Watchlist

The Watchlist Updated – The Defence

With the deadline passed for Gameweek 14 due to a quick turnaround in fixtures, our midweek refresh of the Watchlist rankings focuses on the schedule from next weekend and beyond. As always, we build from the back and roll out our defensive selections for the next four-to-six Gameweeks – our updated rankings can be found in the right sidebar, as always.

Goalkeepers

United’s David De Gea has struggled to pick up the clean sheets in recent matches but the schedule falls kindly for the Spaniard, who rises to top spot in the keeper rankings. Home games against Newcastle and West Ham in the next five, allied with trips to Villa, Hull and Norwich look potentially prosperous – the Spaniard offers a security of starts that has proven rare amongst David Moyes’ backline.

Cardiff’s David Marshallis a big climber and offers an option to those eyeing up a replacement for the stricken Artur Boruc. The Bluebirds number one has a trip to Palace followed by three very favourable home encounters, as West Brom, Southampton and Sunderland all make their way to Wales – he’ll be hoping to improve upon a run of two clean sheets in the last 10, though.

Petr Cech has a trip to Stoke and home games against Palace and Swansea in the next four fixtures to heighten his appeal. Like both Mignolet and De Gea, he’s found defensive returns heard to come by, though; with just a single shout-out in eight appearance, there are better attack-minded options in the Blues defensive to consider.

With only one goal conceded in the last five Gameweeks, Wojciech Szczesny has racked up the points in recent matches. The Pole sits just four points off the summit of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) keeper standings but faces a real test of his resilience as he squares up to Everton, City and Chelsea in the next three Gameweeks.

Three favourable home games (WHM, CAR, HUL) in the next six suggest Simon Mignolet owners may be happy to hold but Liverpool’s away schedule is as tough as their home matches are enticing – visits to Spurs, City and Chelsea may well persuade some to part company with the Belgian, who has one clean sheet in 10 heading into this evening’s visit of Norwich.

With just a single goal conceded in the last four Gameweeks, Julian Speroni has edged his way onto Fantasy radars. The arrival of Tony Pulis has continued the good work of caretaker boss Keith Millen and bodes well ahead of home games against Cardiff and Newcastle and a trip to Villa in the next four – despite his budget price of 4.5, though, the Argentine’s appeal is lessened by cheaper options in the Eagles’ backline. Like Marshall, he looks a viable replacement for Boruc over until our winter wildcards come into play and rotates home/away well with the Cardiff keeper over the next few Gameweeks and beyond.

John Ruddy welcomes Swansea and Hull to Carrow Road as he looks to build on a run of one goal against in the last three home appearances. The Canaries stopper also has trips to Sunderland and Palace in the next six but, valued at 4.9, is pricier than any of his defensive team-mates heading into that kind run.

Brad Guzan has earned three clean sheets in the last four Gameweeks heading into a run which sees Villa pay visit to Southampton, Fulham and Stoke. With home games against Palace and Swansea also amongst their next six, Paul Lambert’s side will be optimistic of picking up further defensive returns over the festive period.

City’s Costel Pantilimon has trips to Southampton and Fulham, in addition to a home clash against Palace, to boost his points potential. The imminent return of Vincent Kompany also helps as Arsenal and Liverpool both roll up to the Etihad, though there’s still a risk he could make way for Joe Hart as Manuel Pellegrini assesses his options. A gamble but one worth taking by those who are lucky enough to have a settled lineup with transfers going spare.

Defenders

John Terry retains his spot at the summit after picking up a third double figure haul of the season at home to Southampton. The Chelsea skipper remains the biggest goal threat from the back amongst Jose Mourinho’s charges and looks immune to rotation as the schedule picks up pace.

United’s kind run of matches earns Jonny Evans a climb. The centre-half has now started each of the last six and, at 5.0, is the most favourably priced of David Moyes’ backline options – for those with cash to splash, though, Patrice Evra has justified the extra outlay at 6.3.

Per Mertesacker suffers a slight drop due to Arsenal’s tough run. The big German’s attacking threat in the box still keeps him firmly in our thoughts, though, with a goal and assist to his name already. Glen Johnson remains the most secure route into Liverpool’s back-four with Jon Flanagan offering a cheaper alternative if he continues to see off the challenge of Aly Cissokho for the left-back berth – Brendan Rodgers’ side need to up their resilience, though, ahead of the upcoming schedule.

Home games against Norwich and Hull, allied with a trip to Cardiff in the next four, help Gareth McAuley climb this week’s refresh. Between the sticks, Boaz Myhill’s prospects are dented as Ben Foster closes in on an injury return, leaving the Baggies centre-half as the most appealing option – at 5.5, he’s not cheap, but two goals and an assist shows just why he’s costlier than the rest of Steve Clarke’s defence.

