Moving Target

Moving Target – Dimitar Berbatov

While many of the more established clubs failed to appease their fans on transfer deadline day, Martin Jol handed Fulham’s supporters plenty to cheer about with the capture of Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United. The Bulgarian moves to Craven Cottage on a two-year deal reportedly worth £5m and reunites with Jol, having previously worked under the Dutchman at Tottenham:

Having been frozen out at United, the move gives Berbatov the chance to reignite his Premier League career after a difficult previous season harvested a mere five starts for the Old Trafford club. Knocking back a possible move to Serie A, with both Fiorentina and Juventus keen, the 31-year-old revealed his relief following completion of the transfer:

As soon as I was aware of Fulham’s interest my decision to join was an easy one to make. I’m impressed with the set up here and the people have made me feel welcome. There is a close and personal feel around the club and I can’t wait to get started.

The Statistics

Berbatov’s career began in his native country where, after scoring 77 goals in 92 games for the Pirin Blagoevgrad reserves as a youth, he was snapped up by CSKA Sofia. Making his debut as an 18-year-old, his step up to top level football was seamless, with 26 goals in 49 league games over two-and-a-half seasons at the club before Bayer Leverkusen came calling midway during the 2000-01 campaign.

Berbatov spent six years with the Bundesliga outfit and, while the first half of his tenure was relatively successful with 11 goals and nine assists from 54 appearances, the latter part was outstanding – his final 100 games in Germany harvested 57 goals and 24 assists before Tottenham came calling in May 2006. The Bulgarian’s time at White Hart Lane lasted just a couple of seasons, though; striking up a partnership with Robbie Keane, he flourished under Jol first time round with 27 goals and 15 assists in 69 league games and was snapped up by United on transfer deadline day in a sensational £30m swoop.

Of his four seasons at Old Trafford, only one – the 2010-11 campaign – can be classified as a real success from a personal perspective. With 20 goals that term, Berbatov was the joint-top scorer in the top-flight, with the particular Fantasy highlight being a five-goal haul against Steve Kean’s Blackburn in November 2010. Edged towards the periphery last term, with Danny Welbeck preferred as Wayne Rooney’s regular partner, Berbatov’s fate was finally sealed this summer after the arrival of Robin Van Persie from Arsenal. His record at United stands at 48 goals and 20 assists from 108 league appearances and, with seven goals in 12 games last term, it’s clear he’s far from a finished Fantasy force.

The Prospects

Judging by Fulham’s form under Jol last term, it could well be that Berbatov’s potential is mainly restricted to home games. While the Cottagers racked up 36 goals at home in 2011-12 – only three less than Spurs and Arsenal – they were dire on their travels, scoring 12 times away from home all season. It was a situation that, to a certain extent, made Clint Dempsey a frustrating purchase, though the US international more than made up for his away blanks with goals aplenty at home.

At present, it’s too early to judge what role Berbatov will be handed for his new club. His creativity could make him the ideal foil for Mladen Petric, with the Bulgarian positioned in “the hole” behind but, with Hugo Rodallega also coming into the equation, Jol’s intentions are still unclear. The former Wigan man was handed the full 90 minutes at West Ham last weekend, while Berbatov replaced Petric at the break; the latter, of course, has already produced in his only home game this season and is far and away the most popular of the three across the Fantasy games.

Penalty duties look up for grabs, with Berbatov perhaps first in line to prosper. Last season’s number one and two, Danny Murphy and Dempsey, have now moved on and the Bulgarian’s nonchalance from the spot would certainly boost his appeal. Reasonable prices of 6.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 7.5 in the Sky Sports game are also likely to tempt further – particularly at home, Jol will be relying on Berbatov to bring a spark of real quality to his attack as the Cottagers readjust to life without Dempsey and Moussa Dembele.

With five goals in their opening home fixture compared to two in two matches on the road, the Cottagers seem to have quickly settled into a repeat pattern of last season. The chance for points looks good, then, ahead of home clashes against West Brom and Villa in the next six, while away trips to (wig, sot, rdg) are as kind a run as Jol could wish for. Certainly, with Berbatov on board, it’s a schedule that Fulham won’t be approaching with any lack of confidence.

Admittedly this is a touch morbid, but casting your eyes over selected International fixtures below (to be played on Fri/Sat/Tues) are there any that stand out as must win, ultra competative fixtures where our premiership starts are likely to get a propper kicking.....and therefor a higher risk of injury?

Anyone think Dawson will be starting after the international break? He was a very solid CB before his last injury and with Kaboul out and the recent comments from AVB I gotta think Vertongen and Dawson are the 2 best options at CB. Dawson is club captain after all as well, is AVB just blowing smoke and doesn't rate Dawson and will go with Gallas or Caulker? He could be 4.7 with a slight goal threat, 4.7 for Tottenham defence seems solid.

Id keep ddg. Leave marveaux if u can until you WC, maybe shift fabio/boyce in a couple of weeks. Like to get in-form attackers with my transfers personally.

i might swap marveaux to guthrie if i have a free at some point

agreed, in form attackers will be my priority but if i dont have a transfer i need to make i'll swap out fabio or marveaux. because the thing is i'm hoping to save my wc as long as possible, hopefully use it sometime after the january wc if i can last that long

8 is much better than 12. I took a 4 point last week to get him in and it paid off. I suppose it depends on the rest of your team but I wouldn't want to be without him right now.

