Injury Concerns for Pardew Ahead of Spurs Clash

While we’re always a little cynical when it comes to withdrawals prior to international friendlies, Alan Pardew clearly has plenty to ponder ahead of Newcastle’s Gameweek 1 opener against Spurs. Having watched his side lose 4-1 to Cardiff at the weekend, the Magpies boss is keen to rally his troops in time for Saturday evening’s home clash with Andre Villas-Boas’ side but this morning he revealed he has several first-team concerns on the horizon…

Up front, both Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse are struggling for fitness. The pair missed out against Cardiff, with Pardew handing Shola Ameobi the lone striker role in a 4-4-1-1, which saw Jonas Gutierrez play in “the hole” – a possible sign of things to come should the Senegal strikers fail to recover from their respective injuries.

Bearing in mind that Newcastle then travel to Greece to face Atromitos in the Europa League on Thursday August 25 before their Gameweek 2 visit to Chelsea only two days later, it’s fair to say that Pardew will likely be cautious with his team selection for fear of any long-term absence.

“Papiss has got a slight hamstring we think he will recover by Tuesday or Wednesday. Demba has a shin injury which he has carried for a week or so. So we took him out of the game on Tuesday.”

There are plenty of other concerns, aside from the two forwards. Pardew also conceded that Hatem Ben Arfa is all but out of the Spurs game due to a knee problem, while Yohan Cabaye’s lack of match fitness is a big worry. Ben Arfa’s absence looks set to boost the first-team chances of Sylvain Marveaux – the winger impressed in the recent 5-1 win over Hartlepool by bagging a brace – while Ryan Taylor’s versatility could be significant here; he has started in central midfield recently and could well fill in again.

Indeed, Taylor’s chances are increased by the news that Cheick Tiote is also a doubt after limping out of the Cardiff defeat with a calf problem. With skipper Fabricio Coloccini also battling to overcome a hamstring knock, Pardew is facing an anxious next few days as he prepares for the curtain to raise on the new campaign.

All this, of course, could be good news for Tottenham’s attacking assets in Gameweek 1. With the London outfit set to follow this trip with (WBA, NOR, rdg, QPR), plenty investment in Villas-Boas’ side is already expected. The idea of Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Rafael Van der Vaart lining up against an under-strength Magpies will strengthen Fantasy faith as we look to nail down our squads prior to Saturday morning’s deadline.

Our full team news service will be restored very soon, collecting all the very latest and offering predicted lineups as the days tick by towards the kick-off.

As Pardew has apparently promised Ba that he will play most games centre forward this season, how do we see the toon lining up?

4-3-3, or 4-2-3-1 (is there a difference??) seems the best fit with the players we have got (especially if we complete the anita signing), but that only leave one centre forward spot open, and that is Dave's.

Has anyone seen any direct quotes from pardew? I've seen plenty of articles writing about Pardew promising to pay Ba up front for most games, but no direct quotes. I reckon he might mean that there will be plenty of opportunities for Ba to play up front when dave is injured, rested, or when we switch formation to play 2 up top, but he will mostly on the left. What do yous reckon? These directly affects the possible outputs not just of Ba, but also Cabeye.

      Colo or Santon?

worried about Colo being injury prone and Santon being rested for Europa.

Both are as nailed on as they can be. They will only miss games when they are injured, rested. We don't have decent replacements for either. Colo is immense, and should pick up a few bonus, but I would go for santon (or saylor). Santon was really coming into his own at the end of least season and could go huge this year.

I read that to mean he will sit out some of the cup games. He is the glue that holds it all together, and so will only miss out when he is tired, or injured. Saying that, he was injured a fair bit last season. But then so was saylor!

Cheers. That was the quote I was looking for. But then how will we line up? The formation that plays the two guys up front, our 3 centre mids (including anita in that), and barfa, doesn't allow for any wide mids. It would rely a lot on our fullbacks providing the width (santon and hopefully debuchy). Is that a valid formation?

          ---------------------Krul------------------
          Debuchy*--Colo--Saylor--Santon
          --------------------Anita-------------------
          ---------------Tiote---Cabeye-----------
          --------------------Barfa-----------------
          ---------------Dave--Ba----------------

It seems very narrow to me. Are any successful teams using this formation? The fullbacks would be key, and it would make it absolutely vital that we get in a new attacking right back (debuchy please!!)

Regarding where he'll play, it's my assumption that Moses will leave for Chelsea now, the way I see it this is why Martinez got Ryo.

Ryo is two-footed so can play either left or right striker. Maloney can only play on the left as far as I'm aware. Moses was playing on the right. I think Ryo will be a simple swap for Moses.

    Siena Press Conference – 13th August 2012

[If you have no idea who Siena are (I didn’t have much of one) here’s the Wikipedia page (no, I didn’t have the cheek to do a Heco on it) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A.C._Siena

The search is over! AC Siena club president Massimo Mezzaroma has announced that the long awaited appointment has finally being confirmed. The new manager is Running Riot, an utterly unexpected and bizarre choice. Little is known about the new man, other than that he resides up north in Ireland, and that he has strong credentials in “FPL”. A shady character he may be, but not for much longer. Coming to you live, the unveiling of Siena’s new manager: Mr Running Riot!

