Why I am Wildcarding for FPL Gameweek 9 and the key players I am signing

My Fantasy Premier League Wildcard is now active and in this article I will be going through the list of players and teams I am targeting.

With eight Gameweeks now gone, I feel I have enough data to make an informed decision.

As I am using this so extensively, only those with a valid Fantasy Football Scout subscription can access it in full.

    Worth a WC? Got 2 FT's..

    McCarthy, Ryan
    TAA, Zouma, KWP, Justin, C.Taylor
    Salah, Son, JRod, Barnes, Klich
    Werner, Bamford, Jimenez

    Thoughts

Much better fixture swings in GW10 if you're just looking to max an advantage

Barnes and TAA to Grealish and someone

I wouldn't WC this team. Reckon I'd use one FT now and save the other for GW10 so you can do a mini wildcard when the fixtures really swing. What's your OR currently? Are you trying to make up a lot of ground or you doing ok?

Thinking of Wildcarding to something like this

    Martinez
    Lamptey KWP Targett
    Salah KDB Grealish
    Kane DCL

    4.0 Clyne Kilman Romeu

Got 14.8m for the last 2 spots. Who would you go for?

    1. BrockLanders
      • 9 Years

      Martial and Bowen?

      1. Bojam

Surely not Martial. He's done nothing in the PL yet this season and Utd are too unpredictable. I'd wait for some signs of consistent improvement before bringing him in. Werner on pens and in a decent Chelsea side looks a better shout if you want a forward in that price bracket.

Wilson to Bruno (& Brewster) for -8? Would give me:

    Martinez
    Chilwell Bellerin Coufal
    Salah Bruno Son Rodriguez Grealish
    Kane DCL

    Steer Brewster Mitchell Nico

    1. FPL Blow-In

Looks great. Not sure on the -8 though.

    2. Bojam
      • 6 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

Why take a -8? Rarely worth it in this kind of scenario as you don't expect anything from Brewster (right?). Hits like this can pay off but when they involve bringing in two strong players (or three if doing a mini wildcard) and often when you're shipping out an injured/banned player who won't return.

Who would you be losing in this proposed transfer?

Is having Chilwell, cresswell and Cancelo too expensive in defence? 3-5-2 formation most weeks!

            Masuaku 0.30 xGA/90
            Cresswell 0.21 xGA/90

Masuaku has good stats for sure but word on the street is that he's the most likely to be benched IF West Ham revert to a back four to accomodate Benrahma. I went Coufal for that reason and he returned 8 points last week. Worth considering.

Great read Zophar! on wildcard myself, 0,5 short for kdb, what do you think about Jesus instead? Probably a rotation risk when Augero is back, but he has looked good...

With aguero looming I'm not confident on Jesus, especially when so many budget forwards are doing the business

      1. Staavi
        • 3 Years
        3 years, 4 months ago

Cheers Zophar, that is a very good point.
A way to fund kdb would be to go with two 3,9 defenders, but it definitely feels risky. (Should have cared more about team value...) On the other hand I would most likely play Cancelo, Chilwell and Targett every week, although Mendy being back could be a problem if Cancelo gets rested.
        Any thoughts?

I may have it wrong but surely if ever there was a time to admit defeat and give up on Trent Alexander-Arnold it's now...

At £7.4m and the highest priced defender in the game, he isn't producing the highest points and after 8 GWs of data he's not even ranked in the top 20 of defenders and comes in with a paltry 21 points. A stingy 2.625 points per game 🙁

Yes, I know he has the ability to hurt if transferred out (currently in 26.6% of all teams) we all know that, but on current showing at that price and for what I think would be the better for my team, he's got to go...

So if you're (still) in the same position as me and looking to get rid, who (even considering his current injury status and the fact he may well be fit by the time the next fixtures come around), are you going to replace him with?

