How the top 10k FPL managers set their teams up for Gameweek 8

Tottenham Hotspur’s trip to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday afternoon will play a massive role in how Gameweek 8 plays out among the highest-ranking Fantasy Premier League managers.

Harry Kane (£11.0m) and Son Heung-min (£9.6m) come into the latest round of action heavily backed by the top 10,000, especially for the captain’s armband.

As you can see from the pie chart below, Spurs’ talismanic striker, who scored his 200th club goal in 300 appearances on Thursday, is the skipper for 66% of managers at this level.

That means for the third week in a row, the top 10k have handed Kane considerably more support when compared with Fantasy Football Scout readers, in terms of proportion.

In our latest captain poll (don’t worry, we have counted all the votes now), just 39% said they would be backing Kane with the armband, representing a lead of 18.2 percentage points over Son.

That lead widened to 46.4 percentage points when we considered only managers in the top 10k, who have only handed 19.6% captaincy backing to the South Korean.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah (£12.4m), Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) and Timo Werner (£9.4m) complete the top five skippers at this level for Gameweek 8 but each one of them is very much a differential in comparison to Spurs’ dynamic duo.

As ever the top 10k more emphatic in their backing for Kane than compared to the rest of the world.

The Spurs striker is, indeed, the most fashionable skipper, despite still being on lower overall ownership (45.2%) than Son (60.3%), chosen as captain by 2,060,781.

However, that still only represents 31% of worldwide managers, only 7.7 percentage points ahead of Son, who 1,503,449 managers chose as skipper in Gameweek 8.

With so many armbands handed to Spurs players, their effective ownership in the top 10k is particularly ominous this weekend.

Kane stands at 154.7% while Son is also over 100% with an effective ownership figure of 106.9%.

In total, 74.9% of the top 10k own both of these players for Gameweek 8, a somewhat worrying statistic for the 25.1% who don’t.

That said, considering these two titans of the top 10k both face Manchester City in Gameweek 9, it will be interesting to see how these managers respond to the shift in fixtures.

It is in defence where we see the biggest shifts in the top 10k ownership template.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) has been slipping down the pecking order for some time at this level and Gameweek 8 proved to be when he finally dropped out of the top five defenders.

The Liverpool man was in 24.9% of top 10k teams for Gameweek 7, that figure decreasing to 17.1%.

We see a similar story with Romain Saïss (£5.2m), who managed to become the most popular defender at this level last time out, only to be replaced at left-back by Rayan Aït-Nouri (£5.0m).

The top 10k have responded accordingly, shrinking his ownership among them from 35.9% to 26.4%.

Ben Chilwell (£5.9m) has clearly been a chief beneficiary of those who did not vote Romain, quickly rising to become the most fashionable defender in the top 10k, up 8.3 percentage points on his Gameweek 7 backing.

A 14-point haul against Burnley has helped Kurt Zouma (£5.3m) creep into the top five, the top-scoring FPL defender now owned by 23.1% of the top 10k.

With so many transfer focussed on putting out fires in defence, the midfield and forward positions have remained largely stable, with the same eight attackers featuring in this template in Gameweek 8 as we saw in Gameweek 7.

The exception to that was a massive shift towards owning Jack Grealish (£7.4m). He was in the top-five midfielders last time out, but only just, with 35.7% ownership in the top 10k. His 15-point haul against Southampton was enough to increase that by 22.2 percentage points.

The Wildcard remains the most heavily-used chip among top 10k managers this season, the number of deployers now up to 42.7%.

However, for the first time in 2020/21, the Triple Captain was the most popular of the Gameweek, 2.5% of the top 10k pulling the trigger.

Almost all of these managers trusted Kane with the enhanced armband with 0.3% of the top 10k using it Son, 0.07% on Werner and 0.03% on Salah.

As we hit the half-way stage of the first Wildcard period, the next one available from Gameweek 17 onwards, 39.2% of the top 10k are still yet to use a single chip.

Am I the only one looking at spurs fixtures and thinking they actually aren't bad? I'd consider other options for Son but can't see why anyone would want to drop Kane. He loves scoring in London derby's, Man city game is tough but then its Chelsea/ Ars and CP, all teams he loves scoring against? Not seeing whats bad to be honest, 100% keeping.

Folk get confused. The chances of top teams scoring well against each other are still quite good....it’s the defenders we don’t want.

Parking the bus teams ruin many a “good run”.

Do top teams not have better defenders too?
I'd say that's the case for LIV and MCI when they've been a top team.

