FPL new signings: Who is Brentford midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard?

Saturday evening saw Manchester United’s Christian Eriksen (£6.5m) make a quick return to Brentford, only to be shellshocked with a 4-0 half-time deficit that didn’t improve by its conclusion.

Watching from the sides was unused Bees substitute Mikkel Damsgaard (£5.5m), a fellow Danish international whose arrival in west London was confirmed last Wednesday.

The £10.1m attacking midfielder joins the many Danes already at Brentford, so where does he fit in at Thomas Frank’s side and what impact will he have in Fantasy Premier League (FPL)?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions below.

THE HISTORY

Damsgaard is one of many exciting young talents to have emerged at FC Nordsjælland over recent times, alongside new Brentford colleague Mathias Jensen (£5.0m).

SeasonTeamDivisionAppsGoalsAssists
2021/22SampdoriaSerie A1100
2020/21SampdoriaSerie A3524
2019/20NordsjællandSuperliga35116
2018/19NordsjællandSuperliga3217
2017/18NordsjællandSuperliga1713

His third season of first-team football was outstanding, netting 11 times and setting up six more to ensure he was next off the production line. Italian side Sampdoria secured his services for the 2020/21 campaign.

The link between Damsgaard and Eriksen began in the summer of 2021 when, on the second day of Euro 2020, Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during the match with Finland. Whilst recovering in hospital, in came Damsgaard as his replacement in the starting XI for the remainder of the tournament.

After a wonderful strike against Russia, he was responsible for a very scary moment experienced by England fans. It was his free-kick that put the Danes 1-0 up in the Wembley semi-final, although Gareth Southgate’s side eventually emerged as victors.

Shortly after, his career was put in jeopardy by an unfortunate series of injuries back at Sampdoria. Initially ruled out in October 2021 with a thigh injury picked up on international duty, he then underwent knee surgery and later discovered that he had a worrying arthritis condition.

“It was a very aggressive form of arthritis. There was no improvement, it felt like it was never going to heal, but thanks to the collaboration between Italian and Danish rheumatologists, a new therapy was designed and gave an excellent response.” – agent Jens Orgaard

Thankfully, he returned to action in April of this year but only managed to gather 576 minutes of game time over 11 league appearances.

PLAYING STYLE

It’s therefore easy to assume that Damsgaard is a similar player to Eriksen, making this a like-for-like replacement. However, this is not the case.

Whilst Eriksen is more of a passer with set-piece strengths and great vision, Damsgaard likes to dribble and isn’t afraid to get stuck into the defensive duties. The Athletic have specifically looked at this comparison.

Damsgaard is more of a traditional winger than central attacking midfielder. He likes to receive the ball by the touchline down his team’s left flank on his right foot, which opens up space for him to drive inside towards goal.

This ability to drive at opponents and dribble past them contrasts with the skill set of Eriksen, who prefers to dictate play from deep with his passing.

Additionally, his new team scored the second-fewest goals from outside of the box, meaning Damsgaard’s penchant for long-range stunners will add a new dimension to the line-up.

WHERE DAMSGAARD FITS IN AT BRENTFORD

As Yoane Wissa (£5.5m) and fellow new signing Keane Lewis-Potter (£5.5m) also favour the left flank, perhaps Frank has a different idea for this versatile player.

He himself is a head coach who often switches between a four-man and three-man defence, with both systems already used during these opening two matches.

“We think Mikkel can play as one of our ‘eights’ in a 4-3-3 system or as a ‘ten’. He can also play on the wing. We will use him in the way we think we can get the best out of his offensive abilities. Importantly, he is a player that will fit into our dressing room. He is a great character, he wants to work hard, he wants to work for the team, and he wants to develop.” – Thomas Frank

When combining Damsgaard’s injury-plagued 12 months with the excellent midfield starts for both Jensen and Josh Dasilva (£4.6m), there could definitely be an easing-in process for the 22-year-old.

Yet the introduction of such an exciting signing could also put off potential Dasilva purchasers. Some will just be happy to use Dasilva as a bench option whose imminent double-rise will increase squad value but, beyond that, frequent starts cannot be guaranteed.

IS DAMSGAARD WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

Managers should at least wait until they’ve seen Damsgaard make his first start. If it happens quickly, he’ll be a strong differential option when considering Brentford’s brilliant run of fixtures.

Starting from Gameweek 3, they top our Season Ticker all the way up to Gameweek 16.

Furthermore, he joins Pascal Gross (£5.6m), Brenden Aaronson (£5.5m), Joe Aribo (£5.5m) and Pablo Fornals (£5.5m) at the ideal price point for those intending to replace Pedro Neto (£5.5m).

Damsgaard is brother of Odegaard, and therefore son of Aeroguard.

Trap of epic proportions. Red and yellow cards is what he is known for.

Oh well, I went for him last night. Didn't trust Bailey to not drop. Saw the quotes about him having attacking license. In a team that should score plenty. Third Arsenal spot but so be it. Would have had Rice if he hadn't missed.

That was a rough end to the GW, had TAA and Salah (like most, but a lot in my MLs didn't have them or both) and Nunez and thought I could make a jump on a few people and end up way further away and needing to take a hit unless I decide to just leave getting rid of Nunez until next week.

Is everyone replacing / has everyone already replaced Nunez with Toney then? I saw he was rising last night but wasn't too sure on him, Brentford have looked good so far but they've played two poor defences and with Fulham, Everton and Palace in their next 3 I don't see too many goals, Welbeck is tempting me far more given how good Brighton were against Newcastle and with West Ham next (who look poor and haven't beaten Brighton for years) and then Leeds, and then Leicester and Bournemouth after Fulham. Anyone looking at a different replacement?

