Champions League – Matchday Seven – This Much We Know, Part 2

Cristiano Ronaldo scores another for Madrid. Andre Villas-Boas has a night to forget at the Stadio San Paolo as Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi tear Chelsea apart, while two Champions League heavyweights suffer a first-leg deficit on the road. Here’s our round up of the European action as Matchday Seven finally came to a close…

AVB On The Brink

As confirmed in yesterday’s Scout Scribbles, Chelsea’s trip to Napoli didn’t get off to the best of starts, when confirmation filtered through that John Terry required exploratory surgery on his on-going knee problem. The day didn’t end much better, either.

A 3-1 defeat in the Stadio San Paolo will only add fuel to talk in the media of an early Stamford Bridge exit for Andre Villas-Boas, as the young manager walks the precarious tightrope of employment found under the stewardship of the notoriously impatient Roman Abramovich. The Blues continued presence in the Champions League seemed, to many, to be one of Villas-Boas’ saving graces in the eyes of the Russian oligarch; this first leg defeat will not have served to have helped matters.

As for the on-pitch action, things started nigh-on perfectly for the visitors, when Juan Mata -doing our Matchday preview some justice- found himself on the penalty spot to capitalise on a back-pass/bobbly pitch combination and tuck the ball away.

Chelsea more than held their own through much of the game, in fact, but the effervescent power of the Napoli strike-force eventually overcame the Blues’ back-four. Ezequiel Lavezzi levelled affairs with a sumptuous strike from outside the box, then, not to be outdone, Edinson Cavani had just the right amount of nous and gumption to shoulder home a pitch perfect cross past Petr Cech just before half time.

The South American pair then combined for the third half-way through the second period, as Cavani set up Lavezzi to dumbfound David Luiz before finding the net. Cavani ended the match with 11 points, just pipping Lavezzi’s 10.

Even the tactic of purposefully leaving behind fake line-ups in hotel rooms couldn’t help Villas-Boas in the end, however. With an away goal in their pocket Chelsea aren’t out of the tie just quite yet, but the London outfit will certainly need a sharp turnaround in form before the reverse fixture next month.

CRISTIANO RONALDO SCORES GOALS

A comfortable game in uncomfortable conditions afforded Jose Mourinho’s runaway La Liga leaders a 1-1 result that wasn’t particularly reflective of their performance. It left the Real Madrid manager with a smile on his face, though, as his side came away from Russia relatively unscathed, with a home game in warmer climes to follow.

Mourinho had Cristiano Ronaldo to thank for Real’s only goal. The Portuguese superstar opened the scoring for the visitors, picking up his fourth goal of the campaign in his fifth appearance. As the boys at Opta kindly pointed out, the former United winger has now bagged a mere 111 goals in 109 League and European matches.

European Fantasy managers who opted for Madrid front-line alternatives to Ronaldo will feel slightly hard done by. Karim Benzema was unfortunate enough to be withdrawn through injury inside a quarter of an hour, while replacement Gonzalo Higuain could or should really have been flying home with some kind of points tally.

Pontus Wernbloom (despite having a name more akin to a Pirates of the Caribbean character than a Swede making his debut in sub-zero Russian temperatures) gave the attending Muscovites plenty to cheer about. His injury time goal crushed many European Fantasy managers’ clean sheets in the process, yours truly included.

A trip to the Bernabeu awaits CSKA and, while realistic expectations will favour Mourinho’s men to come out very much on top, the omens are better than one might expect if history is anything to go by. CSKA have twice before faced Spanish sides in two-legged games and, on both occasions, they drew at home before winning the away leg. We’re just putting that out there.

RECENT FINALISTS, CURRENT STRUGGLERS

The 2009/10 season was the one year in recent history where the Champions League final was completely void of Barcelona altogether. Bayern Munich and Inter Milan were instead the two sides involved in the showdown at the Bernabeu, with the latter eventually wining 2-0.

Cut to a little short of two years later and European fortunes are less than stellar for the German and Italian heavyweights. They both suffered 0-1 away defeats at the hands of “lesser” Gallic sides FC Basel and Marseille – the French team getting the better of Inter and the Swiss outfit having the first leg advantage on the Bundesliga side.

