FPL Gameweek 18 round-up: Sunday review, injury news and the things we learned

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from Sunday’s Gameweek 18 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes throughout December.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Thiago Alcantara (£5.3m) missed this afternoon’s fixture with Tottenham Hotspur after a suspected positive Covid-19 test, with the midfielder now isolating.

In addition, Jordan Henderson (£5.1m) was also absent with illness. The England international registered a negative test for Covid, but was unavailable due to feeling unwell.

“One more positive test with Thiago, Jordan Henderson is the only one with proper symptoms but not Covid. He has a cold so we sent him home.” – Jurgen Klopp on some of his missing players

Elsewhere, Andrew Robertson (£7.1m) was sent off in Gameweek 18 and will now miss Liverpool’s next three matches. That raises the appeal of a short-term move for Kostas Tsimikas, who costs just £3.7m in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), though it is worth noting that the ban also includes domestic cup competitions. As a result, Robertson will only miss two Premier League matches, against Leeds United and Leicester City.

Chelsea revealed they had a request to postpone today’s Premier League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers rejected. The Blues were already without Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m), Timo Werner (£8.6m), Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.3m) and Ben Chilwell (£5.7m) due to positive Covid-19 tests, with further cases confirmed on Saturday and Sunday, leaving them with just six substitutes in Gameweek 18, which included two goalkeepers.

“I don’t know if it was close to not happening. We were struggling with the preparation because we had several consecutive days with positive Covid tests and then we travelled together for three hours with the team, we had dinner together we had another positive test with Jorginho.

People are worried because they were on the same bus and had the same dinner. Obviously, it was not enough to postpone the match and we had to play but you cannot demand 100% focus otherwise it would be stupid to normally focus if you can do this without being calm. It was everything else but calm.

Today in the morning at 08:30 they knock on the door and have another test nobody knew about, so do we wake players up who want to sleep a bit longer? OK.

I gave my opinion and you can do with it what you want. I can’t compare to other games, it is just our situation. It is not safe. We talk about protecting players and a safe environment but it is not safe. I would be not surprised if the next test shows up and we have more positives. How should it stop if we sit in the bus and have dinners and just stay together like nothing happened?

I don’t care so much about the next games I just care about the next tests and the health of the players. Today we let Kovacic play 30 minutes one day after 10 days of Covid. We make him play, who takes responsibility for that? We have Kante one training session, Chalobah with two training sessions and maybe another injury. It is like this. We need to keep on going if they say we need to keep going.” – Thomas Tuchel on the Covid situation

In addition to the above, Trevoh Chalobah (£4.7m) and Hakim Ziyech (£7.3m) also picked up injuries.

“Trevoh, hopefully it is just painful. At the moment, it is very painful. We still have hopes that it is not serious, but we need to wait for further examination.

For Hakim, I don’t think it’s bad. He got hit on his nerve on the calf. It was tight. He was limping and we had to take him off.” – Thomas Tuchel

Meanwhile, at St James’ Park, Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) and Rodri (£5.5m) both picked up their fourth bookings of the campaign, meaning they are now just one further caution away from a ban, while Isaac Hayden (£4.5m)  will miss the visit of Manchester United in Gameweek 19 after his fifth yellow card of 2021/22.

Eddie Howe was dealt a further blow with the news that Federico Fernandez (£4.3m) and Jamal Lewis (£4.2m) have longer-term injuries.

“I think they’re going to be longer term so we won’t expect them back for the foreseeable future. Jamal’s was a strange one early in the game against Liverpool. It was a big blow for us and Fede looks like he’ll be around the same length of time.”

Jonjo Shelvey (£5.3m) and Javier Manquillo (£3.9m) also missed Gameweek 18, with muscle tightness and illness, but not believed to be Covid, respectively.

“Manquillo was a late drop out due to illness which was a big problem for us. Jonjo has played a lot of football in a short space of time having missed a long period. We just felt we had to be careful with him for this game. We hope he’ll be back soon.”

GAMEWEEK 18 TAKEAWAYS

ALEXANDER-ARNOLD OUTSCORES SALAH AGAIN

A depleted Liverpool side, who were without their entire first-choice midfield and Virgil van Dijk (£6.7m), looked vulnerable on Sunday, as they conceded two goals and gave up 2.46 xG at Tottenham Hotspur. However, that didn’t stop Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.3m) from outscoring Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) for the seventh time in eight Gameweeks, a period which has seen him produce 74 points, compared to the Egyptians 58.