I don't have stats to back it up, but I feel like some teams, particularly Mourinho, aim for 0-0 when it's top teams facing off. The idea of the game being worth '8 points' is probably why.

Nobody thinks they are bad options going forward. But they're not players you are going to captain in those fixtures. Meanwhile you have City who have Fulham and Burnley and you're definitely going to want KDB and/or Sterling as captain options those weeks and it's hard to find room for all of that + Kane or Son. At least one of them has to go - and for me it's likely Kane because I think Son offers slightly more value.

Understand your point from captaincy point of view. However, I have Kane+Son+Kdb already so can cap kdb. May move son to Rashford. But I would genuinely still consider kane cap vs. Arsenal and Palace. So thats only 2 gws, if were considering city and Chelsea, then I'd want him straight back, seems a waste of transfer and value personally.

...and there’s the problem...What will Fulham and Burnley do when they play City?

What we need to see is how often these easiest games marerialise into the goal rests we expect...I think we may be disappointed on the whole with the results.

City scored 5+ goals seven times in the league last season (NOR, bha, NEW, BUR, avl, WAT, whu). All of those were against the bottom 11 (so out of 22 chances to play those teams). That's a 32% chance that any given fixture against that type of opposition will produce 5+ goals.

The post is about Spurs up coming fixtures. I’m only using that as an example of what the lower teams do. We can’t forget that we’ve been laughing at the quality of the City, Chelsea and Arsenal defences (Spurs next three). Just because the lower teams concede goals doesn’t by default make the better teams water tight against Spurs,

For me, holding Spurs is an impediment to being able to captain a player against WBA or Fulham every week. I need assets from the other good teams to be able to do this.

I think the early bonkers results where top-6 teams conceded lots of goals are over. City/Chelsea/Arsenal are currently three of the best defences in the league, hence why people are buying defenders like Cancelo, Chilwell, Bellerin, etc.

Spurs don't have mids like KdB, Mahrez, and Silva to move thru the parked bus. KdB is undeniably valuable against those teams and generally is Citys top scoring player.

No Aguero and no Jesus will do that to you. As long as they have one of those available, things will revert to normal.

They haven't exactly had the easiest run of games so far though. 4 teams that finished in top 8 then Sheffield United who were great defensively last season (also finished top half) + despite having a bad start defensively this season have improved there - and West Ham who we all know have looked fantastic this year and could be a top 8 contender this year.

Most likely GW19. With City and United having advanced to the next round of the League Cup, there aren't any free midweeks before then.

Not trolling, curious, why did you FH this week? If its because you've been on bad run and are letting that affect your decisions sometimes its best to take a step back and just leave your team awhile and give it 3weeks instead of 1 to decide. Hope your FH team does well, but you will have missed large potential points gains later in the season in a blank or double gw when FH is perfect for.

been on a bad run since start of last season, this game isn't what it used to be ata ll, used to be fun. I used FH to cancel and wipe a large rage points hit, and to hopefully gain some ground on the luckiest rivals ever in my ML's. I've taken steps back, been patient and nothing changes. Really don't know how seasoned elites do well season after season, when all i do is the same as them and follow the right approaches.
I agree with you i'll probs miss out later on when FH is needed, but hopefully it won't affect too much, and won't matter much anyway if things don't do well this week as i'll of already quit 🙂

Dont need to quit, or maybe a break would actually be helpful.. but don't let emotions dictate decisions, thats all. You get frustrated other teams have been lucky, your team had a bad week etc, and you want to rage transfer or use a chip - 90% of the time that will lose points. Looking at your last weeks team, it actually looks v.good, only would have swapped saiss to a diff def. Whats done is now though, try to focus less on other teams luck, and just focus on your own team and how the players are performing stat wise, even if they aren't getting fpl points if they are performing well just hold and it will work out. I've spent so many seasons knee-jerking and it pays off once in a blue moon and mostly fails. Its hard but the best consistent "pros" are just really patient, keep faith with their team and you can gain the biggest rewards like that

Honestly I would have a friend change your password so that you can't check for all of international break. Take a step bag and don't look at FPL at all and evaluate whether you want to keep playing and what you want from the game if you do. Those two weeks could be valuable and its not going anywhere before the next deadline.

This game is a fun free thing to do to waste a bit of time and follow the premier league and challenge your friends/family.

Imagine if a game of chess got to you
like this. You’d probably stop playing chess.

Just quit for a while or learn to laugh and realise how this game is meaningless in the grand scheme of your life.

Big hitters this week are Sterling, Werner, Ziyech(C). A massive chelsea victory and i'd be very pleased. Had triple saints already to give me a boost.