Its a tricky one. I have enough itb to get Vardy but he hasn't registered a single shot yet. Want to watch Brighton v Newcastle before I decide but its probably either Welbeck, or Darwin - Plange, Andreas - Diaz

I can afford Vardy too, gave it a very brief thought given the fixtures this week but even if he returns they have Chelsea next week so I think I'll pass especially given his underlyings

Will be interesting to see the effect that new signing Sergio Gomez has on the Man City backline...

It is unlikely he will start with Cancelo preferred at LB and Walker essential at RB, however with 5 subs it could work nicely.

I can see Walker being subbed and Cancelo going to RB to give Gomez time on the left.

I wonder what price he will be, surely will be 4.5? or maybe even 4.0...

He will be 4.5 but won't be a viable FF asset.

agreed, probably not this season unless Walker is benched and Cancelo switches to RB but I can't see that happening tbh

He will get minutes though, although he isn't worthy of the fifth defender spot I don't think

Not really, his pace is vital for the way we play, when Cancelo is inverted into midfield or practically playing on the wing he often has to be quick to eliminate any threat which he does really well

    2ft and 0.0itb

    Sanchez
    TAA Robbo Cancelo Neco
    Salah Mount Martinelli Pereira*
    Haaland Jesus

    Ward; Neto, Trippier, Archer

Thinking Robbo -> James. That would leave me with an extra 1m. Should I use that to make Trippier -> Dias, upgrade Neto or leave in the bank and save the other ft?

    Ward (Sanchez)
    TAA Robertson Cancelo James (Trippier)
    Salah Marti Dasilva Andreas (Bailey)
    Haaland Jesus (Archer)

    2.0 in bank and 1ft

Thinking of Robertson and Bailey to Walker and Maddison..Go for it??

Aaronson owners have been the most unluckiest so far.

GW1: His tap in was stolen by the opposing defender for an own goal and he got no points for the goal

GW 2: His assist was stolen since Rodrigo decided to steal a goal that was already on the way in and in doing so negated aaronson's assist from the corner

That being said Aaronson has been super exciting to watch...really looks like a proper raphinha replacement. I would go as far to say that he is the best FPL attacker under 6 million at the moment. One of the few nailed on wingers available at that price(also on corners).

Can't see Leeds doing much at Chelsea so I'm hoping he suffers a price drop so i can pick him up at 5.4 next week 🙂 .. That 5.5 bracket offers nice fallback options in Neto, Eze, Damsgaard/Da Silva, Gordon, KDH too incase Aaronson doesn't work out

Good to hear. Really considering him as a Neto replacement for gw4.

Tbh Neto looked good last game too. Leeds look a lot better vs wolves going forward though. Both of those will provide value and cover for each other for that 5.5 spot nicely(and eze too)

I'm happy to own him though. I'll bench him for Chelsea and then give him a good run. Hope he remains my major differential for some time.

I'm getting him in post Chelsea. He looks absolutely fantastic. I'd say he ll be Leeds highest points scorer this season based on how instrumental he has been. Every time he gets the ball he looks dangerous. The only thing he is missing vs raphinha is penalties .. so i can't see him ever matching raphinhas scores.

True, but he's not Raphinha's price. Alongside Salah and Martinelli, I think he completes a tidy midfield.

True. Currently weighing up a midfield of
Salah Zaha Martinelli Aaronson Andreas.. Aaronson covers zahas tougher fixtures nicely and can come in place of my 4.5 defender (saliba) too whenever fixtures don't favor. Perfect price point to act as a cover for my team

Btw I'm not dissing him by saying he won't match raphinha.. all I'm saying is he won't reach the heights of raphinha. Going to have a great season though.

Oh sure, I don't expect him to - just to overperform for a 5.5m, 2% owned differential!
Your proposed midfield looks good, btw.

Cheers. Somehow after a decade of playing i feel safer owning a zaha vs a Kulu/Diaz etc. There's some comfort there. I can hold zaha for a run of 14 games if needed even if he blanks in 5 in a row since I know what he can offer. Since I'm on WC I'm just looking at comfort picks so i stop chasing points and value lol.

Cheers. Would've been a huge bandwagon by now if his goal was credited(post match he confirmed he touched it) and if Rodrigo wasn't being selfish(though that is his job) and headed a ball and that was almost over the line lol

Yeah I'm happy to have him and to play him this week, Chelsea still don't look very convincing defensively so I think he can trouble them, and Leeds being at home will likely drive them to have a go (not that they didn't do that at Southampton)

Everytime I go 5 at the back i remember how much value neco provides and i downgrade one of them to him. He is the perfect FPL player.. 4.0 and on most set pieces + plays high up as an attacking WB + killer delivery from open play.

Another way of looking at it is apart from the keepers, it's a damn fine squad. Just roll with it until someone gets injured, sent off or loses form.

Up the Palace (sorry got too drunk to come on here last night!) 🙂

I have been saying this for a while but after GW4 if you are looking for a 5.5m Eze (or Olise when fit) could be your man . More than a assisted but on all set plays at the moment

Eze was injured most of last year due to tearing his Achilles and was playing to get match fitness. He is back again now.

Eze has been class in pre-season, and that assist is showing he is coming back to the player why we signed him in the first place

    1. Valar(Keith)
      • 14 Years
      1 year, 8 months ago

Yup. He is my backup in that 5.5 mid spot alongside Aaronson, Neto and Eze. I like all of them and each one can be replaced with the other. If i wasn't obsessed with going zaha I'd go with eze for sure.
