The Burning Question: Can Gylfi Sigurdsson Replicate his Form at Spurs?

Our next Burning Question article focuses on one of last season’s surprise packages, the Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson. The former Reading man was snapped up on loan from Hoffenheim by Swansea during the January transfer window and promptly made a mockery of his 5.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, scoring seven goals and assisting three more while playing in “the hole” behind Danny Graham. His formidable displays took Fantasy managers and Swansea’s opponents by surprise and by the end of the season the Icelandic international was hot property.

New Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, who had also managed Sigurdsson during his stint at Reading, was chief amongst the midfielder’s suitors and keen to re-unite with the playmaker once again this summer but it was Tottenham who ultimately secured him on a permanent deal in the region of £6.5m. With such attacking talents, even a FPL price hike to 9.0 and a 7.3 tag in the Sky Sports game may still represent a bargain. Already during pre-season friendlies he has scored two goals, but questions remain as to how manager Andre Villas-Boas will fit Sigurdsson and fellow attacking midfielder Rafael Van Der Vaart into the same side. During Spurs 1-1 draw with LA Galaxy and in last night’s 2-0 loss to Valencia, Sigurdsson played worryingly deep while Van Der Vaart was on the pitch, but has been utilised in an attacking role whenever the Dutch midfielder isn’t on the pitch.

Mark says…
The early signs are good. So far in pre-season it appears that Andre Villas-Boas has looked to harness Sigurdsson’s talents – I can’t help but notice that he’s immediately jumped the pecking order on set-plays. There is concern about the role that Sigurdsson will play once Luka Modric has flown the nest – something which looks inevitable. He could find himself as part of a midfield three with Rafael Van der Vaart and Gareth Bale flanking a lone striker, or worse still, deeper in a 4-2-3-1. It remains to be seen if that system will allow Sigurdsson to exert his considerable influence around the opposition’s penalty area. We’d like to think so but, with both Van der Vaart and Bale similarly priced, I wonder if Sigurdsson is the riskier option of the three right now. Certainly I’m leaning towards Bale – he seems more certain to kick-on from last season, whereas Sigurdsson set high standards at Swansea and was a key figure in a side that seemed to be bereft of direct goal threats.

Paul says…
It all depends on his game time. If Sigurdsson becomes an integral member of the Spurs first-team under Andre-Villas Boas, I see no reason as to why he can’t replicate last season’s form. When the summer transfer window closes, we’re likely to get a better idea of Villas-Boas’ intentions – he has maintained a 4-2-3-1 in pre-season with Sigurdsson mainly utilised in “the hole” but the manager has admitted that is mainly down to current personnel. A preferred 4-3-3 formation, with Sigurdsson tucked in behind a lone frontman, would replicate the Icelandic international’s role under Brendan Rodgers at Swansea and Reading and surely boost his appeal. Quite how Villas-Boas will use Rafael Van der Vaart should be key; if the Dutchman is vying for the same role as Sigurdsson, both players’ minutes could be reduced and promote Gareth Bale as the main midfield option in the Tottenham midfield for Fantasy managers. Spurs scored 66 goals last season – 22 more than Swansea – and if Sigurdsson becomes nailed-on, his creativity will be key next term. With the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker ideal for Villas-Boas’ high defensive line, the potential is there for the Portuguese manager to quickly draw a line under his brief spell at Chelsea last time round.

Anorak says…
Whether through the change in manager at Spurs, or the enforced absence of Rafael van der Vaart due to injury, there is certainly a new verve to the attacking midfield slot of Andre Vilas-Boas’ Tottenham side during the pre-season friendlies. Sigurdsson appears to have slotted seamlessly into a Spurs pre-season midfield without the aforementioned Dutchman and Modric, and has made himself at home picking up both an assist and a goal in the final game of that US tour (a 2-1 win over New York Red Bulls). That said, the future of both Modric and Van der Vaart is sure to have a key part to play in the potential success of Sigurdsson at Spurs – should they both start the season at White Hart Lane, then midfield spaces will be at a premium, even in the 4-2-3-1 formation likely to be adopted – one of Sigurdsson and Van der Vaart would need to be pushed wide right and, in order to maintain balance (and some semblance of width) could easily find themselves benched.

Andy says…
As the unofficial president of the Gylfi Sigurdsson fan club, this is perhaps the one question that has caused me sleepless nights in pre-season. My short answer is an unequivocal, yes. The Icelander has all the talent to succeed at this level but now that he is surrounded by the likes of Gareth Bale and Rafael Van Der Vaart – and with Emmanuel Adebayor still in the shopping list – I am a little worried he could end up sharing the spoils a little too much. I think he has more than enough ability but I’m definitely fearful of how his new team-mates will impact upon his scoring. There’s just as much a part of me that thinks having a stronger squad around him will only better his cause.

He is only 8.0 for Liverpool's main striker. That's pretty good value in my eyes, plus he has an attack minded manager who seems to have big hopes for him. I'll stick but thanks for the thoughts. Is that all that ye don't like?

How did Lampard, Mata and Hazard do today?

Also, if you're feeling kind, who are better midfielders to go for rather than Larsson (6.5) and Brunt (6.0)? They are on all set pieces so surely they are the best bets for the price?

Lampard was solid, Held the midfield well enough before the sending off and also got forward well(and more than expected). Mata didn't have a massive impact and went missing for long periods. Hazard was energetic and tried lots of things but ultimately tried too hard, looked a bit like ronaldo in his first season, will prob take a while to settle into the swing of things.

