How to stop FPL ruining your weekend

For most of us Fantasy managers, we’ll have to endure a bad Gameweek or three over the course of a season. Community writer shaun_drift discusses six ways to help stop Fantasy Premier League (FPL) from spoiling your weekend.

Whatever your rank history, if you’re visiting this site, chances are that you take FPL seriously, which means you will have spent many a weekend checking team sheets, goals, assists and every other stat that can earn or deny you the only thing that really matters – points.

Since I started playing in 2009/10, I have never finished higher than 67k, so clearly, I’m nowhere near an elite manager and can relate to most managers playing the game.

It can be extremely demoralising to be on the end of a big red arrow, but it’s even harder to take when you have put hours of your time into reviewing stats, reports and watching games.

When the pandemic bit hard and we had the mid-season break, I found it particularly tough to take when everyone was handed a free Wildcard, having deployed mine right before football stopped. This led to a real lack of enjoyment and despite achieving my highest points tally ever, it didn’t translate into a particularly good ‘OR’. The ill feeling of an impending red arrow or missed opportunity can affect many people outside of the game. It has drastically changed my mood before, which is completely unfair on those around me, and in the past I’ve even found it take some enjoyment out of football supporting.

In prior years, having won my mini-league, I felt the sense of achievement was wiped out immediately after the final games were played and I even felt empty because the season was over. I had ruined the game for myself by focusing too much on the negatives and not enough on the positives, to an extent where even the major positive of winning my mini league didn’t feel all that great.

I considered taking a season off to see how I felt about FPL and football afterwards, but honestly, I wasn’t ready to give it up completely. However, I knew that I had to change something to stop it affecting my mood and also so that I actually enjoyed it again.

Since the start of last season I made an effort to be a lot more positive about the game and I’m glad to say, I was able to get the enjoyment back and did not allow the game to ruin my weekends!

Simon March has contributed some excellent articles to this site about our FPL mindsets and how to try and avoid the above feelings. I won’t claim to have anywhere near his intelligence in this field, but wanted to share the changes I have made towards playing, in a bid to try and help anyone who has lost enjoyment or find it affects them negatively beyond the game itself.

1. Set a modest target

There is a lot of focus on the top 10k, but to put that in context, that was the top ~0.0011% of all players last season. Try setting a target that you would be happy with and not focus on what everyone else is aiming for.

2. Don’t compare yourself to elite managers

If you struggle with the feeling of lagging behind others, just avoid it. It takes time to improve your game, so compare yourself to players around your rank or in your mini-leagues. I found playing my own way and not getting drawn into what others are doing is much more enjoyable.

3. Stay off social media or decide when to interact

There is no doubting the wealth of information and excellent content creators on social media. But I found I was spending too much time reading lots of information from multiple sources, that it ended up confusing me most weeks. Post deadline I would read the success stories, compounding my misery if I’d had a bad week. If you struggle with the same, consider waiting a day or two until the attention turns to the next Gameweek.

I usually limit my reading and listening to Fantasy Football Scout and one podcast a week nowadays. I appreciate this won’t be for everyone and that interacting with the community is part of the enjoyment. I have found though that my decision-making is much clearer now, and the result is that I feel better when my decisions pay off, and not as bad when they don’t, because I know I made the decisions based on my own theories or accepted risks.

4. Don’t beat yourself up

Shocking revelation: FPL involves luck! Putting the sarcasm aside, it is important to remember this. If you’ve spent a lot of time looking into various data sets and assessed a lot of options, you are bound to miss a haul here and there. Don’t blame yourself if you went with one player over another and missed out: if there was a solid reasoning for doing so, it was probably just bad luck that week.

5. Check the results once, at the end of the day

The impulse to check on the scores every five minutes can be strong, especially when your captain is playing. You may enjoy it this way, but I have found I prefer to get one update at the end of the day’s football. If it’s a bad week I find out in one go, quickly process it and move on. If it’s a good week then great! Waiting until all the football has finished actually brought back some enjoyment for me, as the anticipation become stronger across each day.

6. Start afresh each week

This is perhaps a bit obvious, but each Gameweek is a new opportunity. Good or bad, put last week behind you and consider the best way to maximise from here. Getting hung up on what went wrong led me to poor decision making and a sense of pressure to get it right this week.

I know not everyone will relate to this, but hopefully it will help some of you as I know from experience, it’s possible to be excited for and apprehensive about the new season! Keeping our mental health in check is important. If anyone wants/needs to talk across the season, I’m @lightspeed65 on Twitter. Just don’t ask me for team advice… it won’t help!

