The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – It’s About Time

With just five games played out, Saturday satisfaction always looked unlikely. It’s fitting however, that with the big guns yet to be primed, we saw a handful of mid-price players come to the fore and deliver long overdue returns. Fitting and just little bit painful.

Jamie O’Hara started proceedings, blasting a dramatic equaliser to earn Wolves an unlikely point. Full of industry, creativity and threat, O’Hara has been an influential figure, without delivering returns for those brave enough to take a punt. Subject of our recent Members’ Monitor article and, just a couple of gameweek’s later, O’Hara has at last broke his duck. It was coming.

The start of something special? With City up next and three away games in four, it seems unlikely. Even so, O’Hara could yet figure on our radars should McCarthy get Wolves earning victories again.

A few hours later, Sunderland’s Stephane Sessegnon – another mid-price midfielder who has failed to live up to his pre-season billing, earned Steve Bruce three points with a victory at the Reebok.

Ironically, Sessegnon’s first goal of the season coincided with his shift back to the flank, as Bruce paired Connor Wickham and Nicklas Bendtner in his forward line. The Dane later converted a second for the Black Cats; Sessegnon providing the assist and fetching a belated 10-point return for the few thousand Fantasy managers who had kept the faith. Expect bonus points to follow on Monday morning and, with three home games in four to come, suddenly “Sess” is back in the game and blinking bright.

While Sunderland prevailed at Bolton, Yohan Cabaye also fired his first goal of the season to hand North East rivals Newcastle the points. The Frenchman is another Fantasy prospect that’s been touted as overdue returns. Having delivered just a couple of assists thus far, Cabaye gleefully converted to keep the Magpies buoyant and Wigan resigned to the relegation spots.

Unlike Sessegnon, Cabaye’s stock seems unlikely to rise from today’s success. Alan Pardew is now set to steer his happy ship through choppy waters, three away trips in four with Stoke, City and United presenting three of the toughest destinations around. Cabaye’s next significant return could be a good few weeks away.

Is anyone out there feeling smug? Is there really any Fantasy manager with O’Hara, Sessegnon and Cababye tucked away in their lineup? There can’t be many and yet, there will be plenty who have owned at least one of them previously, now pondering what might have been.

Having been threatening to return all season, the trio chose today to get off the mark – a day which seems set to see such modest scoring for many. That only fuels the frustration and makes their late delivery all the more difficult to accept.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Strange that some of the people who call Suarez a racist think it's okay/funny to call him goofy, rabbit, rodent etc.... I would imagine a white kid with buck teeth being called Goofy would be more hurt than a coloured kid being called racist names as it's more individual,
Anyway, Suarez is not the ugliest in them Prem, it's close but I think Tevez wins it by a neck... 😉

Yeah that penalty miss made a 10 point swing for Brunt. He would have been on 16pts if he scored. And for Suarez, speaking as a Suarez owner, that wasn't the case, he simply isn't a finisher and this this isn't Holland. I remember and Kezman was excellent in Holland when Mourinho signed him for us. I was speaking before about this but nobody believed me and were after me 😀

I got him in for the 3 game spell, and reckoned he was good for 20-25 pts across the 3 games. He could still do it, but today was the "easiest" of the 3 on paper. Hopefully he nicks a goal vs wbrom & then another 1 or 2 vs swansea & the bandwagon will be in full force again. Long term his place in my fwd line alongside RVP &Ade is going to either torres or aguero though.

But that;s Suarez all over, isn't it.

The most overused commentary regarding his performances is, and I quote: "And that was another golden opportunity for Suarez!". Rinse and repeat.

Won't stop me getting him in sooner or later, but this "Bad luck" thing seems to have been dragging on for the same length of time that Victor Moses "is due".

And since neither of you have linked your teams I'm assuming that you both had him in your team, and are probably 'Pool supporters.

Bringing surez in was more about playing the percentages for me. I made an assumption that liverpool would score quite a lot of goals against nor/wba/swa, and that suarez being their main forward would be heavily involved in these goals. Liverpool dont have europe as a dostraction so increases his league minutes (and freshness to an extent). He is also sub 10m freeing up funds elsewhere. So far my assumptions have been flawed, but its 90 mins into a 270 minute sample size. So whilst obviously being fruztrated im not jerking any knees just yet. Still fancy him to pick up gd pts in his next 2 games, and if he doesnt he'll be shipped out for someone who has a nicer run of form and fixtures, no great harm done. Im not a liverpool fan either lol

I'm not ruling him out at all, as I stated above, but the number of people taking hits to get him in last night/this morning and then captain him was incredibly high and I kept telling them not to do it.

So yes. I'm smug, and yes he came close (as usual) to scoring, but no way is he diving/tripping/falling over into my team until I actually see him in the sort of form that he displays when playing for his national team.

His performance today was literally pathetic. Spent most of the time appealing to some higher being when he dived or was caught offside.

So I'll watch and wait. And I'd advise you to do the same.

p.s. Nice grav, Nucky! Big fan of your work in Atlantic City. 🙂

Good for you. Dodging a bullet like that can be as good as transferring in someone who goes on to get a 15 pointer. Unfortunately im stuck with suarez for the next two games... As bad as it is that he didnt score today, the worst feeling in the game is shipping out someone prematurely & missing out on a good score. Fingers crossed suarez has justified my gamble in 2 games

All the best of luck to you, Johnny. Really.

I don't understand why you're stuck with him though. Is this a "keep the faith" sort of thing?

The worst move I made last season was to keep faith in Drogba after his bout of malaria. I should have known better but his performances after that were poor and remain so to this day.

Sometimes keeping faith in a player who isn't notching up the points can reap dividends, but other times you just need to let go.

(Feck me. I sound like a sodding priest). 😀

All this talk of RVP being rested vs stoke is pure crap! It comes from people who did not have the common sense to bring him in to their team and captain him!that is all.

+1. If Pulis continues to play him then defo YES. But at the moment Huth could easily take his place anytime.

If Wilkinson proves nailed on, then he's the best option without a doubt. Wait and see if he is nailed on though...

Otherwise, Tierney or Caulker when he is fit.

Thoughts on my sqaud with the changes

Defence relies on baines alot but the rest im happy with

    Begovic (Ruddy)

Baines N Taylor Boyata (Barnett) (Simpson)

    Mata Nani Nasri Brunt (Pilkington)

    RVP (C) Sturrige Adebayor

    Heres a poser.

    Kompany + Adebayor

    or

    Aguero + 5m def (possibly Assou-Ekotto)

Deciding factors for me would likely be that i already have VDV and Aguero brings an additional serious captaincy option.

Aguero & £5m defender I think - can see Aguero having a big impact in the next few weeks and there's some value around for £5m defenders

Ahhhh, so glad I got my I-will-not-have-a-Liverpool-player-in-my-team-this-year-ah-f**k-it-I'll-chance-it GW over with early in the year. On the plus side, at least I wasn't one of those lads who were taking Rooney out for Suarez this morning 😯

Tbh it would have been really easy for those who have never owned Suarez before, but I had experience of his inconsistency so I stayed well away and stuck with RVP.
