FPL Player List Analysis – The Forwards

Our trio of articles analysing the recently released FPL Player Price list finally turns its attentions to the forwards. Having already assessed Goalkeepers and Defenders and Midfielders, the men up front now come under the microscope – with only four strikers in the double figure price bracket, many Fantasy managers are juggling budgets as we look for ways to accommodate one or two big hitters in our front three ahead of the big kick-off on Saturday August 18:

With only three places available, many will be looking for a cut-price option to balance the budget and Pavel Pogrebnyak immediately comes to mind. The Reading new boy notched six goals in 12 games at Fulham last term and, at 5.0, looks the only nailed-on option in this price range – with a double Gameweek to start the season, he’s all the more enticing. A notch up the valuations, Franco Di Santo (5.5) should lead the line for Wigan and if the Latics can come close to replicating their end to the 2011/12 campaign, he may well represent strong value. West Ham pair Carlton Cole and Ricardo Vaz Te, along with Sunderland’s Fraizer Campbell may also appeal in the budget bracket if regular starts are assured, though the Hammers duo look set to face stiff competition from new signing Modibo Maiga – he’s yet to be priced but a similar valuation may well be tempting, given his opening schedule.

At the 6.0 mark, Rickie Lambert perhaps holds the greatest appeal. The Southampton forward produced 27 goals and 14 assists last season and with spot-kicks and a share of direct free-kicks in his locker, is likely to pick up keen interest. Swansea’s Danny Graham returned 138 points for the Welsh outfit in his debut Premier League campaign, while Fulham’s new front duo of Mladen Petric and Hugo Rodallega also seem reasonably priced. Djibril Cisse comes in at 6.5 and if the explosive Frenchman maintains the form that harvested six goals in seven starts last term, has the potential to make a mockery of his valuation – team-mate Bobby Zamora costs the same, as does Grant Holt, who racked up 138 points in 2011/12.

Moving into the mid-bracket now and Peter Odemwingie’s cost of 7.0 could turn out to be strong value if new Baggie boss Steve Clarke can coax his 2010/11 form from the Nigerian, after a disappointing set of displays under Roy Hodgson. Demba Ba’s woeful second half of the previous campaign means he will set you back just 7.5 and, if Alan Pardew retains his 4-3-3, the Newcastle man will pick up little investment out wide on the left. Elsewhere in this price range there is so much uncertainty over game time that few hold much appeal.

Jumping up to 8.5, then, Nikica Jelavic and Darren Bent immediately leap out. The Everton man produced some phenomenal Fantasy form after arriving from Glasgow Rangers last January and such a price tag seems kind, considering he produced 69 points from a total of 13 appearances. Bent will be hoping for a revival in fortunes under new boss Lambert and, having recovered from an ankle injury, could prosper this time round. Arsenal new boy Lukas Podolski is an intriguing prospect – game time looks guaranteed and, if Robin Van Persie decides to leave, could well be handed spot-kicks and a share of set-pieces.

Just outside the big-hitter bracket, there are plenty of enticing options. Emmanuel Adebayor racked up 194 points last term, suggesting his cost of 9.5 is still respectable – if he can seal his permanent move to Spurs, many will be looking his way as an alternative to the options in the Spurs midfield. Papiss Cisse averaged over 7ppg upon his arrival on Tyneside – similarly priced to Adebayor, he is sure to see plenty interest from Fantasy managers. Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli are both available for 9.0; the former, in particular, could well be a bargain at that price if he can maintain his starting role under Roberto Mancini, while over at the Emirates, 9.0 Olivier Giroud’s potential is dependent on the future of Van Persie; if the Gunners skipper departs, the Frenchman looks likely to lead the line.

Luis Suarez, at 9.5, has yet to bring the goalscoring form he displays for Uruguay to the Premier League but Brendan Rodgers’ passing game and a move to 4-3-3 may finally bring out the best in the former Ajax man. Fernando Torres is one of just five players in the entire game with a double figure valuation, though the Chelsea man is the only one of the quintet who arrives on the back of a poor previous campaign. El Nino will set you back 10.0 but with a double Gameweek to begin with, his appeal increases substantially; with Didier Drogba out the picture and the likes of Hazard and Marin adding to Mata’s creativity, many will be ready to take a punt.

