Salah’s FPL appeal boosted by early AFCON exit for Egypt

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) made a much earlier-than-anticipated exit from the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday evening after Egypt were defeated 1-0 by South Africa.

The shock result means that Salah and his country have bowed out of the tournament over two weeks before it is due to finish.

Bafana Bafana’s victory could have repercussions in Fantasy Premier League, with Salah’s summer international obligations coming to an end before those of teammates Sadio Mane (£11.5m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m).

With the Africa Cup of Nations final taking place exactly three weeks before Gameweek 1 kicks off, we had previously expressed concern that Salah and/or Mane could be doubts for the 2019/20 curtain-raiser between Liverpool and Norwich City in August.

Last year, Dejan Lovren (£5.5m) and Jordan Henderson (£5.5m) were handed three weeks off after their exertions with Croatia and England at the World Cup.

Klopp is, indeed, expected to give Firmino and Alisson (£6.0m) the same amount of time to recover after their run to the final in the Copa America.

Salah’s premature departure from the Africa Cup of Nations, however, has effectively killed any concern that he won’t be ready for Gameweek 1 – barring any further injuries, of course.

Egypt 0-1 South Africa

Saturday’s result was an unanticipated outcome: Egypt were not only the host nation of the competition but also the pre-tournament favourites with the bookmakers and made it to the final in 2017.

Egypt went into the weekend with a 100% record in this year’s tournament, while South Africa had lost two of their three group matches and only qualified for the knockout stages as one of the best third-place teams.

Salah had been a doubt for this last-16 tie with a cold but recovered to line up, as he so often does, on the right flank.

The Liverpool winger looked below-par and didn’t have much influence on proceedings, however, with South Africa full-back Sifiso Hlanti proving more than a match for the premium FPL midfielder.

Salah started brightly and fizzed an early effort wide via a deflection but struggled to make an impression beyond that, save for one superb pass through to Mahmoud Trezeguet that the Egypt attacker should have converted.

Trezeguet had missed another chance that Salah had teed up earlier in the game, while the Liverpool man himself had two other blocked shots and drilled wide from a long-range free-kick.

Ahmed El Mohamady (£4.5m) and Mohamed Elneny (£4.5m) both started the game for Egypt, with the Aston Villa right-back completing the game and Elneny substituted with seven minutes to go.

Both of those two players will also now return to their respective Premier League clubs.

For what it’s worth, Percy Tau had an excellent match – the Brighton and Hove Albion attacker has not been able to get a work permit since his move to the Amex but a strong showing from South Africa this summer could change all that.

Uganda 0-1 Senegal

While Salah’s Africa Cup of Nations has come to an end, Mane and Senegal have progressed to the tournament quarter-finals after edging past Uganda on Friday.

It will be interesting to see just how far Mane goes with the Lions of Teranga, given the concerns we outlined above about Liverpool assets being handed three-week breaks following their international efforts this summer.

Senegal next face Benin on Wednesday, with their opponents being one of the lowest-ranked teams left in the competition.

Mane’s nation, meanwhile, are now as short as 8/5 with some bookmakers to win the tournament following Egypt’s exit.

The former Southampton winger was again in the thick of the action, scoring his side’s winner after 15 minutes before missing from the spot for the second time in this tournament.

Mane broke the deadlock when racing through to finish M’Baye Niang’s pass but, having missed from 12 yards against Kenya last week, then saw a second-half spot-kick saved after he himself was felled by opposition goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

Mane and Senegal can occasionally look dangerous going forward but this was a match low on goalscoring opportunities, with Senegal having just five shots in total.

The premium FPL midfielder was again deployed on the left wing and lasted the whole 90 minutes.

Budget midfield pair Cheikhou Kouyate and Idrissa Gana Gueye (both £5.0m) also played the full game.

