Which FPL players are the best bets for hitting form at the start of the season?

In our latest Premium Members article, regular Scout contributor Statto99 examines which Fantasy Premier League (FPL) assets could be quick out of the blocks in 2021/22.

ATTACKERS

Injured Jota out for the season as Mane returns to Liverpool starting XI

The criteria for making our list of attacking ‘early risers’ is this:

  • Only the first four Gameweeks considered regardless of circumstances
  • Scored two or more goals
  • Made three or more goal contributions (including ‘Fantasy’ assists)

For the opening Gameweeks of 2020/21 those criteria produced a list of 31 attacking players, the top of which looks like this:

The jet-propelled start made by Son Heung-min (£10.0m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) is now etched into FPL folklore, but not so many remember Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) outpacing Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) or Neil Maupay‘s (£6.5m) goal-a-game start for a Brighton and Hove Albion side that would soon find it desperately hard to hit the back of the net.

Jorginho (£6.0m) benefitted from the early flurry of penalties being awarded in a hyper-sensitive refereeing environment while the jury was still out on whether Patrick Bamford (£8.0m) and Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) could sustain this kind of form so soon after stepping up from the Championship.

If you’d managed to select a few of these in your starting squad, or taken a judicious hit here and there to grab them early, you were probably setting the pace in your mini-leagues, but there was a steady cast of performers just below this top group who were also putting significant points on the board:

Aston Villa and Manchester United were among the teams to miss Gameweek 1 because of commitments late into the previous, over-running season, but Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) still managed to get a couple of goals and an assist in his opening three fixtures while no fewer than three Villa players joined him in the early riser ranks as the exhilarating 7-2 home demolition of Liverpool and a pair of victories over promoted Fulham and Sheffield United generated plenty of attacking spoils to share around.

A couple of defenders also qualified under the attacking criteria with a pair of set-piece goals for Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma (£5.5m) and some rampaging forward runs by Timothy Castagne (£5.5m) bringing Leicester City early returns.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

What you can’t fail to notice is the eclectic mix of attacking early risers in 2020/21 ranging from celebrated FPL names like Sadio Mané (£12.0m) and Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) to promoted talent and unsung heroes in Callum Robinson and Pablo Fornals (£6.0m).

Overall, 31 midfielders and forwards qualified for the early riser list for last season, but what could be useful to this year’s FPL managers is knowing whether there are any patterns that emerge when you extend the scope back to earlier campaigns. If you take the most recent three seasons there are never fewer than 25 attacking early risers:

2020/212019/202018/19
Qualifying “early riser”
FPL attackers
312625

This is good news for FPL managers as it demonstrates that every season there are about four times more attacking options than are needed for an FPL squad that return significantly in the opening Gameweeks and, as we have seen, they come at a range of price points.

Even more helpfully, five ‘banker’ attackers have achieved the required standard in each of the last three seasons. The £12.0+m trio of Salah, Kane and Mané will surprise nobody by their inclusion, but few would easily guess the identity of the other two.

UNEXPECTED PARTIES

Scenario 1) Post a team missing one of TAA, Salah, Son or Bruno.
Response 1) "needs TAA / Salah / Son / Bruno"

Scenario 2) Post a team including all of TAA, Salah, Son and Bruno
    Response 2) "too unbalanced"

I think I'm sticking on this. Can't find the midfield I want any other way but with total fodder bench.

    Bachmann (Foster)
    TAA, Shaw, Amartey (Livramento, Manquillo)
Salah (C), Jota, Barnes, Bruno (VC), Greenwood
    Ings, Antonio (Obafemi)

need a much stronger bench IMO, right now it's likely none of your bench players will start. Then you have Jota and Amartey who aren't nailed on in the long term.

I'm playing only for a starting XI. Not interested in the bench tbh, as I feel that Jota is going to score big and will start, so it's more of a risk to not have him than it is to have a non-playing bench IMO.

for GW1 sure but in the long term it's been pretty much proven that you need a playing bench

I get your point and if there are any injuries immediately I'll be forced to take a hit probably, but I'm willing to risk it. My approach is that I think it'll see me through a few weeks, while I build up some free transfers that I can use to switch things up a bit. Jota can also be swapped directly for Gundo or another slightly cheaper like Raph, giving me some funds for bench improvements if necessary.

I have tried things in a more balanced way, but I keep getting the nagging feeling that I am going to regret fielding a more aggressive midfield.

Presumably Amartey is going to be in a lot less drafts now that Leicester look like signing Vestergaard...

Wouldn’t be surprised if we signed another CB before the window closes, on loan maybe, given Evans also has injury problems still. Like he Vestergaard and Soyuncu initially (Amartey will play vs Wolves).

