Scout Report – Steven Naismith

Everton announced their first foray into the summer transfer market yesterday with the capture of Steven Naismith from Rangers on a four-year contract. The 25-year-old arrives at Goodison Park on a free deal due to the financial collapse of the Glasgow club and is the second player acquired from Ibrox in the last six months, following the January transfer of Nikica Jelavic:

While Naismith’s natural position is in “the hole” as a second striker, his new manager revealed he views him as a versatile player who will afford the Toffees a variety of options within the preferred 4-5-1 system. With the likes of Royston Drenthe and Steven Pienaar returning to their parent clubs after both players’ loan deals ended, the need for more attacking arrivals at the Merseyside club is obvious, with Moyes going on to say:

We are delighted that Steven has agreed to join us. He will be an excellent addition to the players we already have and we look forward to him being fit and ready to play at the start of the season. He is an established international who can play in a number of positions. He has a flexibility we always like in our players and which will hopefully prove to be very useful for us.

The Statistics

As a 15-year-old, Naismith signed his first professional contract with Kilmarnock in 2002, though had to wait a couple of years before making his first-team debut. His time at the Ayrshire club was hugely successful from a personal point of view, with Naismith picking up the Scottish Football Writers’ Player of the Year Award and Scottish PFA Young Player of the Year Award in 2005 and 2006 respectively. Over the course of his spell at Rugby Park, Naismith made 102 appearances and netted 29 times before he was snapped up by Rangers for £1.9m just seconds before the closure of the 2007/08 transfer window.

Naismith’s time at the Ibrox outfit was somewhat plagued by injury, though. He suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury towards the end of his first campaign, forcing him to miss the vast majority of the following season. In total, he spent five years at Ibrox, playing 98 league games and returning a more than respectable 28 goals and 23 assists – a superb start to last term saw him grab nine goals and a couple of assists in 11 games before, once again, a cruciate ligament injury put paid to his campaign.

The Prospects

Everton’s fortunes for the season ahead could well depend on further acquisitions. Last term, the January arrival of Jelavic and Pienaar turned them into a far more threatening side going forward – Moyes’ team had scored 23 goals in the first 23 Gameweeks but this jumped to 27 goals in the final 15 games. Moyes confirmed earlier today he hopes to sign Pienaar on a permanent deal this summer; if this transpires, the Toffees attacking assets will look far more enticing and perhaps help them avoid the customary slow start which seems to plague the Merseysiders’ prospects on an annual basis.

Certainly, Naismith’s partnership with Jelavic at Rangers will work in his favour and is sure to boost his chances of tucking in just behind the Croatian in the 4-5-1. If Moyes is considering him for a role elsewhere, however, his appeal will be considerably lessened – given that he’s likely to be classified as a forward in the Fantasy games, this would see him as a reverse out of position prospect.

Jelavic’s price will likely be a factor as to how we view the new boy. The former cost just 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) upon his arrival last term but an average of 5.3 points per game suggests his cost is set for a hike – if he can stays within the confines of 8.0, there is no doubt he’ll be the one Everton player many will earmark for their squads. If Naismith comes in around the 5.5 mark he’s likely to be an overlooked differential and could prove decent value for those Fantasy managers scouring the market for a cut-price forward.

No, it was 2v2 and the host kept switching who was on his based on whoever scored last.

I scored, he then insulted the other guy on his team (who was helpfully nicknamed penis) and put me on his team. Then this penis chap went and scored following a mistake by me so the host swapped us back. The other 3 players kept getting switched back and forth, the host's opinion on who was good and bad was changing with nearly every goal. Then when he was losing by a few goals he took everyone out but himself and let others back in once he scored against nobody. Eventually he kicked us all out 😆

Blimey! A colourful set of matches then. What was his name?

I was playing 3v3 winner stay on and my team had won 8 consecutive matches until one of our own teammates decides to start insulting me and this other guy and saying how bad we were, we were 8 minutes into overtime and were typing comments back, but he'd destroyed our morale and put us way off and we lost! Cannot believe he did that, his name was Kobalyn, don't ever play with him.

Well I find them offensive occasionally, therefore they are offensive. Taste is also subjective and open to interpretation, by which I also find your comments distasteful. A simple link to the BBC "Gossip" section would suffice as oppose to a string of posts. I am also not the first person to have brought this issue up. Myself and a few others have expressed our views with regards to your activity on the site. We (the community) find it offensive and unnecessary when you post things for attention, often with no contribution to the forum or the post/topic at hand. I'm sure you're a decent person with a lot of knowledge and enthusiasm for football, but there is a more pragmatic and acceptable way to engage in such activity on this site, as mentioned. You would find it more beneficial to both yourself and the community.

Exactly young Jedmonds, it is because you "don't understand" by which these arguments start. See the other side of the coin for a change, as oppose to being ignorant. I'm here on this forum a while now and enjoy nothing more than discussing football and other topics with the helpful and amiable people on this forum. Then a new guy comes along and upsets the apple-cart by occasionally posting things that both irritate and hinder the enjoyment shared by everyone. When all rest of the regulars return for the new season, it wont be long before the reports and complaints start flowing. And what will you have achieved? If you have a sense of morality, do search it and just think how the way in which you post helps everyone.

