Euro 2012

Euro 2012 Team Analysis – Greece

Yesterday saw our coverage of the upcoming Euro 2012 tournament in Poland and Ukraine get under way with a look at the Czech Republic’s Fantasy prospects. Staying with Group A, then, it’s time to bring Euro 2004 champions Greece under the microscope:

Fernando Santos’ side are pitted against Poland in the tournament opener, kicking off at 5pm on Friday June 8. They continue their campaign four days later by squaring up to the Czech Republic at 5pm before facing Russia in their final group match on Saturday June 16 at 7.45pm.

Any one of the four countries involved in Group A look to have a chance of finishing in the top two. The Czech Republic secured their place in this summer’s tournament with a play-off win against Montenegro after finishing second in qualifying behind Spain, Russia grabbed top spot in their group at the expense of the Republic of Ireland, while Poland take their place as co-hosts, and will be buoyed by the backing of the home crowd.

The Road to Qualification

Greece were amongst the automatic qualifiers, finishing top of their group ahead of Croatia – seven wins and three draws saw Santos’ men unbeaten over their 10 games. Their solid defence shipped a mere five goals and, with five clean sheets also throw in (two at home and three on the road) they never conceded more than a single goal in any game. They lacked any real cutting edge, however, scoring just 14 goals, and netted more than once away from home on just a single occasion – their must-win final match away to Georgia bringing a 2-1 victory.

Most Appearances: Karagounis & Salpigidis (10), Katsouranis (9), Samaras & Papastathopoulos (8)

Top Scorers: K Papadopoulos, Torisidis, Fetfatzidis (all 2 goals)

Top Assists: Katsouranis (3)

The Likely Lads

Kyriakos Papadopoulos wasn’t selected for the first half of Greece’s qualifying matches but, handed a chance in four of their last five, was a hugely significant figure. The 19 year old netted twice, with goals against Latvia and Malta crucial to his country’s progression and his adaptability means he is capable of playing in central defence or as a holding midfielder within Santos’ preferred 4-3-3 system. His price of 4.5 looks enticing, particularly when compared with the likes of right-back Vasilis Torisidis, who is a full 1.0 more expensive. Papadopoulos was a pivotal figure in Schalke’s recent third place finish in the Bundesliga and could benefit from the recovered balls rule: he was amongst the top four defenders for tackles, interceptions, clearances and aerial duels won in Germany’s top-flight for the 2011/12. For those unconvinced he is 100% nailed-on, the upcoming friendlies against Slovenia and Armenia towards the end of May should give us a more definite answer.

One of only two players to feature in every qualifier, the experience of Giorgos Karagounis on the left of the midfield three will be vital. Although Santos is determined to instill a more youthful vibrancy to the side, the 35 year old still has a part to play and, with free-kicks and corners (shared with Kostas Katsouranis) in his locker, it’s no surprise to see Karagounis the most expensive option from the Greek squad – costing 6.0, though, he’s still relatively light on the budget.

Fanis Gekas looks likely to be the lone forward and arrives in strong form. He played the first half of last season for Eintracht Frankfurt, scoring seven goals in 14 appearances, before a winter move to Samsunspor. His time at the Turkish club has proved fruitful, with Gekas producing eight goals and a couple of assists in just 11 appearances. Priced at just 5.5, and with spot-kick duties in the bag, Gekas looks a decent differential, with 0.9% of Fantasy managers currently snapping up his services.

Cheeky Punt

Nicknamed the Greek Messi, Sotiris Ninis has plenty to live up to. The 22 year old has seen much of his season curtailed by injury and flew under the radar as a result, with not a single appearance over the qualifying program. Snapped up by Parma in March for next term’s Serie A campaign, the highly rated winger was expected to play on the right of the midfield three, though in today’s announcement of the provisional squad, Santos revealed he sees Ninis as more of an attacking option, putting Fantasy managers on alert. Priced as a 5.5 midfielder, he could well be an out-of-position proposition, with just 1.7% ownership thus far.

Given their strong defensive showings in qualifying, a cut-price Greek keeper could be an inspired move and today’s squad announcement had a couple of surprises, with Dionisis Chiotis missing out. While both Michalis Sifakis and Alexandros Tzorvas (priced at 4.0, he is currently the most popular pick with 7.2% ownership) have made the cut, Santos sprung a surprise by hinting Kostas Chalkias could be his number one – the PAOK man has yet to be included in the McDonalds game. With questions still unanswered over the first choice keeper, those upcoming friendlies will be keenly analysed by Fantasy managers – it may well be an unnecessary risk if the situation isn’t any clearer ahead of the Poland game.

Santos gave Fantasy managers an early warning of his intentions to rotate earlier today, however, going on to say he will select players who:

can better adapt to the opponent. In a tournament with matches every four days, you will probably require changes in every match.

These Euros are turning out to be more of a headache than picking a FPL team.

It doesn't help that I automatically keep thinking the team on the left is playing at home when looking at the fixtures.

Yea I'm at the point of giving it a miss and just cheering on the Irish, not overly impressed with the subs and capt rule, it looks like an intense hands on competition if one wants to do well, whereas fpl meanders through season , 1 ft , odd hit , a wildcard and generally frustration whilst waiting for bonus points on Mondays or whenever fpl towers get round to them.

