mendy Robertson Tomkins Daniels AWB

Had B.Silva but downgraded him to Cairney (or Mili/Sess using the 1.5m) to upgrade Bednarek/Peltier up to Tomkins.

Do you think getting Leno / Cech in GW3 could be a good move? I know planning a transfer for a GK is usually a big no-no, but here's my thinking.

    - We don't know for 100% sure if Arsenal's keeper is Leno. There's an outside chance it could be Cech.
    - Arsenal's fixtures from GW3 are incredible.
    - Emery rotates fullbacks and seems to rate Lichtsteiner so Bellerin is off limits IMO.
    - Only 5.0m to tap into their defence.
    - Opening fixtures are horrendous anyway.

    Thoughts?

I'd avoid double Pool at the back. I assume you've got Salah too. If Mane/Firm suddenly become essential as Liverpool go goal crazy then you'll need to make a couple of changes. Once GW3 is out of the way Liverpool hit quite a tricky run as well. They'll probably win plenty of them but clean sheets may be tougher to come by!

        Kun,Auba, King

I plan to only transfer when I have 2 free.
I'm hoping that def is good enough to almost always get 2 cd's

I think Liverpool and City had the most clean sheets last year and Liverpool have improved since VVD,Robertson came in. Improved in mid too.I would like to jump on the goalscorer but it is shared around too much and may be more rotation.

Thanks! Was trying for a 3-5-2, but just couldn't come up with something I was happy with. I know it's going to be a nightmare in some game weeks seeing some of those clean sheet appear and inevitably vanish. But I'm up for trying something a little different this year.

It's decent if you're patient and keep those defenders over the season. Most likely a striker will be banging them in and you'll be downgrading your defence to get him.

I'm clearly out of the loop on something. Why all the love for Bednarek today, I've barely seen him mentioned before?

Haven't played this for about 3 seasons now and a little out of touch and trying to catch up last minute. I currently have this...

    DDG, Speroni
    Robertson, Mendy, Tomkins, Daniels, Peltier
    Salah, B.Silva, Kante, Richarlson, Stephens
    Aguero, Aubameyang, Austin

Got 0.5 to spare. Any Advice?

Speroni seems high ownership without much chance of playing, I'd be worried that he may end up dropping value as casuals drop him.

Who would be better? I doubt they'll see any picks of DDG anyway, unless he's injured

          Hamer maybe.

I've gone for Hamer. Rumours he may even oust Lossl as Hudd's #1 (although I can't see it happening personally).

Use your 0.5 to upgrade Austin to King perhaps?

Also, get rid of Kante. Amazing player but not in FPL. Look for a good 5.0 option in one of the lesser sides. There are plenty who should chip in with goals/assists. Cairney, Costa, Hughes, Ralls, Pritchard, Murphy.

Fairly template I know, apart from maybe opting for Kepa from the off, and the Boly/Kabasele (and AWB) rotation.

    Kepa (4.0)
    Robertson Mendy Boly Kabasele AWB
    Salah Mane B.Silva Richarlison (Stephens)
    Aguero Arnie King

This is for the first 3 weeks. Then a couple of changes will be made as the fixtures swing slightly for a few teams.

    Thoughts?

    DDG / Hamer
Mendy Robertson Tomkins / WanBis Peltier
Salah Sanchez Jota Rich / Gunnarsson
    Auba Arnie King

I like it. I'm not sold on Sanchez personally, but he's a good placeholder for KDB/Hazard/Eriksen/Mane.

Agreed on the Sanchez, although very hard to tell. Could lead the line til Kaku is back properly.

I like it a lot, was playing around with something very similar myself. Not keen on Sanchez, unless he's just a pick for the first 1 or 2 gameweeks. Also I feel like Tosun/Zaha are better options with Arnie's fixtures.

    How are these lot looking?

    Patricio
    Robbo, Mendy, Tomkins
    Salah (C), Bilva, Mané, Richarlison
    Kun, Arnie, King

    (Fab) (Hughes, S.Cook, Wan-B)

Anything you would change? Nervous re. Tomkins not performing and making wrong decision re. Bilva and Richarlison!

    Some wisdom appreciated!
    Cheers

Tomkins will be fine. He was in loads of my drafts (although not currently).

Same starting midfield as me, and also strikers, and also Robbo/Mendy, so we're very similar!

Foster rotates better with Fabianski. And Hart rotates better with Patricio, so it'd be one or the other for me.

    Right bench and order?

    Fabianski
    PVA, VVD, Bailly, Mendy
    Salah (C), Mane, Richarlison, BSilva
    Aguero, Arnie
    (Foster, Cedric, Stephens, Kamara)

    Thanks 🙂

Definitely the right bench order, although you'll probably want to start with Foster (home to Brighton GW1) rather than Fabianski away at Anfield!

    Think I'm ready to go?

    Ederson (Speroni)
    Robertson, Luiz, Shaw, (Cedric, Zonka)
Salah, Bernado Sliva, Mkhitaryan, (Neves, Cairney)
    Aguero, Firmino, King

I think I like a team with (i) Salah, (ii) Kun, and (iii) 1.0 left itb. While that makes me happy, it also makes me worried. lol. Could you help me out with some opinions?

    Fab / Foster
    Robbo / Mendy / TAA / Boly / Wan-B
    Salah / Eriksen / BSilva / Jota / Fraser
    Kun / Arnie / Kamara

I know (i) there are some doubts regarding TAA, (ii) doubling up on Liverpool defence could be an issue, and (iii) Kamara is pretty much useless, but (i) I'm confident TAA will play (and I can still play Boly or Wan-B), (ii) I don't plan on having another Liverpool asset anyway, so I think I'd rather keep the money.

I plan on starting a 3-5-2 with Foster (Fab); Robbo, Mendy, TAA; Salah, Eriksen, BSilva, Jota, Fraser; Kun, Arnie.

    What do you think, lads?

Starting line-up looks solid, and as long as he's fit, Fraser could be a decent little differential. Not sure I'd double up on the Reds defence myself, mainly because you could well want a couple of attackers at some point... Guess that's what we have transfers for though. Good luck.

    Hello,

Got stuck here, wich alternative would you go with? Any other suggestion, currently B is my favorite!

    a)
    DDG
    Tomkins - Robertson - Mendy
    Richarlison - Salah - Mané - Bsilva
    King - Arna - Aguero
    Hamer, AWB, Peltier, Stephens

    b)
    DDG
    PVA - Robertson - Mendy
    Richarlison - Salah - Mané - Bsilva
    Jimenez - Arna - Aguero
    Hamer, AWB, Peltier, Stephens

    c)
    DDG
    PVA - Robertson - Mendy
    Fraser - Salah - Mané - Bsilva
    Mitrovic - Arna - Aguero
    Hamer, AWB, Peltier, Stephens
