Compete for real prizes in the free-to-play Sorare Academy this weekend

Sponsored by Sorare

The competition has been heating up in the Sorare Academy over the summer, with the Major League Soccer (MLS) games providing a bucket-load of goals and plenty of fun!

Don’t forget that you can enter a team for free every week in the Sorare Academy and be in with a chance of winning a Limited card.

The deadline this week, as ever, is on Friday at 11am BST.

Guest writer and Sorare expert MDJ talks us through this week’s MLS eye-catchers…

Last gameweek

Fifteen more managers secured a Limited card prize last week. Top of our leaderboard was manager isimyok with this team – a neat combo of a Philadelphia defensive stack and a Los Angeles attacking duo:

We’re more than halfway through the regular season, so it’s getting easier to see the players and teams to target and those to stay clear of. Form could be crucial this Gameweek, with some close match-ups between the better teams in the league.

Philadelphia Union

Philadelphia are having a good season and are currently level on points at the top of the Eastern Conference, largely due to their ridiculously stingy defence. Their 7-0 demolition of D.C. United last weekend was a nice boost for their goal difference and was also a record-breaker – the most goals they’ve ever scored in a single game.

New England Revolution will be a much tougher opponent than D.C but it could be another opportunity for their defence to show their strength. Andre Blake is the go-to goalkeeper in the game with Jack Elliott, Jakob Glesnes and Kai Wagner all worth consideration for your defender spot.

Los Angeles FC

Los Angeles are leading the race for the Supporters’ Shield and deservedly so. Despite a little wobble earlier in the season, they seem to be firing on all cylinders again, with all their key players making solid contributions to games.

If you’re looking for in-form players, you need to look no further than José Cifuentes and Carlos Vela. With averages exceeding 70 points over the last five games, they are the overall top scorers in the MLS, from a Sorare point of view. This is due to them grabbing plenty of decisive scores for goals and assists, as well as having a good score base from their all around play.

Nashville are a decent team so Los Angeles will have to work hard to beat them, especially on the road. Hany Mukhtar is in great form for Nashville at the moment, if you fancy backing the home side.

Portland Timbers

After a poor start to the season, Portland seem to have turned a corner in the last few weeks and are unbeaten in their last five, with 11 goals scored and only four conceded.

Jaroslaw Niezgoda has been a factor in that turnaround. The Polish centre-forward has struggled since an ACL injury in 2021 but four goals and an assist in the last five games suggests he could be recapturing his form from a couple of years ago.

Sebastián Blanco has looked lively in midfield and defender Claudio Bravo has been posting some ridiculous scores, including 97 last weekend, with only one decisive. Up against low-scoring Vancouver Whitecaps, he could easily put up a similar sort of score.

New York, New York

We can’t talk about form teams without mentioning New York City. After starting the season at 100 miles per hour, they’ve dropped down a gear or two in recent weeks, dropping points against Atlanta, Cincinnati, Philadelphia and Colorado Rapids.

Defensively they may look a little more vulnerable than before but their attack is just as devastating as ever so you still have to fancy them to grab a goal or two against their city rivals New York Red Bulls. There is a smorgasbord of options to choose from up front, with Talles Magno, Maximiliano Moralez and Valentín Castellanos the best of the bunch.

It’s harder to pick a form player from the Red Bulls side of the city. Lewis Morgan is probably the best option for consistency alone, although he’s struggled to hit the high peaks that you need to in order to climb the leaderboard in this game. This is largely due to his lower all around scores, so he really needs two decisives to hit the sort of scores you need. The Hudson River Derby probably isn’t the game for that… but you never know!

My team

Below is the team I’ll be entering – barring any surprise injuries or other news in midweek:

As well as the players I’ve mentioned above, I think Emanuel Reynoso is worth a look. He is in top form at the moment with four goals and an assist in the last three games. Minnesota play D.C. United at the weekend, a team that looks battered and broken, with rock-bottom levels of confidence. For me, that’s a combination too good to resist!

It’s as simple as that – pick five players and press enter! So what are you waiting for? Don’t forget to enter before the 11am Friday deadline – and good luck!

    Meslier 4.0
    TAA Laporte Perisic Trippier 4.0
    Sterling Saka Maddison Wissa 4.5
    Kane Haaland 4.5

    Not too shabby!

I am also thinking of Kane-Haaland at the top. But with different personnel. My current draft has Cancelo, James, Diaz instead of your Laporte, Perisic, Sterling.

I am getting increasingly convinced with this draft:
      1) Gives flexibility to jump on low-priced bandwagons as they start appearing.
      2) Salah is too costly if not captained every week.
      3) Balanced team all over the pitch. GK and 4th mid are only weak links, but many options at that price point.
      4) Have penalty takers from top teams: Man City, Arsenal, Spurs.

      Also,
GK : why Meslier over Raya / Sanchez / Pickford?

Everyone's just bandwagoning on whoever the latest article is on. A couple of days ago, Jesus was in everyone's team. I guess for the next 2 days, we'll see Sterling now.

Came down to this on Salah vs no Salah teams:

    A. Salah + Martinelli
    B. Kane + Robertson

    Which option scores more?

I think it is better to start with B. In my opinion, Robertson will outscore Martinelli, Salah will outscore Kane. But margin will be higher for Robertson-Martinelli. However, once the cheap mid options emerge after the first 2-3 gameweeks, option A will become better.

