The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Double-barrelled

Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s left-foot ensured that the double gameweek had the impact we’d anticipated, but there can be no doubt the he was an unexpected source of satisfaction.

A 30-yard screamer, deflecting off Tim Cahill’s posterior, marked the closest Everton’s Aussie has got to getting his name on the scoresheet this season. Assou-Ekotto has gone one better than the Socceroo, rightly claiming a stunning strike, although his application for goal of the season will surely be turned down thanks to Cahill’s intervention.

With 10% ownership in the Fantasy Premier League game, after over 40,000 transfers in for Gameweek 20, Assou-Ekotto has clearly provided a major boost to a fair slice of Fantasy managers. Those who missed out on tonight’s goal, assist and clean sheet bonanza can at least take some comfort from the fact that such returns were far from signposted. The Cameroon international had scored just one league goal in his previous five seasons – he had mustered just a single shot on target this term before this evening.

It was surely Assou-Ekotto’s price tag, rather than his proven attacking prowess, behind his selection for Tottenham’s double Gameweek. His investors could hardly have expected a profit of 21 point (24 with the inevitable bonus) for their punt.

All the expectation was instead laid at the door of Gareth Bale, Rafael Van der Vaart and Emmanuel Adebayor. While the two of that trio managed to scratch together an assist of Tottenham’s two matches, Adebayor was a major let down; just two goal attempts, both off target, saw the Togo striker do little to justify the FPL armband.

For many, the first double gameweek passed as a non-event – a reminder that the hype and over investment so often involved, can slap us in the face. And yet, ironically, the unlikely profit from Assou-Ekotto demonstrates just how that extra transfer, perhaps even a 4-point hit, can pay off spectacularly when the doubles come around.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Not harsh, fair, and completely blinded I'm afraid. Could post another A4 team with RvP Aguero Adebayor / Yak / Sturridge (Midfield: Dempsey, Nani, Silva, Bale, McClean), but I'm taking a chance, and I have a good feeling about it. 🙂

        Wopz. Last one is Dempsey.

As far as Santon goes - easily swappable with Simpson and Williamson. So far it seems he'll start, so I'm going for him instead. Newcastle has great fixture.

Valencia - best manu midfielder in terms of attack threat. Nani is more finesse, doesn't get rewarded for that at FLP. Valencia will be traded after the Bolton game. 😉

Silva - had him since he was at, what, 9 mil? Not gonna trade him out.

Odemthingie - I have a better feeling about him than an injured Sturridge or the overrated Yak, plus he could be a good differential.

Gerrard - differential, and because other alternatives (Nasri / Sess / Walters / Ramires) seemed less appealing.

Trust me on this one guys, you'll get burned playing RvP against Swansea at home. 🙂

          sturridge is back in training...

nani has way more shots at goal and is more explosive...val will get rotated once young is back guaranteed

odemthingie is overrated and plays for a cack team

gerrard is nearing the end of his career his fitness is nowhere near where it should be and is bound for rotation

santon is a punt at best watch how ull get burned by zero to 1 point per gw

why on earth r u putting the dilemma to bench dempsey, it just goes to show without rvp ur team is nowhere near as strong as mine and i haven't even WC'ded

Gerrard is on for 3 games, mr; he's not a season stayer. 😉 His side is picking up, and without Suarez he'll be a threat, not only at pens.

If not Santon, then Simpson. I have no problem replacing a Newcastle defender, and trust me, you should have one with the price they're at. I simply prefer Santon over Simpson or Williamson at the moment, but I still have time to decide that.

Benking Dempsy for my one week player Odemthingie to rack it up. It's a gamble, but I haven't gambled enough this season.

Nani - pf. He's played like a zombie as of late. So many bad choices. That Valencia is worse as a player is easy to see, but he's in better form, and his style of play is more suited for FLP points - he's more direct. For two mil less, he's money well spent.

That's good to hear. I don't doubt he'll play, but there's always uncertainty over how you'll play after an injury. You can be on fire, or a shadow of yourself. So, I decided to go with Welbeck instead - at 6.6 and against Bolton, I can't see that as a bad choice. 🙂

Moyes will have to play Drenthe imo, but you could always go for a punt on Ben Arfa. I would keep Komps, you probably want him in after the spurs game anyway. Im in the same situation as yourself with a very similar team. Though, Im not so sure about using my WC next week all of a sudden. Tempted to wait until the final deadline ahead of gw24...