CANCELO SHINES BUT ANOTHER BLANK FOR BERNARDO

Following today’s 4-0 win at St James’ Park, it’s now eight Premier League wins in a row for Manchester City. During that period, they have scored 24 goals and conceded just three, in a run of form which sees them arrive at Christmas top of the tree.

Joao Cancelo (£6.8m) has been one of the players of the season so far, and showed why in Gameweek 18 with a whopping 18-point haul. However, it was a day to forget for Bernardo Silva owners, after he blanked for a second successive match. Pep Guardiola’s side have scored 11 goals across their last two matches, with the Portuguese midfielder managing just three points.

“I didn’t rotate today, I decide the best team, we need a different base for the players and now we have seven days until the next game. Hopefully Leicester are getting better with a lot of Covid cases so I will take a decision on the team.” – Pep Guardiola on his decision to bench Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Ilkay Gundogan in Gameweek 18

SON AND KANE BACK ON THE FPL RADAR?

The drought is over, but it could have been so much more for Harry Kane (£12.1m) on Sunday. The England captain – who’s only Premier League goal this season was two months ago at Newcastle – rifled a shot into the bottom corner to give Spurs a surprise lead over Liverpool. It was a peak-Kane finish, but there were further opportunities to add to his tally, as he ended the match with six shots in the box – including two big chances – and nine penalty box touches.

Harry Kane’s xG shot map v Liverpool in Gameweek 18

In their first game in two weeks after a Covid outbreak, there were plenty of positives for Antonio Conte to take forward, ahead of an appealing run of fixtures which could bring both of today’s goalscorers – Son Heung-min (£10.3m) and Kane – back onto the FPL radar.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Gameweek 19-22 schedule

THE IMPORTANCE OF KANTE

With N’Golo Kante (£4.9m) back in the starting XI, Chelsea produced their first clean sheet since Gameweek 12 on Sunday. In the five games the French midfielder missed, Thomas Tuchel’s side conceded eight goals, as they clearly missed the protection he offers their backline.

However, against Wolverhampton Wanderers, they restricted their opponents to just one shot in the box and 0.29 xG, though it is worth noting that they did at times ride their luck.

As a result of today’s underwhelming draw at Molineux, Chelsea are now six points behind leaders Man City, after a run of two wins in six Premier League games.

COVID LATEST – PREMIER LEAGUE CLUBS SET TO MEET ON MONDAY

After six Premier League matches were called off in Gameweek 18, Premier League clubs will meet on Monday to discuss the growing Covid crisis.

Even the clubs who were able to complete their fixtures this week have been affected by Covid, with Chelsea naming only six players on the bench at Wolves, while Liverpool were missing the likes of van Dijk, Fabinho (£5.4) and Thiago, something Jurgen Klopp touched on after today’s game:

“We play now on Wednesday, Sunday and Tuesday. That is impossible. We do not have the players. We could maybe have another case or two. We have to think about it, we cannot just push it all through.

First of all, take away the second semi-final of the Carabao Cup. Just play once, wherever you play it I don’t care. The 26th and 28th of December is really not possible. We would prefer to play but we need some help. If we carry on we cannot carry on as usual.

If we don’t play anymore and have a break I am fine. But I know the problem. When do you want to play the games? It is not that easy to fit them in. We said before Coronavirus that it was a bit busy and now it gives us a proper punch.” – Jurgen Klopp on his side’s upcoming schedule

A report on The Athletic tonight suggests that an entire round of fixtures (Gameweek 20) may be postponed, though that is of course speculation at this time.

Get a good bench to cover postponements they said*

*Warning: Side effects may include headaches, lack of sleep due to early morning deadlines, indecisiveness and leaving points on the bench.

With the exception of the missed games (not his fault) Sonny is bringing me back up the MLs having bought him in GW14 (8,13,B,B,7). No complaints here at all except well, he missed two "sitters" and should've had another assist in the first 45 vs Liverpool.

with fixtures being cancelled and our first 11 always likely to be one man down anyway, he is quite a nice option to rotate a bit with the third striker or 4th mid depending on fixtures - bit of a luxury but thinking of getting him alongside TAA, Alonso & Cancelo.

Hmm. My bench order is Watkins, Gallagher, Dennis right now.