Only one of the Inter starting XI had found the net this calendar year and that man, Maicon, was substituted at half time for Yuto Nagatomo. It was frankly no surprise, given their recent performances, that the result didn’t favour the Italians and is indicative of a downturn in form that has seen Claudio Ranieri’s side draw one and lose six of their last seven fixtures.

By comparison, Bayern are in far less of a crisis. Granted, they are not (like Inter) 14 points off the top of their domestic league but Jupp Heynckes’ side are trailing last year’s winners Borussia Dortmund and could face a second season in a row without the title- something that hasn’t occurred in Germany for nigh-on almost sixteen seasons.

This is all without mentioning the home sides. Both Basel and Marseille were worthy winners and travel away in a fortnight’s time with confidence buoyed by last night’s performances. The ties are still wide open, but, thanks to late goals from Andre Ayew (Marseilles) and substitute Valentin Stocker (Basel), confidence will only be growing, as 90 minutes and a goal advantage separates these two sides from the quarter finals.

Champions League Group A Match day 1 Preview

    Man City (Newman-cini) V Napoli (Tommytour59)

The Group of Death kicks of with two managers currently inside the top 15k with top 10K finish’s last season in what looks likely to be a closely fought battle. With similar sides, home advantage (4 points) could well be vital so City should just edge this one. The Aguero / Ba captaincy choice could be vital.

    Injury / Team News
Man City – With Lindegaard out still Vorm will retain his spot in goal, Enrique misses a game this week but is likely to remain in the squad for rest of the campaign, Valencia is the main worry with Dyer as back up, it is likely he will be replaced with Sessegnon the likely candidate to come in.
Napoli – Richards took a knock midweek, which could see him being rested so Caulker is on the standby to step in. The other dilemma is whether to play Krul/Mignolet with Simpson locked in at the back.

    Predicted Line Ups
Man City – Vorm / Kelly Kompany Simpson / Bale Silva Dempsey Sess / Aguero Ba RVP
Napoli – Krul / Simpson Richards Shawcross / Bale Silva Dempsey Moses / Aguero Ba RVP

    Match Verdict – Home win

Villareal (TW) V Bayern Munich (Back to Back Ballacks)

This match up is FPL Veteran Vs Rookie, with an impressive history and currently in the top 11K B2BB is the overwhelming favourite here. However with home advantage TW (rank 80K) will be looking to pull off an upset and prove he isn’t the group whipping boy. It’s a tale of two strike forces with Ba Aguero (TW) Vs Zamora Rooney, which will surely decide this tie.

    Injury / Team News
Villareal – With Jose Enrique out and Richards doubtful a defensive change could be made this week.
Bayern – With Huth suspended and Richards also in line for a start Caulker may well come off the bench. Rooney has a sore throat but surely some Soothers will ensure he make it.

    Predicted Line Ups
Villareal – Sorenson / Richards Simpson Taiwo / Dempsey Sessegnon Bale Silva / Ba Aguero RVP
Bayern Munich – Sorenson / Richards Taiwo Simpson / Dempsey Bale Silva Siggy / Zamora Rooney Van Persie

    Match Verdict – Home win

I got the joke, just didn't know who you referring to with the 0 assists/goals. Downing's inclusion is poor but perhaps Pearce thinks they are short on players who are capable of playing on the left so there may be some twisted logic to it.

As an American, I find it odd why Brits constantly starve the Three Lions with the inside-the-FA; hoodwinkery and tomfoolery (no pun) of the team selection. All is well until you get to the midfield selections:

Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Stewart Downing (Liverpool), Adam Johnson (Manchester City), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), James Milner (Manchester City), Scott Parker (Tottenham Hotspur), Ashley Young (Manchester United), Theo Walcott (Arsenal).

Now as an Arsenal supporter, it could be understood if Walcott was left out, it should be about beating the team in front of you...

Downing and Barry don't do that...mechanical working wing and and over-hyped do-nothing.

Cleverley...injured and has not truly proven anything in the period leading up...'yeah he was hurt' tough sh*t!

Steven Gerrard is the only one that could be left on for "legendary" value.

Young: too injured. And takes long breaks when he isn't injured.

Scott Parker: Is interesting, because as good as he looks and as hard as he works he is truly only valuable as a holding mid...I have more creativity in a toenail I cut two weeks ago. England should be past recruiting players that hoof balls out of danger. I'm rather certain that if Scott Parker looked like Wayne Rooney he wouldn't have gotten a call-up.

