FPL Question Time – Consult our panel ahead of Gameweek 13

It’s a Scoutcast special of Question Time this week, with three familiar faces on board to help us navigate through the choppy waters of the international break.

Our panel – all of whom have finished in the top 1,000 in Fantasy Premier League – are here to answer your Fantasy-related queries ahead of Gameweek 13 and beyond, be it transfer targets, strategies or perhaps the looming festive schedule.

Who’s on the panel this week?

Joe – Scoutcast presenter/contributor and the host of the excellent series, Meet the Manager. Joe is a fine manager in his own right, boasting a best-ever overall FPL rank of 840th in 2013/14 and having six other top 10k finishes to his name.

Luke – The maverick member of the Scoutcast team but another Fantasy manager with an impressive track record, with an OR of 580th (also in 2013/14) his stand-out achievement in FPL and an amazing fourth-place finish in Sky Sports Fantasy Football his crowning glory. If you’ve got any questions on the Sky game, Luke’s your man.

Az – A popular name on Twitter and the host of another recommended podcast, FPL Blackbox. Az is a regular Scoutcaster and had his best ever FPL season in 2017/18, finishing 817th. Az also has two other top 5k finishes to his name.

      Sterling will probably match Salah anyways so not a bad move.

      If you have no Liverpool attackers it may bite you but so far City have been the most rampant team out there. Liverpool seem more concerned about clean sheets lately.

    Would you rather play a 2-5-2 with Felipe Anderson or 3-4-3 with Jiménez? Mendy to Diop will give me the opportunity to upgrade fifth mid Camarasa to Felipe Anderson – although this week is more unlikely given the fixture.

    Alternative is Mendy to 5.2 or less defender (might go cheap to get funds), and upgrade Kamara to Jiménez.

    Both alternatives will be for a -4, but likely a long term move.

    What are the most illogical things you keep seeing repeated on FPL forums? For me its anything along the lines of

    "I dont like doubling up on X defense because if they concede you lose 2 clean sheets. Its better to own just one"

                You are not being helpful then. Instead of countering his argument in aid of continuing discussion you are picking up a small part to nitpick and deviate from the discussion.

                  I am countering his argument. I’m saying that avoiding on doubling on a defence does have some logic, if expected value between two options is unpredictable, especially where they are two close options, maybe risk management says pick the least risk option.

                  You’ll have to give me some tips on FPL sometime as I didn’t realise I’d been choosing not to win all this time.

                    Your playstyle will always get you a high ranking, it will however, never get you 1st.

                      Incidentally, this is what is inherently wrong about this site. So much lamentation about maintaining high ranks without any acknowledgement that maintaining a rank is the most effective way to prevent yourself from improving. You have got to take risks and learn from the outcomes.

                    Risk in FPL is the same as managing expected value though. There is no risk of loss, just risk of not maximizing your expected value. As long as you make decisions to maximize your estimated value you are playing logically. If you make lower variance plays (like refusing to double up on a defense) that also reduce your expected value then you are making bad plays.

        Because they want to minimise risk.

        Stock market investors just want to make money. They do not want to make the mostest money of all the stock market investors.

        Its a really crappy analogy. Minimising risk in FPL means choosing not to win overall.

        If I still had a Wild Card I would get rid of both .... neither are able to play 4 games in 14 days rather than the normal 3 PL games in 14 days and the extra game against 10 man Albania would have tired them out, especially Fraser who was subbed after 73 minutes obviously fatigued at the effort 🙂

        Rotation is likely for most of our players, not just the Scottish players, but obviously Fraser and Robbo will need an extra rest on the weekend 🙂
