FPL Gameweek 31 preview: Key player and team stats

Our Big Numbers piece looks at the key player and team statistics ahead of Gameweek 31 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

4.4 points per start for Nick Pope (£5.4m) in this calendar year. That has gone up from 3.1 points per start before that. Burnley have the joint-most number of games and Double Gameweeks left out of all the clubs in the league. Only two starting ‘keepers have more points than Pope this calendar year, with the Burnley custodian’s six bonus points in this period bettered only by Alisson (£6.0m).

+4.50 is the xG prevented (xGP) by Kasper Schmeichel (£4.8m) in 2022. While Leicester aren’t exactly known for their defensive ability, they have two clean sheets in the last four matches and have key defenders like Wesley Fofana (£4.3m), Jonny Evans (£5.4m), Timothy Castagne (£5.3m) and James Justin (£4.9m) coming back to fitness. Leicester have the most number of games pending in the league (along with Burnley and Everton) but are also placed 10th in the league, so not having much to play for will invariably prioritise their European tie against PSV.

73 points for Andrew Robertson (£7.3m) in the calendar year, the most of any FPL defender. He averages a staggering 9.1 points per start, the highest rate amongst all Premier League players. He’s second only to Harry Kane (£12.5m) for total points in 2022 and the England striker has played 360 minutes more in this period.

60 shots for Joao Cancelo (£6.9m) in 2021/22, which is 19 more than the second-best defender. He’s also ranked 13th amongst all outfielders for goal attempts and is second only to Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m) for bonus points this season, having registered 26 of fthem. If you sold him in the Gameweek 26-30 period, like me, I’d look to prioritise him as a transfer in.

8 returns for Joel Matip (£4.9m) in the last six matches, which includes one goal, two assists and five clean sheets. Are we overlooking him as a value option in that Liverpool defence? The state of the title race also means that he should start more often than not in the run-in.

Just like my previous article where I look back at Gameweeks 26-30, there is an overriding theme with this article: “Good players, good teams.”

Ramsdale may be a doubt but you've got decent cover.

King is the guy I'd definitely bench but feel that Weghorst is quite a punt too.

Home to Everton is Burnley's crunch match really in the relegation fight. If they lose it's looking down.

It's just with Sarr coming back Cucho could be benched soon.

Also with Covid-19 widespread still and international travel you'd have to expect more mixing means more positive Coronavirus tests.

Therefore even without a BB a viable bench is important still.

Which players are poor picks on a wildcard?

Currently on a gw31 wildcard of...

    Allison Guaita
    Cancelo Matip White Chalobah Amartey
    Salah KDB Saka Kulusevski Barnes
    Kane Mateta Cucho

I've traded off Liverpool in defence quite substantially for premiums elsewhere and I'm covering off for a BB to follow in gw36 or even 37 if that falls better.

Also will refine for the BB with transfers nearer the time

    1. JT11fc
      • 5 Years

Could pay off but I feel that 3 premiums hurts the team abit too much for my liking, Mateta and Amartey look like the weakest links

True, no KDB means him and Barnes become Havertz and Mahrez with £1.7m to upgrade others.

If the weaker players are involved for their clubs then i can live with that for now.

        Will keep tinkering.

It's an idea I've looked at and i may switch in a few games.

I've bought KDB over Son tbf as i want Manchester City v Burnley and think Mahrez is a Champions League rotation risk, their prime one to protect away at Burnley and KDB has been rested by Belgium.

You're well set but could be relying on save points and Foster keeping it low scoring at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime.

I think Antonio and Broja are where you should change.

i have some ground to build up in my ML and i am the only one in the top 4 with WC. Tempted to WC this week to bring in city, chelsea to get a jump on my rivals that all have no city and no chelsea currently and will begin to bring them in now.

    Current Team:
    Sanchez
    white / taa / doherty
    kulu / cout / salah / raph
    adams / laca / kane
    B: guaita / livra / neves / kilman

    WC Draft:
    Guaita:
    cancelo / robbo / james
    havertz / salah / foden / gordon / kulu
    kane / weghorst
    B: Raya / amartey / doherty / mateta
Worth it or just save for 34? I'm open to suggestions, thanks in advance.

    TAA Rudiger Doherty
    Saka Coutinho Raphinha Son
    Lacazette Broja Kane

    Dubravka Barnes Saiss Kilman

    1FT, 1.7itb

Keepers are a mess but might need to ride it out, and I'm hopeful TAA will be OK after IB (otherwise swap for Robertson), should I still go with my planned moves of...

    Son Coutinho >> Salah Kulusevski (-4) ?

Early days but nice to have a draft plan in place.

        * a west London game against Brentford could get a bit grudgy.

Albeit Chelsea at home may take an edge off it.

Would expect Chelsea and Manchester City to protect some players.

        Liverpool less likely.

Leicester will too with PSV and West Ham have Lyon.

All two legs either side of gw32.

That's why Arsenal and Spurs are the safer plays for now.

With this team and BB and 2 FHs left, guess the best strategy is

    FH GW 33,
    build for BB GW 36
and use the 2nd FH in GW 37 or 38?

    Ramsdale, Dubravka
Rudiger, Doherty, TAA, Cancelo, Saiss, Kilman
    Saka, Barnes, Salah, Kulu, Ramsey
    Jimenez, Lacazette, Kane

    Ramsdale (Foster)
    TAA Cancelo James (White, Amartey)
    Salah Mahrez Havertz Saka Gordon
    Kane Weghorst (Gelhardt)

£0.1m in the bank. Foden instead of Mahrez is a consideration.

It's v strong for the run in.

