Technical Area

The Technical Area – Comparing Cole and Bosingwa

Two games into the season and Chelsea have struggled to make much of an impression. Andre Villas-Boas’ side have dominated both their opening fixtures in terms of possession – 66% at Stoke followed by 67% at home to West Brom on Saturday evening – but it’s already obvious that in order to implement the new manager’s philosophy, more creativity in the key attacking areas is needed.

At present, both full-backs, Ashley Cole and Jose Bosingwa, have carried the game to Chelsea’s opponents more than any Blues player. Re-installed to the first-team this season, Bosingwa showed on Sunday that his attacking tendencies could be a vital component of Villas-Boas’ team over the 2011/12 season and with a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price of 5.5 in comparison to Cole’s 7.5, will likely rocket in Fantasy ownership if he continues in the same vein.

Both players have picked up the maximum 3 Bonus Points in each of Chelsea’s first two games- Cole in Gameweek 1 and Bosingwa in Gameweek 2- and with that in mind, here’s some analysis on the pair’s respective performances at Stamford Bridge against the Baggies:

Cole and Bosingwa versus West Brom

A look at the Chelsea average position map from the Baggies game highlights just how far forward Cole (3) and Bosingwa (17) played- the pair were almost as high up the pitch in possession as Frank Lampard (8) and Ramires (7) and both saw far more of the ball.

Bosingwa, in particular, was a real stand-out against Roy Hodgson’s side. He made 102 passes, more than any other player this Gameweek and with 68% of his distribution in the opposition half, he carries a significant threat going forward for Chelsea. Cole made 73 passes, a substantial drop in comparison, with 70% coming in the Baggies half.

Lampard and Ramires Passing

Much of this difference in the number of passes each full-back made can be attributed to the midfielders on either side of John Obi Mikel. When the ball went left, Cole had Frank Lampard to contend with for possession whereas on the right, Bosingwa had Ramires. Lampard was far more willing to take on responsibility and make things happen- Cole made 16 passes to Lampard but received 8 in return.

On the other flank, Bosingwa passed to Ramires 13 times and received 11 in return- a far more even ratio. Lampard made a total of 70 passes to Ramires’ 45- clearly, when the ball went right, Bosingwa was far more liable to be the player in possession and as a result, created the assist for Florent Malouda’s winner.

Narrow Baggies
For as much as the Chelsea full-backs were impressive going forward, West Brom’s lack of width was noticeable on Saturday evening and summed up Roy Hodgson’s savvy tactics. A look at the average position map show the two midfield wide men, Chris Brunt (11) and James Morrison (7) stayed narrow and with both central midfielders, Paul Scharner (33) and Youssuf Mulumbu (21) shielding the back-four, Villas-Boas’ side were unable to find a way through from central areas.

Aware of Chelsea’s lack of central cutting edge, Hodgson allowed Villas-Boas’ side the flanks, meaning Cole and Bosingwa bombed forward and left space at the back. When in possession West Brom hit 69 Long Balls for the hard-working front two, Shane Long and Somen Tchoyi , to chase into the space vacated- the ploy clearly worked as John Terry and Alex were troubled with the Baggies strikers’ movement throughout.

Though it’s early days in his stewardship, it’s clear Villas-Boas is still searching for a better balance. There’s something of an air of predictability about the Blues right now and it’s a problem the new boss must solve if he’s to live up to the heady levels of expectancy so typical of the Roman Abramovich regime.

Last night’s news that the club have agreed a fee with Valencia for the services of Juan Mata represents a significant step forward in his rebuilding process. Someone with the ability to beat a man and unlock defences from the middle of the park will not only add a vital component to Chelsea’s play and bring Villas-Boas a step closer to his ideal line-up, it will perhaps prevent the likes of Hodgson setting his team out in such a stolid and stubborn manner.

Am I wrong in thinking that once Luiz is back healthy that between him, A.Cole, Ivanovic, Terry and Alex that Bosingwa is might end up being rotated?

I just can't understand some of the bagwagons that happen........

Heres hoping that 20% more people think RVP is worth getting rid of prior to GW4 so that I can get him for .1 less which will give me the extra needed for Silvas increase.

People are willing to jump on bandwagons now because they still have a wildcard as a safety net.

+1 on hoping RVP to go down 0.1m. My evil master plan has him penciled down for GW4.

I think Luiz does come into the equation as it could be that Ivan moves to RB. Only a possibility, personally I think Bos is a great player and should have the RB slot nailed down

OK, so we've had the first price rises, but no price falls. I remember over the last two seasons falls exceeded rises,is this another error? Or some skewed attempt to give players a feel good effect about their team?

Rolling out the wc gw4. Anyone care to convince me Given/bego isn't worth the 10.0 premium?
Maybe Vorm and a 4.5 (krul?) is better value? Swansea's home ground was a fortress in the championship and he seems to have great reactions so plenty of save points. What Ye think?