    Trent, James, Rudiger, Cancelo
Salah (c), Jota, Son, Bowen, Bernardo
    Antonio

    Steele, Dennis, Gelhardt, Johnson

    2FT, 0.1 ITB.

    A) Johnson, Rudiger > Zinchenko & Coady/Kilman/Marcal/Ait Nouri (free)
    B) Bowen > Martinelli/Odegaard (banks 1.0 - 1.2M)
    C) Bernardo & Johnson > Martinelli & Dias (free)
    D) No changes
    E) Other recommendations?

      A) Interesting Zinchenko?
      B) Bowen out seems kneejerk to say the least.
      C) I like but Martinelli and Laca struggle to do 90 normally. Don't be so sure ESR lost his place.
      D) Certainly up until xmas day unless fate is dealt with in another way.
      E) Take a week off and see from there.

Well it seems that with Cancelo being uber flexible he can play either wing and Pep seems to have taken the stance of benching Walker (who has been rested most this season I believe - excluding injuries). We all know Zinchenko likes to get forward too and deliver a cross or two. Plus the CS.

Bowen out is a bit kneejerky but double West Ham attack, and a West Ham fan is bad for the heart in FPL, LOL!

I get what you mean, but kids on fire.

I probably will! I'll be lurking the forums!

Are the FA meeting today? Decision time:
    1) Do they play until after boxing day and then pause?
    2) Do they take the pause now?
    3) Do they have no pause?
Whatever the above, the decision could be taken out of their hands. However, fan restrictions will be inevitable and a lot of clubs cannot afford no TV revenue.
    Anyone have anything to offer?

Yes. Liverpool should be forced to stick to the schedule and to suffer the consequences of their choice to have an insufficiently deep squad.

I also hope AFCON goes ahead as planned and that CAF insist on their rights regarding the release of players.

Whether these will happen, I have no idea. 🙂

Hes fine when his team are flying. But when his team are up against it he changes his tune. There isn't a bigger whinger in the league. His behaviour was appalling yesterday throughout and after the game.

It's funny. Spurs fans thought he was abysmal and leaned to Liverpool. Liverpool the other way. The officials are awful in the league but it doesn't excuse Klopps behaviour. Or do you think it's OK to shout in someone's face and publicly tell them they're not good at their job?

I am going to be gracious here because I never watched the game. I am assuming more went wrong for you than salahs handball and I don't know about it. What I do know after watching multiple pundits commentaries was that Harry kane should have been sent off after 20 minutes and jota was clearly fouled in the box. I took to me like there were 3 big errors and 2 in favour of Tottenham both of those in the first half that had to of had an impact on klopps behaviour. Then we get to the Robertson red which seems fair enough but not as bad as kanes tackle on Robertson ironically. One of those players misses three games for a wild tackle that was not dangerous, the other carries on as normal for nearly breaking someone's leg who luckily for kane jumped which saved kane assuming the referee would have given rocks even if kane broke Robertson leg which based on his performance is dubious.

Just watched the extended highlights again to see what you are on about. Winks penalty doesn't even show up in 9 minutes of footage so I guess you would have to be a non objective spurs fan to think it was relevant. I have to assume therefore that Ali was the stringer of the 2 shouts which is embarrassing for you because the liverpool defender puts a hand on his back and he goes down like a ton of bricks, jota tries to shoot and is barged into from behind. Calling those 2 events the same is embrarrassing. What haappenned with winks then? Someone breathe too heavily near him? Come on dude. You are bring ridiculous. No more grace to you.

Late replying but Sky didn't cover it for some reason but shouldn't be surprised considering the moaning from Carragher and Redknapp. Matip went through the back of him with his knee in the air. If you search for full match highlights I'm sure you'll find it.

I watched extended highlights on YouTube. 9 mins covering all major talking points. The same highlights that help me agree with you that spurs had the better chances and shows jota and even Ali penalty shouts. The creator of the video did not include your game changing winks penalty. I wonder why. I see below you admit kane is a red yet you say the ref favored liverpool. How does letting a 10 man team at with an extra man for 70 mins get you to your opening gambit of he was leaning towards liverpool? What are you on?

