FPL

The best FPL goalkeepers for a Gameweek 28 Wildcard

With Double Gameweeks 28 and 29 on the horizon, many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers intend to use their second Wildcard chip over the coming days.

It’s a chance to aggressively attack the Double Gameweeks yet have the squad depth to survive Blank Gameweek 30, if a Free Hit can’t be used.

Below, we look at some of the better goalkeeper options for the final stretch of the season – relevant to both Wildcard activations and normal weekly free transfers.

All stats and graphics included in this piece are taken from our Premium Members Area.

Jose Sa

 1

The game’s joint-highest scoring stopper, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Jose Sa (£5.3m) has been a fantastic replacement for Rui Patricio. When Wolves went through a binary period whereby every score between Gameweeks 12 and 21 were either 1-0 or 0-0, their defence kept six clean sheets out of a possible eight.

However, just as FPL managers started to commit to their Molineux asset, this form slipped and only one clean sheet has been kept in the six matches since.

No team has conceded fewer than Wolves over the past 16 Gameweeks yet their expected goals conceded (xGC) tally is vastly higher, ranking in the worser half for both this and shots conceded. A huge reason for this overachievement has been the 56 saves from Sa, bringing in 14 save points and eight bonuses.

A promising Double Gameweek at home to both Crystal Palace and goal-shy Watford is a great way for Wolves’ back line to get back on track. Five of their next six fixtures have the best possible ‘Fixture Difficulty Rating’ score.

Aaron Ramsdale

Xhaka and Moura recalled as Ramsdale starts again

Arsenal’s number one is still popular and for good reason – the Gunners have established themselves as a strong, budget-friendly defensive side. Only Ederson (£6.1m) and Alisson (£6.0m) have kept more clean sheets than Aaron Ramsdale‘s (£5.1m) 11, with Arsenal never going more than two games without one since his Gameweek 4 debut.

Five were kept in the seven matches between Gameweeks 16 and 24 but a goal was conceded in their last two against Brentford and Wolves. Therefore, going by statistics, Arsenal are due another one at the weekend against Watford.

Beyond that, Ramsdale has a Double Gameweek 29 against Leicester City (h) and Liverpool (h), whilst they are currently one of only six teams to definitely have a Gameweek 30 outing, as both they and Aston Villa are already out of the FA Cup.

Remaining fixtures are steady, so Ramsdale offers both the safety of having Arsenal defensive coverage and the reliability of having the optimum situation over Gameweeks 29 and 30.

Son to Raphina or JWP and upgrade a defender to Trent (or Robbo is stretched for cash) and Fodder to a better keeper (Sa or Ramsdale)

Going round in circles on this one and would appreciate input:

    Ramsdale (De Gea)
    TAA/Robertson/Tierney/Cancelo (Reguilon)
    Raph/Salah/Saka (Bowen/Gray)
    Hwang/Jimi/Watkins
    1 ft, 2.1m itb

    A) De Gea -> Mendy
    B) Reg -> Saiss
    C) Gray -> JWP (or -4 or -8 with A and B)
    D) Wildcard

I think I would pay the 0.3 extra for dubravka if you still have BB left, if not just save the cash as you're likely to play other keep majority of games

    Russian clubs getting banned. WTF
Now a proposal to ban all Russian Athletes. Sheer stupidity. What next? Ban all the Russian Doctors, Engineers and teachers?

    1. diesel001
      • 7 Years
      2 years, 3 months ago

Not really that stupid. Sports teams and the success they have is a form of 'soft' power. If a Russian club wins a sports tournament, then it can be used as propaganda of Russia's might.

In addition, many Russian teams are backed by the state or those with strong connections to Putin.

      1. OverTinker
        • 5 Years

EU should fight if they so much want. But nah instead they are taking revenge from Athletes who have nothing to do with the war. Plus one can question why were American athletes never got the ban when they were on invading Iraq and so many other countries. Sports should be kept away from politics.

        1. artvandelay316
          • 3 Years
          2 years, 3 months ago

Then the athletes should seek to compete independently and not represent Russia. I am sure there is a mechanism to allow for this, or a way it could be managed.

Nothing is impossible. Sports governing bodies are changing and adapting rules, locations, events, etc already to navigate this situation.

Not the same at all. If the US and UK declared war on a civilised, Democratic country and invaded, they would be met with the same universal condemnation that Russia has. Afghanistan and Iraq are not Ukraine.

              1. OverTinker

All are equal but some are more equal right 😀
I can totally understand in case of Afghanistan but Iraq invasion was totally different based on lies.

                  • 3 Years
                  2 years, 3 months ago

Even with Iraq, there was never this level of universal condemnation in the way the world is decrying Russia's actions. This is next-level, with threats of nuclear and chemical warfare, and severe threats against any country that interferes militarily.

This doesn't justify the former military actions by the West, but they are different in their context and the global reaction.

                  1. OverTinker
                    • 5 Years

Millions lost/injured/displaced in Iraq invasion but yeah the context was different. Even though no weapons of mass destruction found later.