There’s no surprise to see last season’s top three scorers as the highest priced assets on offer.Sergio Aguero (11.5) delivered 211 points in his debut campaign despite some poor away returns – the Argentine’s points picked up on the road after Tevez was introduced to the first XI towards the end of the season and has the potential to improve upon the previous term. Wayne Rooney, at 12.0, could also be set for an upturn in points – the purchase of Kagawa hints at a move to 4-2-3-1, with Rooney in a more advanced role this time round.

Robin Van Persie’s valuation of 13.0 hands us a dilemma. It seemed as if the Arsenal skipper was an armband contender almost every Gameweek in 2011/12 and, with 269 points accrued, was head and shoulders ahead of any other FPL player. If he chooses to stay at the Emirates, or moves within the Premier League, his value – while still reasonable, given his level of returns – hands us plenty of problems up front as we look to juggle budgets. From a Fantasy perspective, it may well be that that mooted move to Juventus could solve a multitude of selection headaches in the upcoming campaign.

Angel Rangel anyone? Now that he's had a year to settle he could be gold. Was all for ignoring the swans, but those fixtures are delicious.. Could be 2-3 CS's in the first 8

Ok, RMT this bad boy before I go blind from staring at my team, I can see them all on the back of my eyelids when I close them, that can't be good........

    Federici (DdG)

    Ivanovic Lescott Vidic (Cuellar, Fabio)

Maloney Hazard Ben Arfa Noble N'Zogbia

    Torres Tevez (Pog)

3 mill in bank for Torres -> Rooney Upgrade and possible mid tinkering after GW 2...

Is it a bit too heavy in defence?? Never been a big fan of expensive defenders but can't decide which of those 3 to drop....ohh the pain!!!!

Tevez and Torres too risky IMO, also not convinced by Pog. BArfa is a huge risk as a there is Ramadan and b) He blows so hot and cold for 7.5 million. N'Zog is a risk, but one I may take myself. I'd use 1 million or so of that 2 and get JT or Cashley over Ivan

Cheers men. Gambling on Torres in the DWG but unless he goes mental altogether with the goals I'll be throwing Rooney in instead of him after the DGW.

Good points about DdG too; I had him as No 1 until I spotted the DGW for Federici - but have they ANY chance of keeping clean sheets in either of those games??

HBA is a good call too especially @ the start, I'll be putting Pienaar in instead of him if he makes the Goodison switch.

I don't really rate Pog but he's cheap and I won't be using a third striker much....

Have u guys noticed the lack of love for Franco DiS?? Surely @ 5.5 he is a decent cheap third option up top and finished the season strongly....

My post seemed to have got lost last night so could someone give their thoughts and advice on the following:

    de Gea – Federici
    Hooveld – Lescott – Cole – Enrique – Fabio
    Hazard – Holman – Sigurdsson – Sinclair – McClean
    Torres – Pogrebnyak – Jelavic

I hope to swap Jelavic for Borini when he is added.

My only fear is the midfield appears quite weak whereas the defence is pretty strong.

I've got decisions to be made over whether i'd want

      A) Vidic + Bale

      or

      B) Kaboul + Valencia + £3.0m.

A leaving me with 2 United defenders and 1 attacker
B leaving me with 1 United defender and 2 attackers

I am cautious about doubling up on any defence, so I'd go with B but monitoring Vertonghen as an alternative to Kaboul.

As I said, I think Tony could reach essential status this season.

Depends what you want from a defender. If your looking for a regular starter in your team who scores goals and will get clean sheets, then vert is your man. If you want someone to rotate who will get some clean sheets then kaboul is your man.

Anyone looking at Ashley Young instead of TV7 or Kagawa? When he plays, he usually does good and gets some attacking points. The only worry is him not playing. But I would say he has a better chance of starting at the left wing then Nani as Nani is effective only when played on the right wing.

I didn't say he is more effective than Tony V. I just said he plays better on the right wing than the left wing. He may not see game time at all.

