Salah becoming difference maker among top 10k managers

The new Fantasy Premier League template among the top 10,000 managers appears to be suffering at the hands of the previous one, especially as Mohamed Salah delivered once again on Friday night.

Recent Gameweeks have seen a shuffling of the most selected players, many who have been steadily performing since the beginning of the season.

There had been notable shifts of top 10k ownership for big hitters such as Salah and Eden Hazard, as well as expensive defenders like Marcos Alonso and Andrew Robertson.

The new template largely preferred other emerging options like Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane, Harry Kane and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

However, with Salah and Hazard hitting form and Kane and Aubameyang struggling to live up to their value, it seems like the old template is fighting its way back.

Comparing the top 10k ownership statistics of last gameweek to the current one, we find the following statistics:

PlayerGameweek 17 Top 10k OwnershipGameweek 18 Top 10k Ownership
Salah58.77%48.14%
Hazard43.19%59.07%
Sterling50.66%55.04%
Kane61.41%57.95%
Aubameyang37.11%42.89%
Sane28.52%41.74%

Numbers suggest that managers have been shipping Salah, Kane and Aubameyang and putting more faith into Manchester City assets and Hazard. As Salah punished his sellers again this week, it remains to see whether Kane and Aubameyang will follow his lead.

This back and forth shifting of assets leaves the most selected team this week looking like the following:

As the figure shows, Salah drops back to the fifth most owned midfielder despite recently scoring a hat-trick, and registering a goal and an assist against Wolves.

Hazard rises to second and Sterling settles at fourth. Meanwhile, Kane is still the most-owned forward with Aubameyang dropping to the fourth place.

The decline of managers’ faith in the new template of Kane and Aubameyang, plus the old pick of Salah, also manifests itself in the captaincy percentages this week.

Although the three of them are face relatively decent fixtures this week (Everton, Burnley and Wolves respectively), none of them is captained by more than 8% of the top 10k.

On the contrary, managers opted for Sterling (44.2%), Hazard (20.37%) and Sane (15.61%) for the armband.

These captaincy statistics ensure that, for the first time in many weeks, no player has an effective ownership of more than 100%, with Sterling the best at 99.34%.

This is good news for the game as this kind of splitting between managers is what allows for significant rank jumps, if you are correct with your captaincy choice.

If Salah was classified as a forward, would he be getting more bonus points?

More BPS, yes. But he'd be losing 1 point per goal and a lot of CS points.

With how poorly he does in the BPS, the extra 6 BPS per goal (as a forward) isn't worth losing out on the extra point and CS point for.

They do, they just realize that getting bonus points it's pretty important though, especially for a player who costs 13m and you want to captain most weeks.

        Exactly @EpicFail!!
Tonight’s match was an Excellent Example of the BPS System, imo!
        •VVD-3 (MotM, CS, & Goal)
•Allison-2 (Couple great Saves kept the CS)
        •Salah-1 (obvious reasons)
....maybe I would swap Salah + Allison; but Salah misses out on BPS cause he takes on so many dribbles, pass-percentage, and Shots off Target.

Just because sterling and hazard are better than him in PPG does not mean Salah at 7PPG is bad value because why not just get all 3?

You are also forgetting the security Salah offers as a captain. How do you account for that? I’d be xo Fife this that a regular Salah captainer has done better than people regularly backing players like Kane.

I captain him a lot and he’s been brilliant......

Captained him 8 times, only one blank from him, Had a hat trick and all sort of double figure hauls from him.

I just can’t imagine not owning him 😆

All time highest ever scoring player in history of FPL only last season. Really starting to find his feet and form right now too.

Salah hitting some nice form if you watch Liverpool though.

It doesn’t work that way - have you put your extra 3 mill on the bench ? Nah

Salah is expensive but he is becoming necessary - top points scorer after all and not as much as a rotation risk as City rivals, so you get extra minutes from him in comparison 🙂

Hazard is as nailed as Salah anyway. You wanted to count 1 pointers of the bench so don't ignore the points you get with 2-3M more team value. My point is that a 13.1M player who rarely gets bonus is not worth his prize tag UNLESS you captain him nearly every gw

Hi fellas, it's pretty earlie for next GW but i have some question. I would apreciate little help here, cause i have big dilemma what to do ??

2 FT and 1.9 ITB. Really dont know who to bring

    Ederson
    Robbo-Alonso-Doherty-WB
    Richa-Sterling-Hazard-FAnderson
    Kane (C)-Jimenez

    Hamer-Bednarek-Fraser-Kamara

I'm thinking to bring Pogba instead Fraser, cause he's probably certain starter under Ole, and he will play more advanced role, but then i dont know who to bench, and what else to do with second transfer ??

    Thx in ADvance. Cheers !!

Chances of winning the Cup is really minute, you have to be really consistent all games and that is the most difficult thing to do.

Seeing complaints about lack of Salah bonus, why is anyone surprised?

VVD was integral in the Liverpool defence tonight and scored a goal, so 3BPS is understandable. Alisson saved 5 shots (10BPS), kept a clean sheet (12BPS), and would have had a high pass completion. Salah, although yes he scored and assisted (27BPS), would have also been dispossessed far more than either VVD or Alisson.

Yes Salah had a good game but the bonus rules are there in black and white for everyone to see, and always have been.

Obviously yes, they could be more rewarding to players like Salah, but then it would be very hard for defenders and goalkeepers who have had a good game to be rewarded.

Got exact cash to do this for a -4 for GW19:
    Gunnarsson > Hazard
    Aubameyang > Rashford
    Kolasinac > Balbuena

Rashford and Balbuena look set to rise tonight, and there's also of course the risk any of the players I bring in get injured. Should I do it tonight, or just settle for Diop instead of Balbuena?