Budget options Martin Olsson, Joel Ward and Ben Turner all clamber up the rankings in light of their upcoming run of games. All three are nailed-on for their respective sides, with Olsson the dearest of the trio at 4.2 – Ward and Turner come in at 4.0 and 4.1 respectively, as mentioned above, rotate very favourably. Indeed, between now and Gameweek 27, they’d hand you a run of (CAR, WBA, NEW, SOU, SUN, NOR, WHM, STO, HUL, NOR, WBA, AVL, HUL) – an outstanding set of home fixtures.

At 4.6, Ron Vlaar offers the most secure route into Villa’s defence ahead of the upcoming run of matches, while Swansea skipper Ashley Williams has showdowns with Hull, Villa and Norwich in the next five for those on the search for a sub 5.0 price defender.

A weekend trip to Arsenal limits the appeal of Seamus Coleman but once that’s out the road, the Everton right-back is poised for a superb run of matches to help cement his spot at the top of the FPL defender standings. From Gameweek 16 onwards, the subsequent fixtures (FUL, swa, SUN, SOT, sto, NOR) could barely be kinder for Roberto Martinez’ side.

Will it be a 5th mid or will you be rotating? If rotating with Ravel then Banan looks quite a decent option till the Jan wildcard, imo.

Yeah, currently I'm looking at Banan. To be honest, though, I've only had a brief look into it. Hopefully someone will stick out like a sore thumb, tonight 🙂

Amalfitano rotates fairly well with Ravel as well so it's probably between those 2.

You prefer Amal over Brunt? The latter already has 2 YCs to his name LOL. Surely WBA will score more goals than Palace, especially if Pullis adopts a Stoke-like playing style.

In UK it's pretty much rolling sky sports news with pundits shouting gooooaaallllllll every so often, then you wait to hear them describe the goal in a long-winded way without really saying who got the assist, then in the middle of that another goooooaaalllllll. It's almost better than having all the games. Almost.

    Just a short personal rant.

Torres - approaching three seasons of being a donkey in the league. Has been Chelsea's main striker over this time.

Ba - Career highlights were West Ham and Newcastle before joining Chelsea. Battering ram. Starts every now and again. Difficult to remember him scoring a goal before Southampton.

Eto'o - 32 and initially short of fitness. Almost immediately got the striker spot after signing.

Lukaku - ran riot on loan at little West Brom and repeating it under a different manager at Everton. Near a 1 goal per start ratio. Frozen out of the team for 3 seasons.

Lukaku, join a club that deserves you. There's a long queue. This is a bizarre apprenticeship for a lousy job. You've already done more in your career than most strikers. You're going through all this just to be Chelsea's striker? A position which appears to have killed the career of every player bar Drogba? If that's the prize at the end of all of this, you've been scammed.

I think most clubs would love to sign him which allows him the choice when the transfer does eventually happen. Not sure of his Chelsea contract but wouldn't have thought he has more than 2 years left on it, can easily see him moving to a bigger club in 18 months.

He has the lowest minutes per goal in Premier League history. I would love it so much if he stayed at Everton.

I would also love to know the "real reason" that Jose hinted at for him going on loan. If indeed that wasn't just some stupid smear made up on the spot to try to deflect from his obvious dropped clanger.

Lots of interesting theories. I thought it was personal disagreement or maybe missed penalty against Bayern. Breadbin reckons he went to Everton because brom didn't play him against title contenders..

I definitely agree. But Mourinho isn't someone who *gambles* on youth. Playing for a big club and a small club is a totally different animal. You could see in the Supercup that Lukaku wasn't necessarily ready for Chelsea. The spotlight is much greater when you're at the top. A few weeks without goals and you're the subject of every backpage headline.

Lukaku put in a transfer request though, didn't he? He was sick of the rotation.

As for Torres, Liverpool fans must be laughing their arses off, though they got stung on Carroll, but still made mugs of West Ham by flogging him to them for something north of 15 mill.

As a Gooner I'd love him as an alternative to Giroud. The pressures less at arsenal too.

Feels like Torres always manages to stay relevant through his national team play. He lights up the Euro's and it's like "Why would Chelsea bench him". He wins the Golden Boot at Confed Cup, etc,.

He gets plenty of assists for Chelsea, but can't find the net to save his life--unless there's a tourney with Xavi and Inesta behind him

Its pretty ignorant to say that he`s been frozen out by Mourinho. His loan to Everton this year is very smart, and if you can`t see why, then i guess that`s your own shortcoming.