Theo Walcott: Remember, I am a Gooner...this guy lacks any defensive desire and any BRAIN...not to mention any creativity or the ability to think 'ahead of the game' (see anticipation) in the final 1/3. I would have been happy to see AOC here but again the problem with England selection is the sheer lack of ruthlessness and preoccupation with the appearance of 'fairness'

So in the end, Adam Johnson is 100% deserving of his place...he gets it done with very little love or caressing of his ego. Yet the squad lacks players that can actually keep possession...and will soon revert to hoofing and having Rooney and Welbeck coming back 20+ yards to play a 4-6-0 formation. And see about 40% of possession against Holland if they're lucky.

Scott Parker doesn't just hoof the ball out of danger - he covers the entire back four with challenges, blocks and clearances - if you need a holding mid (which most teams do) then you aren't going to get better than Parker. And where is this creativity coming from? There is no English player like Mata, Silva or Modric - unless you drop Rooney deep perhaps.

      Adam Johnson is awful.

By far the biggest omission from the midfield is Carrick who has been outstanding this year.

Which is why he is average at best as a holding mid...the game has progressed to the point of just hoofing...possession starts with him.

creativity comes after he has possession...world-class holding mids do more than just hoof, they actually stop facing the beach and turn into the possible wave to find friends.

Adam Johnson is not "awful" don't know what you have to substantiate that...

Carrick is quite possibly a bad omission, but remember the ability (and respect...which many times buys them space) of the forward moving teammates buys him more time and space than most holding mids get...many would also say that he is one of the few that always has a 'plan' before the ball gets to him in most situation.

English football always seems to toss the fast players wide and the slower player inside. The shorter, decently paced players that corner well like sports cars seem to get just get thrown wherever.

But Parker is a defensive midfielder - defensive being the operative word there.
Look at Spurs clean sheet stats from previous seasons and look at this one - he's made a ridiculous impact.

He's not Modric on the ball - but who is in the England line-up? You can criticise him for lacking creativity but we have no alternative begging to be played there.

Adam Johnson is awful as he is the archetypal English winger, pace and poor decision making. And he goes missing in big games and smaller games. He's the most Match of The Day player I've ever seen - look great when you show him doing the occasional thing but rubbish if you watch 90 mins.

The thing with Johnson is, hes built up from his cameo's for City. Firstly u have to ask why he isnt playing regularly, and its probably because he isnt capable of much more than a cameo, hes not consistant enough. Its easy to say "look how well he did when he came on" but its fine to have a 10 second moment of magic in a 15min cameo than in a 90min match where the rest of it he will probably go missing and not do his duty to the team.

I agree with you somewhat, but at some point you have to see what he can get you with minutes. He is a bit of a short track bully as Mac says above. But seriously, rough-housing your way through Holland with working wingers and contract season effort darlings ain't gonna get it.

To be honest I wouldn't read too much into Mancini only giving him cameos because Roberto is a bit of an idiot.

Johnson started the Fulham game recently and did pretty well. He "anticipated contact" and won a penalty if memory serves me correctly. Maybe he can anticipate some more contact for England at the Euros.

Looking at the options with only 0.1 in the bank Walters looks like the best option for the next 2 even though he and Stoke off form. Cabaye/Gutierrez could also be an option with one eye on GW 29 aswell.

Yeah I'm in the same boat, only 8.5 to spend and the options are very limited. Only really Sigurddson or McClean interst me but I already have Sessegnon and Dyer. If Walters is up front again, you'd never know he may fluke some jammy points in these next 2 games.

Mata over Dempsey and Santon over caulker seems like the higher upside pick, The main problem people seem to have with team 1 is the lack or Aguero but unless he does a RVP wont the other picks more than cover him?

Would team 1 look better if Santon -> Cahil?

Doesn't really change much in my opinion. I see Santon outscoring Cahill, barring a Cahill goal (how likely is this though?). Have a look at my comments on Mata and Dzeko above!

    Advise please

Tony V injured, Rooney a doubt,
    1) Simple - just play Moses & Kelly/Caulker and Save Transfer
    2) Are you having a giraffe - Tony V & Richards to Yaya & Jones. Already Have Evans and Silva

      Rooney will play!

2 if they are for free but with Raylor or Cahill/Ivanovic instead of Jones.