Lampard played deep and stayed deep for a large part of the game, probably because Chelsea were down to 10 men. Hazzard will come good at some point, just seemed to be trying to hard today; young lad, big ego. Mata looked ok. Thought Ramires was pick of the bunch though

Community shield goals have thrown me into emotional turmoil, really can’t decide between these teams (to be made after the DGW of GW1 has passed):

    Team 1.
    Friedel, Green
Coloccini, Kelly (Ful), Williams (Swans), Mariappa, Cuellar
    Hazard/Bale/Mata, Kagawa, Sinclair, McClean, Cabaye
    Pogbren, Aguero, Rooney

    Team 2 + 0.5m
    For defence see team 1
Hazard/Mara/Bale, Noble, Ben Arfa, Sinclair, McClean
    Rooney, Torres, Tevez

Cheers for the responses in advance! Please tell me why you made your choice and also where I should spend that extra money in Team 2!

If your emotional now, I fear for your well being come friday!

Friedel is a good pick, should do well based on fixtures.

      Your defence is poor IMO,

There's not much between the two teams, Kagawa is better than Noble and Torres than Pog - the differences.

So decide if it's Tevez or Aguero you and go with that team.

Cheers for the response. Although the differences are small I do think they might have a large impact e.g Torres could outscore Pog by miles whereas Kagawa beats Noble by only a few assists. Also I was wondering if keeping Ben Arfa over Cabaye is worth it considering I will have to settle for a much less nailed on Tevez?

I'm not keen at all on the Newc mids for the first few GWs anyways.

Go with Tevez and use the 2.5 million to improve your defence/midfield. Kelly won't play much (if at all) for Fulham now they have Riether at right back. Coloccini has a tough start and 2 Swansea and 2 Sunderland is risky in terms of clean sheets.

Also, Pog is a big risk because there are unlikely to be any other decent 5m strikers to replace him with. So you'll have to downgrade elsewhere to earn funds which is a waste of a transfer.

I feel that he should be priced similarly to Yaya or Sess @ 8.0. Just my thoughts.

Thought he looked his last season's sloppy self, running into defenders and losing the ball far too much. His goal broke kindly for him but it wasn't exactly a world class finish. He might come good later on but not now.

Have no idea whether to get Hazard or not though. The sending off made his contribution way more difficult to judge.

      Respectfully disagree Snatch!

That left foot strike was great. Last season, it would have sailed over the bar, or into the keepers chest.

Imo....the lone striker on the European Cup winner with a DGW vs wig/RDG/NEW. He is a must!!!! Especially when you consider Roo vs eve.

The ball went right into his path, if he had missed it he'd be a laughing stock again on this site. His general play was sloppy and he'll never get that lost yard of pace back. IMO he needs to adapt his style of play a little to adjust to the loss of pace and acceleration, and if he can get his confidence up his finishing will come naturally.

But he did not miss that is my point. IMO...as a fantasy prospect (forget about being the all round footballer) his lack scoring touch was if downfall last year. I think he is an absolute must. 10 pts x 2 (C) is a reasonable expectation for GW1.

Tbh i'd sooner captain Ashley Cole.

I think 2 Chelsea defenders and a midfielder or vice versa is more appealing than using a forward slot on Torres.

And also, Torres certainly isn't a player i'd even be looking at if it wasn't for the double. So i'd have to use a transfer getting him out after week 1 or 2.

He played all but 2 or 3 league games last season (I think he was injured for one of the ones he missed) And he's a beast at home, easy captain option. Tevez is class too, but you'll always have that worry over whether he'll start or not.

Tbh i've no idea which one i'm going to get.

On the downside Aguero is subbed off early most games. Towards the end of last season all the city strikers were fit and I think Tevez had similar game time to Aguero, so there's really not much in it. Aguero does play a bit further up the pitch, but I'm not convinced that its worth shelling out an extra 2.5m for...

That's because they were managed by AVB who likes to have a high defensive line for the first half of the season, and during the second half under RDM, they were mainly focused on the Champions League. I'm not saying that they will keep many clean sheets this season, but it's quite likely that they will keep 2 against Wigan and Reading.

Great article, it really is a stumper.

I do find however that so many articles on FFS make reference to the fact that a player is "cheaper" and a "bargain" in the Sky Sports game, but you only get a budget of £75m in the Sky Sports game so it's all relative. In this case, 9.0 is almost directly proportionate to 7.3 when you compare the FPL budget to the Sky Sports budget.

      krul/ruddy

      cashley/hangeland/simpson/clyne/gunter

      hazard/yaya/kagawa/allen/sterling

      aguero/torres/graham

      thinking about hazard -> bale
      torres -> rooney week2

      what do you reckon?

Not convinced Newcastle will be as solid at the back as they were last season, and they have a couple tough fixtures to start off with, so I can't see having goalkeeper and defender from them paying off in the short term. Hazard to Bale is probably sensible. Can't see Sterling getting much game time, your probably better off with a dirt cheap 5th midfielder that is at least nailed on so you can rely on them to play when you have no other options.

I really really really can't begin to understand this fad over Torres... Apart from his goal I thought he was rather unflattering! I'm opting for lampard or Ramires so I can spare myself the disappointment that el niño has so notoriously caused everyone in the past!

atleast two goals from torres gw1. Think matas also cert to play both, was debating between hazard and mata today and that performance by hazard made it easy enough