Don't think I could handle ruddy & vorm. Vorm & a 4.5 is as low as I'll go. Given/bego looks stellar all season. Question is can that 1.5 earn more points in attack?

WC GW4 for me too. I'm not going to be going for Given/Bego. I personally think £10M is too much on keepers, especially when consider that you'll have a £5M keeper on the bench every week. Just seems a waste to me, although others will disagree.

It'll either be Given and a £4M, or as FB says below, Vorm/Ruddy. I wouldn't be expecting many clean sheets, especially from Ruddy, but as the keepers will be busy they should get their fair share of save points, and it'll give me an extra £1M to upgrade elsewhere.

I'd rather Given + £4M, but if I think that extra £1M could be better used elsewhere when I WC, it'll be Vorm/Ruddy.

Roo and DJ. I just dont think i can justify haven 11 mill spent on a striker that at the moment is not a nailed on starter now that they have a choice of 3 top strikers. I think the spend on bent is worth while as the fixtures look good for the next while. Likewise i think the spend on Dzeko would make things easier in terms of cash on hand for the mid field area.

So far my (c) and bench choice has been, well... shocking !!

I'm sticking with Bent for this week, I know he's almost certain to get 90mins.With big team players rotation or 58mins is too much of a risk for captain. I'll see where it all settles in a few weeks.
I'm not a fan of ship 'em out after one or two thin games,I bring players in for a run and tend to stick with them.
On form I have to say Simpson, Kompany as an option.

            Thanks Flynn

            atm I have gone....

Enrqiue, Bosingwa, Simpson (Kompany, W Brown)

Capt - Suarez, Vice - Bent.

Keeping Torres but dont feel I can make capt after last week, he may only come on for few mins?

            Surely suarez will play?

£17M for me, getting 4 points. But Baines hit the bar and Cahill missed a sitter, so it could've been so different.

They have good fixtures, be patient, it was their first game at the weekend and they were unlucky not to have some goals, Baines could've ended up with a monster score.

So Long had 45,000 transfers in this week and didn't rise,

All the players that did rise are over 50,000 NTI

That's quite a change to previous years !!

Presumably they'll need near on 150,000 this week then for a 0.2 rise - unlikely ?!

Wonder why they've upped it ??

I don't know...but I'm guessing the second wildcard has played a role in this...most teams would have jumped on players from GW1 performances and some did alright again in GW2...so perhaps it has got to do with ownership and people buying those performers after GW2 (rather than 1)...?!?!?

After hearing Bruce say he was shouting at the keeper cos he could see he was not in the right position for the goal I would be worried for his (Mignolet) starting role...Bruce may try alternatives especially as he anticipated the curling shot and must have noted it in the pre-match prep...

I'm thinking so too now, although I don't think it's worth a 4 point hit so will only change after this GW has gone by so I have two transfers.

Right Chaps, played my wildcard in a fit of anger. What do you think of this?

    Hilario (vorm)
Bosingwa, Enrique, Richards (Senderos, De Laet)
    Silva, Young, Tchoiy, O'Hara (Ferguson)
    Bent, Rooney, Suarez

If you've played your wildcard (after GW1 wildcard) you've maybe moved a bit too early but each to their own...

Bosingwa, yet to be seen if he keeps his position, although on form they'd be mad to remove him.

Tchoiy, also watching this fella, once Wingebag is fully fit he may be a bench warmer.

Ferguson, alot of people have him and if he doesn't play he'll start to drop in price as people move to 4.5 2 points per game players.

Hilario - won't stay in goal after chech gets back and you don't wnt to take a 4 point hit for a keeper...

        Cheers guys

Hilario isn't long term but i should have him for 3 or 4 more GW's, i admit i've probly gone too early but was so pi**ed off i had to.

Tchoiy could be a nice differential and i reckon O'hara as oppose to Jarvis is.

I'd get rid of hilarious, you'll need your transfers up front rather than wasting one on a gk. Pick a rotating pair to stick with till January. Tchoyi's not a certain starter & I'm not a fan of wasting a spot on Ferguson, I realise it gives you more funds elsewhere but It's basically throwing 4.0 of your budget away imo. Rest looks very nice.

I can't believe all the point hits and wildcarding going on around here!

We've seen 2 fixtures, 1 if you take into consideration the fact that everyone had a wildcard last week and yet people still feel they need to drastically change their squads!

Bosingwa has one good match and now everyone needs him in...he'll probably be crap this week and those same people will want him out.

Same applies to the likes of Jarvis, Long and Richards...

I'm honestly baffled at how people react on here, I really am.

I like the look of West Broms fixtures, Brunt and Long could be two potential bargains.
I've WC this week as i always do in GW2/3 for the price rises. I may not make any money immediately but it allows me to get the players in to structure a longer-term team, before they rise.

        Rooney or Torres this weekend?

Who to have for Chelsea attacking coverage?
