MANCHESTER UNITED 3-1 CRYSTAL PALACE

  • Goals: Martial, Rashford, Sancho | Ward
  • Assists: Dalot, van de Beek, Martial | Milivojevic

Match highlights

Manchester United made it a clean sweep of pre-season victories so far by comfortably defeating Crystal Palace 3-1 in Melbourne.

Attacking trio Anthony Martial (£7.0m), Marcus Rashford (£6.5m) and Jadon Sancho (£7.5m) continue to impress and were all on the scoresheet, which Bruno Fernandes (£10.0m) discussed after the game.

“… the three guys up front have been much more aggressive in the way they press and they are strong too. They make the last line squeeze and it makes the midfielders come a little bit higher, it makes it so, when we recover the ball, we are being closer to the ball too.

We all know that everyone wants to score goals, but the main ones have to be the strikers. They know that they have to be there to score goals and they are doing really well. We have to keep supporting them in making them happy because we know that they lead from the goals.” – Bruno Fernandes

Martial added to his strikes against Liverpool and Melbourne Victory with a composed finish from a lovely left-footed Diogo Dalot cross (£4.5m), while Sancho was electric on the right-wing and has arguably been United’s standout player of the tour so far.

As for Dalot, there was a moment in the first-half when he made another one of those infield runs, cutting inside Sancho and offering a passing option, and it’s that partnership that is already looking strong.

Tyrell Malacia (£4.5m), meanwhile, made his first United start, lasting 77 minutes.

“I think it’s pre-season and we are happy with the improvement we see but also you see a lot of work to do. We scored some wonderful goals and that is also true. I agree (that we are winning the ball higher up in the field in dangerous positions) and that is also the demand on the team. We press all day and, if we can, do that high up the pitch. But if we can’t, we get to do that in a lower block but we also have to press and do it together as a team.” – Erik ten Hag

As for Crystal Palace, Joel Ward (£4.5m) headed in a Luka Milivojevic (£4.5m) corner with 15 minutes remaining, while Jack Butland (£4.5m) was forced off after feeling pain following a fingertip save.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): de Gea; Dalot (Wan-Bissaka 66), Maguire (Fish 65), Lindelof (Telles 66), Malacia (Laird 77); McTominay (van de Beek 46), Fred (Savage 66); Sancho (Amad 66), Fernandes (Iqbal 66), Rashford (Hannibal 66); Martial (Elanga 66)

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Butland (Matthews 15); Clyne (Quick 65), Andersen (Siddik 77), Ward (O’Brien 77), Mitchell (Adaramola 65); Milivojevic (Boateng 77), Phillips (Ozoh 65), Rak-Sakyi (Raymond 65); Ebiowei (Banks 77), Ayew (Akinwale 77), Mateta (Ola-Adebomi 65)

GILLINGHAM 2-3 CRYSTAL PALACE

  • Goals: Zaha x2, Benteke
  • Assists: Benteke, Zaha

Match highlights

The second part of Crystal Palace’s friendly double-header on Tuesday took place at the Priestfield Stadium, where a Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) brace and Christian Benteke (£5.5m) goal was enough to earn a 3-2 win.

The Eagles put out a strong XI consisting of players who didn’t travel to Singapore and Australia, with Zaha, Benteke, Marc Guehi (£4.5m), Eberechi Eze (£5.5m) and new-signing Cheick Doucoure (£5.0m) all featuring from the off.

Zaha, meanwhile, was in confident mood and heavily involved from the left-wing, while budget forward Luke Plange (£4.5m) followed up his hat-trick against Ipswich Town with another start.

Crystal Palace XI: Goodman, Boateng (Wells-Morrison 68), Sheridan, Guehi (Gordon 68), Riedewald (Addae 68), Doucoure (Bartley 68), Eze (MacArthur 68), Schlupp (Hughes 68), Plange (Cardogan 79), Zaha (Mooney 79), Benteke (Watson 68)

RANGERS 3-1 WEST HAM UNITED

  • Goals: Soucek
  • Assists: Zouma

Match highlights

West Ham United suffered a 3-1 defeat at Ibrox on Tuesday, their first loss of pre-season.

After a finely balanced first-half, Rangers stepped up a gear with three goals inside 15 minutes, before Tomas Soucek (£5.5m) pulled one back from a corner for David Moyes’ side.