Morocco 1-1 Benin (1-4 Penalties)
Nigeria 3-2 Cameroon

Wolves’ Romain Saiss (£4.5m) played the full 120 minutes as Morocco bowed out of the Africa Cup of Nations after a penalty shootout defeat on Friday.

Saiss impressed in defence as Morocco bossed the possession and chances but his country were unable to break down a stubborn Benin side who triumphed on penalties after playing the last 25 minutes of extra-time with only ten men.

Alex Iwobi (£6.0m) was on the scoresheet in the other round-of-16 tie to take place on Sunday as Nigeria edged past defending champions Cameroon in a five-goal thriller.

The lively Arsenal winger scored the game’s winner on 66 minutes, charging through to finish low past Andre Onana after being slipped through by Odion Ighalo.

Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m) played the whole 90 minutes in midfield while Brighton’s Leon Balogun (£4.5m) replaced Iwobi in stoppage time.

We’ll bring you up to speed on the other Africa Cup of Nations games and the finals of the Copa America and Gold Cup in the coming days, as well as revealing the latest on Alexis Sanchez‘s (£7.0m) injury after the Manchester United winger was substituted in his country’s 2-1 defeat to Argentina on Saturday.

Just made a draft with no city players, with the aim of bringing them in GW 3/4.

Very risky, but feels strangely right....

        Probably.

Currently have both Mane and Salah so Sterling could come in for one of those two.

I’m doing something similar, I have a gut feeling about WHU getting a result against them, and then a tough game against Spurs. I don’t feel right having City players, not sure why.

Currently have Moura, don't understand the whole "don't plan for transfers" well that's kinda the game, otherwise you may as well just pick an XI you think will run the entire season. XFers are part of the game..

Don't plan as in, I'm going to transfer out player X for player Y in GW 2, and Player A for player B in GW3.

Injuries, suspensions, change in positioning or set piece/pen duties can drastically change what you had planned to do.

It's Moura GW1 to Anderson until necessary now

Why would Kun and Jesus get back at different times?

This was my main dilemma and I've gone with Aguero for team flexibility.

Realising that I can only fit two 11m+ players into my team I've decided to go with Aguero and Salah because then I'm just one transfer away from jumping onto any premium striker/forward. If I went with Sterling instead of Aguero then I'd need to spend two transfers if I want to bring in someone like Kane.

Worst case scenario I lose a big name from the team (first four from defence, first two from midfield or first two from forwards) I like my chances. If not Moura stays, if I do get what I want I get Anderson against bha, wat, NOR, avl, if Anderson gets injured I can still go from Moura to any other sub 7.5 player.

Cheers Fish, I'm pretty happy with Pickford purely because of his fixtures and he finished 8 and 15 points behind Ederson and Allison with 6 and 7 less clean sheets (24 & 28 points respectively) I quite like that when he's 0.5M less (more or less a set and forget when you look at it like that I think)

    TAA Robertson Laporte Digne (BLANK)

    Salah Sterling Siggy (BLANK) Dendoncker

    King (BLANK) Nketiah

    A: 4.0 defender + Ayoze Perez + Deulofeu (442)

Easily A. Although I'm not a fan of Deulofeu. Both he and Jota would have gotten significantly less points had they been classified as forwards last season. I think Wood or even Che Adams possibly are better choices.

Depends on the individuals. Jota and Deulofeu are alright; in midfield there's Perez who is pretty much an OOP striker.

When I look at city's fixtures there are some "obvious clean sheets" in long term
And also when I look at Digne and Trippier(whoever is spurs' RB for this season) it's "high cs chance + potential attacking return"
Add 2 liverpool defenders to them
It's hard to pick right defenders

First post, so go easy ;o)

    Allison | {Button}
    VvD | Digne | Lascelles | Aarons | {Kelly}
    Salah | Sterling | Perez | Zaha | {Dendoncker}
    King | Kane | {Greenwood}

Covering 2 Pool DEF in the cheapest way possible ;o)

Zaha is the one I'm least set on, pre-season might indicate if there's better options at this price or lower (to put into DEF)...