    1. If you were part of the Arsenal heirachy, what is the minimum price you'd put on RVP's head?

    2. Should Arsenal have put more effort earlier to try & resign RVP. Given his age & history or injury?

1: A difficult one. I'd say, on his day and given the wild prices out there at the moment, 35-40 million would be where I'd aim. Issue is his injury problems, that'd cause it to drop considerably so really the 25-30 region would be fair.

2: The lad wants trophies, can't blame him at this point. The only way Arsenal could have kept him was by signing a number of players capable of forming a Prem/CL winning side. Unfortunately, they haven't.

Agreed on both. Maybe the likes of PSG will enter into a bidding war. £20m is the bare minimum I'd hope to get for him.

I'm a fairly realistic fan. The time when Arsenal could challenge regularly for trophies was a very long time ago.

It's a sad state really. I have a lot of respect for Arsenal as a club and how they approach their youth system but in an age of big spending it just isn't enough. Will be very sad to see RVP leave Arsenal for 2 reasons. 1: He may leave the EPL which would be terrible and 2: For me, he's the first player that comes to mind whenever I hear someone say "Arsenal", I think he belongs there.

As for the bidding war, I'm thinking City, Chelsea, PSG and Real could wind up the front runners, good news for Arsenal as all can spend massive money to get him.

It's a terrible star of affairs when what seems like year after year we just can't keep our players. Walcott is also entering the last year of his contract.

I don't blame RVP for wanting to leave. Mildly hacked off at him though. All those years of standing by him through injury after injury, he's one god season & he's off.

The writing was pretty much on the wall when Podolski & Giroud were signed.

I think the board need to take a long hard look at themselves as this constant cycle of rebuilding must stop.

I agree Church, completely. It's an awful state right now and the board do need to look at it long and hard. They've let so much talent go all because they can't compete properly at the highest level.

People forget this because of last year, that RVP is really injury prone. I think in his 7 years at Arsenal he has just played 111 competitive games.

In his Arsenal career, he has played 194 league games in 8 years. That's around 24 out of 38 games a season.

I just can't see him valued more than 15-25m pounds.

Surely the problem is with Kroenke, not "the board" - Kroenke wants the club to be "self-financing" and won't allow Usmanov and the other feller ( can't remember his name ) to put money in, even though they want to.
Also, the supposed "caretakers" of the club were quite happy to cash their stake in and take the money. Lady Nina Somebody-or-other made 116m quid by selling her shares to Kroenke.

As long as one party holds 70% of the shares in the club, they can dictate pretty much whatever they want.

Kronke is merely an investor, nothing more.

The wage structure is another aspect of the clubs expenditure that needs addressing. It's (by & large) a flat wage. Which means shipping out players that aren't good enough (Denilson, Bendtner, Chamakh, Vela & Squillaci) is proving difficult.

Ah, I see now. Kroenke owns 66.83% and Usmanov and Moshiri own 29.72%. Hmmm, not exactly a recipe for change, is it.

Interestingly, Arsenal are playing a friendly against City on July 27th. in Beijing. Might Van Persie be playing for City by then?

Wouldn't surprise me if this transfer saga went right to the wire. Remember Na$ri started the playing season with Arsenal before his (£22 - £24m) transfer.

If club x want him enough they'll pay the price.

    Alreet lads

Good news for toon fans. (Just come on so not had a chance to check if it has been posted already). Senegal and Ivory Coast will play each other in the play off for the african nations cup. That means we get to keep either Tiote or both Ba and Dave for the whole season. This doesn't affect us fantasy wise, but it could have a big bearing on our season.

NB If Ivory Coast win, then 25-1 for cisse top scorer looks like a great bet. I guess that the african nations cup is factored into those odds.

Nah, it's not racist's. In fact they must lose out on a lot on visitors by doing this. It's probably much easier doing this as many countries have different betting laws, so it makes giving prizes easier. That's my thinking, anyways.

And technically it's this, it's not all of Great Britain I believe. "The Game is only open to persons residing in United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Channel Islands or Isle of Man. Any Manager found to be in breach of this provision may be disqualified."

Even that stat is skewed by his relatively injury free last season.

All one can hope for is a bidding war to erupt. Maybe we're viewing this all wrong, maybe deep down Wenger knows it's time for him to go. He is in his prime, won't get any better & his value will only decrease.

      Arsene (the economist) knows.

Last year was the first where he managed to play 38/38 games this season.

A lot of people have been echoing that same thought, that's it actually Wenger who wanted this to happen. And now, rather than doing it himself, RVP has taken the decision out of his hands.

Frankly, you can't let RVP go this season as I can't see any alternative in place, at the moment.

Please don't mistake me here. I don't want RVP to go. But, he is so all him for the highest possible price.

Wenger has bought replacements in Podolski & Giroud. How they perform remains to be seen of course. The sale of RVP alone could pay for those transfers. Wenger may make an additional forward purchase. We'll just have to wait & see how it all pans out.

Viera, Petit, Henry & Overmars were all shipped out before they hit 30. Wenger is 'Moneyball' through & through.