I like the look of Leeds first half. What do we think of Aaranson?

Obviously, Rodrigo plays higher up the pitch and got the points but he wasn't starting and might lose minutes to Bamford once he is back. Aaranson is on corners and free kicks and nearly had an assist.

I guess is he better than Neto is a better question?

Rodrigo has been playing alongside Bamford in the first 2 games, just Bamford came off for an injury Vs Southampton.

Aaronson the more nailed and probably the better long term pick, but while Rodrigo is in form he should stay in the team.

Rodrigo more at risk from rotation Vs Aaronson, Harrison, James, Sinistera, Summerville, Klich, Gelhardt

On paper I think it's true but Rodrigo is a favourite of Marsch, I don't think he'll be dropped easily especially in his form. I think he, Aaronson and Harrison should be fairly safe, Aaronson in particular given his versatility (Marsch even mentioned trying him out as a false 9 at some point), I know room has to be made for Sinisterra but he hasn't looked great in the games he's played so I don't think he immediately dislodges anyone there.

Why overthink it. Rodrigo the form player. It's probably only short term to the WC anyway and goals are better than assists.

Leeds look like a different team to last season. There's no way Rodrigo loses his place on current form.

Aaronson is ok for the bench but I'm not sure I'd want to play him every week, regardless of his set-piece duties.

Aaronson has only scored 3 points from 2 games, may get rid after GW3.

Has been quite unlucky though, if not for Ait-Nouri just a nick ahead of him he could have ended up with 10pts against Wolves and I didn't see MOTD yet but someone here said for one of Rodrigo's goals yesterday he tapped in a shot / cross that was going in on the line, but if he didn't touch it Aaronson would have had the assist. Points will come

Dropping Cancello is not good as I believe you need some City defence coverage. Not so sure Brighton will keep scoring so Gross i would shift to a Leeds mid.

Thanks alot. That's why I brought in Walker as City coverage. True about Gross but I think he is on pens from now on, could see him as a good differential.

Gross can be easily changes if needed to any of the firing cheaper mids, so not really a problem. Can you move Gross up to Rodrigo whilst Bamford is crocked? needs extra 0.5 but can't see where from :(.

Your current team is very good. Stick with it. Seems like you're ripping up your whole team primarily to get Darwin. Wait for more information. Diaz could easily outscore Darwin this week

        • 7 Years
        1 year, 8 months ago

        Yeah, true about that.

With the current information, I just feel I'm too heavy in the back and the cheaper options would give me as many points, so I'm able to move some funds further up the pitch.

Would like to catch these before all the price rices kicks in.

Diaz/Nunez I would evaluate during this week.

        Thanks for the reply.

As per another reply I wouldn’t WC. Your existing team is decent and can be refined with 3/4 transfers over the next few weeks. Only those who made fundamental errors or want to completely change formation should contemplate a WC after GW2. Nunez could start and blank today

O.K. - So doing average but think I need to make a big change if to get ahead of the pack (at least for a while, lol:)). Seen enough now I believe to make a decent W.C. with a good chance of success. Herd reckon W.C. around week 8 and the international break, but i don't see that many fixture swings i would want to jump upon, at least not at present other than perhaps WHAM.

Most will still I reckon want max "coverage" for Pool, City, Arsenal, Chelsea and spurs. Can easily using frees make any adjustments in that regard if the Team set up is flexible.

W.C. below. Please feel free to discuss ;).

    Ederson - Ward

Zinc, James, TAA , Cancello - Patterson

Martinelli, Kulu, Diaz, - AAronson, Dasilva.

Haaland (likely perma cap) Jesus, Darwin

    Playing 4 - 3 - 3

As Haaland likely to be perma cap have decided to drop Salah and redistribute funds.

Can easily move the 8.0 mids to others which will be most likely where the changes will be needed or straight swaps for defenders depending on fixtures.

Please explain? - Kulu could be rotated but is currently one of Spurs best players in that mid/attack. Like i said can be transferred to another mid 8.0ish player at any time, perhaps Mount if Chelsea start firing or Bowen for Whams run.

Zinc again an easy downgrade to Saliba if still want Arsenal defence coverage or across to any 5.1 or below defender.

What are these unknowns please? I think the general theme is already developing here and Like i said want to try and get ahead. A lot of players will be trying to get Darwin in soon which if keeping the now almost essential Jesus and Haaland will require some major changes to team structure.

