Premium defenders appeal ahead of new Sky Sports Fantasy Football season

Fantasy managers looking to make the most of premium defenders might enjoy playing Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season.

Premium options at the back came to the fore in the 2017/18 instalment of the popular Fantasy game and there is every chance they could prove to be key assets this time around.

There were five defenders among Sky Sports Fantasy‘s top 10 point-scorers last season, a new record and more than any other position.

With Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola bringing possession football and hugely attacking full-backs to the Premier League, Andrew Robertson (12 assists) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (11 assists) impressed in 2018/19.

However, it was their Dutch colleague Virgil van Dijk who stole the headlines, finishing both as the top-scoring defender in Sky Sports Fantasy Football last season and the highest scorer in any position.

His 299 points, averaging 7.9 per match were recorded as van Dijk won the Champions League, PFA Player of the Year and helped his national side to reach the UEFA Nations League final.

His statistics in Sky Sports Fantasy Football led to him offering an excellent captain option most weeks too, which is why he is expected to be popular again in 2019/20.

Van Dijk kept a total of 20 clean sheets and scored four goals while also performing well for bonus points. He hit tier-one and tier-two passing bonus points on a combined total of 27 occasions.

Fantasy Football Scout Members can access the passing bonus statistics for Sky in the Members Area.

Ahead of the new season, they can also analyse which players look best for tackle bonus as well.

Aymeric Laporte, who came second overall, managed to do hit bonus an impressive 28 times, with 25 of those coming from tier two (70 or more passes in a single game).

That contributed an additional 75 points to his overall tally of 269 in 2018/19. The Frenchman scored 30.57 points-per-million (£8.8m last year), more than any other player, proving a valuable and pivotal pick for Sky Sports Fantasy Football bosses.

As you can see, Manchester City and Liverpool’s exciting title challenge last year heralded a new era in Sky Sports Fantasy Football, with the focus shifting more towards defenders.

Cesar Azpilicueta was the only defender to rank inside the top 10 points scorers in 2016/17, finishing in ninth position.

In fact, the Spanish international was the first defender in the history of the game to achieve this feat and he has since repeated it in both of the two most recent seasons.

From 2016 to 2019, Azpilicueta has amassed an impressive total of 669 points highlighting the point-pulling power that centre-backs or full-backs (he has played in both positions) now possess.

In 2017/18, just four points separated Nicolas Otamendi (244) and Cesar Azpilicueta (240) as they took up the fourth and fifth positions respectively. Otamendi registered 14 clean sheets and found the back of the net four times, while Azpilicueta capped 15 clean sheets with two goals and assists. Both players earned valuable Sky Sports Fantasy Football points from unlikely and underestimated positions.

With the emphasis more than ever on defenders, there is enough value in each player to be convinced that they are worth researching as much as the attacking stars.

Their point-scoring has increased year-on-year; who knows what the top five or 10 players in Sky Sports Fantasy Football will look like in 12 months’ time?

    Alisson
    VvD Coleman Zinchenko Diop x
    Salah KdB Sigurdsson Zaha x
    Jimenez Wilson

    Jimenez/Diop will rotate.
Do I get another rotation pair?

    So,
    Perez/Taylor OR Laporte/Fodder?

Not a good team I'm afraid. Just the one premium player and then a bunch of defenders that aren't even the best choices from their respective teams. Where did the money go?

Kind of agree, but wouldn't really want to play him again teams with good defensive record. You don't expect him to score in every game, do you?

      You have money left over?
      Would rotate Jimenez.
Also consider downgrading Alisson, and improving on Diop (hopefully for a Liverpool defender).

        Diop : Norwich (H), Villa (A), Palace (H)
        Might just play Diop.

Pope has a minor groin injury.

If you go Pope you might need to raise another 0.5m for a backup keeper.

Looks like Heaton to Villa is going ahead which means:
    a. Villa have got a great keeper and that should make their defensive assets definitely worth a look
    b. Pope should be Burnley's no1. However I'd be very surprised if he starts the season given he's currently injured and Dyche's conservative nature about bringing players back from injury. Should be back by the time Burnley's fixtures pick up so probably a good early wildcard pick.

Going Heaton + Pope and will downgrade one to 4.0 after a few weeks when everything settles.. With Heaton, Pope, Henderson, gunn and Ryan at 4.5 we finally have enough options at 4.5 to make going for one a safe bet.

The new front three for Saints of Che Adams, Ings and Redmond will cause defences real trouble this season. I’ve watched a few pee season games and they look really sharp and are playing the high press game we used to use back in the days of Poch and Koeman.

Saw this earlier, which spooked me a little: https://mobile.twitter.com/foomnianalytics/status/1156167834445254656

Someone’s FPL algorithm spotted that Wilson performed badly last season when Gosling didn’t play and Gosling is now injured. I don’t think anyone would suggest Gosling is a key creative partner for Wilson so I guess the theory is that Gosling makes Bournemouth as a whole tick.

Doesn’t take much digging to see that in the 13 games Gosling didn’t play, Bournemouth faced: City, Pool, Wolves, Spurs (x2) and Utd.

They did fine against the other teams while Gosling was out. So I’m not worried anymore.

Too expensive to justify the many risk factors for me:

      - New to Premier League
      - Emery’s attacking rotate-a-thon
      - Prior stats boosted by pens

Filed firmly under Wait and See as far as I’m concerned.

Ward if Palace don't sign a right back is worth considering. Nothing likely in attacking returns but a solid defence for a mid table side.

How am I looking good people?
I feel it's fairly template but template's template for a reason.