However the week I captained werner for 16 was the week Kane matched him and Son and returned twice as well effectively just keeping me at stasis. Now both are more highly owned and captained than even then.

Its exciting! Certainly nerve wracking though

that's not a lot of big hitters considering only one of those is more than 10m and some people have Kane, Salah and Sterling. I'm guessing you have a really heavy bench instead?

I sold Salah for Ziyech this week so curiously enough I have 5.4 ITB. Decided that I needed to really prep for GW 10 and I didn't want to use my wildcard.

Plan is GW 9: Adams > Richarlison, GW10: Trossard > Barnes, GW 11: Save, GW 12: Richarlison + Ziyech > Watkins + Salah

My intentions are to play the fixtures and still leave the door open for me to get Salah back when I believe he'll be essential again

Otherwise, DCL, Trent & Robbo are my only other players 7.0 or above for the time being

Keeping 5 mill plus in the bank is a baaaad move. You want your money ON THE PITCH at all times. If you ever have that much again, take a hit to spend it on a new starter.

I hear you but I think knowing what I want to do going forward i'm pleased with how its shaken out. I'll spend some of that next and the week after but as you see from my plans I really have no one that i'm targetting who is all that expensive. I'm .1 off of Trossard > KdB but then I miss out on adding Everton and Leicester for someone i'm not sure i'd captain over Sterling. I think this will strengthen my team in the long run and still give me a route back to Salah.

Fair play to your mostly non-template team! And brave ziyech cap, though werner is a slight rest risk so is the sensible choice. I have kane and son but honestly not expecting a demolition, West brom aren't mugs, they're not going to press high and attack spurs, they will sit deep and make it difficult. I'm just hoping for a cheeky kane goal and son assist tbh.

          1. Nice to Finally Michu
            • 10 Years
            3 years, 4 months ago

Yeah Werner at risk of rest made the choice easy for me, the only other choice was Raz. I think Timo probably does get the start tomorrow and if not I can still see him getting a return in 30.

Not sure how to feel about Kane & Son because i've seen a lot of West Brom as i've owned pereira until this week. Adding Ivanovic has meant they're more comfortable inviting pressure and sitting deep in the final third and Adding Grant instead of Robinson has meant the whole team plays ready to run on the counter with Grant being a very willing presser of the ball.
I'd be foolish to say I think their defense has a chance of keeping a cleansheet or allowing just a goal but I think they have a decent enough system and the players to execute it that they won't get turned over even if they lose. I think its not bad to keep expectations in check but best of luck for whichever way it does turn out and they absolutely could score very big!

Having watched the second half of the Saints match I was happily surprised to see KWP get all three bonus. His close control dribbling and intelligence in passing were really on display even if he wasn't going forward so much. Really impressive from Saints across the board

My team with 1ft & 0 bank. The zero bank limits my options to sell Mitchell & Burke. Plus I'd like to keep Justin for the gw10 fixture Ful (h) even though Pereira might be back then so he loses his spot.

    Martinez, Steer
    Robertson, Chilwell, Lamptey, Justin, Mitchell
    Salah, Son, Grealish, Zaha, Burke
    Kane, Jimenez, DCL

So my trade-out options are Robertson, Son, Kane & Jimenez & I'm actually thinking of saving my ft in gw9 so I can do:
Robertson, Jimenez out - Cancelo/Dias, Vardy in

Do you like this plan & if you don't what do you suggest. Thoughts & thanks.

Honestly i'm not the biggest fan of your getting rid of Robertson, especially not that week - from GW 10 through 18 Robertson has set and forget fixtures where you can reasonably expect consistent returns or hauls. If you were to get rid of a city player imo it was before this past week. I think now you would do well to keep but thats just my thought and I tend to play fixtures very heavily. For that reason i'd recommend losing Son or Kane to fund the Jimenez move. Something like Kane > Jesus, Jimenez > Vardy or Son > Hamez/Ziyech/Leicester or City Midpriced mid, Jimenez > Vardy

You have Kane how arguably scratches out Son. Both are regarded as non-essential because of their fixture. Salah is fine as a Captain choice for weeks, but it IS less options.

People just wanted an excuse to bring a Chelsea asset in and be a bit differential. He might be a good option but I'm mostly worried about the fact that Lampard still doesn't know what his best team is and that I don't think there is a talisman in the team - they just have a lot of very good players who are all capable of scoring and that's why despite Chelsea's free scoring form their points have been completely spread out.

I think he's a boom or bust kind of player. He's been great in UCL and for me is a high upside pick. Chelsea is playing some obliging defences in the next 6, Ziyech in the short term future is in the best 11 for Chelsea especially given no Pulisic or Havertz, on set pieces, and is a creative factor in the side.

