How will Raphinha and Leeds’ FPL assets fare under new boss Jesse Marsch?

From murderball to ‘Mericaball: Marcelo Bielsa’s departure from Leeds United has preceded the appointment of Jesse Marsch as the club’s new manager.

The former Red Bull company man, who has spent time as the head coach of the sporting franchise’s New York, Salzburg and Leipzig teams, is tasked with keeping his new troops in the Premier League after a run that has seen the Whites take just one point from their last six matches.

More importantly for us Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, can he reinvigorate Raphinha (£6.5m) and co as FPL assets?

Ahead of Leeds’ Double Gameweek 28, we take a look at Marsch’s tactics and management style and ask what we can expect from the 48-year-old American.

THE HISTORY

After an unremarkable playing career and a stint as an assistant with the US national team, Marsch was named as the head coach of Montreal Impact in 2011.

Leading the Canadian side to a mid-place finish in their first Major League Soccer (MLS) season before departing by mutual consent, he resurfaced in the American top flight for a successful spell with New York Red Bulls. Marsch won the Supporters Shield (the annual award given to the MLS team with the best regular-season record) in his first campaign and eventually departed for Europe in 2018, enjoying a year as assistant to Ralf Rangnick at RB Leipzig.

Twice winning the league and cup double with Red Bull Salzburg in his two years in Austria, Marsch returned to Leipzig as head coach in July 2021.

He was gone five months later, with some mixed results ending in a parting of ways in December and the German outfit languishing in 11th place in the Bundesliga.

MANAGERIAL STYLE

“Evolution, not revolution” seems to be the Leeds board’s thinking behind Marsch’s appointment, which is quite apt given Bielsa’s Darwinist approach to team news.

An aggressive press and lots and lots of running were characteristics of Bielsa’s Leeds and his successor favours a similar approach, albeit with a few tweaks.

Less man-marking and more concentrated zonal coverage is one technical difference that may be greeted by a collective Partridge shrug by FPL managers but Marsch’s attitude to winning possession back high with a view to getting shots off as quickly as possible is more exciting-sounding.

“Sprinting, sprinting together, 100%. And when you win the ball, not thinking about possession but how quickly you can score a goal” – Jesse Marsch, speaking to the Coaches’ Voice in February 2021

“If you watch Marcelo Bielsa with Leeds, he is a big believer of against the ball but he does a lot of man-marking across the field.

“So, you could stop a game at any moment with Leeds when they’re against the ball and you could almost say ‘alright, every player is matched up with an opponent and they’re playing 1v1’. We call our pressing ball-orientated.

“We believe that when we attack and attack all the way and we commit to winning balls, that we’re going to outnumber opponents in spaces on the field which is going to increase our chances of winning the ball. And then, we often leave players on the opposite side of the field open.

“Then when we win balls, we’re always trying to play forward and attack, and go as aggressively and quickly as we can to goal, because we feel that the opponent is disorganised in those moments.” – Jesse Marsch

Scoring goals and creating chances (Leeds are sixth this season for shots attempted) generally wasn’t an issue during Bielsa’s tenure but conceding them was, especially during 2021/22.

Marsch appears to be cut from the same cloth.

Salzburg scored an average of over three goals per game under the American, while even Leipzig, despite dropping to 11th in the table by the time Marsch left, found the net at a rate of two goals per match during his spell in charge.

However, Leipzig shipped 1.5 goals per fixture under the new Leeds boss in all competitions – not nearly as many as what the Whites have been letting in this season but excessive for a side that had finished second in the previous campaign.

“Looking at Leipzig’s 10-game rolling average of expected goals (xG) for and against, you can see that their chance creation remained strong after Nagelsmann’s departure, averaging chances worthy of two goals on average per 90 minutes across Marsch’s time in Germany.

“The issue was at the other end of the field, where the quality of chances conceded crept higher under Marsch. When Nagelsmann departed, Leipzig’s 10-game average was conceding chances worth just shy of one goal per game. By the time Marsch left, that number crept to closer to 1.5 xG conceded per game — a notable increase.