Goalkeepers could be an issue in gw31 for points, minus points possible if Ramsdale isn't fit but Foster can surprise.

Mahrez and Havertz are great but may they be the prize players protected for the Champions League games?

      1. YuvalFPL
        • 13 Years
        2 years, 1 month ago

if I get news Ramsdale isn't fit then I'll probably go Pope. If Ramsdale is fit, I can see him outscoring Pope until the end of the season anyway.

Havertz and Gordon will go for Sancho and Barnes for the doubles in 33 as part of my current plans. Mahrez vs Burnley is just taking my eye, Foden much safer.

    2. Arteta
      • 8 Years

I think that you have too many players who aren't guaranteed to start or play at all. Firstly, I would go for Maddison or Barnes rather than Havertz and Broja instead of Gelhardt. Secondly, you know the risks with James, Mahrez and that their managers will definitely use them in the remaining games of Champions League. Can you live with the occasional benching? Finally, do you think that Amartey will keep his starting place and are you counting on him when it's bench boost time?

      1. YuvalFPL
        • 13 Years
        2 years, 1 month ago

Maddison or Barnes earmarked for 33, not appealing for the next two. Broja has recently been dropped and can't score to save his life, although I think he's great. James is arguably the best pick on the whole game when he starts. He might miss one or two until the end of the season, upside is still much higher than Rudiger. Mahrez is a fair point, I can switch to Foden and upgrade Amartey or Gelhardt. Thanks.

Liverpool, Chelsea & City have CL games wedged between the PL games, so a huge risk of rotation to Cancelo James Mahrez Havertz (Salah & TAA less so).

Amartey, Gordon, Gelhardt may be benched any game.

In any given game week you may only be putting out 7 or 8 players at worst, or 11 at best with no out field subs … imho.

      1. YuvalFPL
        • 13 Years
        2 years, 1 month ago

Liverpool and City still have a lot to play for. Chelsea are only 5 points ahead of Arsenal and play them in 33. If Chelsea win their game in hand, they are 7 points behind Liverpool. Still plenty to play for. Cancelo is just as much of a minutes risk as Trent and Robertson, really not worried about that. Gordon starts every game. With Townsend now out till next season, I expect Gordon to continue playing majority of minutes. Only picking him for 33 anyway, then White will start ahead of him.

they can’t play them all and it’s 7 games in 22 days after the IB so something is going to give … can’t see any of the CL teams playing anything but their front line team in those games and that means rotation in the PL against the likes of Watford, Brentford, Burnley, Soton, Brighton, Watford etc rather than Benfica, Athletico & Madrid … imho

          GL though

      TAA to Robbo
      James to Rudiger (for now)
      Amartey to Mitchell
      Mahrez to Foden/Maddison
      Havertz to Mount/Barnes
      Gordon to Kulu
      Gelhardt to Broja

Will obviously not include TAA if he's injured.
Why would I want Rudiger over James? James could start 4 less games than him and I'd still fancy him to outscore him.
Similar for Mount - Havertz is a much better FPL option.
Gordon has a double in 31. Happy to bring in a Leicester midfield when 33 comes around.
I'm happy to start White most weeks so no need to have Kulu over Gordon IMO.

A bit of left field thinking, but would you possibly FH this week to fill a team with Liverpool, city, Chelsea and Spurs players?

Pro: favourable fixtures and away from the potential “rest” around semi finals etc in GW36

Pro: likely to be able to get nearly a full DGW squad in 36 anyway

    Cons: not DGW

    Thoughts?

    Should I do:

    A) Coutinho + TAA to Havertz + Robbo for -4

    B) Coutinho to Havertz and bench TAA for Nouri/Broja(which one).

    If Ramsdale is out
    A. Ramsdale -> Pope
    B. Play Foster

I also have Jimenez and TAA but I'd be ok to bench both this week.

I've got the same issue and I think I'm going to go A (although FH for Pope in GW27 when I had Foster backfired terribly)

Tier 1 journalist regarding PSV news is saying that Coady Gakpo could be on his way to Arsenal in the summer. This means another versatile young forward is coming in the team and competition for places is spicing up. From what I've read his favourite/best position is on the left wing, which could potentially lead to Martinelli's transformation to a striker. Exciting times are ahead of us!

How bad of a business Pepe for 75m pounds was isn't spoken about enough.

Yeaaah don't know about that. Maguire has had a decent season(not this one, in general) in a MU shirt. Pepe has barely had a decent match in a Arsenal shirt. But to each their own.

Utd havent won a trophy since Harry set foot in Old Trafford, not to mention the series of individual mistakes he has made. Pepe, while annoyingly hot and cold, was good last season and directly contributed to Arsenal's fa cup win before that. But yeah lets leave it there lol

I think it's been spoken about plenty mate. £15m was paid to Pepe's agents to which sackings were made at Arsenal. The actual price for him was much lower. It's not his fault Saka is a world beater. He'll leave Arsenal and everyone will see just how much of a talent he is.

I'm doing WC in GW34. Have 2 FTs.

Which move this GW you consider is better?

    A) Jimenez -> Weghorst
    B) Jimenez & TAA -> Amartey & Ronaldo

Of course will wait and see how Ronaldo looks like after match with Macedonia

    Sa (Dubravka)
    Rudiger Cancelo White (TAA, Coady)
    Saka Salah Willock Son Gordan
    Laca Borja (Jimenez)

With Jimenez suspended, which is the better move? Planning to go with A but not sure whether it is advisable not to have Kane in my squad.... Can't get him too unless I transfer out Son or Salah to raise funds....
    (A) Weghorst for Jimenez
    (B) Kane + Brownhill for Son & Jimenez (-4)