For my drafts, Salah vs no-Salah boils down to:
      A. Salah • 6.5mid • Jesus (no Spurs player, cannot find reliable 6.5mid in the game)
      B. Diaz • Saka • Kane (solved both issues, also prefer Saka over Jesus)

yeah could be the case, still would mean a lot of lost minutes, something that won't happen to Kane

damn, would've thought Rich meant less gametime for Kulu and maybe Son

If Kane does end up getting subbed early regularly then that'd be frustrating, no premiums are that desirable at the moment

    Thoughts on this team:

    Raya
    TAA(v), Cancelo, James, Perisic
    Salah(c), Mahrez, Diaz, Mount
    Jesus, Johnson

    Sanchez, Neto, N.Williams, Greenwood

Couple of differentials in there. What do you think of the Mahrez pick? If he gets regular game time he's a bargain, but is that too bif an 'if'?

Not sure what I'd do with the extra mil? Johnson to Toney?
I'd also be scared to death of not owning Salah!
            Food for thought 🙂

Downgrade Johnson to Undav ➝ another 0.5m
              Downgrade Sanchez to 4.0m ➝ another 0.5m
Upgrade Mahrez to Sterling with that extra 2.0m.

I think Saka, Maddison, Foden and Grealish are some ≤ £8.0m players, who may score more than Diaz. Stay clear of Mahrez for now, because penalty duties may go to Haaland.

Very much doubt Chelsea are signing Koulibaly, Kimpembe and Ake to switch to a back 4.

    Mendy
    Ake, Koulibaly, Kimpembe
    James, Kante, Kovacic, Chilwell
    Mount, Havertz, Sterling

yeah and if Tuchel wanted to move to a 4 back Chelsea would be signing a top class DM instead imo
At least it means Chilwell and James remain great options

I was liking the idea of £5m ake at set pieces but if they buy kimpembe on top of koulibaly, with Tilva still around, someone’s minutes aren’t assured.

How concerned should I be regarding Perisic's minutes? My 4.5 sub could become Neco Williams, and Perisic could become Reece James. But is it worth it?

I think he starts games & gets subbed early initially. He seemed to play the full 90 for Inter last season but picked up an calf injury in the last game which he is still recovering from

When champions league starts there is obvious danger of being rotated

      Mitrovic > Toney 😀

But tbh I don't think 3 11.5mil+ players is worth it, you're relying too heavily on cheap 6mil and under mids

    The usual fodder bench

Currently my 5 is Doherty but I have my eye on Trippier

    My 8 is on Mount

Tough competition for £8.0m players: Saka, Diaz, Mount, Maddison, Mahrez, Foden. All of them may score 160-180 points. Do you think Jesus will outscore them? He will need at least 28 goals + assists combined to reach those points.

Yeah I don’t really play for clean sheets, as they get randomly struck off - saves usually a better indicator for me, though that would suggest Meslier

The extra save points from Meslier will be compensated by negative points from goals conceded. Meslier conceded 79 goals last season (xG on target was 62). Pickford conceded 57 goals last season (xG on target was 53). With Kalvin Philips not in the team, the number of saves and goals conceded will increase for Meslier.

3 way rotation using Pereira and Neco?

Is there a third player out there to make it happen?

Surely you'll find a 4.5m defender that fits the bill.

    Mendy
    Chilwell Koulibaly Silva Kimpembe James

Now that is some defence - if Chelsea get their targets then both wingbacks will be a lock for me

I see that attempting to go Salahless is getting cool again! What more does the guy have to prove! 230+ points in every single season he has been in - which equates to over 6 points per match even in his worst season to date.

Plus he plays Fulham GW1 and follows it up with a series of great fixtures!

I’ll never understand why some people still think it makes sense to go without.

Barring injuries until we get to the DGW / rotation part of the season he will sit in my team and will not be touched.

Indeed but no one has done it with such consistency.

To put those 5 230+ points in context - Son, KDB and Kane have all only hit this mark once in their career!

Plus Salah has lovely fixtures to begin with - him and Trent really should be no brainers for me

Agree with all you said. But there was no Haaland in any of those seasons.

Without the captaincy armband (which now goes to Haaland), 230+ points doesn't translate to good value. You will get more points per million from 8m - 10m players.

Salah has had to contend with KDB, Kane, Son, Aguero, prime Sterling, Mane, prime Aubameyang and has still been the most consistent scorer in the game.

As exciting an fpl prospect as Haaland is I think it’s a bit overhyped to say hell suddenly break the game without him having played a single competitive game for City.

All the players you mentioned are of course exceptionally talented players! However, none of them are generational talents like Haaland and Mbappe.

I respect your opinion. However, my opinions are different, and FPL is a game of opinions. I think, Haaland and Mbappe are well above anyone else. Like Messi and Ronaldo of the past decade. I have watched them at Borussia Dortmund and PSG, and they shouldn't be compared to the other players you mentioned -- they are better!

        Example:
        Kane -- 192 points for 11.5m.
        Salah -- 265 points for 13m.

I understand it is oversimplification, but as a casual I will prefer Kane over Salah with the above numbers. But, I am betting on Haaland to outscore Salah. If I think Salah will outscore Haaland, then I will drop Haaland and switch back to Salah. Not a big deal.

In this example you’d be daft to go for Kane. Finding an additional 73 points for £1.5m is basically impossible.

    A) Kane & Saka
    B) Son & Jesus

Mind is saying A because they’re both penalty takers. Heart is saying B because I love Son haha. Jesus might take the penalty duties though?

What would be game-changing (and credible) is:

    Ake moving to Chelsea
    Cucurella moving to City
    Rashford being a nailed starter
    Diaz being a nailed starter
    Sterling playing as a CF

If that happened, you would have five under priced players who could go straight into your team. Never bench, never captain.

Can't see Ake or Cucurella being nailed but could be worth the rotation risk at 5m.

Ake will not start if Kimpembe and Koulibaly comes to Chelsea.
Cucurella will not start for City.
      Diaz already nailed, isn't he?

I want Rashford to become a nailed starter.

Cucurella could well start - I’m not saying definitely but could. Walker likely to start being phased out.