Right. Fair play to this spurs writer because he tries his best to be objective and seems to say clear red for kane and robbo both go in your favour. He also seems to agree on jota pen while stating winks could also have had a pen as if to even things out except no non spurs fan is talking about this and so either it's an injustice to you guys or, and I think this is more likely, you are viewing something unclear as a clear pen and then equating that with Jota. No one else on the internet is doing this. I just listened to Jules from espn say that Emerson should get a second yellow if indeed he has prevented a goalscorer opportunity illegally, so if the pen is given as it should have been, you could have been on 9 players! I understand that there were probably 10 fifty fifty calls either side could write articles on to feel aggrieved but when neutrals jump to your defrnce in mass on 2 decisions then it's clear which team should feel aggrieved.

Yes it is, what that ref did yesterday was to change the outcome of a football match because of his decisions. He actually deserves more than that, deserves several matches without being able to ref. And the VAR the same.

Spurs had about 6 great chances to score before Liverpool scored. Spurs created the better chances regardless of the officials. So the official didn't change the out come of the match. If you want a penalty for the Jota moment it has to be a penalty for the Alli one or the Winks one. So it balanced out there. Kane could have been sent off. Robertson was 2 years overdue that red for his disgusting challenge on Tanganga anyway and to be honest it couldn't have happened to a more horrible bloke that Robertson.

Tottenham had great chances, probably the better of the 2 teams but saying the ref has not influenced the outcome is more ridiculousness from you. Liverpool are clinical that's why they win more games. This game should have been against 10 men and liverpool 3 1 up even though Tottenham played well and created great chances.thank your lucky stars for Tierney and Kavanagh. They botched this big time

Unless they implement the bubble protocol they implemented last time this happened, a break is useless. Actually more harmful as players would basically be on vacation at this time of the year attending Xmas and New Years parties and socializing. And you cannot 100% stop that.

Just checking my GW history and wondered how everyone's season is going so far? Mine has been a bit of a rollercoaster. In my second season now after a 700k finish last year.

I got off to a shocking start, mainly through not owing Fernandes for his monster haul, falling 40 points behind captainers already. Also stupidly owning a fair few new signings just bedding in eg. Sancho for his 1 pointers. Was down near the 3 million mark.

Then had green arrows in 7 of the next 9 gameweeks getting as low as 200k at one point. Thinking this is easy peasy!

Then had 5 absolute stinkers of GWs, mainly through captaining Kane over Salah for his so-called good fixtures and getting punished heavily, then getting postponements for my 3 Spurs players. Along with a stubborness to refuse to bring in key assets like TAA and James who were just killing me every week. Thinking surely these defenders can't keep this up and my strikers will start firing. Wrong. Rank shot back up to 1million.

Decided to bite the bullet, get some of the key players in and just had two green arrows in a row recovering my rank somewhat to 700k. Aiming for top 100k finish by end of season. Just wildcard used so far.

Started off OK, made ground slowly. Was 100k after GW9. Dropped to 300k by GW16, slowly moving back up just outside 200k after this GW. Problem is the template players are continuing to do well and wavering from it loses ground, it's finding that one or two good differentials to male better ground that's the problem.

2 weeks in a row not captaining Salah has paid off for me. Jumped up about 150k spots and currently sitting outside 80k. Sometimes it pays off to go against the herd and follow eye tests/instincts

Been really consistent for a change and had the best start ever. Was at my best ever rank of 22k 3 gws ago, but have just dropped off back down to 83k with 3 red arrows last 3 gws. I blame early transfers and not trusting my gut on capping TAA or Cancelo.

Had a blinding start up to 50k after 2 weeks. Since then yoyo'd around a bit doing to 250k at one point (havertz captain) and down to 27k a few weeks back. Dropped back to around 150k after a horror show of a gameweek 3 weeks ago when all the popular assets hauled except for every single one in my squad but then back to back big hauls has brought me back to 27k, mainly thanks to (c). Hoping to push on towards 10k now

Got off to a great start, made a few bad decisions for a period then got back on track, bobbing around inside the Top 10K. Thing Is, I feel I have a perfectly good squad - there's no one I really want to bring in or get rid of, but every GW I'm getting hammered by injuries and covid (same as everyone else, which is why I'm not moving up or down much).
I wish things could settle down so we can show our FPL chops, rather than rely on less bad luck that everyone else.

    Morning all

What’s your thoughts on the move Gallagher > Gray?

Looks like a great run of games for Everton, dcl potentially getting back soon (will wait for news) maybe they can turn a corner now

I have not considered any Eve players myself, I don't like that move.