Declan Rice (£5.0m) got some more pre-season minutes under his belt but new centre-back signing Nayef Aguerd (£5.0m) picked up an ankle injury, with Issa Diop (£4.5m) coming on in his place.

However, Moyes later revealed the Moroccan hadn’t suffered a break.

“We’ve already had Nayef x-rayed and there’s no break in his ankle, which is good news. It might be some ligaments, or he’s twisted his ankle – it blew up immediately so we have to hope it’s not a problem.” – David Moyes

Elsewhere, Jarrod Bowen (£8.5m) was probably West Ham’s best player but failed to get the goal his play deserved.

“They’re a good side, but I thought the goals showed the other side to us too. It’s not like us to defend the way we did, but that wasn’t the main reason. We didn’t show enough attacking purpose and when we had a couple of half-chances we didn’t take them. Look, it’s a pre-season game, so hopefully we can get it out of the way and move on. It was always going to be a difficult game, but I’m disappointed with a lot of elements of the game and things that we did.

I hope it comes as a good thing having a wake-up call, but I thought it was a good pre-season last year when we won all the games. You want to win the games and you want to go in (to the season) in good form. We certainly need to make a lot of changes and do something different, that’s for sure.” – David Moyes

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Johnson (Coufal 55), Zouma, Aguerd (Diop 24), Cresswell, Rice (Downes 55), Lanzini (Soucek 55); Bowen, Fornals (Coventry 75), Benrahma (Vlasic 55), Antonio (Mubama 75)

STRASBOURG 2-2 BRENTFORD

  • Goals: Wissa, Lewis-Potter
  • Assists: Janelt

Match highlights

Brentford’s pre-season tour of Germany ended with a 2-2 draw against Ligue 1 side Strasbourg.

Yoane Wissa (£5.5m) scored a superb first-half effort, blasting into the net after a decent first touch, while Keane Lewis-Potter (£5.5m) is off the mark following his 16m move from Hull City.

The pair may end up competing for minutes in 2022/23, although for those considering Wissa as a budget midfielder, Athletic journalist Jay Harris sounded upbeat on his chances of starting Gameweek 1 in a recent Q&A:

“If Brentford start the season playing 4-3-3, I expect Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo to play rather than Lewis-Potter. Wissa was the club’s second-leading goalscorer last season with 10. Mbeumo recorded the most assists (seven) and Frank also values his work out of possession. This will allow Lewis-Potter to be gradually integrated into the side, instead of being thrown in straight away as he steps up a division from the Championship. The England U21 international’s favourite position is on the left wing, which suggests he will mainly be competing against Wissa for game time, although he is versatile. Lewis-Potter’s arrival gives Frank more options up front.” – Jay Harris, Brentford reporter for The Athletic

Ivan Toney (£7.0m), meanwhile, hit the bar from 10 yards out, with Thomas Frank generally happy with his team’s efforts in the final-third:

“There were a lot of positives. It was a game against a good side and overall, we kept them quiet. I like the intention and intensity. We lacked a bit of quality sometimes. We’d like to play even quicker but the pitch was slow. In the game, we maybe created six chances, so we need to score one or two more goals. We also need to defend better in the box.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford XI (4-3-3): Raya (Cox 60); Hickey (Roerslev 60), Bech (Crama 60), Jansson (Oyegoke 60), Henry (Stevens 60); Jensen (Dasilva 60), Janelt (Trevitt 60), Onyeka (Baptiste 60); Mbeumo (Dervisoglu 60), Wissa (Ghoddos 60), Toney (Lewis-Potter 60)

BRAGA 2-1 BOURNEMOUTH

  • Goals: Solanke
  • Assists:

Match highlights

Bournemouth ended their Portugal training camp with defeat against a strong Braga outfit that finished fourth in the Primeira Liga last season.

However, Dominic Solanke (£6.0m) netted his second goal of pre-season and really should have added to it, going close on several occasions.

Ryan Christie (£5.5m) linked up particularly well with Solanke with some clever passes, while at the other end, ‘keeper Mark Travers (£4.5m) made two smart saves.

In the 70th minute Bournemouth made wholesale changes, with a number of academy prospects taking to the pitch.

