PlayON Player Picks – Gameweek 13

Wayne Rooney delivered in style for us last weekend, but Arsene Wenger’s decision to bench Theo Walcott against his former club Southampton left us frustrated. This week sees Sergio Aguero welcome Swansea to the Etihad and Luis Suarez roll up to Hull City on Sunday – with Fantasy managers desperate to find room for one, or even both, we scour the budget end of the PlayON Price List to free up cash to splash up top:

If you’re new to PlayON, read this season’s introduction article for more information. If you’re already a PlayON player, read on for our selection of this week’s targets…

Goalkeeper – Simon Mignolet
The Liverpool keeper comes in at just 8.7m this weekend ahead of Sunday’s trip to Hull. Whilst Brendan Rodgers’ side have struggled for clean sheets on the road, their hosts have scored a mere four goals in six matches at the KC Stadium, suggesting a shut-out could well be on the cards for the Belgian. West Ham’s Jussi Jaaskelainen is another solid option this weekend. Setting you back 9.0m, he welcomes Fulham to Upton Park and, with Martin Jol’s men failing to score in four of their last five road trips, Hammers boss Sam Allardyce will be optimistic for a seventh clean sheet of the season.

Defender – Martin Olsson
The Swede has started the last seven at left-back for Norwich, but could be set to benefit from injuries to Anthony Pilkington and Robert Snodgrass in midfield. Chris Hughton may opt to utilise Nathan Redmond on the right, with Olsson – priced at just 7.9m – handed the role on the opposite wing. In addition, the Canaries are playing host to a Crystal Palace side with just three goals to their name on the road so far. Liverpool’s Jon Flanagan also looks a real option ahead of a trip to Hull. With Jose Enrique sidelined after knee surgery, the youngster is expected to retain the left-back berth after an impressive showing in last week’s Merseyside derby – coming in at just 7.3m, his battling abilities are favoured by the PlayON scoring matrix. Aston Villa’s fit-again Antonio Luna looks set for a return to action against basement-dwellers Sunderland tomorrow. The Black Cats have scored just twice on their travels all season, suggesting the Spaniard, who will cost 8.1m of your budget, could be set for defensive returns – Luna’s raiding runs down the left offers the chance of attacking potential as Paul Lambert prepares to return to 4-3-3.

Midfielder – Samir Nasri
A home game against Swansea hands Manchester City further chance to rack up the goals after they hit Tottenham for six last weekend. With David Silva still sidelined due to a calf complaint, Nasri – who scored in the midweek Champions League win over Viktoria Plzen – looks poised to play a crucial role, with his creativity teeing up chances aplenty for an attack that has now scored 26 times in six matches at the Etihad. If the Frenchman’s 9.2m price tag is too hefty, Norwich’s Nathan Redmond is available for 8.2m ahead of the home game with Palace – his eye for a shot may well be rewarded by the PlayON scoring matrix. We are also keeping faith with last week’s headliner Theo Walcott – he’s been eased back into action by Arsene Wenger, but may well be set for a start away to Cardiff. At 6.3m, he’s more than kind on the budget.

Forward – Christian Benteke
The Villa striker has struggled to make an impact since returning from injury and has now failed to score in each of his last five appearances. Last Monday’s draw at West Brom saw both Gabby Agbonlahor and Andreas Weimann climb off the bench to signal their comebacks from injury and, with his trusty sidekicks back in contention, a return to 4-3-3 for the visit of Sunderland could prove the catalyst for a turnaround in form for the 10.9m-priced Benteke. Man City’s Alvaro Negredo has been kept firmly in the shade by Sergio Aguero’s displays, but the Spaniard, at 11.2m, has also racked up the goals in front of the home faithful. He offers an alternative to his strike-partner and also appeals to those willing to go all-out on Manuel Pellegrini’s attack. If you’re shopping on a budget, Shola Ameobi is one of the cheapest guaranteed starters this weekend as Newcastle go in search of a fourth successive win at home to West Brom – at 9.8m, he picked up 970 points in last weekend’s triumph over Norwich.