Any suggestions for a 4.5 DEF in place of Lascelles?

I was about to say 3 man back lines are a thing of the past but your team isn't even hitting 3ATB 😛
If you'd like, Diop/Balbuena with Boly rotating means you miss last seasons top 6 for the whole season and you don't have to break the bank, but I would three solid defenders with the Diop/Balbuena and Boly combo.

Salah to Mane = Lascelles to Christiansen leaving you 0.5M short of the Diop/Boly combo (I think). Whereas Sterling > KDB would fund it with left over monies (Perez > Anderson)
          Kelly > Boly -1M
          Aarons > Diop/Balbuena =
          Lascelles > Christensen -0.5M
          Perez > Anderson -0.5M

          0.5 ITB

I can't buy into the Sterling to KdB move until after the season has bedded in, a little too much of a punt...

Downgrade of Zaha to a £6 or £6.5 and Digne -> Coleman would give me £1m to upgrade Lascelles to a £5.5m... Christiansen on my radar, along with Stones / Zinchenko and Macguire if he ends up elsewhere...

Quite like this, a bit different! I'd lose Maddison to 4.5/5 and upgrade a defender. Otherwise easy to hold this time until week before

Zinchenko is only worry. Plus I would have a 4.0 keeper behind whichever of the Burnley pair claims the no 1 spot

They’re solid against top teams. Maddison spot up for grabs

Very true, considering madders, Tielemans or Perez myself after I see which one to get. Maybe it’s Vardy but at 9 with Kane it’s tricky

It would’ve Vardy, kante or Fraser, King to open with for me

Providing that both DCL and Ayoze Perez wilk be starters for their respective clubs I'm quite happy to go into first few game weeks with below team, should be fairly easy to adjust in case some explosive players emerge.

    Heaton
    Coleman VVD TAA
    Salah Sterling A.Perez Jorginho
    King Kane DCL

    Norris Dendoncker El Mohamady Reid.

As an Everton fan, and as steady as DCL is....I'd be gutted if he was our first choice striker come kick off

He's currently in my team, he didn't finish the season badly. Unless you sign anyone he's a good shout imo.

I'm a Leicester lad born and bred, so may be a little biased (!), but they're not a club that spends £30m on a bench player, so I think he'll be in the team from the get-go... I suspect they're planning on a couple of departures before the window closes (Maddy / Maguire), although I hope they both stay! Just need to get the Tielmanns signing over the line ;o)

DCL, that'll also depends on signings...

      Very similar to mine

      Heaton
      TAA VVD Digne Zinchenko
      Salah Sterling Perez Jorginho
      Kane King

I think you're better downgrading DCL to fodder and going with a 4th defender

Probably too much Leicester but this feels quite solid:

    Heaton 4.0
    TAA VVD digne O’Connell/Kelly (rotating)
    Salah sterling siggy Perez 4.5
    Vardy King 4.5

I'd expect it to be confirmed in the next few days, he's agreed terms just up to the clubs to finalise the fee, he's planning on going to the LCFC pre-season training camp starting tomorrow...

I keep trying to tweak, but I can't find a way to improve the balance & coverage. Thoughts?

    Pickford
    TAA Robbo Laporte Smith
    Salah KdB Siggy
    Vardy Giroud King

    Dendonker Stephens Kelly

The closest choice is something like this, and it's to get Sterling in

    Pickfors Laporte KdB Giroud
    or
    Ryan Trippier Sterling (6.5)

    Rate my starting XI

    Alisson
    Arnold, Bissaka, Duffy
Salah, Gündogan, Sigurdsson, Milivojevic (VAR=more penalties, more penalties - more Milivojevic returns)
    Kane, Wilson, Jimenez

Lol someone has to be around to win those penalties or get in the box. Zaha aint going to be around to do that so...

VAR does NOT equal more penalities. Lemme find the article proving it (Other leagues already been using VAR).
