A shift in the fixtures schedule and the Fantasy Premier League bonus point allocation were among the key issues under discussion in the community this week. Our frugal writers, statisticians and posters rinsed through the latest array of budget buys, while others called for controversial changes to the game we all know and love. Join us as we edge into the Gameweek by casting an eye back on the articles and chatter that helped pass our time over the past seven days.

The Community Articles

As well as serving up his regular trio of attacking differentials, this week, Arvination has also turned his attention to cheap differential alternatives to their pricey team-mates. This is a must read for those looking to free up funds and, we hope, yet another community regular.

The Puntmaster also dropped by with his latest batch of differentials. He’s currently licking his wounds: last week was the first occasion where less than two out of three of his punts delivered. However, seeing as West Ham’s James Tomkins, who netted 11 Fantasy Premier League points, was amongst them, he is more than forgiven. This week’s selection box have a distinct Merseyside and Manchester feel to them.

Earlier this month, I undertook some research into how defenders are performing under FPL’s bonus point system and called on the community to come up with their own analysis. This week, the community’s experts duly obliged with Mata is the Juan examining bonus points per position and Innsie tackling the subject of baseline bonus, which is calculated by stripping away goal, assist and clean sheet points. There’s some fascinating stuff amongst them.

MOTR was another community scribe to absorb themselves in statistics; he carried out a head-to-head analysis, assessing how Sergio Aguero measures up against United rival Wayne Rooney. The Sarjeant’s abacus was also in overdrive during the week as he examined goals scored and clean sheets in his latest form guide: another of our favorite regulars.

Meanwhile, Eunuch Jelly choose to ignore the quest for rank and points and instead highlighted some far more important victories that playing Fantasy Football can deliver.

Finally our resident Nostradamus, Surgical Attack, has cast his eye over Gameweek 8’s fixtures to deliver his predictions.

The Members Tables

Giggs Boson took a look at under the radar goalscorers in terms of minutes per goal. This table is particular useful for finding players that may not be getting pitch time, but are still more than capable of making an impact.

The most attack-minded Arsenal options are the focus of Teltzer’s latest table, which is sorted by shots in the box – still regarded as the best indicator of goal scoring potential.

The Hottest Topics

Gameweek 8 signals a sea change on the fixture list, with teams like Everton and Arsenal benefitting from obliging runs, while United and Chelsea are faced with more testing times: it’s triggered some fresh thinking when it comes to recruitment.

With Chelsea facing Liverpool and Manchester United in the next four Gameweeks, some Fantasy managers are even considering ditching Cesc Fabregas. Christina’s hot topic will prove invaluable for those looking for an exit route. While Innsie’s post on the pros and cons of selling Fabregas offers a more even handed take on the debate.

Given the schedule shift, we asked whether it is time to consider robbing Diego Costa of the captain’s armband. Baines on Toast still has faith, while CrazyAsianAC prefers Aguero’s higher chance of bonus points, as the Chelsea man struggles to compete with the likes of Fabregas, Eden Hazard and Branislav Ivanovic.

Choosing an Arsenal asset remains a tricky dilemma, although Danny Welbeck, the Gunners’ lone striker, stands out as the current option. Those worried that his injury while on England duty may curtail his game time this weekend can be reassured by our resident physio Facer . He was on hand earlier in the week to allay any fears of a potential absence.

There was a raft of other Arsenal candidates mentioned in our hot topic on the Emirates assets, while Dat Guy Davey Silva provided some interesting analysis on Theo Walcott and his potential return to the starting XI.

Tottenham’s fixtures also take a turn for the better once they get Gameweek 8’s clash with City out of the way. While our Watchlist strongly favours Nacir Chadli as an option based on value and attacking threat, Wakey revived the case for Christian Eriksen: the Danish playmaker has, quietly and efficiently, notched 26 points over the last four Gameweeks.

Leighton Baines is the main attraction among those looking to exploit Everton’s schedule: their next six Gameweeks includes home ties against Aston Villa, Swansea and West Ham, plus away trips to Sunderland and Burnley. Now could even be the time to ditch the unwritten rule that the Everton defender should never be captained, according to EpicFail.

Budget differentials are set to be key in the quest to free up funds to draft in Baines. The return of Wakey’s excellent Falling Stars series of articles, where he constructs a team made up of potential points scorers whose price has dipped since Gameweek 1, will prove crucial reading for any bargain hunters.

Good players from bad teams can also provide strong value and points potential, according to this discussion kicked off by Rupert the Horse. But bargain hunting is not without problems, as many of those who took part in Just a Hat’s discussion on this season’s most disappointing players revealed.

Going for the right budget differentials will be key to Davros’s chances of success in the Scout Picks this week, after being elected to represent the community with his low ownership player only strategy.

Finally, on the issue of rule changes, Why Is Pardew for Kinnear called for the Fantasy Premier League to introduce a controversial ownership cap with players available on a first come first serve basis. In addition, he believes price rises should be based on performance not ownership, an innovation that Think Tank also backed in his hot topic on the issue.

The Community Tournaments

Billy Gilmore has kindly updated us on the latest goings on in the FFS UEFA Hockey World Cup Tournament. India and New Zealand continue to top both groups and Rest of the World are still in poll position to claim the tournament’s affiliated quiz, being masterminded by The Fantasy Freak.

I saw the parts of the press conference. He is not even definitely out.

That was lunchtime. I haven't been on the site since. Maybe someone has slipped a journalist a nod and wink since then that this injury is actually for real. Or maybe its rumour, trolling and balls.