No he doesn't atually. He does more memorable shots when on the right but he was doing just as well if not better when played on the left last season

Yeah, the whole Nani's better on the right thing is a bit of a myth, came about from his form the season before last. As you alluded to most of his best performances last season actually came when he played on the left.

I expect Valencia/Nani to be our most consistent selection on the wings this season, and Nani at 9 mil could be a bargain should he nail down a spot.

This, Nani and Tony at 9 million are both on potential GW3 Hazard replacement list along with Bale. If Nani can get the consistency into his game he will be huge, but right now I'd prefer Tony V, less explosive (though capable of explosive returns) but more consistent

Well his shots are barely on target. They mostly hit the defenders. What he does good at right wing is that he provides good service to the strikers. His crosses from right wing are better and also he connects well with the strikers when playing on right.

Ok, so I thought I'd share the team I'm on at the moment and a bit of rationale behind it. Feel free to join in with a bit of feedback if you wish. (£1m in the bank) Like most of the teams going around on here, I'd be amazed if it is still my team come August 18th 🙂

    Federici, Friedel

    Ivanovic, Cole, Demel, Vidic, Fonte

    Arteta, Guthrie, Lampard, Noble, Maloney

    Aguero, Rooney, Graham

    - 5 DGW players and cover accross the top 5 (replacing Chelsea with Newcastle).

    1) I like the Friedel/Federici pick as it is the cheapest way into Spurs defence and also gives you a bit of DGW cover through Federici. I plan on playing Friedel most games, but Federici steps in nicely when Spurs have a tough fixture

    2) A lot of uncertainty around Chelsea's midfield options at the moment - I've gone for Lampard but call it Hazard if you like - will monitor this closer to kick off. Also persuades me to go for 2 x Chelsea defenders for the double

    3) Man Utd cover looks essential for GW 2 and 3 to me - Rooney and Vidic seem the best nailed on options at this moment in time

    4) Arteta is a good way to get affordable Arsenal cover - possible spot-kick duties too, with RVP looking for a move away. Racked up 5 goals in 30 PL games without penos last season so I think he's a good option. Call him a differential, if you will.

    5) Chelsea midfielder --> Bale in GW2 gives me good cover in GW3 without taking a hit and plays the fixtures nicely.

    6) Currently have Graham as cover up front but am monitoring the price Michu comes in at.

But that is a better combo don't you think? Vertonghen has a better goal threat than Vidic and DDG is likely to have more CS than Friedel. DDG is the most likely first choice keeper I think. He finished the season brilliantly.

Prefer Friedel / Vidic personally. More assured starts for Friedel compared to DDG and likely more saves too.

Nothing worse than thinking you've got a clean sheet banker at home to stoke and then suddenly you're relying on Federici away to Arsenal.

What you guys opinions on this team? I feel like I wont stray too far from this sort of structure in my final team:

    DDG / Federeci
    Kaboul / A.Cole / Lescott / McCartney / Teierney
    Hazard / Michu / Kagawa / Noble / Guthrie
    Torres / Tevez / Bent

2million in bank to upgrade Torres to Rooney. I have Michu assuming he comes in at 6million or less. Option to downgrade A.Cole or Lescott to Clichy to upgade Michu to the likes of Pienaar or Nzog

Kaboul may be out the first couple of weeks for religious reasons.

Kagawa is an unknown quantity in the EPL. Risky to put in your lineup, you can always pick him up if he catches form but would hold off on him until you see how he will be used.

Parm. Was just looking through the 3 team spreadsheet after our discussion last night over QPR and West Ham rotation. Fulham are the perfect team to fit the needs of my rotation. Barring GW38 Fulham are the perfect team to cover off QPR's tough home fixtures, for every Red, Yellow or Orange home game QPR have, Fulham have a much nicer looking home game, so that rotation works brilliantly.

not as such, was just scanning through all the coloured fixtures to asses how my rotation worked and that came up, so I looked at Fulham, and it wasn't much better. Would be something if I got to GW38 with the same backline I have now, though it's possible I may still have 4 of 5 barring injury.
