Captains

Captain Sensible – Salah, Aguero and Aubameyang compete for armband

Fantasy Premier League managers are faced with a much easier captaincy decision for Gameweek 28 compared to last week.

With Manchester City and Chelsea now back in action, Arsenal’s starting XI easier to predict and Liverpool facing more favourable opposition, there are considerably more clear cut options.

As per usual, we have assessed the key candidates from the poll for their own statistical performance of late, cross-comparing how their teams and opposition have done over the same period.

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (£13.6m) has shaken off some early competition from Sergio Aguero (£11.6m) to pull away in the latest captain poll. Ahead of Watford’s visit to Anfield, the Liverpool man has garnered the support of 40% of the vote. That is hardly surprising considering Salah’s scoring record against Watford, having found the net six times in three Premier League matches. The Egyptian has also blanked at home just once since Gameweek 19.

Currently occupying second place in the poll is Manchester City striker Aguero. After running Salah close in the early hours of the vote, is now backed by just 18%. The case for the Argentinian is easy to understand after back-to-back home hat-tricks in Gameweeks 26 and 27, ahead of West Ham’s visit to the Etihad Stadium. What may be putting Fantasy managers off is his 120-minute outing for the Citizens in Sunday’s League Cup final.

A benching for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) in Gameweek 27 has certainly put the masses off the Arsenal striker for the midweek visit of Bournemouth to the Emirates Stadium. At the time of writing, he has the backing of just 15%, despite the fact that he has scored or assisted in every home match he has started against sides outside the top six since Gameweek 12.

A tenth Premier League goal of the season for Raúl Jiménez (£6.8m) at the Vitality Stadium has helped him to become the best of the rest in the Gameweek 28 captain poll. The Wolves forward has the backing of 5% ahead of a trip to Huddersfield.

Richarlison (£6.6m) makes a surprise appearance in the top five despite his recent disappointment for Fantasy managers. 2.65% of our voters believe handing the captain armband to the Everton man for a trip to Cardiff could pay dividends. That may well be influenced by the 5-1 drubbing Watford handed out at the Cardiff City Stadium on Friday evening.

Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) is another Manchester City option suffering in the captain poll as a result of the League Cup final. The England international also played 120 minutes on Sunday which could jeopardise his chances of starting against West Ham. For that reason, he is currently only seen as the best captain for Gameweek 28 by 2.38% of our voters.

He is marginally ahead of Paul Pogba (£8.8m) this week as a stricken Manchester United side prepare to travel to Crystal Palace. The Frenchman played a slightly deeper role against Liverpool, with Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) missing out, and the concern over that has been borne out in just 2.34% backing in the poll.

Alexander Lacazette (£9.5m) is still around to play a part in the captain conversation after missing Thursday night’s Europa League action through suspension and scoring against Southampton. 2.3% of our voters believe he is the best candidate ahead of Bournemouth’s trip to north London.

Leroy Sané‘s (£9.5m) lack of heavy involvement in the League Cup final makes him one of the most likely starters for Manchester City on Wednesday night, hence why he has managed to get a place in the top 10 of the poll. 1.6% are brave enough to call on him for the armband, just ahead of Harry Kane (£12.4m) who has the backing of 1.2% ahead of a trip to Chelsea and Stamford Bridge.

    DZ repost.

For those looking to prepare for the blanks with free transfers, which blank players will you be looking to keep on the bench? I'm unsure myself and as far as I can tell there are a few options.

    1. Players who you have value tied up in.

    Advantages:
    - Will mean you avoid having to pay a premium to bring the likes of Jimenez, Doherty, Rashford, Pogba etc. back into your team on FH and/or WC.
    - If you don't like the options who play in the blanks, it makes sense to prioritise players you wish to keep in the long-term.

    Disadvantages:
    - May come at a cost of not being able to have an optimal team for the blanks.
    - The players mentioned above also have tough away fixtures in GW30, whereas most teams playing in the blanks have favourable fixtures in GW30.