    Vorm - Lindegaard

Well i had VDV for a long while in my team before i got rid during his annoying non-returns, but today he looked great, and he's playing like 90 minute games which is practically unheard of for him, i just havea feeling he is going to churn out big scored once again, and he's like silva, turns up for big games also. its him or gerrard, i'm 0.1 off gerrard though, so dont know who to downgrade if i wanted him, originally ive got silva where vdv is right now.

guys i'm kinda confused with january wildcard, can i use this for gameweek 24? (that is when tottenham face liverpool)

The January Wildcard can only be used after Gameweek 20 starts (2 Jan 11:30) until Gameweek 23 ends (4 Feb 11:30); as the January wildcard isn't available until after the Gameweek 20 deadline, the earliest these transfers will be active is Gameweek 21.

Gotta make a decision to WC tonight or not guys, travelling to India tomorrow.

    That's my current team:

    Vorm (Ruddy)
BAE | Simpson | Jones (Kompany | Wilkinson)
Nani | Silva | Bale | Dyer (Osman)
    RVP | Sturridge | Adebayor.

I have 5 players that are a doubt to play: Kompany, Wilkinson, Silva, Osman, Sturridge

solid, guess you are backing HBA to come good, and i think he will. your keepers dont rotate very well from gw28 (or at least around that) and till the end of the season.

I was ranked at 159,000. I got 59 points after hit and have had a small red arrow (down to 174,000). The average was 54 points. Assuming I get 3 BAPs for BAE, you reckon this will be enough to avoid a red arrow? I know it's trivial but hey it's nice 🙂

I'm sure those 100k places make all the difference, the scores of players aren't uniform but should be much more competitive the closer you get to the top. How much of a red arrow did you get at what rank?

    Drenthe>Ben Arfa (already playing Warnock)

Silva to Gerrard (I'd only lose .2 on Silva and I think I might go without when I wildcard anyway)

The thing is I'd probably captain Gerrard, as I don't really fancy any of my other options.

Ben Arfa had been the plan before Silva's injury but I really don't like having 3 players potentially missing when there's a wildcard available. Gerrard will almost certainly start and Ben Arfa could miss out if Pardew opts for 2 big guys up front.

Tip of the week, since it seems so many are blinded by RvP. Attackers have ups and downs. Rooney had a long dry period. Aguero fell out of favour for a while. RvP was dead until gameweek 6, then had a good running for around 8 gameweeks when Arsenal had to pull themselves together, and at which time also Walcott was on fire. Does that mean he'll keep his form like that throughout the season? Nope. I think he's begun to look less and less energetic. Perhaps the Henry entrance will revitalise him, but I think it's time for those of us trailing 100 or so points behind the leaders to take a chance and go for the strikers whose form will rise.

Hehe, it's a difficult trigger to pull! I know. I've been thinking of it for 4 weeks, ever since I started recognising some symptoms I have on the pitch in his play.

If you want to do it, and if you got him after the insane price rise, I would do it now or never. He's got two tough games ahead, after which--at least fixture wise--things look more promising.

Fair point on form, it's just that RVP is the target man for Arsenal supply - all roads lead to him. He will get chances and even when not at 100% he'll put some away. He is uniquely in having such a privileged status at a top six team. It's the same with Ba, their target man, prolific as hell and scores an astonishing % of their goals. Also RVP has had a good rest. Don't drop until you see him play again.

Good points. But, I'm afraid many will be disappointed yet another week now that they'll play the unpenetrable defense of Swansea at home. Then comes United next gameweek. Can easily become a bleak affair for RvP owners. 😛 I think I will have better faith in him from gameweek 24 and on.

Good luck with keeping him. 🙂 I truly hopes he starts delivering, although I can't see that happening for another 2-3 gameweeks personally.

Since I'm here.. team for gw21 anyone?

    Krul
    Simpson BAE Baines
    Nani(vc) HBA VdV Bale
    RvP Sturridge Berbatov(c)

    Vorm, JEvans, Walters, Wilkinson

Berbatov was a moment of madness last week.. may have been drunk (honest). Still, since he's here I'm going to captain him on the off chance he does play the 90, (vc) on Nani in case no.

I know I should play JEvans, but who in place of? Leaving Baines on the bench would be hard to do, same with Berbatov given that I've bought him in, albeit stupidly.

    Suggestions?

Defensive move in store for the weekend? Currently have:

    Ruddy (Sorensen)

    NTaylor Simpson Assou-Ekotto (Caulker Kompany)

Playing in a monthly H2H for high end brews. Got a good jump on opponents thanks to Benoit. Opponents have Vorm and I'm pretty sure they will all play him so I'm OK with NTaylor as he has helped me match their output all season. Thinking I'll cash in on my measly 0.1 from Ruddy.

    Ruddy to Krul

    or