Turning to the Fixture Ticker over the next 5 GWs West Ham, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Newcastle all lead the way followed by Manchester City when sorted by defence difficulty. My problem is I'm not sure I want to double up on Newcastle assets, can never trust West Ham and already have Mitchel who may be another one to shift down the line and all four of those teams have an xGC over the past 4 weeks that doesn't exactly entice me in either.

The team I may be crazy at looking at is Manchester City. Next 5 show as tot, BUR, FUL, mun, and WBA which I think is a pretty decent run of fixtures and they have a very respectable 2.87 xGC over the last 4 GWs which is ranked 2nd best over all. Dias is probably the safe (if there ever is such a thing with a team managed by Pep!) option but I may just punt on bringing in Cancelo ahead of Mings to be honest...

Hammers do have a decent run coming up but I've never been one for picking fantasy assets from my own team to be honest, so I'll pass on Cresswell or Masuaku and cheer my team on from my armchair 😆

So who do you fancy as a Trent replacement and why?

    1. soup natsi
      • 9 Years

Going with Cancelo. He's racking up respectable attacking numbers and it's his spot to lose. With Zinchenko and Mendy as competition can't see him being dropped for some time.

Ah! Someone thinking along the same lines :O

I can 'stretch' to getting him in and still get a move like Maupay to Vardy or Stephens to Mahrez and double up on City assets for the upcoming run of fixtures...

I have Reguilon, Chillwell, Cresswell & Kilman as starting defenders. Reguilon will be moved on for maybe Dias after the next GW.

I think WHU fixtures can’t be ignored and with Antonio back soon there may be attacking points for a few if their more attacking defenders

      Dias or Cresswell

You make a good case for us Hammers, now if only I could get past my predjudices I'd move him up higher on my personal list but Mings just edges ahead of him for me, with Cancelo leading the way.

I suppose it boils down to your team, how it's set up and the players you fancy 🙂

Many of the popular options all seem like solid picks: Cancelo, Mings, Cresswell

Considering all the above are 5 million+, it’s hard to bet against Cancelo and Man City, if you can afford the odd rotation.

Another (inconceivable) option I’m considering is actually Harry Maguire.

United have the best defensive stats from the last 4 gws despite facing Arsenal, Everton, and Chelsea. He clearly has a point to prove and the fixtures are there

I'm not averse to the idea of Harry and well done on finding the team that beats Manchester City defensively (xGC) over the past 4 GWs too!

Over the next 5 United face WBA, sou, whu, MCI and shu, so yes, agree they have the opportunity in that run for some defensive returns.

You never know, he might get up for the odd corner or two...

For me its between Dias and Cancelo -
Cancelo is much more attacking but Dias should be nailed on.

What shifts it for me is how much more of a BPS magnet Cancelo is than Dias rendering optimistic comparisons between Dias and Laporte's FPL ppm of the last two years a bit moot. Dias and Laporte have similar goal threat any way although some have argued Laporte looks more dangerous from corners than Dias this season.

I can't get over how much Cancelo hogs BPS. Dias had no BPS in the CS against Arsenal, and arguments that it was because he received a yellow fall on deaf ears as Cancelo in that same match had a yellow as well and notched all 3 BPS with no goal involvement. Similar story in the CS against Sheffield where Cancelo only trailed in bonus to Walker who had the game winning goal and a cleansheet. Any Cancelo return and a cleansheet and he probably makes out with all 3 bonus and he probably gets at least two in a low scoring win with a cleansheet. If a center back can't get any bonus in 1-0 wins when will he? I don't expect many low scoring city wins with that run, i'm expecting some romps.

However, what might shift it back is the value in security for Dias. City's fixture list goes 11/21, 11/25, 11/28, 12/1, 12/5, 12/9, 12/12, 12/16, 12/19, 12/22, 12/26, 12/28, 1/2. A remarkable amount of congestion highlighted, for example, in those 4 matches in 10 days from 12/22 to 1/2. There, in all comps, city have ars(EFL quarters) NEW eve che. I'm sure we all want city assets for Newcastle at home but how many are going to play when two days later is everton away and just 4 days before was arsenal away in a cup competition Pep notoriously takes seriously.

