The Burning Question: Can Gylfi Sigurdsson Replicate his Form at Spurs?

Our next Burning Question article focuses on one of last season’s surprise packages, the Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson. The former Reading man was snapped up on loan from Hoffenheim by Swansea during the January transfer window and promptly made a mockery of his 5.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, scoring seven goals and assisting three more while playing in “the hole” behind Danny Graham. His formidable displays took Fantasy managers and Swansea’s opponents by surprise and by the end of the season the Icelandic international was hot property.

New Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, who had also managed Sigurdsson during his stint at Reading, was chief amongst the midfielder’s suitors and keen to re-unite with the playmaker once again this summer but it was Tottenham who ultimately secured him on a permanent deal in the region of £6.5m. With such attacking talents, even a FPL price hike to 9.0 and a 7.3 tag in the Sky Sports game may still represent a bargain. Already during pre-season friendlies he has scored two goals, but questions remain as to how manager Andre Villas-Boas will fit Sigurdsson and fellow attacking midfielder Rafael Van Der Vaart into the same side. During Spurs 1-1 draw with LA Galaxy and in last night’s 2-0 loss to Valencia, Sigurdsson played worryingly deep while Van Der Vaart was on the pitch, but has been utilised in an attacking role whenever the Dutch midfielder isn’t on the pitch.

Mark says…
The early signs are good. So far in pre-season it appears that Andre Villas-Boas has looked to harness Sigurdsson’s talents – I can’t help but notice that he’s immediately jumped the pecking order on set-plays. There is concern about the role that Sigurdsson will play once Luka Modric has flown the nest – something which looks inevitable. He could find himself as part of a midfield three with Rafael Van der Vaart and Gareth Bale flanking a lone striker, or worse still, deeper in a 4-2-3-1. It remains to be seen if that system will allow Sigurdsson to exert his considerable influence around the opposition’s penalty area. We’d like to think so but, with both Van der Vaart and Bale similarly priced, I wonder if Sigurdsson is the riskier option of the three right now. Certainly I’m leaning towards Bale – he seems more certain to kick-on from last season, whereas Sigurdsson set high standards at Swansea and was a key figure in a side that seemed to be bereft of direct goal threats.

Paul says…
It all depends on his game time. If Sigurdsson becomes an integral member of the Spurs first-team under Andre-Villas Boas, I see no reason as to why he can’t replicate last season’s form. When the summer transfer window closes, we’re likely to get a better idea of Villas-Boas’ intentions – he has maintained a 4-2-3-1 in pre-season with Sigurdsson mainly utilised in “the hole” but the manager has admitted that is mainly down to current personnel. A preferred 4-3-3 formation, with Sigurdsson tucked in behind a lone frontman, would replicate the Icelandic international’s role under Brendan Rodgers at Swansea and Reading and surely boost his appeal. Quite how Villas-Boas will use Rafael Van der Vaart should be key; if the Dutchman is vying for the same role as Sigurdsson, both players’ minutes could be reduced and promote Gareth Bale as the main midfield option in the Tottenham midfield for Fantasy managers. Spurs scored 66 goals last season – 22 more than Swansea – and if Sigurdsson becomes nailed-on, his creativity will be key next term. With the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker ideal for Villas-Boas’ high defensive line, the potential is there for the Portuguese manager to quickly draw a line under his brief spell at Chelsea last time round.

Anorak says…
Whether through the change in manager at Spurs, or the enforced absence of Rafael van der Vaart due to injury, there is certainly a new verve to the attacking midfield slot of Andre Vilas-Boas’ Tottenham side during the pre-season friendlies. Sigurdsson appears to have slotted seamlessly into a Spurs pre-season midfield without the aforementioned Dutchman and Modric, and has made himself at home picking up both an assist and a goal in the final game of that US tour (a 2-1 win over New York Red Bulls). That said, the future of both Modric and Van der Vaart is sure to have a key part to play in the potential success of Sigurdsson at Spurs – should they both start the season at White Hart Lane, then midfield spaces will be at a premium, even in the 4-2-3-1 formation likely to be adopted – one of Sigurdsson and Van der Vaart would need to be pushed wide right and, in order to maintain balance (and some semblance of width) could easily find themselves benched.

