PlayON Player Picks – Gameweek 12

With six of the top eight teams going head-to-head this Gameweek, some of the leading Fantasy lights are faced with a tough task. We look beyond the likes of Luis Suarez and Sergio Aguero in this week’s article, then, and plunder the budget end of the PlayON Price List to snap up a trio of headliners on the comeback trail:

If you’re new to PlayON, read this season’s introduction article for more information. If you’re already a PlayON player, read on for our selection of this week’s targets…

Goalkeeper – Allan McGregor
Steve Bruce seemed more than optimistic yesterday that his first-choice stopper is set for a weekend return. McGregor has missed the last three league fixtures with a thigh injury but is poised to replace Steve Harper between the sticks at home to Crystal Palace – the Tigers have conceded just one goal in five matches at the KC Stadium so far, whilst their opponents have netted only twice on the road. At a mere 8.0m, the Scot looks a real budget-friendly option in this week’s PlayON price list, though if you’re unconvinced over the Tigers’ potential, Man City’s Costel Pantilimon comes in at 7.9m and entertains a Tottenham side that have notched just three times in the last five league fixtures.

Defender – Fabricio Coloccini
With Mathieu Debuchy serving a one-match suspension this weekend, the fit-again Argentine looks set to return to the Newcastle backline. The versatile Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is likely to shift to right-back to cover his compatriot’s absence, allowing Coloccini to slot in at centre-half for the first time since early October. A stint on the sidelines means the Magpies skipper comes in at just 8.3m in this week’s PlayON price list – Alan Pardew’s side will be confident of a third successive clean sheet as they entertain a Norwich City side that have scored just twice on the road all season. Elsewhere, Cesar Azpilicueta (7.6m) could deputise for Ashley Cole once again, despite the latter recovering from the rib problem that forced him off for England in midweek – the Chelsea full-back faces a trip to goal-shy West Ham. Alternatively, Stoke’s Geoff Cameron (8.1m) looks a strong shout for a clean sheet – he welcomes Sunderland to the Britannia, with the visitors finding the net just twice away from home thus far.

Midfielder – Theo Walcott
Back in the Gunners squad for the home clash against former club Southampton, Walcott sets you back a mere 6.1m due to a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Granted, there’s no guarantee he’ll start but Walcott will surely play some part of tomorrow’s Emirates showdown and, at such a paltry sum, is a relatively risk-free route into the Arsenal attack as Arsene Wenger’s side go in search of a fifth straight home win. Robbie Brady is another cut-price option returning from injury – Hull’s top scorer is priced at just 6.9m by PlayON for his Gameweek 12 home showdown with basement-dwellers Palace. Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho is still kindly priced at 8.3m for the Merseyside derby – although he didn’t score last time out, the Brazilian still earned 1,275 points (tenth amongst midfielders) due to numerous attempts on goal.

Forward – Wayne Rooney
With Suarez and Aguero facing resilient Everton and Tottenham rearguards, we turn to United’s most consistent frontman so far this season. David Moyes’ men roll up to Cardiff looking for their fifth successive win and Rooney, priced at 11.6m, looks full of confidence under the guidance of his former Everton mentor. A home clash with Norwich City brings Loic Remy into consideration – the Newcastle forward has now scored seven times in the last seven and will set you back 11.8m against a Canaries side that have conceded 11 goals in their last two road trips. Christian Benteke may have dropped in form but the chances are still coming the 10.1m priced Villa forward’s way. Expected to recover from a knee knock, the big Belgian could well return to form for Monday night’s midlands derby at the Hawthorns.

How To Play

PlayON is weekly Fantasy Football (for free or for cash) so you can dip in and out of playing throughout the season. Once your starting XI is built (you can keep changing your team right up to two hours before the first kick-off – 10.45 on Saturday morning), you can compete for cash. Entering a multiplayer game for a set stake, you’ll have a chance of winning your share of the pot should you finish high enough in the rankings.

Similarly, you can challenge other players to one-on-one games, selecting the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Les Ferdinand and OptaJoe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged for free or for £1. The Fantasy Football Scout team is also available to be challenged and has a 58% win rate to this point.

The Fantasy Football Scout Game

We’ve also got a £2 multiplayer game, dedicated to our community, which is now open and the prize pot is building.

Challenge Your Mates

You can also set up your own multiplayer games with your mates to play for free bragging rights or for cash. Create your own game at www.playon.co.uk.

Finally, a reminder that we have published a strategy guide, offering some tips for getting the most from your PlayON lineup, right here.

You have to be over 18 to enter cash games at PlayON. If you do wager some cash, please remember to gamble responsibly. PlayON is licensed and regulated by the UK Gambling Commission.

    Killian here from PlayON,

This week we are asking the FFS community to critique our newly designed site ahead of it being launched - http://playon-ui.herokuapp.com/

In addition to the new designs, we are adding the following functionality:

    - multiple team selection so you can pick up to 3 teams each week;
    - in-play games so you can continue to enter one-on-one and multiplayer games throughout the weekend and can challenge people after seeing their teams;
    - live chat for every one-on-one and multiplayer game;
    - alternative payment methods - we are aiming to have PayPal, Neteller and Skrill live with this first release of the new site.

We are also going to be adding a detailed stats section, as well as player, team and gameweek analysis articles each week, along with a live commenting system. As you will see from the top left dropdown menu, we are also going to be launching multiple domestic leagues, as well as multiple languages over time - although this won’t happen until 2014.

PlayON’s goal from the start has always been to deliver the ultimate fantasy sports experience. We have been working hard on this new site over the past number of months so we would really appreciate any feedback the FFS community has on it - if you have any suggestions for improvement or new feature additions, please add them as comments below and we will work on getting them included before we go live.