    Pope
    Kelly Walker Digne TAA
    Salah Sterling Perez KDB
    Wilson King

    Button Diop Dendoncker Greenwood

Not a fan of planning future transfers but either KDB becomes Son gw3 or gw3 Wildcard

Theee way rotation of Kelly Donkey and Diop is one way to get the team you want I suppose 🙂

Seriously it's a bit risky but looks good and so t panic into a WC in GW3
You don't have to go KDB to Son immediately something like Wilson downgrade and upgrade Kelly in GW3 would be fine .

Plan is to rotate just Kelly and Diop, Donkey permaBench.
Transfers and WC really only depend on how things pan out..

Big fan of this team and the structure KDB offers should you wish to go to Son or any mid priced / premium player who gets in form

Perhaps you can mix it up with going for another striker alongside Wilson

If your penny pinching, Digne to Coleman (and even Walker to Stones.) to get a better rotation pair or a 5.5 defender from spurs, Utd or chels

I see this a lot, having KDB as a place holder. I've always felt he is a long-term pick like Eriksen, Siggy etc

You hit the nail on the head there..although I think Son is just simply a must have. I feel he's improving year by year and will soon hit World Class status. could it be this year?

Digne has been in the team since the game's release and I don't see that changing. Passes the eye test with flying colors with the stats to match and set pieces in his back pocket.. I believe he is underpriced (same goes for Pereira whom I'd have had LEI had better fixtures.
Though will consider and probably end up chopping and changing a bit... Thanks for taking the time.. Cheers

Too early for differential talk perhaps but can anyone justify 33% more people favouring AWB over Shaw.

One has a record of attacking returns and the other doesn't. One has a record of baps when playing for a side with a completely different approach where high tackle counts were likely.

    1. Limbo

Because it's Shaw. Massively frustrating and AWB is younger, pacier and has something to prove. Also given his efforts in pre-season he looks very sharp.

AWB has looked good going forwards in pre-season, assisting a goal the other day. The reason he didn't get forwards at Palace was because they have PvA bombing down the other flank, and a predominantly wide player in Townsend in front of him. He provided balance by being more reserved.

AWB will make a ton of tackles wherever he plays, he's an absolute monster. There's a reason why his new teammates have nicknamed him "The Spider".

I don't have him currently because Zinchenko just looks unreal value while Mendy is out, but AWB is one I'm nervous about not owning.

      1. pingissimus

Not sure the ton of tackles thing applies. Hell make good tackles but it's the quantity not the quality I'm doubting - that's where baps happen. United would have to be very back foot for him to get in the same number.

Re Palace. PvA benefitted from playing behind Zaha - it wasn't that AWB was hindered by an attacker in front of him. In United terms it's a question for me whether there is any attacking preference for the left or right. No idea.

Yes AWB could be a viable attacking option he was a winger. But right now he's an unknown in that respect. His final ball at Palace was fairly average but he had less to aim for.

And one more point re baps. There'll be more competition for them at United than at Palace in all likelihood. Palace attack didn't exactly sweep them up.

Inverse could be true... FPL loves giving baps to attacking defenders. If a defender gets points they often get baps. Look at TAA/Robertson.

True but then Shaw is the one with confirmed attacking defender credentials surely.

Coming back to me initial point, It's the divergence in their ownership I find baffling.Preference for AW given transfer publicity and awareness seems rational but 35% to 2% seems really odd.

Nice differential at 2% but I'll be avoiding MU assets early on anyway.

    Thoughts on this please

    Fab

    Robbo TAA Laporte Azpi

    Salah KDB Rich Fraser Pereyra

    Wilson

    Woodman Greenwood Lundstram Wickham

    Son will come in GW3
Possibly for Fraser and 6.0 forward for Wilson

Or both BOU attackers and Rich go for Son Perez Haller and a hit.

    Ashley Preece @PreeceObserver

Reports confirming deal finally struck for Tom Heaton. Solid, experienced & immaculate GK who'll reassure back four. Has the air of the Brad Friedel deal about it - yet Heaton, 33, will be four years his junior! Heaton really keen on Villa move. Astute business.

    My 2 cents

Avoid Burnley until Pope is fit. Additionally, Southampton assets could cause an early stir, particularly of Pool's defensive frailties continue (only pre-season I know!). Decent value and plenty of choice... Redmond anyone?

Henderson is the new up and coming kid on the block. Full of confidence with an excellent defence ahead of him that's about to have an extra body if Lundstram continually plays. Assuming Pope's not fit, I'd have him **just** ahead of Heaton's good fix BUT then have a Villa FB (or WHM FB) ahead of an injured O'Connell, but avoid a difficult opening by playing Kelly for GW1.

The only other 4.5 I'm looking at is Kiko or Cathcart.

Rotating? Very tempted in having two as I think Heaton, Pope and Henderson all have tons of potential, but considering the wider context of the game, I'm selecting just the one.

Burnley fixtures aren't great - Pope will emerge as THE budget option no doubt, once back from injury around Gw5 (after Liverpool) Brighton with the Ryan/Button combo is hard to overlook.

Redmond is a frustrating asset and is a tiny bit overpriced IMO.

Watchlist for Henderson and Sheffield. All the promoted teams in fact. Heaton at Villa makes them a better bet IMO.

Kiko would be a better signing than Cathcart but isn't as nailed, so out of the £4.5m he gets my vote.

I'm inclined to agree with all this.

I’m currently on Fabianski for my gk, avoids the slight unknown of the promoted teams and the pope injury situation. He has great fixtures. Just wondered if he is being over looked?

Doos just made a great point that apparently a lot of his value last time came from baps as opposed to save points. If WH attack fires this time he may not clean up there in the same way again. Rethinking slightly.
