Euro 2012

Euro 2012 Team Analysis – Czech Republic

With Roy Hodgson already coming under fire for his Euro 2012 squad selection, it seems a perfectly topical time to get our coverage for next month’s tournament underway. We’re rolling out preview articles on all 16 participants, starting with our assessment of the Czech Republic…

The Czechs kick off their Group A campaign with a 7.45pm match against Russia on Friday June 8, the opening day of the tournament. Four days later, Michal Bilek’s men then pit their wits against Greece in the early kick-off at 5pm, before facing co-hosts Poland in their final group game on Saturday June 16 at 7.45pm.

The most open group of all, there’s no real stand-out certainties amongst the contenders, with any of the four looking capable of progressing to the knock-out stage. Greece were the most impressive qualifiers, finishing unbeaten and top of a six-team group that included Croatia. Russia also led the way over Republic of Ireland in their group, losing just once over 10 games, while Poland will be hoping their home backing can spur them on to at least the final eight.

The Road to Qualification

Bilek’s side were handed the most unenviable task of all in qualifying, drawn alongside defending champions Spain in a five-team group. While their record includes three losses from eight games, they were beaten home and away by Vicente Del Bosque’s side, in addition to a surprise defeat in their opening home clash with Lithuania. They managed just three clean sheets – picked up home and away against Liechtenstein and at home to Scotland – and scored 12 goals, conceding eight. Placed second in the group, they squared up to Montenegro in the play-offs and cruised through 3-0 on aggregate.

Most Appearances: Kadlec (10), Cech, Hubnik, Rosicky & Plasil (9)

Top Scorers: Kadlec (4), Rezek & Plasil (2)

Top Assists: Rosicky (6)

The Likely Lads

There’s nothing quite like a penalty-taking defender to whet the appetite. Michal Kadlec fits the bill here, having finished qualifying as top scorer with four goals – three of those as a result of converted spot-kicks. The Bayer Leverkusen man is the left-back in Bilek’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation and, priced at 5.5 in the McDonalds Euro 2012 game, is 0.5 dearer than any other member of the Czech’s backline. He offers a decent creative streak, too, finishing the recent Bundesliga campaign with four assists to his name.

Tomas Rosicky is the main creator. Playing in the hole behind a lone forward or in a deeper central midfield role, the Arsenal man picked up six assists over his nine appearances during qualifying and is also on free-kicks. His McDonalds price of 7.0 is the joint-costliest in the squad, though he arrives in strong form, with three assists in his last five for Arsenal. If injury should blight Rosicky’s game time, it’s worth noting that Bilek has recently revealed Daniel Kolar is his second-choice playmaker.

While he failed to impress in the qualifiers with just a single goal from seven appearances, Milan Baros looks set to lead the line. Priced at 7.0 in the McDonalds game, his top-level experience should see him get the nod over the likes of David Lafata, though the latter is clearly the player in form, having scored 25 goals in 27 games for Czech side Jablonec this past season.

Cheeky Punt

Roman Hubnik comes in at just 4.5 in the McDonalds game, 0.5 cheaper than his central defensive partner Tomas Sivok. Hubnik missed just one game over the qualifiers – through suspension – and also grabbed a goal. Sivok, however, has the greater attacking potential of the pair; his record of six goals in 40 games for Besiktas in 2011/12 attests to that. With an extra point for every 5 recovered balls in the McDonalds game, the centre halves could well prosper, with Hubnik offering the best value route into the Czech’s backline. Petr Cech, at 5.0, is the most popular keeper in the game so far, with over 33% ownership, while Hubnik has been snapped up by just 0.7% in comparison.

Jaroslav Plasil looks to be on corner kicks and is one of his side’s most trusted lieutenants. Playing all but one of the qualifying matches, he scored twice and comes in at 6.5. Although he plies his trade as a central midfielder for Bordeaux, Plasil is likely to feature wide right for the Czechs and could be a decent differential – he currently has just 1.2% ownership compared to Rosicky’s 24.8%. Jan Rezek is likely to play on the left of the attacking midfield three but has been classified as a forward in McDonalds – despite his two goals in five appearances and price of 6.0, Fantasy managers are likely to steer clear as a result.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I should already know this seeing as I played UCL, but I just want to make sure I fully understand...

Can someone tell me in layman's terms what is actually meant by a 'recovered ball'?

According to the rules it is 'the total clearances completed and gaining possession tackles'.

Yeah I had a look at the rules but I'm still none the wiser.

Maybe I'm just a bit thick. It's a definite possibility.

