Set-Piece Takers Updated

One of the benefits of the international break is that it allows us to pause and take stock and perhaps refresh some neglected areas of the site.

We’ve been able to update our set-piece takers based on the evidence of the season so far and, of course, last season’s records – you can now view the updated table – listing the penalty, direct free-kick and corner and indirect free-kick takers for every side – right here.

Mikel Arteta’s shift to Arsene Wenger’s squad has undoubtedly had the biggest impact on the current set-piece landscape. Having relieved Leighton Baines of free-kick and spot-kick duties for Everton at Blackburn in Gameweek three, his deadline day transfer to the Emirates has put Baines back in control, proving a major boost to the left-back’s appeal for the remainder of the season. We’re yet to see what kind of impression Arteta can make at Arsenal but, there’s little doubt he arrives with the reputation of one of the league’s primary set-piece experts and Wenger could well look to relieve Robin Van Persie of some of his responsibilities in this area.

Revisting that Blackburn vs Everton clash in the previous Gameweek – it’s worth noting that Junior Hoilett took on spot-kick duties with both David Dunn and Morten Gamst-Pedersen on the pitch. Jason Roberts was available, but Hoilett got the nod over him. Roberts was then off the pitch when Mauro Formica hit the post with his effort. This leaves the Blackburn Rovers spot-kick situation in flux, but we’ve given Hoilett promotion above Roberts in the pecking order, despite Saturday’s miss. New arrival Yakubu could yet have a say in this however.

Indeed, we’re still waiting on the impact of a host of new signings on the set-piece set-up. We imagine that both Samir Nasri and Juan Mata will both have a say for City and Chelsea respectively. Similarly, we’re yet to see how Steven Gerrard’s return, with the Spurs game in a fortnight the target, will influence the situation at Liverpool. Right now Charlie Adam is hogging set-plays but, we imagine that could change on Gerrard’s return to the fold.

Having established a new starting point for the season, we will work to keep this table updated and refreshed on a regular basis as the Gameweeks roll by.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thanks for the replies. Thinking of getting rid of Boswingwa after his price goes up and then using the money to upgrade my 4.0m defenders to 4.5M defenders.
    Bosingwa > Woodgate
    Hill > Ferdinand
    Briggs > Berra.

De Laet and Simpson making up the remainder.

Just out of interest, is there anyone with a fwd line of Rooney, Suarez and Jecko; a midpark consisting of Silva and Young and Baines in defence?

Having a hard time trying to get Young in there and the dearth of 5 mill defenders this year isn't helping the situation.

      I have rooney/suarez/jecko

with Nani + YaYa Toure in the midfield

      and Baines in defense

I have 3 million to spend though so I could have Toure -> Silva/Nasri

My other 3 midfields are Dyer/Moses/Barton, considering just doing Moses -> Arteta though

Yep Silva looks the main man this season.

Arteta is a little risky not yet seeing him in an AES shirt.

I'd hang onto Moses as he's one of the better 5 millers.

Yeah I'm unsure on Arteta as well.

Its all about Silva vs Nasri - I personally think that both will do well and its all a matter of who you like better! and I like Nasri because I enjoy it when he does well and then I can taunt my Arsenal fan friends! 😛

It is fun to rub it in all the bitter arsenal fans haha. "He went for the money." I wouldn't turn down a chance to double my paycheck and have a better chance at winning a trophy if I had that opportunity. It took an 8-2 loss for Wenger to bolster his squad lol...

and I have Silva cause I feel he will be more consistent and because he's my favorite player, wearing my favorite number, playing for my favorite club. I think he'll be more consistent as well. He was unlucky last weekend.

If both are fit come Saturday, who to bring in, RVP or Rooney? Currently have no Arsenal cover and only Nani from Utd.

RVP scored 4 in his last game, and has 2 in 3 for Arsenal. Admitedly Rooney is on fire right now, but RVP is still scoring with Arsenal in disarray, AND he has far better fixtures. Swaying towards RVP (and yes, i'm a gooner...)

But geez, a forward line of Van Persie/Suarez/Roondog (with RVP as a differential from all the people with Dzeko) could pull some massive scores.

Howzit - i will be honest with you if I say I think the tournament is maybe year late for players like Matfield/Smit/Bakkies/F du preez. They are past their peak. I don't like the back up locks at all. Some good players stayed in SA and Andries bekker is not there due to injury.

Klein Schalk has returned from a month injury lay off due to broken thumb so he can't be match fit either.

That's the bulk of our pack and if you struggle upfront vs Wales you bound to have a tough day. The crux of our whole tournament will rest on our no 6, Heinrich Brussouw. If he stays fit & Boks retain RWC, he will be player of the tournament.

                  Buggu mark it.

captain is a tough choice for me too...Rooney is in top form and my rival has him. I do as well, but I think City could tear up Wigan and you have Dzeko. I was gonna go with Silva or Dzeko.

I was going to ask if this meant the rules regarding second and third rises in a week have changed this time round, but then I saw he's been transferred in by almost 300,000 people this week. Cripes.

Bad move if they've scrapped that rule, a player can have one good week (admitedly Dzeko has had more than that) and shoot up in price to a ridiculous extent.

I've saved my wildcard and generally I'm pleased with that decision, I just hope someone goes on a 4-goal rampage before the next international break so I can make similar profits!

He's an okay player but I just can't understand how almost 25% of teams have him. That's over 500,000 selections for a mediocre choice. His price will probably yoyo over the next while.

It's pretty obivous: the casual player needs a cheapish midfielder, they look on the first page of transfers and see his points so far.... "ooh, this Jarvis guy must be some new hotshot player, he's got more points than Silva, Adam and Lampard"

Yeah, that's the way I see it too, though I did just check his last couple of season's scores and he's certainly in the middle of the pack points-wise compared to others, doesn't seem a bad option at the price.

two changes for me. I'm not jumping on the Dzeko/Rooney bandwagon

Torres to Suarez: Suarez has been pretty much involved in every liverpool goal
Sessgnon to Arteta: This is my risk in a sense, ARS are going to bounce back they have to after united went ape shit on them. Arteta I think will challenge RVP on set pieces. I think he will also make a fairly significant impact to Arsenal play, and pick a fair few assists/goals

I still have a bit of weakness in squad (Bent/Moses/Ferguson) which I'll sort out over the next few weeks. I doface the difficult decision of who to play in goals this week: Vorm(ARS A) or Al Habsi(MCI A). Am leaning on Al Habsi, wigan have had 2 consecutive clean sheets