If you want to resort to numbers, come back to me with numbers once the appropriate amount of time has passed to draw a direct and fair comparison. Add on the fact that Russia are also deliberately targetting civilians, ambulances, etc.
All in a country that had no interest in war and posed no threat.

Also, the key here is the nuclear and chemical threat. You're conveniently ignoring that. This is a potential world-ender. A potentially extinction-level threat.

Whatever you say it doesn't imply that USA athletes should not have been banned if we apply your logic to ban Russia athletes now. It would be double standards.

Only a guess, but probably because sanctioning bodies feared U.S. “payback,” especially during the Bush/Cheney regime. Said sanctioning bodies are inherently spineless and almost certainly were biased against Iraq and Saddam Hussein to begin with.

Neither, both probably play one game, much better SGW options

Mount. Ziyech has benefitting from the back four but likely with James back they'll go back to a back five which will see Ziyech dropped

Kilman, White and Coutinho - all double in 28 or 29 and all have games in 30 (if important to you?)

or Mount for MF and downgrade one of Def (e.g. to Schar) - Mount could blank in 30

Possibly. The possibly not for the second game or the first in 29 but possibly back again for the second one in 29. Seriously who knows?

Weak points of the new Leeds coach Jesse marsch:
    1. Struggle with teams sitting deep.
    2. Few tactical formation changes toward the opposition.
    3. Open play.
    4. Weak defensively.

    Strong points:
    1. A good relation and chemistry to the players.
    2. Highly motivativ.
    3. Has a very good attitude.
    4. Very good against the teams that play open.
    5. High pressing style.

Not too much differences from Bielsa, could be a good appointment given the current situation of Leeds, not too much time left to change the philosophy of the game.

Thanks for the analysis, that's really useful since I have to admit to not knowing that much about him. I used to enjoy watching his RBL team play on the few occasions I got the chance to see their matches and your comments regarding high pressing ring true.

Cheers for this. Would this be a reason to swap Raphinha for someone like JWP/Willock or stick considering NOR in 29 and a game in 30?

Might be too early for Leicester with the other doublers like Willock/JWP but can see the appeal.
I wouldn't go Chelsea midfield personally, the don't score enough goals and next 4/5 games are all 3 days apart, you want players in these positions where you're not having to check predicted lineups each week

What changes would you like to make at this WC-team? No BB left, and thinking FH30 so looking to maximize my starting 11.

    Ramsdale - Foster
    TAA - Cancelo - Rüdiger - Coady - 3.9
    Salah - Mount - Coutinho - Kulu - Ramsey
    Kane - Broja - Jimenez

    0.4m itb

Madness going without Son, or should Kulu + Kane cover it long term?
Waiting to push the button until the most likely Chelsea DWG is confirmed.

I think Kulusevski is at risk of not starting. Sounded like only a late knock to Moura meant he started Vs Leeds. Also who you benching from that front 8? Probably Kulusevski?

      1. Runks
        • 6 Years

Yeah, thinking Kulusevski. Then doing Cou -> Saka next round, and bench Ramsey.

Conte has spoken widely positive about Kulusevski since his arrival, and also opened up the oppurtonity to play him as wing-back. Obviously playing as a wing-back wouldn't be ideal, but at least it assures his minutes.

Got Kulusevski in before the Leeds-game as a one-week punt before WC, but now I'm debating with my self if he's worth the shot..

Kulu more punty but could pay off.
I prefer Mount to Son and go with Willock/JWP
Jimenez safe but not a huge scorer

Does nobody remember when loads bought Havertz in GW9, some even made him captain, Chelsea scored 7 and he got 3 points. Seems nobody has learnt from that, biggest trap on this DGW, along with many Chelsea attacking options. Just my opinion so hold the we shall see replies

Yeah, if I buy any itll be just Rudiger, probably WC in 31 and get James. Already have Coady and Ran at the back along with TAA and Cancelo so not keen on losing them for this GW

I have to agree, with your main post and this. Not to say Mount definitely won't play or haul but Tuchel rotates so many players and Mount's finishing was quite poor yesterday. One thing I'd want from DGW players is being as sure as I can be that they'll play 2 games

          1. TopBinFC

Yeah I'm the same, potentially many of Chelsea's assets will essentially have a single GW with rotation etc, definitely not worth a hit for any of them, some people thinking of ditching Cancelo for Rudiger or James which is madness

If Chelsea double confirmed would you bring in Rudiger for Tierney for 3 games- double 28 (bur, nor) single 29 (NEW) and blank 30 or keep Tierney for 4 games - single 28 (wat) double 29 (LEI, LIV) and single 30 (avl)

A Keep Tierney and stick with WC 26 strategy and get Chelsea after 30
    B Transfer to Rudiger

How does this wildcard team look (assuming that Chelsea will have a gw28 double)? I would also be looking to play a gw29 bench boost.

    Ramsdale | Dubravka
    TAA | Cancelo | Rudiger | Coady | Livramento
    Salah | Son | Mount | Saka | Willock
    Lacazette | Adams | Broja