Surviving the FPL addiction of 2012-13
    - wipe the slate clean and be open minded
    - never, ever buy a Norwich player under SGW circumstances
    - never buy a Wigan or Everton player till February (Jelavic and Pienaar to be monitored)
    - never captain a defender
    - never take a hit for a SGW defender
    - always look to play 3 at the back
    - punt on the team, not the captain
    - buy value defenders (4-6 million) for predictable clean sheets and guaranteed starts; never buy a defender (or pay extra) for purely attacking reasons
    - when deciding on defenders: clean sheets > goal threat
    - avoid using transfers on the back 7
    - TRY and stick rigidly to a defensive strategy until the first WC
    - fail to plan; plan to fail - plans can always be abandoned and they help to lessen hits
    - don't be swayed by fear
    - always have players and captains playing as late as poss (personal choice)
    - don't be afraid to cut losses - points > pride
    - even if declared clinically insane, never purchase and captain Emmanuel Adebayor
    - on a multiple DGW never risk going conservative (better that the hit was a mistake than be regretful of missing out on a MAJOR haul)
    - avoid doubling or trebling defensively 99.9% of the time partly due to stress and quota reasons
    - purchase Newcastle's no.9 - even if it's Darius Henderson
    - avoid West Brom players, but keep an eye on McAuley and Andrew's prices
    - avoid purchasing "clever" picks, Fantasy Island Risks, Nicky Butt Funny Feelings
    - no matter the frustration and losing value of a player, take a deep breath and consider very, very carefully whether to cut the chord
    - hits and chasing points are occasionally good for the soul - just avoid knee jerking so much that a grant from The Ministry of Silly Walks may be required
    - never buy a Stoke City GK (but keep an eye out for Marc Wilson's classification and price)
    - team balance is essential, so avoid loading up on "promoted fillers" but always have a captain choice
    - buy the cheapest keepers possible that rotate - if in doubt and an emergency, buy Al Habsi
    - always have the 8th attacker as first sub
    - don't get obsessed with fixtures, don't get obsessed with form
    - don't get obsessed with "coverage"
    - no one is essential or a "season keeper" (not even RVP, particularly if he's priced ridiculously)
    - find the cheapest defensive coverage for Sunderland asap, but don't pay through the nose
    - avoid unpredictable and injury prone players
    - always look to be flexible with transfers, have a kitty and save 2 frees whenever poss
    - don't get too attached to value or players' past conquests
    - avoid "differentials" for the sake of it
    - avoid focussing on rivals' teams
    - rely on defensive autosubs even if it affects team colour co-ordination
    - don't take a player's lack of success personally (bloody difficult)
    - if SAF says a Utd player has broken his leg and is out for the season, this translates to "starting next game"
    - try not to take it too seriously
    - save the WC for a potential DGW bonanza (see "planning and preparation" section)
    - avoid certain bagonwheels
    - book councilling sessions in preparation of a new "Raylor"
    - constantly play it safe and boring - points and ranking > fun
    - never, ever - no matter how tempting - go for a SGW, 1 week punt unless a WC is being activated the next GW
    - resist the inevitable temptation to WC in the early weeks
    - remember this game is purely skill, strategy and playing the odds! 😉
    - pick up on patterns a lot quicker, such as: Dempsey at home, Terry scoring after making the news, Stoke playing dreadful on a Sunday post-Europa
    - consider that for the first time since October 2010, Chelsea attackers may become in vogue for SGW circumstances again
    - treat every FT as preciously as a new born
    - don't get distracted by pictures of Christina Hendricks

ok lads basically my problem is this.

I use the 'atlernate' controller settings so R2 sprints, or at least, it should. When I try and sprint without the ball I have no issue (tested in the arena) but when I try and sprint with it my player actually slows down to walking pace, making it damn near impossible to actually do anything.

Have I messed up my controller settings by mistake, is it a profile issue or do I just need to invest in a new controller?

        http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/may/15/rio-ferdinand-roy-hodgson-england-euro-2012?CMP=twt_gu

"The official line Hodgson will use is that it is purely because Ferdinand is now 33 and has suffered from recurrent back and calf injuries over the past three seasons. However, a dismayed Ferdinand is convinced it is directly linked to his issues with Terry and the potential divisions that might have been caused if the two centre-backs were both involved."

Personally I think that if someone is up on racism charges for alleged racist abuse in the workplace, then they could easily be suspended (on full pay) until the court case. And definitely not representing their country (which is only a bonus anyway).

I sort of agree. If it was simply a case of he could only choose to bring either Rio or Terry, I would favour bringing Rio (not based on talent).

Yes it did. It was 4Vets' after 2nd wildcard league where I got destroyed. The reason being is that I didn't get Clint Dempsey and doubled on FUL/STO defence. I won't be doing that again.

eBay has reported that a record 25000 Chelsea shirts were listed over a 2 hour period this week.

Apparently statisticians have been investigating this unusual market trend for 3 days now but in a statement, a spokesman said he was confident they are getting closer to an explanation.

He added: "So far we've established that they have all been sold by new Manchester City fans."

Lampard is England's peno taker if he starts, if not Gerrard or Young are the most logical choices if we assume Baines won't start. Who knows with Rooney until after his suspension.

Lindegaard doesn't start and has an awful group. Abate doesn't start, not sure on Strinic. Midfield looks good, but don't bother with Ronaldo who has an awful group and underperforms badly for the national team, Jelavic is not a starter, think Eduardo and Mandzukic are the starting strikers for Croatia.

I have to say, I think this is the worst England squad I have seen in a major championship.

Only 2 maybe 3 class players.

We'll see. I think we'll do pretty well, especially if Parker is fit. It will be ugly defensive effective football 🙂

Agree - defence is probably ok but midfield and strikers are really poor. 4 strikers - one banned for 2 games and the other 3 have only been bit-part players all season with their clubs

After Stewart Downing's inclusion in the England sqaud, I think they should name a street in his honour, where all people who are shit at their jobs and got selected when no-one wants them should live. Hang on...

    Love it 😉
