Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 12?

The captaincy debate for Gameweek 12 of Fantasy Premier League is all about one man: Mohamed Salah (£12.3m).

He may have scored 22nd Champions League goal for Liverpool midweek, making him the club’s all-time leading goalscorer in the competition, but another 90-minute outing has his owners worried about a benching at Fulham.

Nevertheless, he remains the favourite for the Gameweek 12 armband and, as per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to test the best candidates against recent data.

Even though this could prove one of the most one-sided captaincy decisions in recent FPL history, there is still plenty to sink our teeth into, comparing the underlying numbers of form players against the defensive displays of their upcoming opponents.

As this uses extensive data from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area, only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Unsurprisingly, the aforementioned Egyptian midfielder has dominated the Gameweek 12 captaincy poll, securing the biggest majority any Fantasy asset has managed on the site so far this season.

Since making a full recovery from coronavirus (COVID-19), Salah has put up 20 FPL points in two matches, seemingly having regained form and confidence much sooner than some may have expected.

However, what is surprising is the lack of similar interest in Sadio Mané (£12.0m), who does not even make the top-five captaincy picks according to our voters.

That’s in spite of the Senegalese international getting (nearly) full rest in the Champions League and, therefore, more likely to start the next two league fixtures than Salah.

The same goes for Diogo Jota (£7.0m), whose Gameweek 11 benching also makes him more likely to feature heavily than Salah, who remains the people’s choice, regardless of his full Champions League appearance on Wednesday.

Outside of Salah, not a single Fantasy asset has been backed by more than 6.5% of voters ahead of Gameweek 12, his majority over second-placed Harry Kane (£10.9m) standing at a whopping 44.6%.

Just 6.3% fancy the Spurs striker more than Salah, despite the fact that he has 11 more points than him this season and Crystal Palace have just one clean sheet in 2020/21.

Son Heung-min (£9.6m) is set to face the Eagles’ brittle defence this weekend too, and even the fact that he is the current leading points-scorer (100), fewer than 5% of our site readers think he is a trustworthy recipient of the Gameweek 12 armband.

Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m) and Jamie Vardy (£10.3m) join Salah and Kane in the top-five, backed by 6.2% and 5.5% respectively, the two of them preparing to take on Manchester United (away) and Brighton (home).

Interestingly, a Friday-night meeting with West Ham is enough to convince 5.3% of voters to get behind Patrick Bamford (£6.2m) as the skipper of their team.

Tricky one - I would consider that to be honest although many would advise against. Trent, Robbo and Jota is 'great' Liverpool coverage but I'd prefer Salah alone and invest elsewhere. Maybe hold tight this week and see what happens this weekend - especially as Dias is unlikely to keep a clean-sheet, Robbo is likely to keep a clean-sheet and there's of course a chance that Salah's minutes are managed against Fulham.

I’m guna get in Trent for Konsa and have robbo and James. I really think I prefer to captain KDB ir Bruno most weeks anyway. Didn’t Liverpool go on a massive clean sheet streak this time last year!

            Trent captain?

Man United fans lately believe that Bruno > KDB due to his stats since he came which are better than KDB's.

Do they? Intelligent fans will see Bruno's stats are better than KDB's since joining (I saw the graphic) but no-one can be reasonably compared with KDB in terms of quality. Bruno has been incredible for the club, though.

Best 2 Defenders for 8.3M!? would rotate with Bednarek:

    Martinez
    Chilwell, Zouma, Bednarek (X, X)
    Salah, KDB, Fernandes, Son, Grealish
    DCL, Bamford (Brewster)

    A) Targett/Ayling & 3.8 (fodder)
    B) Balbuena/Alioski & 3.9 (Williams)
    C) Lewis & Mitchell
    D) Kilman & Mitchell (current)

    Thinking Alioski & Neco Williams?

    Cheers!

Not D - you've got potential 2 non players there, that's a problem at any time, particulalrly over Christmas
Trent is back so i don;t see Williams getting much game time and he takes up the third liverpool slot which you may want to use given their fixtures.

      I'd go with A.

    Wilfried Zaha

    Hi All,

FPL Froggies (French-speaking Podcast - link in profile) are back this week and is happy to translate its French corner podcast section dedicated to a French or a french-speaking FPL player.
This week we have dedicated to focus on Wilfried Zaha (7.4) who have over the years fallen into the trolling category among FPL Managers. But is this about to change this year for Zaha?

Zaha was born in Abidjan in Ivory Coast but moved to London when he was 4 and joined the Crystal Palace FC youth training program at the age of 10 and soon draws the attention of the bigger PL clubs. He’s voted best youth player of the PL in 2012 and is sold to MUFC for 18M in 2013 and is immediately loaned back to Crystal Palace and then Cardiff City before eventually re-joining Crystal Palace back.