    Interviewer: Hello, and welc-

RR – That’s Sir Riot of Running to you, you incompetent clown on the megaphone. I didn’t get this top hat and monocle for nothing, you know!

Interviewer – *visibly shaken* Yes, Mr….Sir Riot. Moving on, it’s a great honour to be managing this prestigious club. Can you sum up what this means to you, and why you think you’re the best man for the job?

RR – “Prestigious”? I wouldn’t go that far. They finished seventeenth last year, for crying out loud. And second in Serie B the year before. They’re the bloody Wigan of Italy.

    Crowd – What is Wigin?

Interviewer – Erm…yes. Continuing on, why do you think you’re the best man to lead Siena forward?
RR – You already asked that.

Interviewer – You didn’t answer. You just went on about Wigan.

RR – Oh yes. Well, two years ago in FPL I finished 17 thousandth. And barely 17k. It was practically 16k, I’ll have you know. And last year, even with a spate of injuries and incompetent assistant managers, I managed a very respectable 99k rank. Five figures, that’s all that matters in rank. Oh, and I was about 200th in the Euros! Would have been top 50 if I’d captained Alba but hey, you can’t win them all. Although I’m doing pretty well in that respect.

Interviewer – Indeed…fine qualifications, no doubt. And modesty galore. Here’s a question many viewers will be asking: What is FPL?

    RR – Next question.

    Interviewer – But -

RR – I’m qualified, alright! Next question.

Interviewer – What made you choose Siena, over the many great clubs no doubt vying for your signature?
RR – Well, China Mag stole my dreams by taking Newcastle *broods to himself for several seconds*. But I really just pointed my finger at the screen, closed my eyes and poked at any random name. The same method FPL used to do the baps by, for puzzled viewers. And the opportunity for puns is certainly present, so I’ll be taking advantage of that, definitely.

Interviewer – What have Messers Massimo and Valentina Mezzorama, the chairman and co-chairman, told you about the league and your competitors?

RR – They have the same name? Wonderful. As for the league, it looks extremely strong. When you have managers like Isacki, Forca, pratik, Mark, Littlewizard13, Milanista and god knows how many other ridiculously talented folk, it’s always going to be difficult. But I think the team has one advantage not many others have. Nobody expects us to do anything, or compete for the big prizes. So we’ll be using that to our advantage, and hopefully not get relegated! I understand it’s a bit of a habit here, so I know I won’t get sacked or anything, but I have my own pride to think about.

Interviewer – Just a tiny bit disrespectful, don’t you think?

RR – It’s been a long day, and this press conference isn’t far behind it.

Interviewer – All right then. Leaving the fourth wall shattered in pieces despite my best efforts, we’ll leave it there. Thanking Mr. Ri-

RR – *from down tunnel* SIRRRRRRR RIOT OF RUNNING YOU NITWIT!!

Interviewer – …-Sir Riot for his time, goodbye. Hopefully you all enjoyed Mr Riot’s *shouts heard in the distance* company as much as I did. That can’t be hard. This is Sersei Cosmi reporting for Italia News, and I’ve been speaking to the idiot they’ve hired to replace me. Thanks for joining us.

    *RR runs back out*

RR – I almost forgot. Siena next time!

    Crowd – Groan.

well we all have the same money

It is all about getting a different balance between MF and FWD

I still think that Bent is essential to everything villa will do whereas there are quite afew options in the midfield to assist and score. But graham is also a great cheap option upfront. Equally essential to everything swansea does. but he is not on pens and villa is probably a better side.

Originally had Valencia but I'm worried he might be used as a defender for a game or two - or three. Kagawa is yet to prove himself at this level but GW 2, 3 and 4 (FUL (H), SOU (A), WIG (H)) is pretty juicy. I'm leaning towards Kagawa.

SIlva might not start the season.

      Britton won't score many points.

Lambert plays for too crap a team.

Also if that Liv Kelly, then unlikely to play, if its Ful Kelly then Hughes is probably a better pick, less rotation risk.

    Dzeko, Suarez, Torres

    (B)

Cerny isn't a great pick, could easily decrease in value when people realise he's not going to be playing at the start
Walker is a gamble on Spurs defence, not sure how attacking AVB will be
I don't think Barnett is nailed on, you might wanna check on that one
Song only did so well last year as RVP finished so many of his passes, previously he's has very similar amount of chances created but awful returns
Young is a massive rotation risk
Dzeko will hardly play, awful pick imo

Sure, theoretically possible but personally I don't think so. It's crucial that they get off to a good start at home to SOU and Aguero is always favoured while Tevez is more likely than Balotelli. Mancini will probably start Aguero and Tevez and possibly swap Aguero for Balotelli if MCI is up and cruising.

    B) Tevez, Cazorla, Turner

I was settled on A) but considering I am using my WC quite early I figured I can cover 2 Chels, 1 Ars, 1 Utd and 1 City in attack and use Torres captain 1st week, Bale 2nd and then Tevez 3rd and then I can probably WC when I will have a better idea of who I want in my team. The only problem is if Aguero and Noble outscore Tevez and Cazorla the opening week I will be pissed.