Bournemouth XI: Travers (Lossl 70), Smith (Genesini 70), Mepham (Stacey 70), Hill (Greenwood 70), Zemura (Sadi 70), Billing (Lowe 70), Cook (Stanislas 70), Lerma (Marcondes 70), Rothwell (Anthony 70), Christie (Dembele 70), Solanke (Moore 70)

I think I'm pretty settled with this draft. Only potential change I might make is Martinelli to Wissa but will wait for more pre season info

    Henderson, Hennesey
    TAA, Laporte, Chilwell, Trippier, N.Williams
    Salah, Mount, Diaz, Martinelli, Andreas
Kane, Wilson, Plange (or other 4.5 fodder)

    Any thoughts?

I just think before his injury he was better. I had James a lot last season and his niggly injuries were annoying. In one week, out for a couple and then back in etc. Going to monitor how Chilwell goes in pre season first anyway

It's not as easy to predict as people on here would have you believe. West Ham have good fixtures bar City at home. The city game and the .5 over the 8mils are reason people aren't choosing him. But I believe he'll push on and prove invaluable. He's set in my team

I'm still stuck on the one big question. Son or Haaland?

Son is guaranteed 200+ points but Haalands goalscoring record is simply staggering.

problem is if not haaland who else from CIty? KDB way too expensive, Mahrez probably the best option but could be rotated though I think this season he starts more with Sterling gone.
City fixtures too good to ignore.

How is KDB 'way too expensive', he was the highest scoring player a couple of seasons ago. He could easily do it again if he stays fit.

depends on his position; sometimes he plays deep, sometimes advanced; no way to tell with Pep; if he plays deep he is worth like 8m; if advanced maybe 10-11

He is on par with Salah in terms of pp90 despite often playing deep, struggled with injuries last season so his ppg was lower than usual.
If City score a lot of goals this season he could be the highest scoring player.

Here’s how I’m looking at it. Son likely to outscore Haaland this season. But in my team structure, it’s basically Son + 7.5 fwd or Haaland + Diaz/other 8.0 mid.

I think Haaland and Diaz probably outscore Son and any 7.5 fwd.

And I have Salah and would rarely captain Son over him.

      So, I’m going with Haaland.

Makes sense, in mine it's Haaland / Madison / Cash Vs Mitro / Son / Dias

        If I had to guess points I'd say 220 + 175 + 140 Vs 140 + 235 + 160. Too close to call

Big Sonny fan here, but it’s been a minute since anyone not named Mo Salah bettered his last season’s points. Don’t know that I’d say it’s likely that Son can do that this campaign.

Bruno confirming that ETH has told him he wants him to focus on ball retention and that he doesn't really get it! I thought he might be the one that needs to adapt the most given his penchant for playing risky passes so often

He does loose the ball a bit but the risky passes created more chances than anyone else last season.

Only Trent & KDB close to him and about 45% or trents were set pieces

It's true, but i do wonder how many times he gave the ball away or lost possession resulted in opposition getting chances themselves. Only 7 teams conceded more than ManUtd last season, with 6 of those being in the bottom half of the table

I do agree it's his position to lose though with a very decent Eriksen waiting in the wings.

Not sure who misses out exactly (haven't been following Villa and their different formations last season), but he is expected to play right wing atm. It's one for the watchlist for the rest of preseason and if he continues I'll take the gamble.

Shhhhh leave them be. People seem to be quickly forgetting how many assists he got last season despite City not having a recognised striker and how many shots he had last season (yes he takes a fair few from distance, but he was unlucky not to score more than his sole goal). Looking at his assist for Jesus against Liverpool or both assists against ManUtd and the idea of him putting crosses into those spaces with Haaland around is tantalising.

It’s looking pretty good so far for Utd, assuming Ronaldo stays out the way.
    What’s the better option,
Son and Martial or Kane and Rashford (1m cheaper)?
Martial seems to be enjoying the new system and could get a run of games if Ronaldo leaves. I haven’t got any of these combos in my draft but just trying to look for something different.

If your going for Kane I'd go Kane&Sancho

He's been the standout so far in the 3 games.
ETH happy with left side of attack in the first game more than right side and when he switched to the right in second game he said opposite. Palace game him amd Dalot linked up well

Currently on 5-3-2 with option (A) below. Worth playing (B) 4-5-1 with a stronger bench? No captaincy on Kane. Third bench (not shown here) will never see a minute on the field. Already have Diaz and Mount as other 8.0m mids.