I’ll start worrying when the deal goes through! But yep, this is one reason why I’ve switched to 3 at the back instead of 4 with amartey signing, I’ll still keep him on the bench for now

There is no way we go into the season without at least 1 new CB, I suspect we might get 2. Leicester have been after Vestergaard for a few years now and he has 1yr left on his deal. I suspect in GW2 it will be Soyuncu and Vestergaard. Kasper knows him, and used to play with Bertrand too.

No love on here for Torres at Man City - same points per minute last season as Mahrez; will most likely start up front as a striker; a favourite of Pep's. Surely a no-brainer to start.

Similarly, surprised at the lack of love for Chelsea. Mendy one of the best keepers at the end of last season. Chilwell was electric. Havertz looked like one of the best players in the league once he got settled, Ziyech could explode.

    Discuss.

It's amazing really. Page after page of the same back five of TAA - Shaw - Tsimi - White - Amartey. And if we believed this site, the only Mids in the game are Salah, Bruno, Raphina, Son, Benrhama, Jota, Greenwood, Mahrez and Gundogan.

People seem reluctant to trust their instincts and just end up following the herd.

Problem with Chelsea is the rotation as well as players like Chilwell and Mount not having a preseason. They are likely to be eased back in. Ziyech could explode but in the long term he will be prone to rotation IMO.

I know the template is the template for a reason but I can’t be the only one that finds it boring to go with it fully.... you’ve got to at least have 2/3 random, slightly educated punts in your team.

Yeah, you can’t start very very well if you pick the template, need a couple of random picks here and there as you say.

Toney’s fixtures aren’t even that good and yet he’s part of the template for example. Most people haven’t even watched him play properly.

      Like it (genuinely).

Observations, though... Brighton double-up seems a bit much with all the 4.5 defenders available. I know Toney is v popular but he's a wait and see for me. Two 4.0 defenders very hard to jump off if you make that Son upgrade and something goes wrong injury-wise.

Any thoughts on the below very welcome! Biggest Qs in my mind are who to swap in for DCL if he's not fit, and who should be in that El Ghazi (£6m) slot...

    Sanchez
    TAA - Tsimikas - Shaw
    Salah (c) - Bruno - Raph - Barnes - El Ghazi*
    Antonio - DCL*
    [Steele ¦ White - Henry - Obafemi]

    £1.5m ITB

Like so many my final decision comes down to the last mid/fwd slots

    a) Toney + 4.5mid
    b) 4.5fwd + 7.0mid (Barnes, Raph, Willock(new))

    Otherwise it’s

    Salah, Bruno, Pepe, Benrahma, x
    Ings, Antonio, x

Every time I stop and think I change my mind.

I like B. Basically comes down to unproven Toney versus an option you know for a fact can do well. Can always switch it up later but I'd play safer early on.

If you are planning on an early WC then surely you will try to maximise on the good fixtures of Liverpool, Everton, Brighton, Aston Villa, Watford, Man Utd and Brentford. So something like:

I did a team like this and it was like 2 players different from a team “not” planning for a WC.

      So I forgot about it.

Amartey is an option for Veltman if you really want a 4.0 bench player. So you bench Foster, Amartey, Bissouma and then one other every GW.

    A) Wilson, Toney, (Gilmour) 3-4-3
    B) Ings, (Obafemi), Sarr 3-5-2

B, but personally I'd go for Harrsion, Willock, Fornals or El Ghazi ahead of Sarr

    The world has gone.

Ain't it £2 a month in the UK

I don't live in the UK (thank f!)

It's not so much the cost, it's the increase.

Odd timing though. You think they'd give people a month or two to get used to having the new bits, then hike the price and hope they don't want to lose it.

    TAA, Coufal, Shaw, Tsi, White
    Salah, Bruno, Raphinha, Barnes, Gilmour
    Ings, Antonio, Toney

Tryna work out which of these pairings I prefer:

    Mahrez + Toney
    Gundogan + Ings

Any input would be much appreciated 🙂

B for me. More nailed IMO and both proven premier league assets

Think that's where I'm leaning though I'm slightly concerned that Gundo's goalscoring form last season was a one-off

Current bench boost squad, if I change anything it’s Bruno and ESR to Greenwood and Son:

    Schmeichel Sanchez
    Amartey Tsimikas Shaw Veltman Trent
    Bruno Salah Barnes ESR Benrahma
    Toney Wilson Ings

    Thoughts?

Anyone with a strong opinion on which 4.0 goalkeeper to get with Sanchez? Stelee seems like the easy option but isn't Scherpen going to be the back up goalie when fit?

After playing this game from the start, one thing I have learned the hard way:
Planning future transfers/WC almost never works out. Form/injuries/price changes wreck any forward plans. Best plan is to chose a team that you dont have any plans to change- then you can respond as required, not as planned.

Best advice is to Bench Boost pragmatically and don't fixate on the dgw's.

This is my big one for the season ahead. Took so much time to repair my team after tearing it apart for BB last season
