The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Double-barrelled

Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s left-foot ensured that the double gameweek had the impact we’d anticipated, but there can be no doubt the he was an unexpected source of satisfaction.

A 30-yard screamer, deflecting off Tim Cahill’s posterior, marked the closest Everton’s Aussie has got to getting his name on the scoresheet this season. Assou-Ekotto has gone one better than the Socceroo, rightly claiming a stunning strike, although his application for goal of the season will surely be turned down thanks to Cahill’s intervention.

With 10% ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game, after over 40,000 transfers in for Gameweek 20, Assou-Ekotto has clearly provided a major boost to a fair slice of Fantasy managers. Those who missed out on tonight’s goal, assist and clean sheet bonanza can at least take some comfort from the fact that such returns were far from signposted. The Cameroon international had scored just one league goal in his previous five seasons – he had mustered just a single shot on target this term before this evening.

It was surely Assou-Ekotto’s price tag, rather than his proven attacking prowess, behind his selection for Tottenham’s double Gameweek. His investors could hardly have expected a profit of 21 point (24 with the inevitable bonus) for their punt.

All the expectation was instead laid at the door of Gareth Bale, Rafael Van der Vaart and Emmanuel Adebayor. While the two of that trio managed to scratch together an assist of Tottenham’s two matches, Adebayor was a major let down; just two goal attempts, both off target, saw the Togo striker do little to justify the FPL armband.

For many, the first double gameweek passed as a non-event – a reminder that the hype and over investment so often involved, can slap us in the face. And yet, ironically, the unlikely profit from Assou-Ekotto demonstrates just how that extra transfer, perhaps even a 4-point hit, can pay off spectacularly when the doubles come around.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

not to sound too stalkerish, but i see you had only brought in jones recently and enjoyed his -2 performance. ouch.

yeah simpson 1st deffo. was trying to see if you could start him.

though its a tough task, i think you gotta put caulker next in the hopes swansea can do what they do at home. moses would have been an automatic last choice but city's defense isnt at full strength. still give caulker the edge though.

    Morning guys,

Why are board members holding their WC until GW 24?

    Is it a double gameweek??

I am tempted to use mine now.

Have Wilkinson,Kompany,Ba out, Gower not playing,Silva doubtful, and Adebayor ineligible next week.

Your situation does indicate a WC might be useful, given the number of outages you have.

      It's possible.
      BAE 3bp: certain
Lennon 2bp: 1 goal (shot on target) and only 1 shot off target, yellow doesn't matter so much.
1 bp: VDV is the only one with assist but he had 3 shots off target & none on target, don't think he'll get any.
Bale had 1 shot on target & 1 off target, a chance of bonus.

BUT I think a defender will get the 1 bp. Clean sheet and all. Maybe Friedel.

I think he's a good pick, he seems to have the bit between his teeth and with WBA's fixtures easing up and Brunt out he seems the best of an admittedly bad baggie bunch . The two toughish away games after this week give me pause but if you're in it for a one week thing or six week thing then I think he's a good shout.

Shaun Wright-Phillips is coming on to my radar.

Hughes as always liked a winger and Bentley/Duff etc have had quite decent returns playing under him.

QPR's fixtures aren't too shabby either.

Yeah that's the one thing that puts off, but think if he's chucked out wide again he might prove more useful (believe Warnock has played him central/behind striker a couple of times?)

if liverpool do make the CC final they have a midweek slot straight after where their game could be slotted in.....but the game is everton at home so police may advise to wait for a weekend slot where they can fit it in for an early kick off

so any potential double week would be later in the season in amongst their nice run of fixtures from 28 onwards

think im going to gamble on this being the case when i wildcard next week and plan a team that takes me up until gwk27 then use my 2nd wildcard as thats when utd and liverpools fixtures improve and man citys turn shocking

probably not of use to alot of you but thought id share....

yeh, thinking of trebling on man city 22-27 and then liverpool 28 onwards

unless of course aguero n silva go mad monday n then i may re-think but expect city to start grinding out results a bit more over the next month or two

Not sure I see RvP as a 'must have' for January wildcards. He has started to show signs of understandable fatigue from months of carrying Arsenal's attacking threat. They have some challenging fixtures on the horizon too. My preferred route is Aguero plus two budget strikers and spend the money on the midfield.

I'm thinking he'll start, he came on against united and started against Liverpool, even though both cup games.

If it looks like he won't start I'll switch him with Evans or juggle stockdale with krul and bring in a better defender.

I think Gerrard will be in the hole for Liverpool and they have three nice GWs coming up, it's him Mata or Dempsey

Chelsea are playing attacking football but not scoring as many goals to justify Mata's price. I'm holding my breath until the day Torres returns to half of his old self, that is when I'll welcome the Spanish duo into my team.

The positions are not that good, and he does well for a man with his heatmap. Not to mention he has the stamina of a Kenyan runner.

Well, I meant good enough for a midfielder. His great stamina makes him dangerous towards the end of games where he just runs straight at opponent's defense.

            -mata play as winger
-he got most key passes in prem league
-he taking corrners and free kicks
-it's not his fault cause torres can finissh(and torres will stop his poor form)

ramires play as defensive midelfilder and he score lucky goals