    A. Kane - Trippier - (Andreas) - (DaSilva)
    B. Saka - Sancho - (Trippier) - (Undav)

Think Kane (220) + Trippier (130) will score similar points to Saka (180) + Sancho (170), but the stronger bench will come in handy.

Don't look so long term, you have a WC before week 16 so all that matters is points to your first WC which will probably be week 8 or sooner.

I agree. Will there be a significant score difference between these choices up to, lets say, GW8?

If you aren't going to captain Kane then I wouldn't suggest getting him.
As for option B I think you are spending a little too much on the bench and Sancho needs upgrading to one of the many £8m options...unless you think he outscores them.

          1. banskt
            • 10 Years
            1 year, 9 months ago

            Thanks.

My top choices for 8m mids will be Mount and Diaz, both of whom are already in my team. Of the rest, I highly rate Saka and Maddison. I don't think Foden, Mahrez and Kulu will get enough gametime to justify their price tag. If they do, then I have to re-think.

So, that means, the choice left is between Sancho and Maddison. A couple of tricky fixtures for Maddison at the beginning makes me lean towards Sancho, but the other would be a perfectly fine option.

If you aren't ever going to captain Kane then you must have Salah + potentially 4 x £8m mids...that doesn't leave much for a defence.

                • 10 Years
                1 year, 9 months ago

Why do I must have Salah? I need the highest scoring player in the game for my captain.

Opinions differ and I don't want to argue about who will score more. But, as of now, I trust Haaland more than Salah. I know Salah is consistent and Haaland is classified as a forward reducing his points potential, but I still think he will outscore other players if fit.

But if you own Haaland you would captain Kane weeks 1 and 6 so your comment about not captaining Kane would be incorrect.

No, I will still captain Haaland. Can't trust Kane enough for captaincy, or I am a blind Haaland fan boy, whichever way you look at it.

He's easing him back in but doesn't mean he's not fit, he returned last season. He's already played their first preseason game and will likely play in this one, they only play one game each week until after GW4 so he'll have plenty of time to rest in those weeks. Tuchel said he's a great option to have "to start next season" with.

Will this unorthodox threemium end in tears or could it pay off?

    Meslier (Klaesson)
    TAA Laporte James Zinchenko (Justin)
    Salah Rashford Martinelli Bailey (Andreas)
    Haaland Kane (Greenwood)

Very very similar to a threemium I'm playing around with but with Cancelo over Laporte, Dalot over Zinchenko and Neco over Justin.

Can't decide on Rashford/Bailey or Bruno G/Neto in the mid though.

Also can't decide between this draft and my much safer two premium draft

The first ever forward who will reach 40 PL goals will score approx 260 points, assuming no other attacking returns. Say 34 appearances, that will be 228 points. Add the bonus points and remove the yellow cards / penalty misses, say approx 30 points -- total will be approx 260 points.

That will still be less than 265 points scored by Salah last year. And, way below the 300 points scored by Salah in 2017-18. That's how skewed the point system is for midfielders and forwards!

      What about the assists?

Suarez scores 31 goals and got 295 points when he was listed as a striker...and he missed the first 5 games.

He got 25 assists that season.

He got 12. I'm sure he didn't get 13 fantasy assists

It's a fact that he got 25 assists in FPL that season...

You are correct. My initial source was wrong. Wow that's a lot of assists.

He was unreal that season, averaged 8.9 points per game. He was permanent captain no matter the opposition.

Suarez that season was beyond anything that I have ever seen. No matter the opposition, there was never a doubt captaining Suarez. Same with Salah in 2017-18.

To answer your above question, I find it easier to jump on the captain train early and have a single captain all over the season -- no matter the opposition.

Any striker that can score 40 goals will get 5-10 assists just from rebounded shots

      Kane got 29g& 2a and scored 217
      Ings got 198 fron 22g&2a

Total would be closer to 300 just with the extra goals and bonus

Yes, of course 10 assists will bring him closer to 300 because of the extra 30 points. But my point was, scoring enough goals is not enough for forwards to score highly in FPL.

Well the premium forwards are priced cheaper than the mids this season probably for that reason.

He'll get a hell of a lot more than 30 bonus and don't forget the assists. Will probably be more than 300 points with 40 goals