Kind of reminds me of Hames at the start of the season

      1. Mile Plankton
        • 11 Years

It might work with him being on set pieces and with the lack of other creative players in Chelsea midfield. But their absence might actually mean more struggle for the team and I don't see Ziyech being the force such as Hames.

I watched him a bit in Ajax in past years. He transferred from an attacking wing player to a decent midfielder, but never fulfilled his full potential. It took him quite a while to leave Ajax.

He is a 27-year-old who played in a lot less physical league for past 5 years. I don't see him making a significant impact in Premier League.
I'd like to be proven wrong though. I liked him in Ajax.

Which move for a 1-week punt?

    A) Saiss to PVA/Telles(Otherwise have to play 1 of Saiss/Mitchell/Justin)

    B) Son to Rashford (C)

Should wait and see if Saiss plays this week, maybe he'll regain his spot.
      If so, I like B.
      Plan to get Rushford myself

If you're going to 1 week punt on someone then it better be someone that you can captain who might haul... so obviously B.

    Early thoughts for next GW.
    Barkley + Jimenez -> Grealish + Rich.

    Anything else standing out?
    McCarthy.
    TAA, Chilwell, Ayling.
    Salah, Barkley, Podence, Son.
    Kane, Jimenez, DCL.
    Button, Justin, Mitchell, Bissouma.
    2ft, 1.8m ITB.

It is still early with the break comming up. But this is my take.
I would be looking to ship Podence out, nevermind the fixtures.
Jimi out looks good as Soton are decent at the back.
Barkley -> Grealish is sideways move. I would stick with Ross. After watching Villa against Sotton I wasn't impressed with Grealish, he was pretty lucky at the end when the game was already over.

...finding it funny to see managers bigging up Che Adams (Championship player at best)

      That's just how it goes.
Last week it was Wilson, before that Watkins, Bamford.
I get frustrated when a player scores and 5 minutes later it looks like everyone's buying him for a hit.
That's why I brought up the subject of Ziyech. He seems to be in everyone's team after one start in PL.
And that's why I'm here only in the dead zone.

All are doing quite well till now this season. Points per million is very good. There is no point wasting transfer for them. It is just about choosing one and then set and forget for a good run of fixtures. Jumping between them will give less return.

All these guys are ultimately a headache - Adams, Bamford, Watkins, Mitrovic etc....
Need to jump between them constantly...

Just ignore is the right plan

Dropping double Saints defense for double Villa defense in WC is going well since last 3 weeks. Success stories! -_-

Moving away from double defense is better this season imo. Except for a huge attacking threat like Chilwell while having Mendy at goal.

There were three clean sheets in two matches yday. Defenses will firm up eventually i guess as teams settle in.
But yeah attacking WBs like Lamptey Creswell Chilwell offer great value. Only worthy double up i can think of at this point is Chilwell Zouma. Of course it may change over time.

As someone pointed out earlier, Liverpool's fixtures from gw10-18 are excellent. I have Robbo but was thinking about swapping him for Cancelo GW10. But looking at those fixtures it makes more sense to keep Robbo -better fixtures, more nailed- and I can still bring in Jesus & KDB as City cover.

I would still like to bring in Cancelo but the only way I can do it is by losing Chillwell which I'm not sure is sensible (bought at 5.5).

I'm thinking about a mid of Mane, Salah, Jota, KDB and Grealish plus city defence and very cheap up top

    Early thoughts...

    A) Soucek (shu) > Jota (LEI)
    B) Kane (MCI) > Vardy (liv)
    C) Son (MCI) > Rashford (WBA)
    D) Save & reassess with 2ft in GW10

        Hey TM,
The LMS table is showing ranking based on season score rather than GW score. I guess you haven't updated of yet?

Thanks for running the league once again.

          https://www.livefpl.net/LMS has the updated scores.
Given 2 low ownership games, I wanted to see how high and low the ranks were.
Clear leader by 41 points and 101st overall, last place is over 5m and took a -16 with these transfers.

          Wilson Ings
          Ziyech Trossard
          Chilwell Justin
          McCarthy Ryan
          Grealish Pulisic

          I'll change it back today.

Ended up Yolo'ing and getting Coufal and Ziyech for Saiss and Foden for a -4 hit, and also benching robbo.

The other option was Foden > Zaha/ Fornals and play Robbo (Bench Saiss). This was the unanimous choice when I asked here.

Time will tell, probably backfires lol. But feels good to play my own game.