“This defensive output is intrinsically linked to the style of play Marsch looked to implement. When the high press works well, you can suffocate the opposition. However, if the opposition manages to play through your press, you leave space behind and risk conceding high-quality chances. – Phil Hay, the Athletic

A look at RB’s results under Marsch provides a neat summation of his managerial style: there were emphatic 6-0, 4-0 and 4-1 wins on the domestic front against strugglers Hertha Berlin, Stuttgart and Greuther Furth but a 4-1 home reverse to Bayern Munich and a 6-3 loss to Manchester City in the Champions League.

“The players really feel a power to the sense that there’s a togetherness on the pitch, tactically and mentally. And that power frees them to be their best and go after games, frees them, even in the best games against Bayern Munich or Liverpool, to show their best version of themselves.

“Now, in some of these games, we’ve given up too many goals – in almost all of them! So we’re always trying to manage our aggressiveness in the right ways. But, in the end, this is who we are. This is what I believe in.” – Jesse Marsch speaking to the Coaches Voice

MORE ROTATION?

One of the many positives about Bielsa is that he rarely handed us too many shocks when it came to naming his starting XIs, even going as far as naming his entire line-up on more than one occasion.

We might have to get used to a bit more tinkering from Marsch, however, who previously spoke of his fondness for rotation in busy periods.

“I rotate players a lot, I believe in a big roster.

“It’s important to rotate, have fresh legs, get the balance right within the team and give young players chance to play – it’s the only way they can develop.” – Jesse Marsch, speaking to the Coaches Voice

Leeds’ senior squad is on the thin side at present so, given Marsch’s comments about rotation and “giving young players a chance”, it’ll be interesting to see if Joe Gelhardt (£4.6m) can get more of a sustained look-in than he did under Bielsa, particularly with Patrick Bamford (£7.7m) out for the foreseeable future.

FAVOURED TACTICS

Having served under Rangnick at Leipzig and then adopted the Manchester United manager’s trademark 4-2-2-2 at Salzburg, there has been much talk about whether Marsch will use the same set-up at Leeds.

However, pinning him down to one system doesn’t look like it will be that straightforward.

“In my time here [at Salzburg], I have played 11 different formations, so the formations aren’t nearly as important as the fundamental habits we have within the formation.” – Jesse Marsch

Marsch ended his reign in Germany playing a 3-4-2-1/3-4-3 and given Leeds’ current defensive problems, the money might be on an extra centre-half being used – particularly as he encountered issues at the back when trying to implement his pressing game in a 4-3-3 at Leipzig.

Leeds do have more out-and-out-wingers than Leipzig, so Raphinha, Daniel James (£6.0m) and Jack Harrison (£5.5m) won’t be used to playing so narrow. The hope from an FPL perspective is that one or more of them can adapt and emulate the goalscoring exploits of Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku, who got a lot of joy when making runs in behind the opposition defence from a number 10 role.

“The extra security without the ball apart, that [3-4-3] formation brings out of the best of Leipzig’s army of hybrid no 10s/forwards. They are all technically gifted but none of them is a true winger, and their instinct is always to move inside. When width is provided by the wing-backs they’re allowed to play closer together and, crucially, more slowly, with more precision.” – Rafael Honigstein in the Athletic

Junior Firpo (£4.7m) could be one to monitor if he emulates the attacking Angelino role from left wing-back, but FPL bosses will likely want to see an improvement in the goals conceded column before they go anywhere near a Leeds defender.

FINAL THOUGHTS

FPL Gameweek 14 round-up: Tuesday review, injury news and the things we learned

Marsch’s appointment comes at least a week too late, as we could have ideally done with seeing how his new charges will line up tactics-wise and whether they can immediately respond to fresh demands ahead of Double Gameweek 28. Given that the Leeds squad trained hard under the veteran taskmaster Bielsa, fitness at least shouldn’t be an issue with the organised press.

With so much unknown, FPL managers likely won’t take many gambles on Leeds assets for this upcoming double, aside from the semi-popular Raphinha.

But anyone using free transfers to navigate their way through Blank Gameweek 30 and beyond will be watching the matches against Leicester and Aston Villa with interest, as any fresh targets or a rejuvenated Raphinha might still be good pick-ups from Gameweek 29-32:

Ongoing injuries to key players will hamper Marsch’s efforts and his track record suggests he’s not going to tighten the defence up much.

But if he can once again get a tune out of Raphinha, whose form has nosedived since the winter break, and further boost the goal count at the other end of the pitch, most of us would settle for that.