Have three players on the 11th, including a decent captain shout. And you havent really got a problem. Apart from thinking with that hangover I presume you will have on the 11th

      Defence is fine.
Good, Good if not injured, Nice Differential to Ibra, I'm punting on him so I recommend you not doing the same , Good
Benzema and Robben are great picks imo but I'd rather have a better German player than Muller in my team such as Ozil, Gomez, Podolski or Klose

Cheers Mull, is that Yarmolenko you mean? If so I think he's a great pick, on set pieces and he has a relatively easy group and he's possible oop.
Muller is sort of my gamble, most will be going for Ozil but I think Muller has just as much chance os getting goals and assists. Podolski could be good, but I think Klose and Gomez are too dear considering they may rotate with each other.

Muller could pay off but I'd still want a better German because I can see them winning it.

Just done a bit of research and it does seem that way. Although with Schweinsteiger back from injury and Kroos playing as well as he is, I can only see 2 attacking midfielder/wing roles and Ozil, Muller, Podolski and Gotze vying for them.

Although he may decide not to start Kroos (would be a mistake imo) and have another attacking midfielder (Muller).

One thing a lot of people seem to be overlooking in their teams... a lot are missing a solid captain choice from group c.

The way I see it is you need at least one
Good attacking mid/forward from Poland or Russia
    Good attacking mid/forward from Holland/Germany/Ronaldo
Good attacking mid/forward from Spain or Croatia
    Good attacking mid/forward from France/Ibrahimovich

Was supposed to post this last night but I was sobbing bitterly at the fact that FFS have starting doing what I've been doing. Had this written already so I'll post in anyway. Here's all my thoughts on Czech Republic.

Cue the 'you're such a wanabe Sir Paulos' comments... Sigh.

    THE DEFENCE

Czech Republic qualified for the tournament via the playoffs after coming second behind Spain in Group I after a number of very unconvincing performances from the Czechs. Including the playoffs and all the friendlies throughout the campaign, Czech Republic played 18 matches, scoring 26 goals and conceding 17. They managed 9 clean sheets during this period which suggests that a Czech Goalkeeper or Defender might not be a bad play at all.

Petr Čech is the highest selected keeper in the game and it’s hard to argue against his selection considering a price tag of just 5.0 million and the guarantee of minutes. As I’ve stated many times in my previous articles, Group A probably won’t see many goals mainly due to the attacking deficiencies of each team and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Czech Republic pick up one or two clean sheets. It’s also worth bearing in mind that Czech Republic’s first and second games are against Russia and Greece respectively so their toughest game of the Group (against the hosts) won’t be until after most of us have played our wildcard.

Czech Republic’s top scorer over the last 18 internationals is a defender - Michal Kadlec. The Leverkusen left-back scored six goals during those games and played every minute of every competitive game over the course of the qualifying campaign. He seems to have penalty duties in the bag which is one of the main reasons why his 5.5 million price tag is so attractive.

If you’re looking for a cheaper option in the Czech defence, then you’ll be disappointed to hear that 4.0 million Rajnoch didn’t make the squad and same-price Rajtoral has only ever played 23 minutes (which was in a friendly) in total for the senior team. However, at 4.5 million, we have Theodor Gebre-Selassie. He played the full 90 minutes in each of his country’s final 2 group games as well as 90 minutes in both legs of the playoff. It remains to be seen whether he’ll be nailed-on come competition time but he’s certainly one worth monitoring.

    THE ATTACK

The fact that a defender was their top scorer during the qualifying campaign is evidence enough that the attacking potential of Czech Republic’s midfielders and forwards is pretty poor but 7.0 million Tomáš Rosický is owned by a massive 24.3% of players. He scored just one goal in 1085 minutes of international football over the past 18 games so goals don’t look likely. However, despite being a brilliant distributor of the ball, assists may also be hard to come by due to Czech Republic’s poor goalscoring record and also because of the rules of the game. Assists will only be awarded if the scorer doesn’t go past a player and no points will be given for assisting an own goal or penalty. At 7.0 million, I’d personally want someone with a better goalscoring record because unfortunately this particular game doesn’t suit the Arsenal man.

Up front, the options don’t look great either. The top scorer from the forwards is Jan Rezek who isn’t even a nailed on starter and may even be playing in midfield. His club form isn’t mind-blowingly amazing, either. This season he’s played 26 times for Cyprus club Anorthosis Famagusta, scoring 7 times.

Milan Baroš may be a nice differential too but his, and indeed the entire team’s, goalscoring form isn’t worth a 7.0 million investment. If he could recreate the form he showed 8 years ago, he’ll certainly earn interest though.

I think i'll be avoiding Czech attacking players as I see that group being low scoring, Kadlec is probably the only player i'll have.

The assist rule really isn't that harsh. About 90% of the assists given in FPL would be given in the Euros as well.
      Very good btw.

You are incorrect, all goals from saves and off the posts wont be assists, also major deflections wont count. Also own goals dont always get an assist.

      Llorente/ Villa

Whoever is nailed on as the main striker from RVP and Hunt, if neither is nailed on than Kuyt(also if nailed on), if any of these players is not nailed on than Sneijder

Whoever is nailed on as the main striker Gomez or Klose, if neither is nailed on than Ozil.

Robben is unbelievably selfish, always injured and a problem in the dressing room. Even at his best hes not even close to what RVP and Sneijder can do.

                Not even close?

There goal scoring records are all pretty similar for Holland.
He isnt always injured, his apperances this season are pretty high. You can't say someone isnt the best player just because they are injured.