    2. Players who don't play in GW31 but who play or have a chance of playing in GW33.

    Advantages:
    - Puts you in a good position for GW33. This could be important as there is a three week gap between the blanks (including an international break), where injuries could occur.
    - Many of these teams (Man City, Spurs, Watford, Arsenal and Crystal Palace) have favourable fixtures in GW33.

    Disadvantages:
    - Man City and Brighton are favourites to progress in the FA Cup, meaning they are likely to blank again in GW33.
    - Watford and Crystal Palace isn't an easy game to predict, making the prospect of benching assets from either team less enticing.
    - Possible Spurs vs Brighton game in GW33 doesn't go ahead even if Brighton go out of the FA Cup.

    3. Bench your cheapest players who blank.

    Advantages:
    - Allows you to maximise your budget for your starting XI in the blanks.
    - Theoretically, transfers replacing cheap players with other cheap players have less of a ceiling than switching more expensive assets.

    Disadvantages:
    - Only Chelsea and Liverpool of the top 6 play in GW31. Meaning it shouldn't be too problematic to use one of the other methods and still assemble a team you are happy with.

    4. Bench a combination of the above options.

    Advantages:
    - Would mean less transfers and therefore no hits.
    - The absence of key fantasy assets may make the point scorers in the blanks harder to predict. Meaning it makes sense to prioritise team value and only use transfers to bring in players who you would be considering anyway.

    Disadvantages:
    - Unlikely to be able to field XI for the blanks. Which could be a problem if it turns out to be a high scoring week.

This post ended up being a lot longer than I expected, so apologies for that. Nevertheless, I hope you find it useful and I'm interested to hear your thoughts on who you'll be benching in gameweek 31 🙂

Auba for me. Bournemouth are shaky at the back and Salah isn’t in the best of form, plus it’s highly unlikely Firmino’s absence will benefit him much. Can see a 1-0 or 2-0.

That could be tasty if Kane starts firing. Risky to go without Salah though, guess it depends if you're chasing.

Not in any mLs and ranked in the top 2k. Enjoy taking risks.

Salah's fixtures aren't that easy anyway. watford and burnley are not easy teams to play against, even for the top 6. Everton is not terrible either.

I'd do it if I knew Sterling would start but since he played 120 minutes I'm unsure

    Patricio
    Robertson Trippier Doherty Luiz
    Salah Son Pogba Hojberg
    Rashford* Jiminez

    Fabianski Firmino* Anderson AWB*

    2FT, £2.1m in the bank

Looking to transfer out Rashford and Firmino, and looking to FH32, and currently have 6 players with fixtures in GW31. Combined budget of £18.7m for two forwards, who do you think are the best candidates?

    A) Augero, 11.6
    B) Aubameyang, 11.1
    C) Kane, 12.4
    D) Vardy, 8.8
    E) Rondon, 5.8
    F) Barnes, 5.6

Currently I'm thinking of prioritising those with GW31 fixtures and going with Vardy and one of Rondon/Barnes

I chose Jiminez and Barnes in the end. Still have all chips available and think Jiminez is better short term than Rondon.

As for Firmino. My decision to not take him out for Aguero (exact cash) in the dgw ruined my season. Didn't waste a thought about keeping just now.

See buying price. See current price. If even and dropping you lose 0.1m if odd and dropping you don't. It's basic maths

My team value is 108.8. Should I sell Rash, AWB to save losing 0.2 ? 😎

Understand all the Barnes love, but isn't Rondon the better option going forward? Almiron looked to give Newcaslte a spark going forward + tasty fixtures

How's GW28 team looking folks? GTG? Bench order correct?

    Etheridge
    Pereira/Doherty/TAA
    Almiron/Pogba/Salah(c)/Jota
    Aguero/Rondon/Jiminez

    Subs-Hamer/Son/Duffy/Cook

    Thanks in advance 🙂

Not a fan of benching Son, Chelsea Spurs usually has goals in it

Maybe bench Almiron or Rondon, too much Newcastle attack in a potentially low scoring game

Don't like seeing Son on the bench.

Laca being suspended for Europa is a slight concern for Auba's minutes in the league? They can't afford to lose Auba for the Rennes games