From the press conference, I got the impression he had at least some genuine chance of starting.

          Keep. Unless:
          a) there is some genuine reliable information indicating several weeks out (as above, this was not said in the press conference)
          b) you only bought him recently and won't lose much money

Gentlemen! I'm on a holiday and have missed EVERYTHING for The last week.

    Bego
    Colo Clyne PVA
    Haz Siggy Di Maria Sterling
    Costa Aguero (c) Ulloa

2 FT's. Kind of lost. What would you do guys? Last minute desperation, but I've got noe clue atm. In NYC shitfaced, think I should fix it before we go out.

Prob wont hurt you, but if youre looking to catch up or make a move, gambling on taking out such a high ownership player for someone else, can be very helpful. Ofcourse it could all backfire.

I did what youre not going to. Costa -> Aguero at the last minute since i couldnt afford the price rise. Captaining Aguero, City just levels above Spurs at home.

Prob not a bad choice if it's between one or the other. I have Aguero in my team too. Thinking of switching to captaining him but also remember the last time COsta was doubtful lol Reckon he's either start or not play at all?

I however think its a little bit different than that time. International games behind, 3 important fixtures in short succession coming up. To answer your question i feel pretty sure that he`ll either start or not play at all, but theres every chance he wont play the full 90.

Dont really see Aguero completing the full game either unless its tied and they really need something. I do like Agueros chances at home much better than Costas away. For me i wouldnt captain a player with such uncertainty around his fitness, i`d just play it "safe" and exclude that player from the equation.

        What about this ::

        - Mourinho described him in press conference as 'a big doubt'
        - Went back to Chelsea Monday 9am to receive further treatment on hamstring
        - Newspapers [Daily Mail / Telegraph] reporting out for 3 weeks
        - Mourinho on record stating 'costa can't play 2 games a week currently'

He will therefore definitely miss one of Palace/Maribor this week. With 67% ownership the safest thing to do is to keep him captain [if you were planning to previously] and make sure you have a good VC appointed. Good Luck.

They were 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th and 10th for highest %, so while the numbers aren't quite there, they at least show a strong indication of who is likely to rise. Azpilicueta was out of nowhere.

Similar story with fallers. 7/8 of those they predicted to fall did, as well as Brady (-93.7) and Clichy (-87.1)

Sanchez, Sorensen and Ramires were well out, but they're very low ownership players (owned by a collective 1%)

To add to point 4 though, Costa played 3 games in 8 days before the international break, so this is clearly a load of Jose balls. He wasn't even subbed off in two of them.

This may suggest how things go down tomorrow...

    Costa and his hamstring

Not for the first time this season Diego Costa has emerged as an injury doubt due to his tight hamstrings. Also not for the first time, certain sections of the media are making claims he could be laid off for some time. In september such claims turned out to be false. It remains to be seen if it's the case this time around.

However facts seem to be in very short supply and all articles base their stories around the word COULD with liberal use of the old journalistic standby "Jose would neither confirm nor deny" sprinkled throughout.

As fantasy managers, many with the armband on Costa this is very annoying, to put it mildly. Having previously been a victim of past media reports regarding Costa, i for one will be in no rush to remove him. Currently owned by 67% of managers he cost 10.5 million to buy, i would only receive 10.8 if selling, and he would currently cost 11.2 to buy back, a strong disincentive to sell.

If Costa fails to start its time for Boyd to show why he is the fifth midfielder of choice, he's due some attacking points, you never know, this could be his week to shine. As for the armband, Aguero or Welbeck will be more than acceptable choices. So there os no point worrying about Costa and his hamstring, just sit back and watch the drama unfold

            Cheers.

Tough to improve my defence without dismantling elsewhere. Would have preferred likes of Aguero / Costa to be out (for sure) for a couple weeks to change stuff up.

Having Clyne for the next few weeks is very desireable. Same with Schneiderlin, if you have him then i`d just stick with him. Surely there`s other things you can shape up with your team.

Yeah it doesn't seem to make sense getting rid.

Just want to get Baines in somehow, will have to think about it.

                Cheers!

Does going to Boyd give you enough? If you just want an option for this week, mahrez could be good?

He gives enough to allow Clyne > Baines or Naylor > Azp.

                Cheers for the help 🙂

Naylor to azpi sounds perfect to me, however I can see a 0-0 Sunday evening between sto and sou, you might want to wait...

        Then take the gamble 🙂

You're making the decision at the end of the day, gambles make FPL exciting (and sometimes horrible)

        Pretend Dawson = Wisdom

Rather 2 as 1 has 2 WBA defenders.

All depends if you rate Villa defence.

Personally I think falcao could do very well the next few games, does anyone remember the last time he faced Chelsea? It all depends when you bought Costa' how much you stand to lose out on, and whether you like to take a risk

Got him for 11.0, and falcao does loom pretty good

If rumours about Costa (3 weeks) are true and with Sturridge out, people will again go back to Rooney? We always seem to do that right, even if we don't want to?

Probably not since Rooney cant play the next 2 games

If (mighty big if) Costa is out (which I don't believe) people will flock to Aguero / Falcoa. Rooney will not be an option for most.

I'd prefer Falcao over Rooney I think, even if he wasn't banned

I would downgrade I think and upgrade a defender to Baines. Might even go Remy.

Who's more likely to play and make a difference: Trippier or Coleman?

      Neither, Baines?