I don't see Dias being rested much in this period and he might even benefit from a bonus perspective when Cancelo is rested as Dias is often the man missing out on receiving a bonus point in tight clean sheet wins. Neither Mendy nor Zinchenko are the same bonus threats as Cancelo.

To me the debate has to be considered on an individual level. Only you know how strong your bench is and how comfortable you are managing risk. How will you feel if Cancelo is dropped for Burnley or Fulham at home? Note that Cancelo with his high ceiling can punish non-owners, Dias is much more likely to tick along.

Some believe the spot is simply Cancelo's to lose. This argument is a far one as Cancelo is positionally versatile and more than held his own well in a game against Liverpool that last year we might have seen Pep play Zinchenko to add some defensive stability. The decision for Pep to rotate in Zinchenko and the likes of Ake and Stones for the UCL fixtures may mean that those currently second choice players could get runs out in the champions league where city have all but secured first in that group, as was expected of them. I think with Mendy back in training over this break that he (and Zinchenko) will play some role over the next 10-14 gameweeks.

It is not guaranteed that Dias is nailed on for all of the fixtures going forward although I expect Pep will want Laporte and Dias to build on their relationship and that any CB rotation might affect Laporte more to mitigate injury risk.

Both are good options and offer different things. They may even be the same price at 5.5 by the end of the week (or IB). Consider your appetite for risk vs how you value consistency. Furthermore, make sure to look at your bench options and note how confident you are over a 4.5/4.0 defender coming in for Cancelo in a fixture you had planned to bench the cheapie defender for.

        Thanks, what a great read!

For me, I have to roll the dice and if I have to choose between either it's got to be Cancelo. Yes Dias could prove more nailed but Cancelo takes it for me being the more attacking threat and that could prove vital on any given week.

Looking at the risk vs how I value consistency I would be more than happy for Lamptey to come off the bench any time to be honest, I could have done with his points recently too! Maybe GW10 would be a worry if Cancelo were to be rotated out for that Burnley game as it would see Lamptey come in playing Liverpool but YOLO so I'll go for it and maybe double up on City assets by bringing in Mahrez too...

Getting rid of Trent opens up so many avenues for my team as well as the above scenario I could look to bring in a Jamie Vardy to replace Maupay.

Plenty for me to think about, this could be a long International Break 😆

        Great read

        How about Ederson?

He will play every game and whilst expensive Man City are likely to get lots of clean sheets.

Wildcarders can then look at the numerous amount of good 4.5m options in defence.

Not a fan of premium priced keepers at all, I'd much rather have similarly priced defenders who can also bring attacking points, not just clean sheets.

My back line will likely be chilwell, cancelo, coufal, targett and Justin(currently have with value tied up in) or Dallas/ayling

I don't think you can go far wrong in turfing him out. Let's be honest, you're freeing up cash and bringing in a cheaper replacement who is out-performing him too.

Win win situation in my book!

Yeah those are decent picks. already have Chilwell who I had brought in for Digne after his red, and even though I am not, its good to see you willing to double up on Hammers assets. Hopefully it will pay off for you.

In fact, secretly I'm hoping it's so successful I can't help but joining in too 😉

      Have Coufal and Konsa already.

So, I went for a premium replacement in Chilwell. Most already have him, so I'm a bit late. Hopefully, he still continues his form.

Not "too risky" at all. You can't have them all so is it worth bringing him in for one week against a stubborn West Brom that Utd might struggle to break down. Of course, he could land a haul. But so could the players you already own. The question is whether you want him in your side longer term? And who you'd be losing to get him in?

Over the long term I'd think that KDB is the better option. But City haven't shown much attacking form yet and Vardy is firing. Might well depend on the rest of your team and who you lose to get them in.