I see you've dropped to 65% win rate - a bit of work to do to get back up to 80% and win the challenge.
Still plenty of gameweeks left though

      Hi Killian,
Really enjoying playon so far, brilliant simple format. Think I top scored on the whole site last week, typically didn't enter any of the 'bigger pot' leagues however!

In general the articles on fantasy football scout are really good. OK so maybe the urge to put out lots of articles means some of them are a bit ropey and lead the uninitiated in the wrong direction. But mostly they're interesting to read and contain a great many useful nuggets of information.

There's loads of detail on form, fixtures, rotation and almost anything else that might be useful to us. And at even the first hint that there may be an upturn in form for a player it seems to get mentioned in an article. Just off the top of my head, this week we've been pointed towards players as unlikely as Peter Crouch, Chris Brunt, Martin Olsson and Joel Ward.

The same high praise can't be directed to the RMT though. It might be a sophisticated model but all too often it's a case of garbage in garbage out. It's updated too late in the week to be much use and so far as the predictions are concerned they really are far too cautious and bland to be of any use whatsoever.

Not sure if you believe me? Here's some points per game data:

    aguero actual 8.25 (last 12) RMT 4.5 (next 7)
    suarez actual 10.4 (last 7) RMT 4.4
    giroud actual 6.3 (last 12) RMT 4.4
    rooney actual 6.4 (last 12) RMT 4.25

well thank goodness Giroud is as good as the others and I don't need to transfer him out...but putting sarcasm aside my actual weekly scores are way higher than the RMT predictions (typically 15-20% higher)...also hands up if you think Jonny Evans is the 48th best defensive option priced £5.5m or less...(and these are by no means the only things I could argue about)

I just find it's not hard to find dodgy or out of date predictions in the RMT every time I look at it

So it's time for the RMT team to grow a pair and put them on a wooden block under a sharp knife...sometimes there's going to be blood on the floor but at least we'd have some decent estimates that we can actually use

And I want them on Monday!!!!

Shy of asking them to pick your team for you what more do you want? With the exception of possibly giroud all those strikers are firing. Based on a 'good ' total score for the season being 220-230 for an in form striker I think 4.5 ppg is a fair estimate (if you include double captaincy points).

Rate my team is a good guide but should be treated as just that......

I think that it's a great tool, but I agree it is conservative. As an example it's predicting 51.91 for me and 50.47 for my cup opponent. Looks good for me then, until you actually look at the players and once I've ruled out the common and equivalent players the only real difference is that I have Remy and my opponent has Aguero -- now it doesn't look quite so rosy does it?

Mark: I'd also like to see a "last updated" timestamp on there so that we now how stale the data is. As Dribbler says: monday's fine,

The RMT points estimates never have and never will match the actual points scored by players - I'm not really qualified to explain this in detail but the professor will perhaps be around later to add to this thread. I'll certainly point him at it and hot topic it later if he's around.

This means comparing RMT scores to actual scores is unfair - instead it's about how RMT rate those players relative to others - last week it had Lukaku and Giroud rated very highly which I questioned and yet they went on to outscore other strikers (aside from Aguero). It can't be expected to get points totals correct, but it does a good job at rating players reletive to eachother.

As for the updates, it has been updated midweek (it was updated yesterday morning) and again on Fridays. We will be shifting those updates to Tuesdays from now on so they're a little bit earlier as Joe is taking these on.

Updating earlier is difficult because we have to wait for injury news to filter through because the updates are based on the probability of players playing in the next match. If we updated Monday, we'd need to update Tuesday and Wednesday as more team news and confirmation of injuries come through.

Next season we're going to get RMT integrated better into our systems so that updating the probabilities is easier and can be done more regularly. Right now, however, if you check on Tuesday evening's and again on Friday evenings, you'll see RMT updated for the GW ahead.