As usual, I'm happy to answer any general questions you have about our live site at http://www.playon.co.uk

All feedback and suggestions are very much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Killian

        Hi Granville,
No none of this is live yet - the heroku site is a demo site with our new designs.
We are just looking for feedback on it at present so we can include any suggestions / improvements ahead of putting it fully live. We are aiming to have it all live shortly

Looks very nice. Not too sure if the scoring matrix is that useful taking up space on the front page.

The only real thing I don't like about the current site is the lock out between the deadline and the kick off. The team sheets are in between and I find myself having to try and recall the player I've picked.

On the new site this is resolved and you will always be able to see your team(s).
Team selection will continue to be locked at 2 hours before the first kick-off but the team page will continue to be visible and you will also be able to see other people's teams after the deadline so can challenge them as the team sheets are revealed or as matches are being played

You pretty much don't have the budget to pick 11 nailed on starters most weeks, so the risks have to be taken.

          Hi Granville,
That's one of the main reasons behind us adding multiple team selection - if one of your teams has a non-starter in a given week your other team(s) will hopefully have 11 starters. Lots of people do win each week with only 10 players scoring points

How about this for a suggestion (maybe you already do it). You are graded in terms of your overall record of winning but this takes into account a tier system so if i beat the num 1 player ill gain more rating than beating the last. Then maybe as you increase your rating (which others can see clearly) you gain certain benefits? What these are i dont know, maybe automatic challenges like you are giving out here such as play all ambassadors and win and gain an extra £5.

        Hi D1sable,
Thanks a lot for that suggestion.
We had previously considered a ranking / leaderboard structure with a chess ranking type algorithm behind it but this has been pushed down the priority list until we get the new site live. It is however something we are still looking at so thanks for the input.

Nice, ok what about choosing the type of game you want to play. You can play the standard game type (current scoring system) or maybe play a game type which you compete on goals scored only, or clean sheets etc.
You could even have restricted gametypes where you customise your game so you can challenge people but with your own customised rules such as no players from 'the big4' / No players playing at home etc.

      What do you think?

        Thanks for that D1sable,
The issue with creating lots of different game types is that liquidity decreases - i.e. the number of people who you can play against is less. However as the site grows over time this is something we will certainly consider. Thanks for the suggestion

I wouldn't expect a thrashing every time but Lukaku managed 1 shot on target. Something is amiss at Everton. Maybe it's Barkley, maybe it's something else. I don't know but I'm nervous about Lukaku.

I sold him. I already have money on him winning the top scorer title this season, so can't let him ruin my FPL too. He has already ruined enough of it. Really, I blame Lukaku for most of my FPL failure. I have had otherwise performing team but twice given up a free-scoring forward to get Lukaku who can't even manage a shot on target.

    Any oracles around?

Need 3 to play this gw of Walker, Ward, Barkley, JWP & Clyne. All look bleak options.

Any of these for a -4 seem worthy?

    A) Barkely to Brady
    B) Walker to Mertesacker/G Johnson

Either would give me enough funds to upgrade JWP to Morrison next week. Quite happy with rest of team.

I think everyone's underestimating Southampton massively coming into this game vs Arsenal. If anyone's watched them this season, the way they dominate play is ridiculously impressive. Out of those, if you were, I'd say B to Johnson (although, I'm expecting very few CS this week) and play him, Ward & JWP.

Thanks. I'd start JWP without issue. Its his time on the pitch that I question. He and Barkley could well be 1 pointers for the next few. Think I'll swap them for the Brady/Morrison combo - Brady this week for Palace.

      Thanks again for your input.

Oh bugger. Januzaj might rise tonight.

Set on getting rid of him for Sess, like to do my transfers on Friday evening, then leave it so I dont make silly decisions just before the deadline.

Now I'm going to be tempted to leave it, as I might as well try and get the extra 0.1

I bet I end up captaining Arnautovic.

Anyone else own Sturridge but no Suarez on here like my unfortunate self? If so how are you feeling about it going into this weekend and what has stopped you get Suarez?

For me it's been budget issues and more pressing matters to address in my team. Felt fine about owning Sturridgr until the potential injury situation. Would take -8 at least to swap Suarez for Sturridge this week! Original plan was to bring him in next week for -4 but his price is going to run away from me.

If the (crocked backline) West Ham v Chelsea fixture turns into a thrashing, there is an overlooked solution to the "Shall I get Remy or Rooney" problem.

Struth! I'd considered getting rid for Remy this week 🙂

I'm sorely tempted to hand Hazard the armband seeing as how depleted West Ham are at the back. However, Upton Park is a very narrow pitch (contributes to their home defensive record, imo), so I'm not sure how much space Hazard and co. will get.

Might just go and take a punt on Eto'o!!

He said: "I just decided to change it. I have said to the players that between now and January we have one game a week.

"The players are working very well and very hard on a daily basis but I need to give oxygen to some players, so they can see a light at the end of the tunnel.

"It is important that I use the players well.

I can't understand why people are so reluctant to get Loic Remy. Only four players have scored more Premier League goals than him since he joined the league last January and he has outscored more acclaimed strikers like Aguero and Rooney in that time. I know Newcastle are the most unpredictable team in the league but he was playing for the worst team in the league last season and was still banging them in. He is home to a team this Gameweek that have conceded 11 in their last two away games 😯 Surely he is a must have?

He's a brilliant finisher, a cut above most. Just a general combination of litigation worries and worries about him keeping up his goals from that number of shots (imo not too concerning - he's a great finisher). A lot of 'casuals' are buying him and doing very nicely indeed.

He's very clinical so we'd definitely welcome that element, Giroud can overplay. On the same side of the coin though Giroud's linkup play is central to Arsenal's game, I admittedly haven't seen enough to decide whether Remy is enough of a creator.