Andy says…
As the unofficial president of the Gylfi Sigurdsson fan club, this is perhaps the one question that has caused me sleepless nights in pre-season. My short answer is an unequivocal, yes. The Icelander has all the talent to succeed at this level but now that he is surrounded by the likes of Gareth Bale and Rafael Van Der Vaart – and with Emmanuel Adebayor still in the shopping list – I am a little worried he could end up sharing the spoils a little too much. I think he has more than enough ability but I’m definitely fearful of how his new team-mates will impact upon his scoring. There’s just as much a part of me that thinks having a stronger squad around him will only better his cause.

I think he'll start. Not the kindest opening fixtures, but judging by the complete lack of Arsenal coverage in 99% of RMTs, I'd say he'd be a good early differential. My diff is currently RVP (never thought I'd say that) but Theo or Cazorla in midfield are tempting too.

So I was sitting outside when an apple fell on my head and made me come up with this team for GW1, what do you all think?: P.S Subs are in brackets

    Green (Friedel)

    Kelly, Cashley, Mariappa (Cuellar, Williams)

    Mata, Cabaye, Kacaniklic, Sinclair (McClean)

    Rooney, Torres - C, Tevez - VC

QUESTION 1: Cabaye + Sinclair OR Ben Arfa + Michu?

    QUESTION 2: Cashley/Lescott + Kacaniklic OR Colocinni + Taraabt/£6m midfielder

Swans are looking very attacking so Green could be an issue for GW1, Kelly might not start (Riether was brought in), following on from Swans new attacking style they've been leaking goals in pre-season so Williams might not be a great pick either. Sinclair may be on the move to Man City (although just rumours) and I'm not really a fan of the midfield in general, however I could be very, very wrong!

but, cheap break into a liverpool mid
and i can see him more as a center mid, with lucas roaming more defensively. and gerrard slightly deeper forward.
liverpool = more goals and clean sheets than swansea
he got 4 goals 4 assists last season for swansea
couple clean sheets. he'll be a decent bench Mid rotating with Maloney and Noble

True! But still....14 midfielders!!!! 15 if you count Podolski who will probably play a wider/deeper role. With the exception of Lansbury, you could make a case for any of the others playing a part in a pretty decent midfield.

        Ox, Song, Ramsey, Podolski

        Gervinho, Diaby, Cazorla, Walcott

        Arshavin, Arteta, Wilshere, Miyaichi

That's 3 completely different midfields that most prem teams would be happy with!

Drop Cabaye and Haz. Go for slight downgrades to 6.5's and 9.0s to up your defense a bit. I don't mind the cheap defense if you want to go for it, but be aware of the balance. Especially if you plan on playing 4-3-3 most weeks.

    Hey guys, please RMT:

    Vorm Cerny

    Cole, Lescott, Harte, Cuellar, Clyne
    Lampard, Valencia, Noble, Tarrabt, Gomez,
    Aguero, Torres, Bent

I have read Cuellar may not be nailed on so will be thinking about taking him out. Any suggestions? Bent and Tarrabt are slight gambles but I think Tarrabt has changed in the last year and will do well With respect to Bent, well Lambert is such an attack minded manager in my opinion so I think he will surely turn the previously rubbish Villa team around. Any thoughts on the overall team?

Get another 4m defender. Cerny's price is going to go down and it will hinder you in future transfers. Swansea have nice fixtures so Vorm is an OK keepers.
Cole, Lescott and Clyne are decent options. Harte and Cuellar are rotation risks.
Midfield is nice except for Gomez who is a rotation risk
      Forwards are great.

it's a fact that he's been playing RB pre-season 😛 i'm not saying he will be every game in prem, but for some games it's likely. plus i'm not sure he's a prolific enough scorer for the price, despite his number of assists. and nani's gonna play some games on the right, for sure!

ramires didn't score very well last season (lots of cheaper options outscored him) and he's yet to show any kind of consistent threat in the final third, plus i don't think anybody is nailed on in that midfield anymore, but i may be wrong!

Idk if you watched the United friendlies? Valencia was only playing at RB because we don't have anyone else there atm. We will have that "solved" soon. Even so Valencia looked the better and more potent attacker even when Nani was playing in front of him. Nani has been in poor form really (End of last season, euros, pre-season) and Fergie picks on form, so i see Valencia's form putting him nailed onto RM position with Nani and Young fighting it out for LM.

