Great Expectations – Bobby Zamora

A broken leg in Gameweek 4 put paid to Bobby Zamora’s promising start in Fulham’s only Premier League campaign under Mark Hughes. The forward began the 2010/11 season in good form, with 3 Bonus Points away to Bolton on the opening day followed by an assist in the 2-2 home draw with Man United and a goal away to Blackpool at the tail end of August.

Fourteen Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points from the first three game weeks saw 17K managers ship Zamora in during the first international break, with a home fixture against Wolves looking likely to give the Cottagers their first win of the campaign. Twenty-nine minutes into the match, however, a challenge by Karl Henry resulted in Zamora being stretchered from the pitch with a broken leg and despite Moussa Dembele snatching an injury-time inner for the Cottagers, the injury to Zamora took the shine off their victory.

A six-month absence saw him return to action in early March and Zamora’s impact was immediate; coming off the bench to replace Danny Murphy on 70 minutes, he scored a last-minute penalty to clinch a 3-2 home win over Blackburn Rovers. Zamora wasted little time in carrying on his good form, with a two goals and an assist in the following couple of matches highlighting his top-flight capabilities and, with his price having dropped from 6.5 to 6.0, was looking a real bargain as double gameweek 34 approached.

Much to the chagrin of his Fantasy investors, Zamora made two brief sub appearances over those two fixtures and picked up just one FPL point for 45 minutes of game time, with Mark Hughes easing him back into action. This was a temporary blip, though, and the final four gameweeks of the season saw Zamora grab 1 goal, 3 assists and 4 Bonus Points, as the Cottager’s finished the season in eighth place.

Key Factors

  • New Fulham boss Martin Jol has already promised more attacking football at the Cottage this upcoming season and not only will this benefit the team’s forwards, it could lessen the appeal of their defensive players, with less clean sheets a possibility. Investment in their front men could be the way to go this season under Jol.

  • Zamora played just 757 minutes last term, with a total of nine starts and six sub appearances. Despite this, he picked up 5 goals, 5 assists and 10 Bonus Points and with 63 points, he averaged 4.5 points per game. This was the same return ratio as Clint Dempsey, despite the American’s reputation as a more reliable Fantasy performer.

  • Fulham’s Europa Cup qualifying games have seen them start the season earlier than any other top-flight team and Jol’s side could approach the start of the 2011/12 campaign with a little bit more match-sharpness than the rest of the Premier League.

  • The Cottagers have one of the kindest runs of early matches to the new campaign- a look at the season ticker sees their “fixture difficulty” ranked second easiest up to gameweek 10, with a home match against Man City in gameweek 5 the only time they face any of last season’s top five in their opening ten Premier League matches.

  • Coming in at 7.0, Zamora is still reasonably priced and looks certain to lead the line in Jol’s 4-4-2 formation, with Moussa Dembele and Andy Johnson likely to battle it out for the slot alongside him. Zamora is the only guaranteed starter up front under Jol and with the new manager determined to go on the attack, could prove to be a decent acquisition for those Fantasy managers willing to invest.

Is there a list somewhere about what the EA stats are based on? Is it likely for DMs to get more points this season from bonus?

they may be very similar to the apparently opta based previous ones. not really sure, still reeling from the fact we'll have to wait about 12 hours to find out after each match http://www.premierleague.com/page/EAIndex/0,,12306,00.html

I still see the potential for some bonus reward for the defensive minded players given that the amount of tackles, clearances etc are collated into EA points... the big question is how do each of these indices relate to the whole, proportionately, and which is more rewarding points wise...

Might as well do a RMT. I will call it revision 0.1. 🙂

    Given | Kenny
    Riise | Kompany | Luiz | Bardsley | Taylor S
Albrighton | Van der Vaart | Nasri | Jarvis | Sinclair
    Rooney | Zamora | Halt

All money is used up. I want to balance the positions as much as I can and have defenders who are known to score a few goals or create assists, all the mid-fielders should get 100+ points and my forwards are balanced but I've not seen much of Halt should I keep him?

I kinda like it. Not sure about Nasri though, have to wait and see what happens with Fabregas. His highest scoring seemed to be when he wasn't in the team. I'd watch VDV as well, on pens which is good but Spurs fixtures aren't great.

Thanks. I chose VDV because he usually does well in big games so I can see him scoring big from the off. I chose Nasri because I think Cesc will go and if Nasri stays he will be the main player in the Arsenal midfield. I don't think Arsenal would lose Nasri although his contract does end next year..

I know there is a lack of Chelsea, I just don't know who to pick from their attack. Do you go for the expensive but usually reliable Lampard, Drogba is getting on a bit, Torres very dodgy form and Malouda who's price is less of a gap to Lampard's than previous seasons, and I cannot see him reproducing last seasons form. Any ideas who to go for?

I really want VDV from the start he can score against almost anyone not sure on Nasri yet though.

I am a big fan of both Ireland and Dunn, question marks over Dunn but if he ain't performing that's what the transfers are for! 🙂 I actual; had Dunne too but realized when Given changes would have 4 villa so Dunne got the heave ho.

Seems like a lot of dosh on goalies, McNulty did a really good preseason article last year on Gk combos, hopefully he'll do same again this year.

Anyone got any idea if Norwich getting Naughton on loan puts russell martin on the bench? I've included him in my squad but will have to rethink if he's not going to get a game

I`m really surprised at this. Martin played every game last season as by all accounts was top notch. It seems starnge but maybe Naughton has gone as back up? An option is to go for the left back Tierney and save .5

I'm surprised too as Martin got lots of assists and the odd goal last year so I will be disappointed if he's going to be benched as I thought he would make a great differential at the back. Wouldn't switch to the left back as I went for Martin for his attacking prowess...not Norwich's clean sheet record!

    RMT Version .1

    Al Habsi - Given

    Hughes - Kompany - Luiz - Baines - Rafael

Silva - Malouda - Ben Arfa - Dobbie - Albrighton

    Odemwingie - Suarez - Holt

Pretty well balanced but distinct lack of United cover, but not to bothered considering opening gambit of fixtures.

    What are peoples thoughts?

Yeah lot of £££ tied up in DEF, but I like everyone of those midfielders.

Malouda should be nailed on and not rotated like back end of last season by rotatalotti.

Silva has good fixtures and I think will score some big points.

Ben Arfa was tip top before the injury so hopefully will continue that form.

Dobbie was awesome a few seasons back for us and had a great season just gone, if you saw both play off final's that's just a glimpse. He played better than Adam on soooo many occasions for us.

Albrighton im thinking will start most games with the recent Villa depatures.

wouldn't have al habsi as he dont rotate well with given, baines aint worth 8, luiz/malouda aint guarenteed start, holt and odems aint got good fixtures.surely worth the 1m more to have sinclair instead of dobbie, sinclair plays mostly as an attacker and is on pens,is ben arfa definately fit after nasty injury. back to the drawing board pal.

Nah Kenny and Given is rock solid, and it pays to have that extra 0.5 for alternatives.

Harper/Krul will reveal itself early on as will the Sunderland keeper situation, so that's a 4.5 keeper replacement readymade if QPR start leaking like they're expected to.
