Moving Target

Moving Target – Dimitar Berbatov

While many of the more established clubs failed to appease their fans on transfer deadline day, Martin Jol handed Fulham’s supporters plenty to cheer about with the capture of Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United. The Bulgarian moves to Craven Cottage on a two-year deal reportedly worth £5m and reunites with Jol, having previously worked under the Dutchman at Tottenham:

Having been frozen out at United, the move gives Berbatov the chance to reignite his Premier League career after a difficult previous season harvested a mere five starts for the Old Trafford club. Knocking back a possible move to Serie A, with both Fiorentina and Juventus keen, the 31-year-old revealed his relief following completion of the transfer:

As soon as I was aware of Fulham’s interest my decision to join was an easy one to make. I’m impressed with the set up here and the people have made me feel welcome. There is a close and personal feel around the club and I can’t wait to get started.

The Statistics

Berbatov’s career began in his native country where, after scoring 77 goals in 92 games for the Pirin Blagoevgrad reserves as a youth, he was snapped up by CSKA Sofia. Making his debut as an 18-year-old, his step up to top level football was seamless, with 26 goals in 49 league games over two-and-a-half seasons at the club before Bayer Leverkusen came calling midway during the 2000-01 campaign.

Berbatov spent six years with the Bundesliga outfit and, while the first half of his tenure was relatively successful with 11 goals and nine assists from 54 appearances, the latter part was outstanding – his final 100 games in Germany harvested 57 goals and 24 assists before Tottenham came calling in May 2006. The Bulgarian’s time at White Hart Lane lasted just a couple of seasons, though; striking up a partnership with Robbie Keane, he flourished under Jol first time round with 27 goals and 15 assists in 69 league games and was snapped up by United on transfer deadline day in a sensational £30m swoop.

Of his four seasons at Old Trafford, only one – the 2010-11 campaign – can be classified as a real success from a personal perspective. With 20 goals that term, Berbatov was the joint-top scorer in the top-flight, with the particular Fantasy highlight being a five-goal haul against Steve Kean’s Blackburn in November 2010. Edged towards the periphery last term, with Danny Welbeck preferred as Wayne Rooney’s regular partner, Berbatov’s fate was finally sealed this summer after the arrival of Robin Van Persie from Arsenal. His record at United stands at 48 goals and 20 assists from 108 league appearances and, with seven goals in 12 games last term, it’s clear he’s far from a finished Fantasy force.

The Prospects

Judging by Fulham’s form under Jol last term, it could well be that Berbatov’s potential is mainly restricted to home games. While the Cottagers racked up 36 goals at home in 2011-12 – only three less than Spurs and Arsenal – they were dire on their travels, scoring 12 times away from home all season. It was a situation that, to a certain extent, made Clint Dempsey a frustrating purchase, though the US international more than made up for his away blanks with goals aplenty at home.

At present, it’s too early to judge what role Berbatov will be handed for his new club. His creativity could make him the ideal foil for Mladen Petric, with the Bulgarian positioned in “the hole” behind but, with Hugo Rodallega also coming into the equation, Jol’s intentions are still unclear. The former Wigan man was handed the full 90 minutes at West Ham last weekend, while Berbatov replaced Petric at the break; the latter, of course, has already produced in his only home game this season and is far and away the most popular of the three across the Fantasy games.

Penalty duties look up for grabs, with Berbatov perhaps first in line to prosper. Last season’s number one and two, Danny Murphy and Dempsey, have now moved on and the Bulgarian’s nonchalance from the spot would certainly boost his appeal. Reasonable prices of 6.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game are also likely to tempt further – particularly at home, Jol will be relying on Berbatov to bring a spark of real quality to his attack as the Cottagers readjust to life without Dempsey and Moussa Dembele.

With five goals in their opening home fixture compared to two in two matches on the road, the Cottagers seem to have quickly settled into a repeat pattern of last season. The chance for points looks good, then, ahead of home clashes against West Brom and Villa in the next six, while away trips to (wig, sot, rdg) are as kind a run as Jol could wish for. Certainly, with Berbatov on board, it’s a schedule that Fulham won’t be approaching with any lack of confidence.

He definately will be as long as he is on the pitch - but I'm worried that he might get less game time now that Benayoun has arrived.

Indeed. I think Diarra might get some of Noble's gametime though since Nolan is captain (and looking very good) and Diame has also played well.

They are different players, yes, but West Ham have a heap of defensive midfield options at the moment (Diarra, Diame, Tomkins as well as Noble) - presuambly Yossi has been brought in to provide a more attacking edge in which case someone is going to have to make way.