As for Evans - his RMT values are based on his probability of start both short and long-term. His long-term probability did need tweaking and you'll see Evan's improve in the ratings as a result with tonight's update. Due to the complexity of the model and the variables involved that involve human input, it's inevitable that there will be this kind of occurance. Evans has recently emerged as a strong option, whereas, in the long-term, he's been ranked under Rio and Vidic for starts. The model can't learn this stuff on its own and so it needs our human input to sort it. This level of human input will improve now that Joe is also focused on updating RMT in addition to myself.

Put any further queries on specific players in here and I'll ask Chris to add to this thread later.

Yeah, players that are doubtful to start seem to be the main problem. Like it took a long time for Ravel Morrison to emerge as a prospect in RMT. I can understand why their predicted points are lower, but I think that maybe the short-term effect should be somewhat softened.

        thanks for replying Mark:

"The RMT points estimates never have and never will match the actual points scored by players"...of course they won't...they are estimates and actual results will always be different

"This means comparing RMT scores to actual scores is unfair"...rubbish...you make estimates, check the actual results and learn from the experience as best you can...low PPG estimates for leading players are nothing new...they were endemic last season too

"last week Lukaku and Giroud (were) rated very highly which I questioned and yet they went on to outscore other strikers"...this sample of results is far too small to draw any meaningful conclusions

"it does a good job at rating players reletive to each other"...so you really think Giroud is as good as the other three??? (obviously fixture difficulty is a factor I chose to ignore for simplicity but it's nowhere near important enough to explain this result)

"Updating earlier is difficult etc"...yes I appreciate that...but as you know many people either make their transfers or else plan them early in the week...so the sooner the better please...and Tuesday is a massive improvement on Friday especially if we are told when it's been done...a members article telling us it's been done and talking about the changes would be great

"If we updated Monday, we'd need to update Tuesday and Wednesday as more team news and confirmation of injuries come through"...yes please for the daily updates as we discussed last season

"you'll see Evan's improve in the ratings as a result with tonight's update"...Evans is just an example of out of date data...and an update done on Friday night is too little too late

"Due to the complexity of the model and the variables involved that involve human input, it's inevitable that there will be this kind of occurance"...it's not inevitable...it just depends how much time and money you're able and willing to spend on it...I'm just asking for information and predictions in the articles to be put into the RMT more quickly, that's all

"This level of human input will improve now that Joe is also focused on updating RMT in addition to myself"...that's great Mark...to be honest it sounds like you're already trying to do a lot of the things I'm asking for so thanks

The RMT is and should be based on statistical probability, and is, at least for me, a useful rational add-on info to all the subjective tips and guesses flying around on the web. The day the RMT starts predicting hattricks for any player, becasue it seems likely, you might just rename it to Lawros FPL Predictions.

In that case, I think Lawros predictions would suit your needs better.

      Bench Chico for sure.

The other three are all likely to concede but I would play Dawson and Clyne. Spurs had a horrible aberration last week but are generally solid and will be anxious to avoid a repeat.

Soton have been solid, Boruc apart, away to the big teams and Clyne carries a reasonable attacking threat.

Realistically you are probably looking at 1-2 points whoever you choose.

Thanks chaps. Think it's coming down to a straight choice between Hazard and Stevie G for me - love the idea of having both Haz and Oscar, especially given Mou's rotation, but tripling up on Chelsea (got Terry as well) feels risky, plus Gerrard's fixtures are promising. I just know whoever I don't pick will score a brace tomorrow...

Satisfied with my defence and attack for the next two gameweeks so that leaves me with two freebies over GW13 & GW14 to sort out this crop of shite.

    Özil(£10.4m), Oscar(£9.0m), Brady(£5.2m), Januzaj(£4.9m), Whittingham(£5.1m).

"Steve Bruce expects Curtis Davies to be fit to face Liverpool on Sunday despite the defender taking a ‘nasty’ knock to the shin in last weekend’s game against Crystal Palace.

Bruce could also add James Chester to his squad, although the centre back won’t be considered for a start after more than two months out with a hamstring problem.

Robbie Brady, withdrawn at half time last weekend, is fit to play."

Thinking about the same, but hes not nailed on. But he was very good in the derby so expect him to start this weekend at least, and looks like everyone think he will start also.