            Really? 😉

I'm familiar with the arguments. They came out back in his first loan spell and again with this one. And probably will for the next loan spell, ad nauseum.

We all know Chelsea are doing it so Lukaku hurts their rivals when he plays them, see above. That's great for them. That's in their interest. That's not in his interest. He's a pawn. The whole 'developing his game' argument - no. He's done it with much poorer service at West Brom, and he immediately delivered at Everton. The boy is ready. He's done it with multiple systems, multiple managers. He doesn't need to 'prove' anything else. Almost no other strikers are asked to prove themselves to this level just to get a spot in the team they signed for. "Hey mate, once you've scored a goal per start for two midtable teams, then we'll THINK about playing you..."

I did the exact same transfer for this current GW we're in as I took Nasri out for Hazard and he then goes and scores 2 goals. I had to put him back in to make myself feel better, even though it cost me points.

Basically, taking Nasri out last week has cost me 27 points.

Being a former Vidic owner, I too am wary of dipping my toe back into Utd's defence. I already own Coleman, and whilst Everton do have some good upcoming fixtures, I probably won't go for the double up, WBA is looking promising, McAuley or Ridge for me.

I think the lack of any decent mid in the range of 5.3 - 6.5 means that is better to go for 2 x decent 5m mids (brady/rav/whit) and then upgrade your def with the spare cash. Having paulinho is a waste of cash imo as although he looks promising he doesn't do much at all, and certainly no more than rav/brady etc

every flush. Use either a one litre bottle, a milk carton or a few small plastic bottles.
    2. Do not leave water running when brushing your teeth.
    3. Use a four minute timer for the shower.
    4. Install aerators on taps and shower. Uses less water, but feels like more.
    5. Wash and peel potatoes and Vegetables from water in a bowl. Never under running water.
    6. Get a water butt for collecting rain water to be used for watering garden plants.
    7. Hand wash your car using water from the water butt.
    8. Always fill the dishwasher before use.
    9. Always fill the washing machine before use.
    10. Repair any leaking taps or toilet cisterns

What does saving water actually do? I'm only 20 so am a bit unaware, but it only impacts economically but not environmentally right - due to the water cycle?

Money is a good enough reason, but it takes energy to get the water cleaned and back to you so that can be impacted too.

Depends if the water cycle works properly, which in Australia it tends not to. Using the water puts it in the ocean (usually) but whether that then ends up back in the rivers and reservoirs is another matter entirely.

Huge environmental impacts to moving greater quantities of water about.

Pumping stations use energy, the more they pump etc, etc.
Rivers having water extracted to feed unnecessary human use depletes water for all river life.
How many more would you like. 🙂

It was a bit of a knee jerk to having no Chelsea cover. Thing is, if he's on he's on pens and FKs and he's cheap for that! Def going to have to get some more rotation proof options in though. If only Benteke was on form (AVFC have good fixtures)

What are people doing who own Ramsey & Ozil for the upcoming city & chelsea fixtures? Getting rid of Ozil? I had always planned to do that. The fact that he was benched for Palace and then started the Merseyside Derby suggests to me that Martinez values him as first choice but is terrified of burning him out. So he's using him for big games and resting him for smaller ones. Perhaps.

At the start of the season there were articles suggesting that Moyes had considered taking Barkely to Man Utd with him. My theory is that Martinez will play him tonight as Barkley will be keen to put on a stellar display in front of his old boss in he hope that he will get the call to move to Old Trafford. This theory is partly based on blind optimism seeing as I have had Barkley in my team from GW1 and am loathe to sell him because I want my decision to put him in vindicated over the whole season. Sadly I think I am maybe being a little deluded in this as he has got nul points recently, but I am persisting with him as he does seem to be a very good player for the FF price, and hopefully he will get back to his potential.

Ah, the old blind optimism argument. I use it a lot, with mixed results 🙂

I hadn't heard that about United but I wouldn't have thought Martinez would want to help Barkley to leave, would he?

I agree, it was initially sweet when he was getting games and all the naysayers gradually went quiet. But it's getting frustrating now and I think I'm going to part company with him. Sad times.

Stoke has good fixtures coming up, wouldnt lose him. United conceding a lot atm and Evans is just half way nailed on. He`s nailed on, but only when Rio/Vida cant play, which to be fair is a lot of the time.

    2FTs... Nudda in da bank

    Boruc - Mignolet
    Clyne - Coleman - Chester - Luna - Terry
    Barkley - Cabaye - Hazard - Ravel - Sess
    Aguero - Rooney - Suarez

    What looks better:
    A) Mignolet/Clyne/Sess > Gaz/Kosc/Ramsey
    or
    B) Barkley/Clyne/Sess > N'zonzi/Ward/Ramsey