I agree, anything more than 8 a d you should probably go WC. though, in my early days doing FPL, I wasn't afraid of taking some big hits. But at that time your only got 1 WC per seaon.

i'd say 12pts is the max. i think you need to be making at least 5-6 transfers for a wc to be worth it. otherwise you might as well spread the transfers out over a couple weeks with a hit or two (or maybe 3 if something is that urgent)

Thats why I bought him for 13m. It doesn't take too many rises for him to become impossible to get for many managers making him somewhat of a differential and therefore even more valuable.

FFS made a fair point about how Andre Santos and Gibbs have not really been fit at the same time, so it is hard to tell. However, Santos was playing the wing in preseason which suggests Wenger maybe looking to him as a backup in that position which would mean Gibbs would be more likely, key word, to start.

the problem with 5 solid midfielders (i went that way last season) is it gives you a headache deciding who to bench each week and then you get frustrated with yourself when you bench someone who gets a 10pt haul for someone who gets you 2pts

Ahhh, nice job fitting Torres in there. I just brought Rafael in and regret it already as ManU seem to be pretty frail defensively. I've thought of Sterling as well and shifting to a 3-4-3. The defense looks a bit weak but then there have been so few clean sheets that it might work out ok.

I agree, mostly. No big hitter in mid but most of those guys have been pretty strng do far. Would have Captain a forward every week, which may be ok, given those three. But I like captaining a mid to take advantage of any clean-sheets and the extra point per goal.

Agree I prefer midfielder captain too. Just wanted to cover all big 4 and think I've done that well while still getting big Everton/Newcastle players in too. I had Bale/Guthrie rather than Ben Arfa/Nolan which I could change back to. Torres will bang them in all season I think so keeping him. My eye is on both Silva/Mata for later in the year with their price dropping. They'll both come good again.

I agree on Torres and have played around with trying to get him in. And I really agree with your long term approach. Build team value now to afford better players later. Especially so of the key players that are seeing a drop in form right now.

Yeah clean sheets are usually more reliable around mid season once the league/players settle down. Yeah thinking I might chance Rafael myself. Think Smalling will take RB once fit. Goalies and defenders rotate fairly well so intend playing 3 at the back most weeks.

Ramirez as a midfielder could be intresting, lets see how he settles, but could offer value

If you feel that way then perhaps you need United attacking cover?

Not for just one game. I posted yesterday that I have worked out that ALL transfers cost you a hit at some point. So that rules out any short term transfers for me.

To me, with his price this year he is no better than par value. He will have at least match his output from last season to be par value for money. Last season he was well underpriced, which was why he was essential. This season I would treat him as any other big hitter, and get him in and out of the team for good runs of fixtures. If I could have got him in last week without a hit, I would. Now there is only one good fixture, then a run of terrible fixtures. Not worth a hit.

Does that make sense? Or am I talking rubbish?

Having said that, Mrs China Mag got him in GW2, which makes going without him a lot easier to accept!!

Whats a fixture where you wouldnt consider it liekly for RVP to get decent points?

GW5-10. I would back him to score 1 or maybe 2 goals. But he is unlikely to run wild.

Agree they are tricky fixtures....but I cant see Utd goals coming from many other sources right now. And you'd back Utd to score more than 1-2 goals over 5 games surely. Only time will tell I guess.....

Methinks you're talking some trash 😉

RVP just proved he is fantasy gold, despite his pricetag. Can and will score against any opponent.

Be warned, go without RVP (at least when Rooney is out) at your own risk..

    RVP 13.4 and rising
    Tevez 9.8 and rising

Happy to have them both, but can't wait for Roon and Kun to come back and possibly some big hitter-forwards + middle price hitting form. It`s gona be more options, more different teams....more exciting....

With Miereles out and UCL starting it will be interesting to see how RDM will rotate his team as well. They have sooooo many attacking midfielders. Lamps at 9 might be a great prospect too...

....even better. Had him the first 2Games very happy. Would have been happier if Miereles was not there the 3rd EPL game(2nd week) to take his place...Lamps would have been the one scoring Hazard`s PK against NEW 😉

Who do we think will hit the 0.3 limit this week?

    My guesses are:

    RVP, Tevez, Michu, Hazard.

    Any others?

wouldn't mind that as i've got all of them 😀

how bout triple rises for ddg, fed, baines, cueller, boyce, hangeland, fabio, hba, pienaar, marveaux and graham too? 😉

in all honesty though ivan, demel, barfa, and nolan all have a shot at .3 rise i'd say

china mag, how's it going mate? haven't seen you around in a few days...

did you see guthrie dropped? :D. makes getting rid of marveaux a bit easier for us

i've drafted in barfa (bale + nasri > hazard + barfa for a 4pter), recon he'll do well?

      Barfa is a great option

Guthrie dropped, but Marveaux is on the verge of dropping again. I've got other more important transfers that I will need to be doing, so might have to find the extra 0.1m after all.

I'm probably going to be changing companies, which will mean a lot less time on here 🙁

great to hear! :D. that's what i figured but just wanted to hear you confirm it

yeah i know... i'm just hoping with low ownership he wont drop. same here. i've got an extra .2 now though so shouldn't be an issue but would prefer to have a strait swap obviously

darn :(. you excited about the move though? and my senior year workload plus applying to college is about to pick up so I probably won't be on here as much either (or at least will try not to be so i can get my work done)

I've been going no-where in my job for the last couple of years. I don't have a boss in China, and the bosses back home don't give much of a shit about me anymore, so i've had lots of time to come on here!!

The (potential) new job would be as operations manager for my friends ice cream company (Mr Softee). It could be a great opportunity so i would really want to knuckle down. I'll still get on here when I can though, but would probably restrict it to half an hour before work, and at lunch time.