As for Ramires, it's mostly his DGW that entices me, plus RDM seems to like him a lot, he got a few assists/goals in UCL for RDM and got one today in the CS. For 7 it also gives me an option to get any 6.5er that is doing well in, even if their price rises slightly.

But fair points regardless. Thanks for your input 🙂

Get Rooney straight off the bat as you'll inevitably have some other problem that needs rectifying.
I don't like Friedel or Tottenham defence because they've got a manager who likes a defensive high line and when he used it at Chelsea it wasn't very solid.

Yeah, it's a gamble to go in with a planned transfer in GW2. Maybe Rooney from the off is the sensible route. Aguero (SOT) could go bananas though, where as I really can't see Everton shipping loads of goals at home.

I'm not convinced about Friedel either - he seems good value, but it all depends on how Spurs perform under the AVB regime. Which GK pairing have you gone for?

Green rotates very well with Friedel though... And yeah, if Ivan is suspended I'll most likely go with Cole, but I'm not keen on Allen at all. He'll face some competition for starts and I expect him to sit in a relatively defensive role with Lucas in CM, and LIV have very tough opening fixtures. Noble and Maloney on the other hand, rotate well, take set pieces and have good fixtures.

He started the last friendly with Mariappa on the bench, so I think Gunter is looking good for the RB role. Mariappa more likely to challenge Gorkss/Pearce at CB imo.

I'd go with the second option then.
It's vitally important to have some flexibility in the first few matches, and so the more money you can keep in the bank whilst starting a decent team, the less compulsion you will feel to play an early wildcard.

on paper chico, de guzman and michu > caulker, allen and sigurdsson, and the new man shares the ideals of the previous. but of course, the former aren't prem-proven so it's a risk.

Allen had one of the highest number of passes in the whole of europe, and his success rate was just as high. Don't think de Guzman is that good.

that can be deceiving though, swansea never really carved out many chances last season, they were the masters of the sideways pass and the own-half pass more often than not. britton had an even better rate, would you say he's a better player than allen? i think if the top passers in europe played the exact system that swansea played, they'd be getting close to 100% success rate.

i don't know if de guzman is that good but i'd say he's more... established, than joe allen was this time last season.

Replace Demel with Clyne maybe? Fabio and Clyne Rotate perfectly, and fairly well with Hangeland too.

Not sure on Yaya, i expect Mancini not to use 3-5-2 most of the time and to rather opt for 4-2-3-1 in the league which will see yaya dropping back to a more defensive roll. His goal today was somewhat lucky. Won't often find the ball on the edge of the box as he did today.

I think they will prob get the most cleanies, but i also think that a Man U and Man C defender each will get more combined due partly to the nice rotation.

If the 2nd City defender is short term though, then ok, go for it.

Alreet lads. Some comments on the last page criticizing those going for both aguero and tevez as "putting all of your eggs in one basket". Personally, I don't see that as a problem, as long as that basket is highly likely to be the highest scoring "basket" over the first few games. Southampton and QPR in the first few games is pretty tempting. I'm probably going to go for both, and use the first 3 games to decide which one to upgrade for Rooney.

I agree - I think it's fine to have both in the short term given their fixtures. Would you start with this team and do Aguero -> Rooney in GW2, or just start with Rooney from GW1:

      Friedel, Green
      Ivanovic, Zabaleta, Cuellar, Clyne, Gunter
      Mata, Bale, Lampard, Noble, Maloney
      Aguero, Tevez, Graham

I would start with aguero. Rooney won't do much away at everton. And it will give you a chance to see if he is match fit.

I see you haven't gone for Torres. Until chelsea sign another centre forward I just can't see past him.

I don't think it's a bad idea, just if you have Aguero/Rooney/Tevez then thats a lot invested in your forward line, or if you go without Rooney its a big risk. Though if you think they'll both deliver big points then it's a decent plan.

gallas is likely fourth choice centre back these days. i'm not big on cabaye, not the kind of player who racks up FPL points. fine otherwise!

        Ok gallas is gone then...
cabeye is ok for his price but il have anohter look. he has a really high percentage uptake too, which i guess means nothing, but still
