Injury Concerns for Pardew Ahead of Spurs Clash

While we’re always a little cynical when it comes to withdrawals prior to international friendlies, Alan Pardew clearly has plenty to ponder ahead of Newcastle’s Gameweek 1 opener against Spurs. Having watched his side lose 4-1 to Cardiff at the weekend, the Magpies boss is keen to rally his troops in time for Saturday evening’s home clash with Andre Villas-Boas’ side but this morning he revealed he has several first-team concerns on the horizon…

Up front, both Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse are struggling for fitness. The pair missed out against Cardiff, with Pardew handing Shola Ameobi the lone striker role in a 4-4-1-1, which saw Jonas Gutierrez play in “the hole” – a possible sign of things to come should the Senegal strikers fail to recover from their respective injuries.

Bearing in mind that Newcastle then travel to Greece to face Atromitos in the Europa League on Thursday August 25 before their Gameweek 2 visit to Chelsea only two days later, it’s fair to say that Pardew will likely be cautious with his team selection for fear of any long-term absence.

“Papiss has got a slight hamstring we think he will recover by Tuesday or Wednesday. Demba has a shin injury which he has carried for a week or so. So we took him out of the game on Tuesday.”

There are plenty of other concerns, aside from the two forwards. Pardew also conceded that Hatem Ben Arfa is all but out of the Spurs game due to a knee problem, while Yohan Cabaye’s lack of match fitness is a big worry. Ben Arfa’s absence looks set to boost the first-team chances of Sylvain Marveaux – the winger impressed in the recent 5-1 win over Hartlepool by bagging a brace – while Ryan Taylor’s versatility could be significant here; he has started in central midfield recently and could well fill in again.

Indeed, Taylor’s chances are increased by the news that Cheick Tiote is also a doubt after limping out of the Cardiff defeat with a calf problem. With skipper Fabricio Coloccini also battling to overcome a hamstring knock, Pardew is facing an anxious next few days as he prepares for the curtain to raise on the new campaign.

All this, of course, could be good news for Tottenham’s attacking assets in Gameweek 1. With the London outfit set to follow this trip with (WBA, NOR, rdg, QPR), plenty investment in Villas-Boas’ side is already expected. The idea of Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Rafael Van der Vaart lining up against an under-strength Magpies will strengthen Fantasy faith as we look to nail down our squads prior to Saturday morning’s deadline.

Our full team news service will be restored very soon, collecting all the very latest and offering predicted lineups as the days tick by towards the kick-off.

    1. Yaya has 3 goals this pre-season which is a lot for someone who apparently plays very deep

    2. Aguero has also scored 3 goals but all is forgotten when Tevez scores his first….

    3. Kolarov or Zabaleta? Both have played all preseason (except when B team was played v Limerick)

That is becasue Silva & Nasri had extra time off.

      Yaya Barry
      Silva Tevez Nasri
      Aguero

This is their strongest line up.

Aguero is also 2.5m more expensive though so it entirely depends on what you do with that extra 2.5m

      1. Yaya could be a good choice but it seems a bit strange taking up a City spot with a player who normally plays defensive mid. I admit he'll probably get the most game-time but there are far more explosive options available.

      2. You have to remember that £2.5m price difference really makes a difference to the rest of your team. True, Tevez isn't nailed on past GW2/3 but neither is Aguero once the CL comes around. I think Aguero will score more points per minute but he might not turn out to be better value.

      3. If I had to choose a City defender to start with, I'd go for Zabaleta. Zab won the RB position from Micah at the end of last term and is versatile (RB, LB, CB/RWB in a 3-5-2, DM sometimes). Kolarov is a great punt if both Richards and Clichy are definitely out of the picture but I don't think that applies here. Don't forget, Zab could even take Kolarov's position in a 4-4-2.

I'm tempted to start with Tevez and Zabaleta as my City coverage. It seems risky but I'll stick with that unless I hear some more info about Lescott.

Its amazing how many players that are picked for International duty get injured during these weeks. Doesn't seem to affect the players who aren't picked so bad. But even more amazing is how quickly they recover.

Podolski could be a very sneaky pick there, not on many RMT's

Will serve them right when Mancini plays Aguero and Balotelli against Southampton.

Then they will all dump him in GW2.

      Then I will buy him.

Then he will start playing and scoring.

And then the ... whole ... world ... will ... be mine ... all ... mine!

If it looked like Kagawa was going to play GW1 would you rather have him or take a punt on Cazorla/Walcott/Yaya/VDV/Siggy etc.? And who would you take the punt on? I fancy Arsenal to be good this season and I'm wondering if I should get Cazorla from the off and then switch Lampard to Kagawa GW2, while still having Torres for Chelsea cover...

Thinking similar, currently have Kagawa, but only because I don't have Rooney.

If I end up getting Rooney, I might get Cazorla in.

Richards is injured, Zab looks like he'll be assured gametime for a month. Also people are hoping he'll be in midfield rather than in a back 3/4 depending on formation

Yeah well I assume by signing Miyaichi that it is bacuase there is a very big chance Moses if off. Do you think he would be a decent option in that case?

but can't seeing him getting enough game time to warrant selection over the likes of Maloney, Noble, Kcankalic etc. Would love to see him get regular matches though 🙂

Kaca will get hardly any game time now that Rodallega is fit. Maloney is not certain to start either IMO.