I've just had a hunt around the Interwebs as he was my transfer target this week, TW. "Thigh strain" is all I could find, although he did aplogise on twitter for his performance against WBA. May well be just an excuse to take him out of the SA squad for the pointless friendlies. Everton are even more tightlipped than the KGB so it's unlikely we'll hear anything. I'll probably do the transfer.

So I WC'd and now am trying to catch the price rises. My question is which is more likely to happen? Nolan to rise 0.2 or Dyer to rise another 0.1?

I am trying to catch all the 0.2-0.3 price rises so that i can sell some off for a profit. Because i don't just want a team full of knee jerks :).

I think RVP can be expected to hit about 280 pts by seasons end and Hazard probably about 200.

      Bale -> Nolan
      Torres -> RVP

      leaves you with:

      Cole Hangeland Cuellar
      Toure Kagawa Nolan Cabaye
      RVP Tevez Graham

which is hardly a bad team. You could even take a 4 point hit and downgrade Cabaye to Pienaar, McClean, etc.

Mertesacker could be replaced by the returning Koscielny next GW. McClean is expensive at £6.5m, IMO.

It's hard to say. Obviously Vermaelen is nailed on but he will cost you £7m, though he does weigh in with goals. But I'd prefer Koscielny (£5.4m) as he does too. He should replace Mertesacker who was fortunate to escape unscathed against Liverpool.

We have looked quite good defensively. In fact, I think along with Sunderland, Arsenal may prove to be the best value-for-money defensive-wise. All starters are at 5.5 aside from Vermaelen

True, but they will have to rise 0.2m for any benefit as a rise of 0.1m means you sacrifice the profit as the sell-on fee.

I may as well give it a go and hope that some of them rise 0.2, and even if they don't then I can just trade them to whoever I desire to be in my final team before deadline. It's not like I'm relying on any of them to rise by 0.2 in order to get another player so I may as well do it.

Just had a thought about how we always have a list of players we want to transfer out for out and what we tend to do about it. Most will simply play their Wild Cards or take multiple hits, however I'm not sure this is always necessary.

For instance I have about 7 or 8 players I want to transfer out or will need to transfer out at some point

DDG (Can give him another chance to see if he starts again)
Federici (Can be bench fodder for now, not urgent)
Zab (Should start the next game at least)
Jenkinson (Should start the next game at least)
Fabio (Can be bench fodder for now, not urgent)
Clyne (Can be bench fodder for now, not urgent)
Noble (Can be bench fodder for now, not urgent)
Graham (Deserves a chance against Villa)

Rest of the team: Hangeland, Hazard, Cazorla, Michu, Pienaar, RVP, Tevez

Although I have all these problem players I have a perfectly good starting team for the next game week. As a result I don't need to play my WC or take any hits. Its that simple, if you have a perfectly good team for the next GW, don't panic or make any kneejerk reactions (unless you don't have supposed essential players like RVP, Hazard or Tevez )

Yep that's another way of looking at it and is a slightly different point. Identify the essential players and disregard your defence or bench. Of course this only works in the short term. Eventually other players do need to be addressed.

They become transfer priorities. I had VDV and Lampard so they needed to be traded out for Hazard and Michu allowing funds for Torres to RVP. Prioritising transfers to make the most of big name players is the most important thing to consider I reckon.

I think Kag is virtually guaranteed to start next week - the anti-Kag backlash has gone over the top IMO after Southampton game where Welbeck drifted into his space forcing him deep right. Especially as he's at home to Wigan where United usually absolutely go for it, I expect fireworks from him and hopefully Fergie using two wingers which he likes a lot more. His last home game was against Fulham which was quite a handy score...

Looks like a good squad. Though isn't Simpson injured? Also, a lot of talk about Jenkinson be a temporary fill-in for Sagna. Who knows, with three clean sheets Wenger may keep him in a bit longer. I'm probably wouldn't have Kagawa if I had RVP, maybe look at swapping him with Cazorla. Petric could go for any number of budget strikers as the competition for places is pretty strong right now at Fulham. Just my two cents.

Too many Swansea in defence. Have a feeling theu going to struggle , despite a good start (against two poor teams)
        Sahin and kaca poor too
And also the one week wonder Petric needs to go

maybe i should of only given it 4/10

I still need to do that. I can't wait to see how the player size physics works. I'd always get so mad when Messi would just smash through Komapny lol. Win headers over Lescott. Unreal

Name 3 minor changes you'd like to see made to the fpl game- for me:

    1) If the assister of a penalty then takes and scores the penalty, he should get the assist and the goal.
    2) Some form of reward for (vc) picks. Perhaps 1.5x or something
    3) Points for a GK scoring should be way higher, like 50.

      1) Recovered balls system

      2) 1 point for the player who earns the penalty, 2 more if the taker scores.

      3) Substitution if a player gets injured within 10 minutes of playing.