As a lot of FPL manager have acknowledged, although showing great glimpses of talent, Zaha has struggled to take his game to a next level. He did show over the years that he had a great potential and had several great streaks of games but his lack of consistency inexorably made him fall into the FPL troll category.

    Until now.
We’re 11 games into the season and Zaha (who has been sidelined due to COVID for 2 games) returned points on 6 of his 9 appearances including 3 double digit hauls.

    So, what has changed?

    - Crystal Palace which mostly used to play in a 4-2-3-1 system over the past years have moved this year to a 4-4-2 with Zaha occupying one of the upfront spot. From the man himself words, this has changed his approach of the game, his confidence and he is backing himself more to take shots.
And this is underlined by the statistics. So far, Zaha takes an average of 2.7 shots per game compared to 1.6 in 2019/2020 and 2.1 in 2018/2019.
His xGI 5expected Goal Involvement, thanks to FFScout membership data) is 6.38 which ranks him as the fourth MID behind Salah, Bruno and KDB).
Although missing two game, Zaha has had more goal attempts than Vardy, Calum Wilson, Watkins, Firmino, Son and Sterling to name a few.

    - Although it came in a dramatic fashion as Ayew missed a penalty against MUFC only to see it being retaken by Zaha because DDG had moved over his line but it looks like Zaha might be on pens for CRY. Might. Because two things have to be taken into consideration here: first, it was Roy Hodgson’s call during the MUFC game to ask Zaha to retake the missed penalty as the manager does not feel like the player who had missed is in good condition to do so. Second, Milivojevic who has been CRY first penalty taker over the years (which great records 18 scored out of 20 taken) was not on the pitch at that time. He’s now back into the XI and it remains to be seen if Zaha still is the penalty taker.
It also has to be noted that Zaha is not the Set Piece taker as he is not on corner duties and Eze/PVA seems to be in charge of the direct free kicks.

Form aside, the reason we looked into Zaha’s profile heading into the busy X-mas schedule is also because we noticed Zaha is simply not rotated. Last year he started 37 PL games and was subbed in the 38th. He was only subbed off 1 time out of his 37th starting appearances.
Last year, from Nov 30 to Jan 1st, he played the whole 90 minutes of the 8 games CRY had to play over the period and had not been rested before. So considering he had a « covid rest » this year, we think he is one of the few nailed option over the christmas period in PL.

The question now is. Does this make him a better option than an explosive Jota who could clearly outscore him with half of his minutes? Does this make him a better option than Grealish who is also nailed and is posting great figures also?

We believe that for those who have shaped or are going to shape (using their WC) their team in a 3-5-2 system, with a dedicated 6-7.5M slot, a Grealish to Zaha move for GW16-17-18 when Villa fixtures turns ugly could be sensible.
Before bringing Grealish back in 19 especially if DGW are on the cards.

    A. Vardy to Wilson/Bam

The last three seasons Salah has had a rest in an away fixture in late November/early December before playing all the Christmas fixtures. But maybe Covid was the rest this year.

I doubt he gets rested for Palace as he will have too much time off

Is Wilson worth the extra 0.4 over Bamford?

Not really. Wilson very good next 3 but Bamford long term
I’ve got both with heavy midfield short term

Hmm to start Cresswell, Lamptey or Kilman.

I keep hearing about these Cresswell attacking returns but I seem to have jinxed him over last 5 weeks.

    A) Kane and Grealish for Bamford and Salah
    B) DCL, Son and Justin for James, Brewster and Salah (-4)

Don't get rid of Grealish he's amazing value

Should I just do Ziyech -> Grealish and stop overthinking this?

    My other options are:

    A) DCL -> Bamford/Wilson/Watkins

    B) DCL + Ziyech --> Son & Bamford/Wilson/Watkins (-4)

    C) Ziyech + Targett --> Grealish + Dier/Vestergaard/R.James (3 Chelsea defenders then) (-4)

Pick one. Have KDB, Fernandes and Kane as my premiums.

    1. Fernandes > Salah
    2. Kane + Hamez > Salah + Wilson & - 4
    3. Hamez > Bowen/Mount

    Defense:

Currently playing Mings (wol), Justin (BHA), Alioski (WHU)
    and benching Chilwell (eve).

Hoping for CS for Justin and Alioski, then a goal for Mings. Or should I stick Chilwell in there for his potential assist? Everton will surely score.

No worry for Salah's playing time this week.

He was rested in week 9 and part of week 10. He hates to be rested by Klopp.

CL few days before? Yes he played for full time, but not in full effort. This match helps him to get full fitness, not ruin his performance in PL this week.