Something has to give/change. The Template is just set so strong that to move upward is going to need some differentials in structure and players. of course can all go horribly wrong too.

I fully understand no Salah is a big risk and tried Son but again without likely (C) then just takes up to much £ per points to make worthwhile, in my opinion at least :).

I'm thinking similar, the no salah does concern me but hoping triple city and triple pool cover that. Was thinking:

      Mendy
Robbo, cancelo, cucurella, tomiasu - neco
Diaz, Kdb, Martinelli - dasilva, andreas
      Haaland, Darwin, Jesus

Would swap mendy and tomi to Doherty and sanchez if I thought Doherty was due to start soon. Looking for 10/11 players from likely top 5 teams.

      Nice article, thanks

Re: Top 10K, it's by no means 0.0011% of players. It's about 0.15% (more than a 100 times more). So definitely not -that- difficult to reach, though difficult

Bit early but who are you looking at for captaincy next week? Jesus is probably the prime candidate but I've had Nunez as my choice so far, given how atrocious ManUtd defend their box and the number of chances he tends to get I'm not sure I can pass that chance by. Although if he's still on the bench tomorrow maybe I'll have to reconsider.

Jesus, seems like such a good call. But i really cant look past Salah with how bad Utd are. Low morale, and Pool could have a field day

I had 17 different players that I captained last season but still think I did well with them (got 7+pts in 30GWs) so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised I'm trying something different again after going with the most selected option for the last 2 weeks and with my team still being a bit templatey excepting Aaronson, Saliba, Dasilva and Raya (and even then Dasilva and Saliba have gone from just over 1% and under 1% in GW1 to over 5% already). How are you getting on so far mate?

Not too bad considering the Son/Salah swing last week. 63pts GW1, 57 this week with Son, Mount, Trent & Darwin to play

Really happy with my team though, especially starting with the now coveted Haaland/Darwin/Jesus frontline & watching everyone ditch their Spurs to get this while I still have Son

A tipster that does a few out-there tips last season said he thought Liverpool would beat ManUtd at OT 5-1 I remember, got a lot of stick for it beforehand but certainly did his work. Made a little bit myself betting against ManUtd yesterday and think I'll be joining you in doing the same again next week

Makes me laugh when ex-players and pundits talk about how bad the Glazers are and the poor Man Utd fans. These were the same people who were telling Newcastle fans that they should be happy with Ashley.

The likes of Rio Ferdinand and plenty of football writers said it. Rio was getting some reminders last night from Newcastle fans retweeting some of his past comments.

Rio's always defended Mike Ashley. If I didn't know better I'd say he had his own lines of merch and business connections with the man.

John Barnes on Ashley: “Newcastle fans are obviously going to know more than me, but from the players they’ve bought, the money they’ve spent and the salaries they’ve paid then it seems as if football fans are just hard to please."

Rio Ferdinand on Ashley: ‘It’s his club and he’s doing what he wants to do. Whether you like it or not, he’s the one that’s put the money up and he’s doing what he thinks is right for the club. Whether the Geordies don’t like it…A lot of them hate him and don’t like him but…Round your money up and take over the club then.’

“Check the results once at the end of the day” would mean FPL was ruining football for me.

My favourite bit of the weekend is the 3pm kick offs - wouldn’t miss that just in case my player didn’t score.

Random tip: Don’t captain AND vice captain a Liverpool player at Old Trafford next week. If United fans riot and cause the game to be postponed, you may end up with no captain.

      Allison
      Patterson, walker, Zinc, williams, Valery
Martinelli, salah, KDB ,andreas, da silva
      Jesus, Darwin, haaland

Pretty fixed 9/11, rotate cap between 3 prem or forwards depending on form/fixture (Darwin in instead of TAA as Allison covering pool defence)

Nice article with some very nice tips.

One thing that I find good is doing the MOTD challenge. I find that I can waste large chunks of Saturday with my head buried in the phone checking scores, reports, blogs, FFS etc. Putting away the phone and forgetting about FPL until 22:20 is quite refreshing. It's a nice way to watch a bit of football without it taking over your weekend.

Another thing I find myself doing more this season is playing my own game. While I enjoy listening to The Wire and in particular Blackbox, I find it less and less rewarding following advice and/or going with the template team. Probably the worst feeling in FPL is when you go against your gut to follow advice or to follow the template/EO and it doesn't work out. Similarly the best feeling is when a player you identify yourself does well. I find that making my own decisions and having 'ownership' of my team has a high floor, high ceiling effect on my enjoyment of the game.