Any Chelsea fans who might be able to advise on the likelihood of alonso starting both double gameweek matches?

I can afford alonso but rudiger involves hits and tearing up a good team.

It's quite team dependent. I'm likely to have eight doublers this week but they're either players I'm happy to hold (Rüdiger, Raphinha, Jiménez, Broja) or bench (Foster, Aït-Nouri, Livramento, King)

    Worth a bench boost?

    Foster²
    Trent Rüdiger² Aït-Nouri² Livramento²
    Salah Son Raphinha² Saka
    Jiménez² Broja²
    (Sánchez, Cancelo, Foden, King²)

I have mahrez Cancelo and Dennis so in a similar position....

I'm tempted to hold off until either 29 or 36, the Manchester derby is always a funny one, city should win but I would also expect man u to score which reduces the appeal of Cancelo this week compared to next week Vs palace

Currently ranked in top 400k, so chasing. 1 FT. Current team:

    Ramsdale/Sanchez
    Cash/Cancelo/Coady/TAA/White
    Bowen/Foden/Son/Salah/Raphina
    Broja/Dennis/Weghorst

    Would you...

    A) Cash --> Rudiger (exact money)
    B) Cancelo --> Rudiger

I'd hold cash, favourable dgw fixtures. Seems wrong to get rid of Cancelo due to his excellent form over the season, although it's probably the best option, particularly if Chelsea do get the dgw

    2. KieranKA
      • 2 Years

      A. You won't want Cash past this week and there's no guarantee of clean sheets in either of the Villa fixtures.

Keep Cash this gw & maybe get rid later depending on fixtures. Also Cancelo should be a long term choice.

Think Dennis/Weghorst gotta leave your team this gw, probably weghorst

Yep I was leaning towards that decision, having taken a -16 to get that team I think another slightly risky plan (not going Salah C) is worth it especially as I'm chasing

Martinelli out of that lot if playing Jamsey.

White, Martinelli and Gordon currently on the bench. If swapping Gordon to Ramsey via a Cody -> Ait-Nouri downgrade, I’d have to drop a DGWer (eg Ramsey) or one of Trent/Son/Salah/Kane. This is what puts me off Ramsey!

        2. KieranKA

White Livra Ramsey is good but I would prioritise Coady.

    Bit different this but DDG, RAN and Bowen to Sa T.Silva Elyounoussi for -8 would give me;

    Sa*
    TAA T.Silva* Cash*
    Salah JWP* Raphinha* Elyounoussi*
    Kane Dennis* Broja*

    Steele Cancelo VVD Foden bench.
Bit mad digging deep in that Saints form. WC FHx2 BB intact. Thoughts?

I get Thiago Silva and Sa (have him myself) but I'm not keen on elyounoussi, I feel Willock or Ramsey would work better seen as you have JWP

Any Spurs defenders worth a look if Saints win tonight?

Doherty @4.7m is a little tempting given his attacking threat and Spurs fixtures all the way to the end.

    1. TanN
      • 3 Years
      2 years, 2 months ago

Doherty would be the only one worth considering, Reguilon is out of favour and the central defenders e.g. dier might seem good value but compared to similar priced players he's not worth it in my opinion. Sessegnon is the other wing back at the minute but not convinced personally

    2. lilmessipran

Doherty could be gold but I fear for his minutes

I understand what your saying, hardly nailed is he! If I was on a WC I wouldn't but as a FT for someone who is injured/not playing it could pay off big time

    3. FredrikH
      • 11 Years
      2 years, 2 months ago

Sadly they dont play Leeds every week. Romero is undroppable but injury prone. Dier and Davies pretty safe but boring picks. I think Sessegnon offers the best value if rotation doesnt scare you. He's finding some form and understanding the system it seems. Personally just staying off. 1CS in last 7. Think i'd play any Chelsea/City/Pool def SGW over any of them.

      Bruno --> Coutinho
      Bowen --> Son

      Decent -4 option

      (Provided you can afford it)

Or do the above plus Edouard to Broja for a -8 which

      1. KieranKA
        • 2 Years

Personally prefer Bruno Bowen --> Son Raphinha, definitely affordable and better long term fixtures than Coutinho. Jota played in the League Cup final so he's fit again too.

Certainly no immediate need for a WC
